Chris Stuckmann reviews Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, starring Owen Teague, Freya Allan, Kevin Durand, Peter Macon, William H. Macy. Directed by Wes Ball.
For a franchise whose last few movies have been close to masterpieces, Planet of the Apes still feels incredibly underrated. Hopefully Kingdom does well at the box office.
Well, the third movie of the trilogy was just so depressing in many ways, the story was depressing, the main plot that fooled the audiences with the fake title with the "War" word at the title and posters with many apes in trenches, but actually being about a war between a small human group vs another human group where most of the time the apes are just in the middle of this fight in a concentration camp. And the way everything ends with a deus ex machina avalanche that suddenly kills all human soldiers... jesus.. that was depressing to watch. And I really liked the first movie and loved the second.
their a rare breed of movies being that planet of the apes is originally from the 60s and they were able to revive it in 2011 and they have completely outdid the original
It has major importance in the original films as well. I loved that Rise (all of the modern Apes movies, really) worked in a reference in such a way that it stood on its own but was also a special callback to those who are familiar with the old films.

Just watched the movie here in the Philippines, it's now showing nationwide. I can say the story still has a rich storytelling, the character development is well-executed. The visuals were fantastic, the post-apocalyptic shots of rotten buildings and also the apes' CGI. The trilogy still keeps going. 👌 7.5/10 Well in my opinion, Dawn of the Planet was still my best, nothing could replace the role of Caesar, he brings the movies together. In Kingdom, I was also able to see revelations and some interesting topics about humans and apes, so this sparked my interest to watch again the previous installments, and I'm looking forward for Kingdom II (hopefully)
I saw it last night. It was ok, thats it. The whole Eagle ritual story was unnecessary. The best caracther Raka was killed too soon. But the ending was good I guess I mean they made contact with Fort Wayne, Indiana we heard a voice but didnt show us if it was human or ape.
I was very uncertain about this movie, but you sold me on the last few and it became my favorite film trilogy behind Lord of the Rings. I’ll have to check it out!
I enjoyed it. We got to go see it today for our 8th anniversary. It's our first post-baby movie. I saw the first 3 back to back during the opening day, and my spouse joined me for the last 2. Now, it's difficult to watch anything without pauses. I was getting ready to see this in theaters alone because that's how being a parent is, and getting to see it together made it that more special. Becoming a parent has made me look at humanity in a different way, and I feel like KINGDOM came out at just the right time for me. Rewatching the first 2 post pandemic gave them an even more realistic feel, and the 3rd examining long-term affects of the virus just hits even harder.
:) My most anticipated movie of the year, and it's another winner for this franchise. Thank you for this, Chris. Your review for War for the Planet of the Apes had me even more excited to see that back in the day, and that ended up as my favorite film of the last decade. I trust your opinion now as I did then. Can't wait to see the film this weekend, Chris.
The original is great (though it's sequels each have diminishing value), the Tim Burton remake is a strange egg and the modern reboot (Caeser Trilogy) honestly deserves to be spoken about in the same conversation as the LotR Trilogy, OG Star Wars and Godfather Trilogy, it really is that good.
Chris doesn’t say negative things about movies anymore on purpose because he wants to be a filmmaker himself so he thinks he has a better chance of directing a big movie or something. Never trust the modern Chris Stuckmann for a movie opinion
I really liked how Noa was written and portrayed. He was vulnerable and conflicted but also responsible, intuitive, and good-natured. I also liked that they had us follow an ape on the verge of adulthood because it positioned him differently than Ceasar was in the second and thid films
@@BrayOfTheDonkey Jeremy will say it's dogshit if it is or will score it in any form. Chris won't, he would just tiptoe walk around a movie if it's bad, so they would only do it for "good" movies
I honestly think this is head and shoulders above the Matt Reeves trilogy. And I liked those movies. This feels like a genuine masterpiece that balances a really solid story with some of the best set design and visual effects. Also, this is the best acting from any Apes movie ever. You had atleast 3 different actors hit Andy Serkis level here.
I'm a big fan of the 2010's Apes films and especially the Matt Reeves films so the absence of both him and Serkis was a concern. A fourth film was inevitable given there financial success but moving the story on a few generations is a smart move [especially as 'War' ended that trilogy perfectly]. I'm a massive fan of the Apes movies in general and glad to see a series that started in the 60's still going.
Saw it tonight. The first 15 minutes or so, where they introduced the new clan gave me the bad feeling that it was going to be something like Avatar Way of the Water. But as soon as Noa goes on his mission and we learn the history of what’s been happing over those several generations, I was hooked.
Just from this project doing well and seeing the directors vision it gives me hope for the zelda live action film. I wonder if they are going to go for a darker tone like twilight princess
