Wow!! I was born in ‘71 and I LOVE these cats!! Just some perfect pop songs.i was a teen in the 80’s and I wouldn’t change for anything except MAYBE being a teen in the mid 60’s!! STILL the greatest musical period in history!! Really, everything after was just redoing what was done then. Music was just wide open then and you heard new stuff that had really never been heard before. Definitely a turning point. Not just for music but the whole world.
The Turtles were pure GODNESS! Love love LOVE THEM! Elenore is still my fav, but heck, they’re all awesome! Love the relationship between the lead duo and their antics. I miss those days - a great time to be a pre-teen!
Wow! I just became a fan of "The Turtles" today, After listening to "Happy Together" on the radio, and went looking for that music. Harmony is their middle name! It's a shame people don't use harmony to that level now. Well, if we can call music the things most of the things we hear today!
Hi - I did a writeup recently on She's My Girl with the three octaves signaling his tiptoes out and then back, his arrival into the sunshine, and his soaring descriptions . . . It's one magnificent song, stunningly arranged, yet indicative in its quality of soo many others in the Turtles' oeuvre!
Remember most of their Songs, know all the words Of those I really liked, some of these seen them on tV as a kid or listened to them on my Transistor Radio. Our 60's version of the Walkman
Such a versatile group. I have their first LP on vinyl. Never heard "House On The Hill" before - a great piece of psychedelic pop. The Turtles hailed from Inglewood-Westchester near LA Int'l Airport (LAX) They began as a gnarly surf band called The Crossfires. Along came Folk Rock, and POW - They became The Turtles. Mark and Howard later joined Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention, and became "The Fluorescent Leach & Eddie" aka "Flo & Eddie".
Unfortunately "The House on the Hill" did not chart in Billboard Magazine in 1969. The album reference was for "Turtle Soup" which contained the singles "You Don't Have to Walk in the Rain" and "Love in the City".
Can't argue that. But, unlike Barbata, Dinelli never received the recognition for what he was. Speaking of Dinelli, I'd long noticed that he and Keith Moon shared a thread of similarity here and there. Then out of the blue I realized the influence.... Gene Krupa. Krupa founded the modern drum kit, and he played it too... well.
Yes ,John ended up In 'The Starship' / Yet, "Dino "was miles above everyone then . To see Him live was truly an experience or on any of Rascals Tunes .
Of all of the 60's hosts, Mike was maybe the most welcoming to the young artists. Many others would belittle the long haired hippies, but he focused on what they were doing, rather than what they looked like.
At that time some criticised them (including John Lennon!) for being shallow pop, hence the charts hits. But they are good songs! And compared to the rubbish which passes for popular music now, deep and sophisticated!
Raymond Kitchen Listen to John Seiter's playing on 'Love In The City'. His playing is amazing!!! Just because he can't mime along to Barbatta's drumming doesn't mean shit.
@@raymondkitchen6137 Barbata was technically better and a "showman". That aspect used to bug the others at times! John Seiter had a good voice and was more like the rest of them. Good drummer for sure!
I believe back in the 60's you had college students getting together and starting bands. Some were popular, some not. Regardless of what talent you believe each of the band members have or don't have, they performed well together. Also, friendship back then was at time more important then fame and money.
There song "you babe" rocks ! The good use of the twelve string guitar ! George Harrison perfected it in "hard days night" . Back then music was music not this crap they have now ! I was in a rock band in the 1980s .
My Aunt Dottie was Mike's VP Liaison for Mike with Group W abd Washington Broadcasting abd Mike who I knew as Uncle Mike was just the greatest person you could know. The sound was not good as I remember it in person and this was the downhill trend for The Turtles but years later they would tour with The Happy Together Tour
'House on the hill' was about an experience John Seiter (the drummer) had. Not Spanky and Our Gang, which was my first thought, but just a family somewhere
This was after John Barbata (original drummer on this song) left the band and it was lip-synced. The Turtles were cheated out of the Hall of Fame in part because their management screwed them over and the members are no longer allowed to even use the name. They became Flo and Eddie. Tragic. Even Jimi Hendrix was a fan of theirs.
@@cmissshelleymichelleThey used Flo and Eddie because their former record company Whit Whale would not let them use their real names when they left. After many years Mark and Howard went to court to regain the right to record as themselves, They eventually got back the rights to call themselves the Turtles again. I’ve been a fan from their beginning:)
The Turtles brought me musical happiness than most already in the Rock Hall of Fame. Until the Turtles are in, I call the Hall the Rock and Roll Hall of Shame. Rappers in the hall and not the Turtles?
To me they were bubble gum.I saw them at a Zappa concert just wandering around and then they were on the next Mothers album singing about …...stuff that wasn't kid stuff.
Like The Monkees, they had their mass appeal chart hits that children and housewives could enjoy ...and then some of their other tracks were more "adult.". Of course they were around the Hollywood scene...they were young dudes with money.
At this point they had shed one guitarist, the drummer looks different from their original. The boys don’t seem to know what to make of Mike Douglas. Mark appears to be the leader
How could Mark have such a great voice and talent for harmony and also be foolish enough to wear tan chaps over blue jeans? One of the all time great singers as well as all time worst dressers.
When I saw Professor Mark Volman last year at the Happy Together Concert Tour he told the crowd, “By my size, you can tell that I like to eat,” which drew great laughter and applause from the audience. Sadly, the great Howard Kaylan was not there due to health problems. Singer Ron Dante filled in for Mr. Kaylan and did a fine job.
I like a lot of the Turtles songs, but "House on the Hill" sounds like a Fleetwood Mac song. Mark looks ridiculous in those pants, and what's with the Pinocchio nose?
Not a lip synch on "House On the Hill". Howard is singing live 60s karaoke-style with the instrumental version of the album track while the band pretends to play their instruments. Listen to the original Turtle Soup track and it will become apparent. Howard does the same thing on the Ed Sullivan "She's My Girl" performance. Be it Turtles, Mothers or Flo & Eddie, Howard Kaylan always delivers a stellar lead vocal.
@@SUPERFLY-ky7yh I saw most of the original members of The Association in 1972 at the Schaefer Beer Festival in Central Park. They were absolutely superb in concert. Their sublime vocals and expert musical instrumentations were very impressive. It was the finest concert I have ever attended.
Not really. It was easier just to have the artists mime to their records. Besides, it was all about promoting their latest records. It also allowed Mark and Howie to provide their comedy. This time Al Nichol was providing the comic relief with his nose. Their “Battle of the Bands” album, featured a picture of the band wearing tee shirts with their names. Al’s tee shirt read “And Al”.
Fun group, later to be Flo and Eddie. This of course is the record playing, and totally lip sync. These guys rarely performed live, always a little on the goofy side
A very restrained performance by Mark Volman. Usually he jumps around and acts like an idiot during each song they perform. But resorts to it during the interview. Displaying a sick need for attention.
😂 it's a song about making love? The lyrics are connected, it's 'I took her away last night' then 'off in the skies' and then 'off in the skies that's where I was last night'! It's about being in so much bliss that you feel like you're in heaven. And what murders? The manson murders? They already tried to tie themselves to Beatles songs, what more could you want?
As a teen loved these guys, forgot until tonight how much I loved them, still remember all the words, and I am 66!

