    Your new project sounds so super interesting and I’m excited to see how it develops.
    I’ve started my no buy year. I feel positive I can do it. My reasons are different to what yours were and I’m doing it because I use shopping as a fix-it to my emotional turmoil. I want to do the no buy year to save money for my house, but more so for me to find constructive solutions to regulating my mental health.
    Congrats on all your success through 2018 and long may it continue!

      You can do this...I am doing it for similar reasons. I am encouraging myself that if I do the no buy, every quarter I am going to reward myself with something simple such as a massage or facial. I am excited to see what I can save up for without buying. The scary thing is I woke up to so many sale ads in my inbox, even some I thought I unsubscribed from.

      Rachael, I am doing a no buy year too. For similar reasons as you, except instead of saving money I am trying to pay off my final student loan this year. I really feel like I am going to be able to get that one finished up. Best of luck!

      i'm doing the same, but will continue a low buy period in which I will control my spendings as much as possible and avoid impulse shopping. I've started this a couple of months ago and buying just on an "absolutely needed" basis has paid off so far. i already have so many things, but the problem was I am not aware of all of them because they are spread across 3 countries I've been living in and I always feel I do not have what I need when I need it most. still, no reason to buy stuff 3x and build 3 households. lol.

    It's awesome that you're doing a beauty budget. Budgeting is one of those things I feel everyone should do no matter what your income or situation. Working in banking, I see people often spending way beyond their means to keep up with a lifestyle they can't afford and it can become a very sad situation. I think one of the problem is, most people in society don't seem to talk about their finances and it seems like a bit of a stigma talking about money but it shouldn't be!

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  5 років тому +3

      Thanks, Melissa! I've always had an aversion to tracking my finances, it made me anxious because I felt guilty about my habits. Now I'm totally ready to take it on, I'm excited for the new project! It's such a relief.

    I am very excited that you're going to be continuing your channel passed your no-buy year. I feel like you are at the center of a revolution on youtube and everyone now wants to revamp their spending habits. Have you watched no-buy announcement videos and do you have general concerns for what you've seen? Were there any scenarios in your no-buy year that were not covered by your rules and you had to adapt?
    This may be too nosy of me, but are you planning on using a credit card for your purchases? I ask, because I put everything on my credit card, but then pay it off before it can accrue interest. Essentially, I use it as a debit card. I'm wondering if you have a rule to pay off any credit card purchase you make or if you're not using it at all?
    Finally, thank you for sharing your no-buy year and now your new brain child with us. I feel like watching your content has slowly coaxed me out of a depression slump. I have been excited by your ideas, inspired by your character, and entranced by your vocabulary and speech. I want to be better and more thoughtful; I feel like you've given me something to focus on to get started. Thank you.

      I'm excited for everyone who is trying a no-buy! As far as I've seen, people are starting with really clear rules, which bodes well. I'm planning to just use my debit card, but a credit card that gets paid off in full every month is a great thing to have for your credit.

    In terms of brands that test on animals, check out logical harmony. She has lists of who does and doesn’t test, as well as which brands at Sephora etc test.

    I appreciate that you touched on a company's ethics outside of animal testing. So much emphasis is placed only on animal testing we forget to consider if they are treating employees well, creating recyclable packaging to reduce waste, and more. I went cruelty free about a year ago and since then have really asked myself some of the same questions: no they don't test on animals, but does that make them ethical to others or the environment? Great points, I'm excited to see how this year goes for you!

    Hannah! As a budgeting nerd, this challenge is fantastic!
    I just finished analyzing my 2018 budget (vs. actual), and it helped me tweak my 2019 proposed budget. Last year, I overspent in my dining out and entertainment category, but I underspend in my groceries and home goods category.
    This year, I want to dine out less, but indulge in entertainment (concerts, dance performances, plays, etc.) more. I broke that one category into two so that I can mindfully track my dining spend vs. my entertainment spend.
    Yeah... I am a budgeting nerd!! I was not until a few years ago when a female friend showed me the value and the power of understanding and controlling my finances. Good for you!
    I also like the fact that your definition of beauty includes those items that are beautiful and bring you pleasure.
    Happy New Year!