I love that you rocked the Sailor Moon shirt! I love your reviews but I wish you would bring back the Hilariocity reviews thoses are my favorite ❤ well with that been said keep up the great work 😊
Everyone should check out the 5 original movies, they're something in their own right: Planet of the Apes (1968): Great, thought provoking Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970): Good, then fuckin weird af Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971): Time travel comedy/on-the-run thriller? Conquest for the Planet of the Apes (1972): Euro-action/spy-esque, wide-angles, zooooms! Víva la Révolution de les Apes! Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973): Sober, simplified, and somehow resolves everything from last movies to full circle so brilliantly!
They are masterpiece script movies, people doent know about them, most of them only watched the first one of 1968. But is extraordinaly saga all of them. I hope thay do the same in this new movies. Becaose in the Rise of planet of the apes, we can see how three astronauts are lost in the space. I HOPE they will appear in the next movie, to close the circle. Is the sense of this movies.
People are missing out by not checking out the classic saga. You might think at first that the effects don't age incredibly well, but the stories more than make up for it!
What??? The second one is pretty shittie and the third one ain't realy much better. The other 2 movies aren't probably good to only the first one is good. But also not as good as the trilogy.
Great review as usual! Love your reviews! Just back from watching it and loved it completely agree with slow being the wrong word to use ! I used it and was wrong as you said those scenes needed to be in it
You not reviewing bad movies or movies you don’t like makes me not care about your reviews anymore.I already know what you’re going to say when a review comes out
The man is a busy director now with a movie coming out soon. Why review garbage that you know nobody will watch or care for when you can make a passionate video about something you appreciate.
Saw it last night and I am still processing my thoughts on it. I think my biggest issue right now is that I didn't feel like I had enough time to develop a bond with the new characters like I did with Caesar, Rocket, Maurice and even Koba. That might explain why I didn't really like Rise on first viewing but fell in love with it the second time. Maybe a second viewing of Kingdom will do the same for me? I really enjoyed Raka but I felt like they took him away too soon. Another minor issue was the completely human voices of some of the apes. Particularly the females. I realize that over time the apes have continued to progress in their speech development but I'd prefer that they all still have a bit of ape sound to their voices. Proxima and some of the other villain apes still do but like I said, the females just sound too human. Makes it feel like just a dubbed voiceover. Certainly all the technical elements and CGI were top notch. Thought Proxima was great. Didn't really embrace the whole bird thing. I'm sure I'll like it better the second viewing. Still can't wait for the next one though!
I like the amulets necklaces the apes have, a little religious iconography but its the window of Ceasars house from Rise. It was a nice touch that ties it back to the first one and parallels human religion ie crucifixes worn by millions of people today
Glad to hear that this is a worthy sequel to the first Planet of the Apes trilogy. Thank you for this review and sigh of relief. Chris, as massive fan of sci fi and animated films, I just wanted to recommend Mars Express (2024). I saw it once and again with my family, I absolutely love it, I hope more people see it. I think you’d really enjoy this underrated gem of a sci fi animated film. Please check it out, don’t miss it and please review it to spread the love. Take care. Thank you for all the reviews over the years. Looking forward to watching your first film in theaters
Saw it today myself. I’m glad that it’s as good as it is. I definitely think Dawn and War are stronger movies but I’d put this at Rise’s level at least. I agree that it’s very clever to explore how Caesar’s story and legacy gets interpreted by apes hundreds of years after his death. I think my main gripe with the movie is that Caesar was such a compelling protagonist that it’s basically impossible for Noa to compete.
I was actually very surprised that we got a fourth planet of the apes movie prequel I thought that war for the planet of the apes was supposed to be the last one.
War was a perfect ending for Caesar, but the Apes still had a long way to go to become the dominant species. I wish Whoever wrote this new trilogy really showed HOW the apes took over and how the humans diminished because I feel like the premise for this movie should’ve been film 5 instead of 4th.
@@topbackpodcast2615 my only disappointment with war for the planet of the apes is for a movie called war for the planet of the apes there was like basically no war there's one fight at the beginning and then one fight at the end that doesn't even involve the apes really. I would have liked it if the movie was focused more on like Caesar actually being in like a war with Woody harrelson's Colonel character because the best scenes are his interactions with the colonel why couldn't we get like a actual like military war movie but with like Caesars apes versus Woody harrelson's people that kind of bummed me out a little bit. I mean it was a fine movie I just feel like the name was a little bit of low key false advertising.

