  • Turtles frontman Howard Kaylan recently participated in an installment of the GRAMMY Museum's An Evening With series. Before an intimate audience at the Museum's Clive Davis Theater, Kaylan discussed the Turtles' hits "Happy Together" and "You Showed Me," and detailed his new memoir, Shell Shocked: My Life With The Turtles, Flo & Eddie, And Frank Zappa, Etc., among other topics. Kaylan also performed a brief set, including "Happy Together."
"We went into the studio, we cut the song, [and] we walked out of there absolutely knowing ” for the only time in my life ” that ["Happy Together"] was a number one record," said Kaylan. "It's never happened before, or since, so it was a very, very strange and almost mystical recording."
Born in New York, Kaylan moved to Southern California during the rise of the surf music craze of the early '60s and subsequently formed the Turtles with guitarist and singer/songwriter Mark Volman. In 1965 the Turtles' hit cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" helped their debut album of the same name crack the Top 100 on the Billboard 200. The band followed with 1966's You Baby/Let Me Be and 1967's Happy Together, the latter of which reached No. 25 on the strength of the infectious title track. "Happy Together," the Turtles' lone No. 1 hit to date, was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame in 2007. The Turtles scored additional Top 10 hits ” "Elenore" and "You Showed Me" ” before disbanding in 1970.

This song came out in January of 1969 when I was in boot camp in San Diego. our barracks had a radio and it was not supposed to be on after lights out but very often it was and this was being played often. This song takes me right back to that time. When I got out of boot camp I bought the Battle of the bands album just for this song and still have it.f...great memories.

beautiful story...and song. I'm glad Kaylan and Co "heard" what it could be....a bit sad/mysterious/haunting. "You Showed Me" has so much depth.

Howard is full of so many great stories. That broken organ sounds great on this record with that slow lumbering funeral march beat.

But NOT entirely accurate -- he likes to embellish storys . The Byrds version was NOT like a "Freddy and The F^cking Dreamers' track . It was a decent track that you slowed down ( because of other circumstances )

Love the Turtles, Kaylan's writing and singing and Barbata's driving beats were fun to dance to.. Hot 60s Dance Band.

Jim Mcguinn (AKA Roger Mcguinn of the Byrds) wrote this wonderful song, made even better by the broken organ in the recording studio that couldn't be played any way but slow. This is still my favorite Turtles song!

I absolutely adore the song. If it was played that fast I wouldn't even listen to it.

I’ve always liked the Turtles. I guess they had a wild side, but the music was generally fun, clean, and great music if you took a really nice girl out.

The Byrds version has been released and it is faster and more rhythmic, but it is hardly a fast Merseybeat song. The problem with it is the Gene Clark vocals. McGuinn says he played it for the band at a slow speed to teach them the chords which certainly sounds a lot more likely than that they heard it played by a producer who only had a pump organ organ available. I wasn't there. McGuinns solo version is the best and is played slower than the Byrds and faster than the Turtles. Don't know why he did not sing it in the Byrds since it obviously suited his voice better than Gene Clarks. Maybe it was that rather than hurt Gene Clarks feelings, he decided to get his royalties out of it by giving it to the Turtles.

@@jamesfitzgerald6636 Actually, there's a version of it on here, sung by Clark and McGuinn that bears out what Stephen says. YA might want to actually check it out before you dismiss reality out of hand!!

Yet , Kaylan compares The Byrds to Freddy and The Dreamers , some pay-back for 'giving' to The Turtles .