    Clear, well-defined rules are essential for success, in my opinion. A lot of us need that structure, and recognizing that and being able to enforce them is so important. I love how self-aware, mature, and methodical you are, Hannah. And of course you already know this, but your project over the last year and moving forward is so much more than just getting control of a shopping problem. It's about taking control of your life and ensuring a more secure future for yourself. What a beautiful, valuable, empowering message. I'm so excited for this anti mindless consumerism and more socially responsible attitude that has taken hold in the millennial community!

    A great start to the New Year I must say! I love the added element of tracking the ethical and environmental cost of your purchases as well. This is going to be a project that I watch very closely as I am challenged in both of these areas (budgeting and considering all the costs of purchases). I am feeling the urge to go create a spreadsheet now! Happy New Year Hannah! And as always, thank you for sharing with such grace and transparency. 🥰

    Can't wait for the upcoming year. I love the idea of exploring ethical consumerism because this is something I'm very interested in. I decided to go cruelty free last year but no longer make this a central part of my purchasing because I soon realised cruelty free refers only to animal testing and doesn't take into account the human cost. I look forward to this year's journey and hope I learn things along the way with you.

    • @CamilleonProductions
      @CamilleonProductions 5 років тому +2

      Good on you! While I agree that cruelty free is a good cause, it's not enough. I always encourage people to learn more about the corporate social responsibility (CSR) model, because it gets you thinking about all the impacts of what you buy - slave labour, pollution, the social efforts of the business (eg giving to charity). As horrible as it is, it's more important to me that humans live over animals.

    • @ala4935
      @ala4935 5 років тому +3

      Claire Brookes the idea that a cause isn’t good enough and stopping it for that reason is so counterproductive to bettering the world. i’d encourage you to reconsider. respecting animals lives doesn’t mean you can’t respect humans at the same time.

    • @CamilleonProductions
      @CamilleonProductions 5 років тому +2

      @@ala4935 While I see your point, I think what she means is that she's not going to buy something purely on it being cruelty free - especially if the makeup was made by overworked and underpaid Chinese factory workers. Her new cause is looking at the ethical implications as a whole and not just buying something because it has a peta bunny. Vegan and cruelty free products can still be non-biodegradeable and kill fish in rivers, and can still be made by people who are essentially slaves.

      Both human lives and animal lives are equally important. We as humans have the ability to make choices about pretty much everything in our lives, animals do not, they are at the mercy of our choices and actions. So I think protecting them is equally as important as protecting the human lives that are exploited by big corporations.

    “Buy it just to try it.” These words got me. I’m only a few weeks into a low-buy (and it’s going very well!) but I am becoming painfully aware of how much of my shopping behavior revolves around this concept of “trying” something. I love trying new makeup, but that leads me to ignore things I have and love. I landed on this solution, one that brings me such joy: I kept one subscription box that does not count as part of my low-buy. That satisfies my “buy it to try it” need. But that means that any other products I buy need to be more well-considered: what does it add to my collection? What do I have that I will ignore if I buy this? (That is my favorite question that really curbs spending.) I’ve already realized in a few short weeks how often I buy impulsively under the guise of trying something out, and how often I justified that purchase because I typically did enjoy it. But I already had products of that type that I also enjoyed. This new one did not add anything and in fact kept me from enjoying others. So I just keep a list of each of those would-be impulsive buys and revisit it at the end of the month to see what I likely would have bought and if I still want it. So far, not one thing has made the cut. That’s really eye-opening. Thank you again for all of the inspiration for this project. My life and space already feel clearer.
    Edited to add: I do hold myself to a monthly spending budget, and while the subscription box does not count in terms of the items I am allowed to purchase on my low buy, it still does factor into my monthly budget.