So since Chris dances around any negativity in film criticism now... not mentioning anything about Mae in this review, the girl side character, probably means that wasn’t a good aspect of the film. Got it. 👍
I’m seeing this in theaters tomorrow in IMAX, and I certainly can’t wait to do so.👌🏽I was initially afraid it wouldn’t be as good without Matt Reeves, but I’m glad to know that this’s still a solid film with both a new director and main character from the previous films.
How is no one talking about the fact that 300 years after most humans died, there is a girl wearing make-up, wearing normal clothes, acting like everything happened yesterday? She knew the vault like she saw it many times before.

The visuals were fantastic, the post-apocalyptic shots of rotten buildings and also the apes' CGI. The trilogy still keeps going. 👌 7.5/10
Well in my opinion, Dawn of the Planet was still my best, nothing could replace the role of Caesar, he brings the movies together.
I think Raka still alive! He will be a mentor for Noa being the new leader and caeasar descendant
so this means he lived more than 300 years ?
Just watched the previous Trilogy..i forgot how good War was, unbelievable
War is the best one
:) My most anticipated movie of the year, and it's another winner for this franchise.
Thank you for this, Chris. Your review for War for the Planet of the Apes had me even more excited to see that back in the day, and that ended up as my favorite film of the last decade. I trust your opinion now as I did then. Can't wait to see the film this weekend, Chris.
I have never seen any of the apes movies dating back decades. Now I will have to check them out.
They're worth it, especially 2 and 3.
What?! You're wasting your time! Go and watch the trilogy.
@@LuisManuelLealDias 1 is a great build up to 2 and 3. So I think you have to watch it
@@koek1122you don't need to, but I recommend it, yeah.
Disney approached Wes Bell to direct the film as an apology for cancelling his Mouse Guard film.
He was already attached before the Fox acquisition.
This review is a relief. Didn't know what to expect.
Chris doesn’t say negative things about movies anymore on purpose because he wants to be a filmmaker himself so he thinks he has a better chance of directing a big movie or something. Never trust the modern Chris Stuckmann for a movie opinion
💯 I see that too.
I really liked how Noa was written and portrayed. He was vulnerable and conflicted but also responsible, intuitive, and good-natured. I also liked that they had us follow an ape on the verge of adulthood because it positioned him differently than Ceasar was in the second and thid films
I really appreciate your review, mate. You're doing a great job, buddy.
Do love a Stuckmann/Jahns duo upload

Yeah was thinking that! Maybe they should do a duo review for the viewers
@@BrayOfTheDonkey Jeremy will say it's dogshit if it is or will score it in any form. Chris won't, he would just tiptoe walk around a movie if it's bad, so they would only do it for "good" movies

The movie begs you to watch it😂
Expected this to be good and glad to see a positive consensus, can't wait to see it.
I felt the same thing. It took a little while to get going, but when it did, it was really good.
As always great analysis man.
your reviews are truly the best. concise, non-spoilery, and most importantly, SUPPORTIVE OF THE FORM.
Just from this project doing well and seeing the directors vision it gives me hope for the zelda live action film. I wonder if they are going to go for a darker tone like twilight princess
The thumbnail made me so worried. So relieved this movie turned out great.
I get my movie reviews from you in the swamplands of UA-cam. Good job sir! Keep em' coming!
Great review! Looking forward to this.

After seeing this movie how do you feel about Wes Ball as director of the already announced Zelda film?
I love that you rocked the Sailor Moon shirt!
I love your reviews but I wish you would bring back the Hilariocity reviews thoses are my favorite ❤ well with that been said keep up the great work 😊
Everyone should check out the 5 original movies, they're something in their own right:
Planet of the Apes (1968): Great, thought provoking
Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970): Good, then fuckin weird af
Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971): Time travel comedy/on-the-run thriller?
I lost interest in other old movies after watching beneath the planet of apes but man original is a masterpiece
What??? The second one is pretty shittie and the third one ain't realy much better. The other 2 movies aren't probably good to only the first one is good. But also not as good as the trilogy.

Great review as usual! Love your reviews! Just back from watching it and loved it completely agree with slow being the wrong word to use ! I used it and was wrong as you said those scenes needed to be in it
I just left seeing it in Imax. It was great.
Awesome review Chris, can’t wait to see your movie
It was a nice touch that ties it back to the first one and parallels human religion ie crucifixes worn by millions of people today
just saw it at an early screening a few hours ago. it was fantastic!
When is your Tubi exclusive movie coming out 😮
theater release loser.
Love your reviews and love this movie franchise, just one question though, have you moved away from grading movies? I’ve noticed last few of your reviews you haven’t really been grading them only giving your thoughts
Hey Chris I think it'd be a good idea if you used your voice to talk about Coppola's upcoming film Megalapolis. The trailer dropped this week and it'd be good to have your voice spurring your base on to investing in that film to potentially help some for other films like it to be made.
Yea, bro. I agree with your thoughts! I loved it too. ❤
