Howard Kaylan - Story Behind "Happy Together" | GRAMMYs
/ thegrammys
What grabbed me when I first heard "Happy Together" was the beat...I bought the 45 and listened to it about 100 times the 1st day!
Me too.
I was 29 in 1965 and love this time
Interviewer was highly professional allowing Howard to tell his story. I heard Howard interviewed other times with an interviewers who keep interrupting him which is unprofessional. This was a fine interview and Howard told a cool story. Thank you.
"I listen to all of its fragmented parts separately, and there's no magic there. But somehow you put it all together, and it turns into more than the sum of its parts." It's the slight catch in your voice, Howard, when you sing certain lines, not all the time but here and there. You sounded like you were inside the wonder of falling in love. That's the magic.
He's a real nice guy. I had the pleasure of working with him.
The song starts quietly then builds into a crescendo then goes quiet and builds again. It is what the great composers did.
A perfect pop single.
Paul Beaver plays synthesizer on that
It’s a perfect song
This song is so beautifully perfect I heard it in a grubby toilet in Queensland in a line of 4 guys at the urinals and it still really lifted me high!!
And Zappa crowned it. One of my favorite songs of the sixties. My other favorite song was written by my guitar teacher's son. He was in the group the New Breed. I got to play along a few times when they needed a fill in guitar player. The song was Green Eyed Women written by Timothy B. Schmit.
Oh Mr. Kaylan, I really enjoyed your interview, also I love your music.
Sad to see him old. I’d just seen those magical videos from the 60’s
Sadly Howard's appearance changed drastically aging-wise from the time of the "Elenore" video appearances in 1968 ua-cam.com/video/dPnqE0dRhmM/v-deo.html
to an interview he and Mark Volman did in 1984 with a show called "More". ua-cam.com/video/apiP6HyqSxM/v-deo.html
He and Mark were the same age (both born in 1947) but the differences in what you see in their appearance is remarkable. Howard looks so much older and they say that living hard and partying hard can age you. I was shocked by the contrast between both men. Just 16 years between the song and interview and Mark looked more like age 37-38. Howard looked much older.
Howard did have drug and alcohol problems and in 2018 had both back and heart surgery. He had successful surgeries but I'm not sure if he will be or did rejoin(ing) the "Happy Together" concerts with Mark and other 1960s groups.
I am glad your group mastered 'Happy Together'. I like all your songs, but Happy Together started the love affair.
"Our new single hit the charts this week with a bullet!"
Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman are two legends.
The Happy Together chorus melody notes were actually the open strings of the guitar from high E to low E (E-B-G-D-A-E), as played from bottom to top in a tuning check.
Great interview!
One of my old time favorites 🧡
Thank you Turtles 🙏
& so are you . Loved your book
Loved your book Howard !
I love the Turtle group all theirs songs, good memories when I first came to USA was one of the song "Happy together " I heard in the radio, even though back then in 1972 I don't understand English to comprehend the lyrics but I love it. Back then we heard inocents, easy beautiful lirycs in the song compared today OMG!! is awful!! the devil is unleashed.
I love his speaking and singing voice.
It stands as a perfect song. A real gem!!!!!
I love you Howard, the best guest I’ve had on my radio show in Halifax NS -the Shadow (John Darrell)
Yeah, a great tune!
seattwa Howard lived in the Seattle area until recently.
Great song
Happy in the title is pure pop gold. Look today at I'm Happy. I guess that is his look because he has that on most of the clips here, a jacket reminiscent of The Prisoner TV series.
They should record their version of the original demo.
I would always listen to the 45 record when I bought it.
I liked Happy Together the first time I heard it,and said it was headed for the top,as I said with the Carpenters first hit, Cat Steven's Wild World and Dire Straits,Sultans of Swing. It's wasnt often I foretold gold ,but this was four times that I did,and I had some others too.
This is Good...
The perfect Kaplan song
F*#kin' great song? Oh, hell yeah! ❤☮🌎
I'm old, too, now...I was a BIG fan of this band in the 1960's and beyond. I don't know if people say this about me, but, Howard doesn't look like Howard anymore. AT ALL. 😪 I miss that era.
Wow!
He forgot to mention how much the vocals were influenced by Brian Wilson.
Especially at the end!! Very pet sounds 🎶🎵🏞
Apparently it wasn't so "abysmal" after all.
He's not looking good....
And this is seven years ago.
He quit touring awhile back and Ron Dante took over for him.
The Turtles could save a lot on money if they got rid of that worthless member, Flo.
I like Howard, but he should use his birth name Kaplan instead of the made-up and fake-sounding Kaylan. There is no such name. No one except maybe his kids was born with that name.
Me and you, and you and me.......tralalalala.... Too formulated pop pap for me. I'd rather hear Paul Revere & the Raiders or The Beach Boys doing this kinda stuff.
As these guys were close with Zappa, I think there was a cynical streak behind it, _"Let's construct something that's so out and out syruppy and top 40 Monkee-ish ,people just can't resist and are forced to buy it"_ .It's a shame these actually very smart guys weren't able to write this themselves; it would've been an old age insurance.
so why come here? haha ;) Not dissing you in at all, and lord knows I'm not interested in some sort of online 'yer mum' argument.
As for Frank Zappa- his music hasn't aged well. I've never been able to abide it myself, yet appreciate it's relevance to the time in which it was made, but Turtles, Monkees music is timeless.
fuck you
It captured the beauty of young love perfectly!
They are the best of the best...!
Gosh! You are such a miserable, unhappy human being! Why come here and waste your time on something you despise? Go ahead and write hits yourselve, master of know it all 🙄