    This project sounds so good!
    One tool I think you might find helpful (in case you haven't heard of it yet) is You Need a Budget (YNAB). It's a program that forces you to look at what money you currently have and allocate it into different categories before you spend - like an envelope system. It also lets you roll over unspent money into future months, like what you're planning with your beauty budget. I've been using it for 2 years and it gives me so much satisfaction to really get a handle on spending and saving for the future.

    I’ve been lurking on your channel for a month and I’m so glad I found you! I’ve been struggling with a makeup buying addiction for about 2 years now and this has been giving me so many ideas! It also helped to decide that a no buy year is exactly what I need for 2019. This monthly budget is a great idea, too.

  • @QueenLiAnn
    @QueenLiAnn 5 років тому +3

    This is an awesome project! Budgeting such a valuable skill to have and the beauty industry never talks about this. I have been budgeting for a year now, with all of my expenses, so I have a certain amount of money I can spend every month. I also have a beauty budget, except I do not include homewares in my beauty budget. For me it is makup and clothes. Because a few years ago I had limited amount of spending money in some ways I am already very good at not overspending. ...
    I heard a business podcast once where the speaker talked about opportunity cost and that really helped me to learn how to resist impulse buys. Opportunity cost is when you spend in one thing and that prevents you from future opportunities that might have been more beneficial. It is good to keep this term in mind when going on a budget.
    I'm so excited for you Hannah and thank you for sharing your journey with us! That's awesome and inspiring!

  • @Charlotte-ti2yk

    Well this is exciting. Such a good idea, and one that probably fits my lifestyle too. I’m doing a ‘low-buy’ this year, and the rules involve number of items rather than value (it’s probably similar to Angelica Nyqvist’s rules, with changes here and there), but it’s similarly constraining for the kind of life that I live. My ‘problem’ is that I can afford to buy the things that I want, whenever I want them. I have a decent income, and no one but myself and my dog to look after. But I’ve recently realised that just because I can afford something doesn’t necessarily mean that I should buy it. There are much better things I could be doing with my money, including not wasting it by buying things I don’t get to use because I’ve already moved into the next thing.
    I’m very interested in the ethical part of this too... I only buy Cruelty Free products already, but embarrassingly I’ve never considered the other aspects you mentioned. Perhaps apart from the environmental aspect - that’s one of the reasons I’m doing my own challenge.
    I’m looking forward to this series, and potentially using your experiences to improve my own ‘rules’!

    This is amazing! I agree that this is hard core in a new way! I saw the documentary (the name escapes me at the moment) on Netflix about fast fashion and it was horrifying, like deeply, deeply horrifying. I also think that 200 dollars a month is challenging, and it will be really interesting because as you’ve noted there will be lots of practical purchases you will have to make from that budget. Oven mitts and new towels to replace the tattered old scratchy ones aren’t going to feel like you are spending money on beauty, so I am really impressed and totally fascinated by this! I have tried in the past to budget and I never ever could 😔 so I’m starting the first year of my no buy today, and it’s because of you. If you can do it, so can I because we are basically the same 💗💗💗💗

    I'm loving the idea of your new project. I don't know if you felt this at all, but I had a little pang as I rolled my no-buy over into the new year. I didn't really WANT to go on a major spree, but I have to say...I did not have the same sense of excitement and inspiration that I felt as I started last spring. I feel more like I've settled into the long-haul slog of what disciplined spending really is. That's not to say that there aren't positive feelings as well. I grow more and more confident with each wise decision I've been able to make. The dwindling number of products in my skincare collection is actually a source of pride to me. I've learned so much about what I do when it comes down to picking one thing in a category that I truly love. Saving money is turning out to bring me the minimalism that my soul seems to truly crave.
    I look forward to the coming year of videos. I especially want to hear and learn about ways to combat fast fashion, ways to vet clothing brands, etc. My strategy so far has been that I almost never buy anything new...probably 90% of my closet comes from pre-owned consignment shops. That's partly because of cost, and partly because I didn't feel that I had the time or energy to dedicate to vetting companies before every single shopping trip.

