- In 1984, Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of The Turtles hit Milwaukee headlining the first Happy Together Tour. Here they're interviewed on WISN-TV's "The MORE Show" by Liz Ayers and local Milwaukee radio personality Dan Markus. The "Bobby" that Mark refers to is Bobby Rivers, who went on to fame on VH-1. Topics range from Turtles hits to Frank Zappa.
I can't believe how young Mark Volman looks. He looks like he did in the 60's.
I can't believe how old Howie looks, all grey.
He's not much older than Mark.
He was only 37 years old here. Now unfortunately he was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. I saw him on stage in July 2003 and it was noticeable. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the last that we see of him.
No kidding. Amazing.
It's funny how Howard looks like he's 80 and Mark looks like he's 22, lol.
truly
volman is my teacher this semester and man is he awesome
Your teacher?? How so??? Wow.....
At Vanderbilt?

Sweet Flo from Frank zappa as well.
I love him in 200 motels when he was with Frank Zappa.
The Turtles were my first band I truly loved. Second Dave Clark Five. I was seven years old in '65. It's 2022 and You Baby is still awesome. Thank You TURTLES!
I think the fact that your “Second” favorite band was The Dave Clark Five (??!!) speaks volumes to your quality musical tastes.
(You forgot to mention the Beatles) 🫢
For 55 years, everybody, young and old, who hears "Happy Together" loves it. Just like "Joy to the World".
I listened to these guys in Omaha when they performed with 3 other groups. At the end of the concert, the turtles asked the audience if we wanted to her the concert again. The turtles repeated the concert! Amazing, will always be my favorite group!!
Howard had the best voice in the 60s.
Great band one of the 60's best. Howard had a beautiful voice and Mark's background was great.
Please keep Mark in your prayers he was just diagnosed with Lewy body dementia in June.
These guys are great: genuine, down to earth, funny, really open and sharp thinkers.
now ,.... THESE are 2 Rock LEGENDS RIGHT HERE !! baby !!
I loved them with Frank Zappa. "Just Another Band From LA" is still my fav Zappa record. I also loved it when they sang their "bullet" on the Zappa live album. I still sing Magdalena in honor of Howard.
You’re mom will never know, she’s plying bridge with the girls
I have that Zappa live album with Flo and Eddie. It's Live at the Fillmore East. The great Aynsley Dunbar on drums.
The turtles were and are the best!! Turntable heaven!!!
These guys were about 2 years ahead of me in high school. Westchester High School, Los Angeles, CA. They had a band (local) called the Crossfires. They're still doing the Happy Together tour.
Howard and Mark performed as Flo and Eddie after the Turtles then with Zappa and the Mothers. I still remember a Saturday night party - guy walks in with the new Mothers of Invention album out that very day. Off came the shrink wrap and onto his parent's Zenith console. I could die tomorrow and be happy..
Everybody that hears these guys ends up loving them.
The Turtles are awesome. Loved them since the start.
Mark Volman speaks very well. I was not expecting that.
I noticed that. Very eloquent and not goofy. I was very impressed!
He has a Masters Degree and is a college professor.
I am not surprise. In their 60's music videos they look like nerds.
He also aged much better than Howard
That their post break-up mentor was Frank Zappa says volumes. Zappa is a musical genius. Interesting to hear they did sound tracks for such a diversity of kids' shows.
Eddie, are you kidding? ;-)
Ya I never realized they did that stuff for kids shows. While the turtles like a lot of those bands didn’t write a lot of their hits these guys really did a lot of original and diverse work
I had no idea who these guys were until I saw a clip of them interviewing Bowie on TV from the late 70s and saw the sidebar links (I'm an 80s kid). Then I looked them up. Talented, funny, and smart dudes! I'll bet their experiences would make an interesting, offbeat Netflix-type series.
I have 10 of their songs on my Spotify list....love this group
Turtles played a double bill with the Iron Butterfly at Massey Hall in Toronto in 1968 or 69. Led Zeppelin was playing up the street.
We showed up at the back door and helped carry in the gear. Yesss. Another free concert for just a little bit of work.
That's awesome considering they loved to goof on Led Zep in their live shows:

The turtles always be one of them most popular bands of all time.
Milwaukee girl here! Thanks for posting this, I've recently become THEE biggest Turtles fan; their music is phenomenal! I have a huge crush on 1965 Howard!
