I think that "looking for things to want" is crucial to realize. It's the root of our raging consumerism, and was a great way to word it. I am trying ti get rid of that want, and have better and worse days. But I hope I am getting there. ^_^

my no-buy problem is, i always thought of shopping as the game of desire, our toying with our own desire to desire, flirting, teasing, danger, risk, thrill, blah blah blah so it's not the usual problems people have, it's more the closure of such a game of self-titillation/teasing, the start of dullness

My Dad taught me when I was a child that a gift is for something you want but which it is inappropriate for you to buy yourself ... something splurgy, extravagant, magical.
So for example: you don't get a pair of practical everyday wear earrings for Christmas ... you get the editorial crystal danglies that will make you feel horribly impractical but fabulous every time you wear them.

I relate so much to the "I want it but I don't 50 dollars want it" hahaha!
I think shopping malls and department stores are outdated and buying in those places is not enjoyable anymore. They are big buildings without natural lighting, with a layout designed to feel lost inside them, super noisy and messy.

Malls actually make me a little dizzy, but that is mainly due to my generalized anxiety disorder. I only go there if I have something specific in mind. That being said, I like interacting with people while shopping, and I like being able to see, to touch, and to try on what I intend to buy. I've lost track of how many times I have bought things through the mail and found them to be wanting. Then there is the hassle of returning those items if there is even a return policy at all! ~Anastacia in Cleveland

Jimena Baripatti | in my country (the Netherlands) there hardly are any malls. You really have to go to different streets and neighbourhoods, usually in the city centre. That can be annoying if you can’t find something in one area and have to go to another neighbourhood. But overall, it’s nice to wander around town.

Wow I love your story time Hannah. Watching you it's like watching myself. 😳 You see not only I am OBSESSED with makeup, I was a devoted fashion junkie/collector. I have several boxes of clothes that fits all occasions. I started a NO BUY on clothes/bags/shoes from the year 2016. And also I've done an inventory of every piece that I own (that includes from what brand/size/colour/style/fabric etc). In 2017, I started to sell/donate them out of my collection. What I learnt through my NO BUY on fashion items was that YES, I will be fine without the next trendy rip/square holes in the knees jeans (2016) or the off the shoulder with Spanish sleeves tops (2017) or the newest sports crop jacket (2018). I did my first clothing shopping trip last week after having 3 years without buying anything apparel. And I struggled with myself and it was also the first time I didn't get a 'high' from getting new trendy stuff. I just didn't want to be like how I used to be. And yes I spent AGES in one store (one and a half hrs!) going back and forth: do I replace the basic essentials or should I buy the trendy but also expensive jacket that's catching my eye every time I walk pass it?? Since that trip I decided to go on a NO BUY on clothing again (even though I ' ' 'only' bought total of 9 items 🙄😳).

Yay, I’ve been waiting for an update! What a unique gift from your parents, the gift of Rent the Runway. Your appreciation of editorial fashion will allow you to try some fun and unique pieces and make a memory with it! It is interesting how you first perceived the first shopping trip as an errand, and how you thought about other things you could be doing of more value. It was smart using the bulk of your gift card to Aritzia for one quality classic piece instead of quantity. The coat will be a piece to cherish and will give you pleasure when you look at it and wear it. I think it was a great first shopping experience all in all! You put back the items at Sephora and purchased the one thing that was needed. Your gift card to Sephora/JC Penney will be saved for another day when you are in the mindset to go back to the store and bring in something that will be valued. When you felt like you were faltering and had that wanting to stay shopping feeling along with nearing the wanting to want something feeling, the new you was in control and kicked in right when she was needed! Proof of your change of mindset!

I really want to thank you for all of your videos regarding your no buy. I have been binge watching them for the past few weeks and I’ve noticed a bit of a change in myself. Watching this video now, I figured out what it was. I don’t want to spend a dime anymore on things that don’t “spark joy” like you said. I read The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up about two months ago, and have been ruminating on it. I would much rather edit the things that I’m buying so that I’m truly only buying things that I am in love with - quality rather than quality. I also have been really listening to your videos about makeup you have that’s better than the makeup you want, and wow - I’ve been looking at the collection of makeup I have and wondering what I’ve been doing. I’ve found myself examining new releases I’m intrigued by and then looking at my collection to see if I already have it - and I do, every time. Thank you for your videos. You’ve got me thinking about so many important things in order to change my habits.

That coupled with having no formalized plan to purchase something has left me with at least one gift card that is YEARS old. 😳 All that to say I have been in your shoes many times.

