      That just shows how f'ed up he got in that lab. To me that makes his character more intriguing. A naturally peaceful animal that was abused so much it turned into a brute.

    The fact that bonobos are generally passive goes to show just how badly those scientists treated Koba prior top the movie for it to make him as aggressive as he was.

    I love the fact that the dominant male gorilla takes in orphans. I didn't know that. Reminds me of a video I saw on UA-cam of the big, dominant gorilla in a wild troop enjoying some quiet time cuddling with a couple of very small juvenile gorillas. It's so freaking adorable.

      You should see the female orangutan who drives a golf cart around the preserve (by herself mind you and better than most humans )… sometimes she even brings her buddy, a dog, along for the ride. Someone set her driving to The Sopranos music and it’s absolutely hilarious. Especially when she drives by the tiger cage and speeds up and gives the biggest FU smirk of all time.
      Her name is Rambo and they even got her a new electric vehicle that looked so cool. Their intelligence is amazing !

    In the films, the human DNA in the retrovirus not only affected their intelligence, but also caused some small morphological changes. This explains why they were able to speak and walk upright more comfortably.

      And it is a logical explanation too! The whole point of the virus was to reverse Alzheimer’s and the way it degrades every neural part of our body. So it probably has the ability to restore motor control and speech abilities, since they can be lost under the affects of the disease. So the idea of human-like animals without such degradation getting this boost and being able to walk better and be able to start talking isn’t too insane

    The way she said that orangutans rely a lot on fruits does break my heart, knowing that the deforestations are still massively happening in Indonesia, esprecially in Kalimantan/Borneo.

    Excellently informative! My one quibble is that Koba wasn't meant to be a typical bonobo, but one who had been tortured so much and so often that he lost his essential nature--underlined by his demise when Caesar says, "Koba not ape."

    Koba fits so nicely into the slot of "Beautiful Evil" his actions are totally understandable and his hatred is pure for justifiable reasons, so much so that he's not entirely wrong in his assumptions; with the third film basically proving his point. One of the best antagonists ever put to screen.

    The tie-in novel "Rise of the Planet of the Apes: Firestorm" does a good job of showing how Koba's bonobo-like playfulness was crushed by the years of mistreatment he suffered.

    As a spaniard it really shocked me to hear her mention Snowflake. According to my mom, people were very sad when he died. In spanish his name was "Copito de nieve" which does indeed translate to snowflake, but the cuteness of the original name is lost when you translate it. The name would be better translated as Little snowflake, or Small snowflake

      I actually “adopted” an orangutan and get updates on a cute one cared for by the BOS foundation in Indonesia and get updates on her progress frequently. I highly recommend it because they get many orphans and the contribution through “adoption” allows them to pay for the caregivers, the food, and the medical staff. Many of the orangutan also get released into protected areas after they are taught essential life skills. Good luck! I hope you find a great orangutan to adopt!

    I believe they explained Koba’s atypical behavior in the movie. He had severe PTSD, which he acquired during his time living with humans. He showed no sign of aggression until the humans appeared.

    I like how human changed both kobas and ceasers natural instinct. Kobas a bonobo who tend to be gentle, was tortured by human all his life and became violent and dangerous. While ceaser a chimpanzee who tend to be violent and dangerous, was raised by humans and became a caring leader.

    Yes, the trilogy may be slightly unrealistic in terms of communication, behaviour etc… however, in the trilogy they’ve had the R-12 drug! They won’t act exactly the same as real life apes. Ceaser grew up around humans and so picked up much of the behaviour and habits of those people, which he then passed on to his tribe of apes.
    Great video though! Interesting to compare the movie’s apes to real life ones.

      As other commented have said, Koba’s atypical Bonobo behavior actually enhances his character because it indirectly demonstrates just how poorly he was treated by humans.

      So, she’s not saying this movie should’ve done more research. She’s discussing how real life apes are similar or different to these movie counterparts. There’s a lot of people that would probably go and see these movies and assume that all apes act like Caesar and the others. She’s disputing this and telling us how they would really act.

    The CGI still really holds up. This is personally my favorite trilogy but I still have a lot of love for other trilogies but this one just really clicked with me.

    I swear this trilogy needs to be talked about more, it’s one of those times where prequels are as good and arguably better than it’s predecessor film. And also Serkis’ performance as Caesar is spectacular.

    Adversities can really change a creature. Last year during lockdown I saw all the street dogs ganging up together and attacking and killing a stray pig for food. These dogs were otherwise really passive and used to sit outside shops being fed by passersby.

    Good commentary. I'm looking for a palaeontologist talking about all the micro adaptations that were required to allow our last common ancestor with chimps / bonobos to develop into us. Not just brain size, but also brain organisation. The multitude of adaptations to make large scale sociality possible. Changes to the hyoid bone and bones of the inner ear to allow us to make human speech sounds and to hear them accurately...

    Unlike all the other apes in the films Maurice knew sign language and how to communicate with it before he was even infected by the virus.
    Subtle way for them to show how intelligent orangutans are.

    Its funny that Rocket, being the more hostile and antagonistic character is a bonobo, a usually more docile ans friendlier great ape.

      No Koba is a bonobo, rocket is chimp. It's possible that rocket maybe similar to a hairless chimp.

    I really wish they would have made another character a bonobo. The contrast would have been great.
    Also, I didn't know about silverbacks taking care of of juvenile males who lost their mothers. I love that so much. I'm not sure even bonobos do that very often, as your rank amongst bonobos is determined by your mother. If you lose your mother, you lose all rank.

      The fact that bonobos are generally passive goes to show just how badly those scientists treated Koba prior top the movie for it to make him as aggressive as he was.

      Lake is a Bonobo. There are alot of different characters. But the movie is portrayed really well under each ape's circumstances