I happened to run across this video tonight. Both these gentlemen seemed to be authentic with good hearts. They clearly wanted to entertain us and bring happiness. Thanks Turtles!
Amazing that the Happy Together Tour still continues today, albeit without Howard.
I listened to them first through Frank Zappa's music and got to truly appreciate the two of them for the wonderful imaginations, vocals, and fun they provided. Thank you for a great copy of a good interview.
I saw the Happy Together Tour in '85 in Spokane and it was GREAT!!
For the past few weeks I have been fascinated by these two, would love to be in that class
I was working with Liz and Dan at WISN-Tv Milwaukee, and got to see the Happy Together concert that night. Great talent. Wonderful memories.
Was [that night] the same date as this interview in 1984?
I was 16 when these guys boomed. They were fantastic.
Son encantadores especialmente Mark Volman, ojalá sigan bien en sus vidas.
Playing at the Eagle's Club!? The following night is Bingo, and then on Saturday is the annual Crab Feed! Saw Flo and Eddie New Year's Eve at Winterland, San Francisco (1975) opening for the Tubes. They had a great band and put on a wonderful show. Best wishes to you all.
Music from the Heart....always loved, heard and remembered. Carry it forward. GPM-53.
Always dug their music. White Whale Label. I got one of Mark Volman's drum sticks his was using as a percussionist piece. 2 sticks. It was a Great Performance and l got to see them. Great Video! Then saw them years later on the Happy Together Tour. Both on Long Island.
Excelentes! Marcaram uma geração 🙌🏼👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wow, Howard is only 9 years older than me?! I feel rejuvenated! I have almost exactly that same look almost 40 years later, except my moustache is whiter.
Mark is still doing Happy Together tours with Gary Pucket, The Association, and several other groups added over the years. The singer from The Archie's replaced Howard several tours back.
Sadly, Mark was recently diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia
My youngest son is 20 here in a few days. He looks like Mark Voleman. It's uncanny.
They are great always
I love these two Hippies!
I got news for you they were never hippies.. don't fall for that BS.. let's just say they are wealthy hippies
@@paulgentile1024 A wealthy hippy is still a hippy
I saw the Turtles in 1967 at University of Illinois, Champaign, Il. It was great! The second act was Johnny Rivers all by himself dressed all
in white- he was super great 💙 🎶🎵
I saw them in '84 when they came to Spokane with the bands they mentioned above including Gary Lewis and the Playboys in their "Happy Together Tour".....it was GREAT!!
Great historic video!
I wish I had a picture of both of them sign that would be awesome
Howard Kaylan was 37 years old in 1984, but looks like 67. That is due to the gray hair and the beard.
Einar Beeking yea he is so weird
awesome models And you’re not?
@@awsomemodels Weird? How so???
@@chatman2a I am weird actually :P
@@USCG.Brennan Oh i meant his hair and beard are kinda weird not him ;)
You know you're old when you did your oldies tour 30 years ago !
+Dave Hansen But they're still going strong today. There are clips from shows they did this year on UA-cam.
I just went to see it last week and they havent lost a beat!
I've seen these men in person twice. First time was at the Dallas, TX Sportatorium with The Grass Roots (Rob Grill anyway) and Dave "Elvis" Tapley in Oct. 1990. Another time was the July 4 Celebration in Garland, TX in 1999. When they performed my favorite song of theirs, "She'd Rather Be With Me", Mark would make a show of hitting the cowbell with a mallet then bouncing the mallet on the ground a few times.
Howard is a great looking guy without the beard.
Love the Flo&Eddie collaboration..fav songs fom them are ,"Feel Older Now & Nickey Hoy"..plus they're work on TRex Electric Warrior especially Planet Queen is phenomenal 🎼🎶😎
I saw this show in Houston and the flash dance song was great! Water and all.
Met these guys years ago. Awesome folks.
The entire group is still alive
So relaxing voices. Asmr
Mr. Markus appears to be the one who posted it. Nice little interview, and kudos to the local personalities.
They had amazing songs
They were a fun rock n roll group. Elenore was a song that hit home in a nice way. " Even though your folks hate me". That is followed by i think i love. Also a real band who played live.
This show wasn't shown on tv in N.Y., but, a wonderful interview. Saw the Turtles twice. 😊
The Mother's stuff was truly unique.