It's a travesty that the Turtles aren't in the Rock Hall of Fame.
the place has become a joke, of course they should have been in there years ago
The Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame is a sham. I don't even pay attention to it anymore.
I absolutely agree... the HoF is a shameless commercial gig
Really? Wtf man.
I agree and along with the association and paul revere and the raiders should be in the rock and roll hall of fame
“ Mark is like the John Candy or John Belushi of Rock.”
❤❤ The Turtles!
They should be in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!!
They better get a move on as one of the guys has bad cancer.
I heard that Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of The Turtles feel contempt towards Jann Wener and TR&RHOF as does Terry Kirkman of The Association.

How I long to return to the days of my youth...great sounds
Yep. Barbatta was a master of the drumsticks. No doubt about it.

You can take anything John said with a pinch of salt. It's the music that counts.
VERY TALENTED HARMONY IS GREAT AND DRUM RIFFS ARE HOOKY
Its a travesty that no talk show hosts, even the ones I like, aren't as good as Mike Douglas was.
I liked them better when they were more clean cut, but their music was fantastic!! ;-)
Mike Douglas was the daytime talk show where I first saw Frank Zappa.
Jim Pons was formerly in The Leaves.
Good drummer , but Johnny Barbatta who recorded the original was their best drummer they ever had

Mike Stivik from All in the Family, Archie's son-in-law had a decent voice