    i was expecting something like this, the beauty budget part, but i wasnt expecting the inclusion of ethical consumerism etc. such a great idea! the no buy year project was pretty clear cut but this is like an onion project, so many layers of goodness! i can't wait to see how this unfolds and learn what you learn.
    i was actually contemplating if i should do a no buy (still have not bought anything this year) but couldn't commit yet due to many reasons, one of which is because it was just too rushed to go through with a january to december 2019 no buy as i only found your channel about a week ago. i thought maybe i could start after i've figured out my game plan (rules, etc) but now i feel like i could instead do this budget with you as i still needed to get some stuff and i don't have too much to start with anyway. like you said, this project is more real-life.

    This is such a cool idea Hannah! I have just started my no buy year, and I've taken a lot of influences from your's last year! I definitely think that after I've completed this year, I will do something similar with beauty budgeting. I'm currently in the process of working out roughly how much I used to spend on makeup/beauty per month, and putting that money into my savings instead (minus replacement item purchases). I look forward to re-watching all of your no-buy series throughout my year, and seeing how your beauty budget is going as well!

    Happy New Year! We all are going to have to get used to a new video opening! I think your beauty budget plan and learning about ethical consumerism and where your money is going is a wonderful next step progression! I’m looking forward to your updates! My makeup no buy started at 12:00 am. My rules are in place. I have lots of nice things to use throughout the year and I am looking forward to seeing where it takes me. I am planning activities for myself to keep it fun!

    Green, sustainable shopping is how I started watching UA-cam beauty 5 years ago. I want to get back to having all green beauty. It’s my no buy year so I can really do anything since I will not be buying products I already own. Antonym blush has been on my Sephora list forever Incase you’re in the market.

    Hi Hannah, I love your videos! I just started watching at the end of your no-buy and binged pretty much your whole channel. Ethical consumerism is such a good idea. Would you consider continuing monthly favorites or "shop my stash" with your clothing, or doing some test capsule wardrobes? You have such a great sense of style!

    This sounds completely excellent and appropriate after your no-buy journey. I'm so pleased that you're treating 'beauty' as a broader category outside of just makeup. Like you, I am a sucker for beautiful things, art, smells, ambiance, etc, and overspend on all of those areas, so I'm excited to see where you go with this and what you learn. Good luck!

    I’m excited to see this project unfold! My no buy/low buy year started today. I have planned purchases because I live far away from a city and I can’t buy everything online. The purpose of my no buy year is to make new spending habits. But mostly to break the shame/weird ness of me purchasing and talking about it with my husband. He’s very reasonable and generous. I have no reason to feel this way. So I believe it will make our relationship stronger in the long run. I also want to get back to other hobbies I love.

I'm trying my hand at a project pan this year and am attempting my first low-buy (so I'm intrigued by your no-buy playlist, too...). One way I categorize is "spending required" and "spending not required" so required covers the occasional needs like oil change, new wipers, a bill being higher than the usual budget. The NR is the generic spending on makeup, clothes, house decor. Whatever not spent goes into savings unless saving for a big budget item.

    #NotificationSquad. I was hopelessly trapped in a wonderful book (Shogun if you’re wondering). I missed getting lost in words and I’m so glad I got back in reading in 2018. Thanks to you Hannah! The notification snapped me back to reality... guess I’m watching this and going to bed :D
    I love this concept! I also have a beauty budget AND A limit of items (19) that I can buy in all of 2019. I am about to spend a large amount of money to begin a new business venture and this year will be tight! Until you put it into words I didn’t realize it, but I am also a career creative. It’s a lifestyle choice for me to tighten things up so I can do the work I love. I’m fortunate to be able to do it.
    The second part of my project will be about simplicity. I realized the most beautiful and wonderful parts of my life are the most simple so I’m on a mission to simplify my life as much as possible.
    I do have one quick question about beauty services. Are they part of your beauty budget? Or are they considered an experience?
    Oh my gosh and plants?!? Are plants part of the beauty budget?
    It’ll be a fun adventure to see how 2019 “low buy” works in my life as well as your own.