Sometimes a gift card can, ironically, lead to overspending if the gift card doesn't cover the purchase price. You, Hannah, touched on this briefly when you talked about wanting that top: since your total purchases would be over the value of the gift card, the difference would be taken out of your budget. I completely hear you on the fight between the intelligent brain and the lizard brain! Last year was not quite a no-shop for me, but because I’d seen The True Cost the year before (and had been completely shocked/emotionally torn apart by it) I had been on a low-buy with an effort to only replace. This focused on cosmetics and clothes, but I forced myself to either go second-hand or ethical/green for the clothing (and living outside of Europe or North America severely limits the ability to do this).
I now find myself exhausted when I go shopping, equally un-thrilled by most products, and generally desperately trying to get out of shops (all the while, my lizard brain wants to see more and explore more). It’s a fascinating struggle and I’m looking forward to exploring it more this year.
Good luck to you! Seems like you’re going in a direction that will help a lot of people~

Time is one of the biggest reasons I’m cutting back on shopping in 2019. 7 days in and giving myself permission to not be on the lookout for sales/deals already feels very freeing. I just delete the sales emails without wasting time reading them. If I need one little thing from a store, I just order that one thing online versus wasting time and going in store where I would pick up an additional 20 things. It feels so good!

I relate so much to everything in this video - particularly that feeling of wanting to want something to get that dopamine rush, but realizing that nothing available will scratch that itch the way you want it to, and bumbling from store to store in a daze to find that one thing or that one great deal that will make you feel high. I’ve just embarked on a 6-month no-buy and it’s inspiring to see what the light at the end of the tunnel can look like. I can’t even tell you how much your channel has helped me!

This reminds me so much of when I lived in Strasbourg back in the day--French women will go for quality and flair every time. The young women I knew looked smashing wearing the same statement pieces over and over! It's not just a question of budget, which is of course true, but their armoires are much smaller, and they're filled with things they love wearing! Sending positive mojo for keeping yourself on course--enjoy! xo

Hannah I love your videos and your mind. I found it interesting when you were talking about how crazy you felt for deliberating over the items too long in the store. I feel exactly the same way, but it’s just interesting how stores make us feel that way, maybe because they want us to make snap decisions just to shop without thinking, to ensure they get a sale. Good for you for deliberating anyway and getting exactly what you wanted.

I resonate with what you were talking about with the quantity thing. For me it's easy to spend a big amount of money in small chunks, but I'd balk at buying a single item for the same amount. Technically I'd be spending the same yet my brain doesn't get it and is convinced I'm always saving the first way. One of the things I am learning to say no to is these small insidious purchases that all add up and learning that sometimes it ok to take that money and set it aside for something else. And that it can be more cost effective to buy that one expensive item you want than several smaller items , things you buy because it's cheap or to make do, that you don't really love and won't get the same use out of

I wanted to leave a follow up comment and I totally forgot. I think this whole experience is really interesting. I'm going on a makeup no buy/general low buy for 2019 and I honestly can't wait to have that apprehensive feeling about buying makeup in particular. I'm already pretty good about other stuff, especially clothes. I've been on a minimalist journey for the last two years and I've learned a lot and gotten much better about what I choose to bring into my space. Makeup is my weakness thought, hence the no buy. The last time I went to Sephora I bought two things I didn't need, one of which I'd had no intention of ever buying because I just don't need it. It was such a frustrating experience.
Your channel has been a real inspiration for me over the last few weeks and I'm interested and excited to see how your journey and relationship with shopping continues to progress. I'm also excited to see my own patterns change and I hope my no buy is also successful. Thank you for sharing

Going shopping might have made you sick. I have an auto immune problem and stress plus overload equals reduced immunity to germs or my body attacking itself. Even good stress is stress. Overwhelmed at the mall is a thing! It’s overload.
I do a lot of pre shopping on line in peace and quiet.
Then at the mall I do a no buy trip. If it’s a reconnaissance mission that’s ok.
When I do see something that I think I want I do 1 of 2 things. I go home and sleep on it. Usually I don’t go back.
If it’s the last one or I’m dealing with the fear of losing it before getting back then I buy but only if I can do a comfortable return. If not I default to no.
Waiting another month for one single thing that rings your bells is best.
That coat was perfect. Yes you need basics but you did get a great pair of pants that will do you fine. Both realistic value.
The T-shirt was not necessary. Your limit brought it into focus.
Your Sephora expedition was the same. You got the thing you really needed like the pants. The budget brought it into focus.
You climbed mountains in that mall working through your heart & mind. That’s a tremendous effort & it’s like your shopping lizard is vanquished!!!
Love that illustration!!! Lol 😂 “reptilian death march through the mall.” I saw you dragging the dying reptile of your former spending habits right back out to daylight & death.
No wonder you felt exhausted and sick! St George after the dragon!!!
I’m so glad I found you last week!!!!

