  • Turtles frontman Howard Kaylan recently participated in an installment of the GRAMMY Museum's An Evening With series. Before an intimate audience at the Museum's Clive Davis Theater, Kaylan discussed the Turtles' hits "Happy Together" and "You Showed Me," and detailed his new memoir, Shell Shocked: My Life With The Turtles, Flo & Eddie, And Frank Zappa, Etc., among other topics. Kaylan also performed a brief set, including "Happy Together."
"We went into the studio, we cut the song, [and] we walked out of there absolutely knowing ” for the only time in my life ” that ["Happy Together"] was a number one record," said Kaylan. "It's never happened before, or since, so it was a very, very strange and almost mystical recording."
Born in New York, Kaylan moved to Southern California during the rise of the surf music craze of the early '60s and subsequently formed the Turtles with guitarist and singer/songwriter Mark Volman. In 1965 the Turtles' hit cover of Bob Dylan's "It Ain't Me Babe" helped their debut album of the same name crack the Top 100 on the Billboard 200. The band followed with 1966's You Baby/Let Me Be and 1967's Happy Together, the latter of which reached No. 25 on the strength of the infectious title track. "Happy Together," the Turtles' lone No. 1 hit to date, was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame in 2007. The Turtles scored additional Top 10 hits ” "Elenore" and "You Showed Me" ” before disbanding in 1970.

If the 'Turtles 'would have just kept being the Turtles they would never needed be intimidated by the Beatles.. Good example would be the Rolling Stones. Sad because they had so much creativity and talent...Another great band was the 'Kinks' they were always commentators of Life. So good, so good.

Kaylan-Volman were never going to be Lennon-McCartney or Jagger-Richards。

Jim Tucker should have just laughed it off - but there again, youth takes things too seriously. After all, Lennon was obviously holding back.

@Miguel Oniga If you are referring to the Beatles not playing their own instruments, you are wrong. They most certainly did play and experiment with all manner of instruments and formulate Jazz chords/arrangements with the help of George Martin as a result producing some very good music. Personally, I was not much of a Beatles fan - more of a Kinks, Rolling Stones poetry/rocker. Nonetheless, never take anything too seriously in life as things change with words spoken thoughtlessly, often said ‘on the fly’, taken out of context. However, there is not need for rudeness as recounted in this video, but there again; additionally, there is no place for other people believing that their recollections are true and therefore right without the possibility of retort from those towards such comments are postulated. All cultures have their own specific foibles and idiosyncrasies, just go with the flow as life is too short.

Lennon made some rude comments to Carol King too. She wouldn't divulge what he said to her.

Supposedly he just didn't speak to her, kind of a rude snub. He later apologized and I believe said he was intimidated by her. Elton John tells a story where Lennon kicks Andy Warhol out of his hotel room and is rude to him. Yet Warhol was Sean's godfather. He and John were lifelong friends. Contrasts. Guess Lennon was a complex human.