    Loveee this! I'm doing no-buy 2019 and have also created a spreadsheet to track the things that I look at and would have usually impulse bought, how much they cost and then a do I regret not buying it section so that I can keep track of how much money I've saved from that. Then when I do go back to buying make up/clothes or when people ask me what I want as gifts for my birthday/christmas then I can use those that I actually regretted not being able to buy. I think it'll be good to track where most of my impulse purchases would usually come from and how many I actually don't regret not buying. I think it's so easy to convince yourself that you NEED the 20 things from the haul you just watched but in reality you won't actually care in a month that you didn't end up buying them most of the time. Definitely recommend!! x

  • @wendyraye

    You have seriously helped me understand what I need to do- I’ve never had a budget (sounds terrible) for anything - that doesn’t mean I buy everything I WANT (believe me, I would have everything Charlotte Tilbury - I have an eyeliner), but I didn’t have any sense of where my money went and I felt out of control, and I need some structure to be happy.
    I’ve read and watched things about budgeting for YEARS but nothing made me feel compelled to follow through, ever. Something about your experiences have opened my eyes to see beyond myself and consumerism in general (if that makes sense). I can’t thank you enough for being up front and completely honest about what you will and won’t compromise on.
    Not only are you beautiful, you’re very graceful and well spoken (my goals):)

    What a great idea for a follow up to your no buy year. I'm excited to see your progress through 2019! I discovered you only a couple weeks ago, but you've inspired me to do a no buy 2019! Oh and I will start following my expenses too this year, I keep an excel file of all my spending and then divide them into categories (food, cosmetics, clotes, homewares, study supplies, hobbies etc.). I did this for a few months last year too, and it really helps me see where I can save and where my money really goes. It can be a bit surprising, like for you when you counted how much each skincare item costs per YEAR for you.
      I find that the easiest way to do this is to get a receipt from every purchase I make. Online purchases I can see easily on my bank webpage.
      Banks offer apps to follow the categories in spending too, but I feel I need to create those categories myself. I buy makeup from grocery stores so I need to differentiate that from food etc.
      If you find or create some useful tools (excel sheets) for following spending can you share them with us?

  • @emmybailey2672

    First, I love the idea of an umbrella beauty budget. Second, I'm excited about the ethical consumerism side of this. I buy mostly cruelty free but there's so much more to being an ethical consumer than just animal testing. I'm sure growing in awareness of to whom your money goes is a huge part of the battle.

    Such a great project for your year after! I imagine that it would be so easy for the pendulum to end up swinging the opposite direction after such a strict no-buy year and this project will stop that from happening. I need to budget so bad. I just want to say that you are absolutely amazing. You are incredibly articulate (and you do have a very relaxing voice by the way haha) as well as very intelligent. Plus, your honesty regarding how you entered 2018 (with credit card debt), as well as all the struggles you went through, and then the end of the year with all the analysis of all the things that you likely would've bought (and possibly more) - the whole project have just been a really amazing for me to watch. i only started watching in December actually, but wow. Your videos are also really long but I personally have zero problem with that, as again you are very articulate and intelligent, and it's honestly such a breath of fresh air to experience almost a "normal working adult woman" on youtube. It's not to say I don't have plenty of other beauty gurus I love to watch, but in those cases I think they're almost as much as sales people as regular woman. with you, it's a lot like listening/talking to a real friend who have to go through the same struggles of saving money, trying to stop your spending habits, trying to use what you already own rather than constantly buying more and more. Lady, you don't know how much respect i have for you. Also really enjoy the videos where you really use the stuff you own and find other ways to use them - it's really satisfying to see someone truly and FULLY enjoying what they own. The new project sounds interesting as well, and i look forward to another year of your well thought out and well articulated analysis! (have i mentioned how articulate you are? :) I also wish you a more and more successful career, both in your small business, on youtube, and especially your writing!

I can spend $50 a month on beauty stuff, and $50 on clothes and other items that aren't essential in my life.