You have some good strategies in place! Also, you are right that "good stress is stress". In psychology, it is called "eustress" from the Greek word " eu" meaning "good". When I was young (after high school), I would be so excited about going to a party that my guts acted up. A week before my first wedding I had a bad, painful sinus infection. It happens, and it is not necessarily "woo"! ~Anastacia in Cleveland

I have a lot I wanna say to you but currently have no words to express how I feel. All I can say is I am so glad I found you, finally someone is putting into words a lot of the feelings I have had for years regarding shopping and products, I relate to you so much because when I was younger I had bad shopping behaviors, which I then tried to correct by being more careful and making more thoughtful purchases and not rushing into it. My mother and cousins used to tease me so much for being a slow shopper and “having no taste”, and saying “oh my god are you seriously leaving the mall and haven’t bought a thing. I feel good now that I stayed strong and am still a relatively careful shopper.
I am even more happy that you create this content Hannah, you put my feelings into words, I love you for it.

I find that often times i really dont want it later or i want something else more

  • @kphudson

Loving your series! I immediately started on a budget in a spreadsheet while watching your last video outlining your beauty budget year. It’s something I have been meaning to do, but for me, this is the year of control. Control over spending, my messy home, my health (logging meals, cooking more at home, more workouts). I don’t have a set budget for certain expenses, but I’m on a low/no/replacement-only buy for most things as I pay off a credit card and actually track what I spend.
I’m glad you got the coat - it’s stunning! - but I hope you don’t resist things you do need because the money isn’t quite as much fun to spend (I might be projecting bc I see myself in this! Absolutely not said in criticism, just thinking). The gift card was almost as much as your monthly budget. But, the coat is a special statement piece like the sweater dress and I definitely appreciate not buying things just because of the quantity! And, you still got pants you needed. I have a hard time spending money on things like leggings or pants for work, or home items I might need. I just purchased a gorgeous pair of oxfords on sale on the 1st as my ballet flats for work are pretty much done for, and my loafers are a little sad too. Could I have spent that on 2-3 pairs of low quality pants and added variety to my work wardrobe instead? Sure, but I don’t mind my minimal wardrobe and don’t want to spend on clothing while I’m on a weight loss journey. Now that’s another set of issues aside from budget! I’m glad you are talking about this and appreciate the way you are talking about it. A lot of budgeting (and decluttering/KonMari) stuff out there feels so judgemental.

I love your videos, I find them really fascinating honestly because I’m the total opposite. I get huge huge amounts of guilt when I spend money on myself or buy things and constantly cycle through the items I already have. Whenever I buy something I feel instant regret.. so I’ve had to work hard on allowing myself to treats or replacements! My boyfriend on the other hand loves shopping, so we’re slowly levelling each other out.. and he likes choosing clothes for me, and I have a lot less guilt these days! - I still spend ages thinking ‘it would cost me X hours of working to pay for this’ though! (This seems similar to your t-shirt budget dilemma!)
I hope you find your new budget balance and find more joy in it and not sickness!! - I love how you say you want your heart to love the beautiful things you want! I love your style, can’t wait for more 2019 videos.

I think returning the dress is kind of like buying a gift...it should be something that is special that you might not pick out any other day. Obviously if a person is very practical, I'd rather get them something that they'll use, but otherwise it should feel a little indulgent or be something you might now buy otherwise. I'm glad you finally went for it and got that gorgeous coat! I'm not doing a no-buy year but because of videos of yours, and like yours, I'm more aware of how I'm spending money. A lot more of the "is it worth it?" brain is going on. Again, not even a week in but it's definitely there.

I am so excited for this year, a budget is exactly what I need! Interestingly I have stopped "looking for things to want" or even going to stores when it comes to home decor and clothes since I no longer window shop the way I used to, but for some reason I am scared of doing a no-buy year. I fear something amazing being around the corner, especially since I watch youtube makeup videos for fun and am itching to buy a green eyeshadow palette. Even though I feel so happy with using my makeup and curating my collection, I might limit myself with strict rules this year to really have these same conversations about what a "need" really is. Thank you so so so much for what you do, I feel like my mindset evolves every time I watch one of your videos!!!

had to pause to say: i think you are right about your sickness and shopping being related. just last night i was reading a book called "the big leap: conquer your fear and take your life to the next level" in which the author talks about how when we feel like we have reached the peak of what we deserve (in success, love, etc.), we self-sabotage in different ways, including getting sick. so, i'm going to guess that you felt like you didn't "deserve" to be shopping, and so your body wanted to help you stop. makes sense to me! ;-)