Which Mother?
@@synthonaplinth5980 The invented one.
This brings me back ten years earlier to a sunday night in 1974 on los angeles rock station kmet with flo and eddie by the fireside. They talked about guacamole for much of that show which was a new subject for me.
Howard started greying when he was in his early 20's he's always looked older than he was look back at the early Turtles videos he was 17 when they had their first hit and he looked 30.
That was a pretty good interview.
I saw them in Central Park, New York City playing with the Mothers of Invention, minus Frank Zappa. It was a great concert, and they released balloons into the air above the audience. The concert was in the early 70's, so I don't remember too much, but I think they were listed as Flo and Eddie.
Saw them at the Ritz in the early '80s. The Ritz's video setup was perfect for their act.
Very smart, genuinely nice guys.
I WAS THERE . I'LL NEVER FORGET IT.
About halfway in, Howard paraphrases Mothers bassist Jeff Simmons' comment about bands and armies. This can be heard on the "Playground Psychotics" collection.
"You are Volman ?"- Rance Muhammitz, circa 1971.
Also; there’s Larry the Dwarf dressed up like Frank Zappa, Let’s ask him “what’s the deal?”
great NY radio DJ back in late 1980s
That must have been the year I saw those groups live in Rancho Bernardo, California
Whatever...the "Turtles" ROCKED big time for quite a little while...got their Golden Hits LP vinyl record album that pretty much has all that needs to be said...
Always love
Backing vocals for T Rex amazing.
Mind boggling that Howard was in high school just 22 years prior.
Omg Volman hadn't aged at all and the other dude looked like he aged 50 years..good lord.
Drugs will fuck you man. I couldn't believe this was 1984 making him 37 here. WTF?
It's not drugs, the guy was just hoary, and insisted on using that beard, his skin looked just fine for a man in his 40's
@@martinzuccari9615 What is hoary???
@@USCG.Brennan It means gray haired, i forgot you shouldn't use it as noun.
@@martinzuccari9615 Never heard that term before and I've been around awhile!
I thought it meant that he liked "women of ill repute" or something like that! Hahaha...... ;-)
Heavenly! He skis too.
Howard Kaylan was 37 then
Today..I would give my fucking arm to have seen that damn concert they were playing...wow
That’s a funny story about the demo for “Happy Together.”
🐢My favorite song is "So Happy Together"🐢
"You got your armies, you got your rock n roll bands."
A reference to bass player Jeff Simmons' comments on FZs style of running his bands in 1970, right before he quit the band.
This was 38 years ago.
A good song--and in this case, songs--go a long way.
The female interviewer looks and sounds like June Cleaver from Leave it to Beaver.
Love Flo and Eddie
This interview was in 1984 which would have made Mark and Howard both 36 or 37 at the time.
The Turtles BEST song is "She's My Girl".
Nice hoodie
❤️❤️♥️♥️♥️❤️❤️❤️♥️♥️♥️❤️❤️🎄🎄🎄
Mark Volman must be in a different time dimension than Howard (and most of the rest of us for that matter). It's really rather amazing how much slower he seems to be aging... good genes I suppose.
Flo & Eddie!
Who doesn't love wide o vision?
I love Strawberry Shortcake music. Is that cool
KHJ BOSS radio Los Angeles....Aloha
T.Rex - Electric Warrior - check out the backing vocals!!
Flo and Eddie from Frank Zappa!
I feel old. Lol
Heavenly. Way to rep!
This was better than 200 hotels
~ "Motels."
And to think Mark is two months older than Howard. Then again, Howard looked like he was 37when he was 18. Here, he is 37 but looks 60. Not that this is relevant in any way, but....
I do wonder if hair dye would have made him look younger? There's no lines on his face, but he went grey QUICK. Even in their heyday he looked about 40.
makes me wonder how many drugs Howard did in his day, aged terribly
strange how time works IF this interview is from 84 and Kaylen might have been born in 47. That would make him 37 when he did this interview. Both Volman and Kaylen were born the same year, according to their autobiography. They do not look the same age
Howard kind of looks like Riff Raff from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Westchester High School in Westchester, CA. Saw them perform as the Turtles and as Flo and Eddie.
Lol. I wish I could get a job as music nostalgia expert. I think I could do it.
