    I was a U.S. Recon Marine in Iraq in 2007 and we were authorized to carry the M1911 .45 ACP sidearm, while Infantry Marines (for the most part) were restricted to the M9 9mm...on more than one occasion I saw the difference up close and personal when a big determined hopped up bad guy got into the same room as you...they could be shot center mass by more then one 9mm round and they would keep coming. But if they were shot center mass by the M1911, they dropped where they stood. Obviously a hollow point 9mm can have much better stopping power but those rounds are against the rules of war so we are talking standard full metal jacket ammo. I also found the slimmer grip of the 1911 to be much more comfortable for me than the Beretta M9/FS-92. My 2 cents anywho.

    To get a better understanding of which round penetrates concrete better you would need solid layers of concrete of various thicknesses. The 45 will punch through thicker individual layers than the 9 or 40. Very few rounds will punch through one layer of concrete and then have the shape, velocity , and energy to punch through a second layer. Maybe the Smith and Wesson 500? In your tests, the projectiles are to deformed after the first layer of concrete to punch through a second.

      9mm is lighter and much faster so penetrates more than a 45. 45 is slow and heavy with more stopping power, but less penetration. Which is ideally what you want. You don’t want your bullets flying out the back of your intended target.

  • @Liberty2358
    @Liberty2358 Рік тому +2

    Kinetic energy is 1/2 mass times velocity squared. Speed is a bigger factor than the weight of the bullet when in come to penetration. This the same reason why a 50 grain 2000 FPS bullet can penetrate level III armor.

      If I hit you in the shoulder with a 9, it might go straight through. It might not, but if I hit you in the shoulder with a .45, you are gonna go down, and will likely lose that arm because it will shatter bone! I do not need more rounds if I know the rounds I send hit their mark. I can handle more clips with less each. The hit each has is greater. As a test in ballistic gel would indicate. I just cannot switch from that. Gimmie a long barrel M1911 any day.

  • @robertlabella5419

    What’s missing in the equation is the degree of impact. When looking at the 2nd cinder block wall one can see the degree of difference in the amount of force or impact on the surface of the 2nd cinder block wall. Look at the size of the circular percussion shadow of the .45 ACP. The distribution of percussion from the impact is visually much greater.

      @MrDirtysteve75 5 років тому +5

      Best is subjective. The 45 had more mass and mushroomed therefore creating a larger wound channel. Recoil depends on the gun. I reload and cast 45, so it's actually cheaper to shoot than 9mm which I do.load but dont cast. I shoot both, I carry both, I'm more accurate with my 45. Put a big ass hole first time and follow up may not be needed. To each their own, but I would hardly call any of these 3 rounds the best.

    This was quite interesting.
    It seems like if you need to get a bad guy through a hard barrier a fmj might be more effective due to it expanding through the hard barrier (assuming it penetrates and has enough energy left to do some damage to the bad guy).
    We all know that a hollow point is best for direct fire.
    And so we find barrier blind hollow points, which I believe are the best (but most expensive) option available.

    Might have been interesting to measure the diameter of the exit side of the hole, to assess how much cinder block was disrupted by each - or weigh the blocks before and after - same idea. I wonder about two other rounds - the vicious 7.62x25 fired out of a CZ-52 or other, and a .44 Magnum or even .357 Magnum. I would think that the issue in penetration would be retained velocity after passing through the first wall, and any of these 3 should have what it takes. But that's different from stopping power, which is probably related to the amount of energy delivered to the first wall - thus the interest in the diameter of the exit hole. I noticed that the 9mm cracked the block - but the .40 and .45 just bulldozed through it. I wonder if that's repeatable and a reflection of the 9mm's higher velocity (1190 vs 990 vs 835 f/s). And where's the .40 cal Waldo? Interesting video!

      The .40 was the biggest. But the 9mm did the most damage to the second wall and ripped the most concrete out of it’s ever so slightly smaller hole

    Now if you would look at the exit holes and compare them
    1:44 (9mm) just enough hole to let the projectile through as it is a penetrator round
    3:50 (40 cal) had more kick than the 9mm and bigger exit hole
    5:55 (45 acp) i thought a shape charge just went off😂😂

    A bigger, slower round does not mean better penetration. Quite the opposite. The 9mm is the most penetrative of them. With a +p FMJ you may have gotten through the second wall. Also, bullets dont usually disintegrate...
    Anyhow, it's not comparing apples to apples. These rounds are good for different reasons. You will always have your 9mm guys loving the increased capacity. Your 45 guys loving their stopping power. They both have their sweet spot. 40 cal too.

  • @karlchilders5420

    You should try 10mm as well, in both light load with high-velocity rounds and higher grain loads with lower FPS but more terminal energy... That would be neat to see.

      Having a 10mm 200gr round or a 10mm 135gr nosler round have completely different initial and terminal ballistics. Seeing a 10mm round leave the chamber at near rifle speeds might have a different impact (no pun intended) than the heavier, slower round eh? Especially on soft tissue where you don't want over-penetration of the target.

    You were able to recover the 9mm and the .45 bullets but not the .40 cal. Which means the 9 and 45 stayed intact creating a single wound trajectory whereas the .40 disintegrated spreading out causing more potential tissue damage if it reacted the same way when hitting flesh. So my conclusion is that if I am attacked by a cinder block I feel my choice in carrying a Glock .40 cal is a good choice.

    • @perrys62008
      @perrys62008 6 років тому +2

      my thought was the .40 cal may have been deflected by the debris of concrete on the exit side of the block, possibly sending it over the top of the block. Be interesting to see the bullet in slow mo.

    I don't know about anyone else but I like my rounds not to go through things. If you're planning on defending your home you don't want to be judging your calibre selection on it's penetration. Heavy, slow moving round that punches a big hole = putting down an intruder and not plugging a family member in the next room.

I based my opinion of it bouncing straight back and out the hole on how when shooting in the past at ranges I've had bullets or at least parts of bullets come straight back at me after hitting something hard (such as the target hanger framing).

    I wasn't surprised by the 9mm and the .40. I was surprised the .45 didn't penetrate any more than the other two.
    Let me say that I'm not a big fan of the .40. I think of it the same as the .41 Mag - a non-contender. It was thought to be a better performer than the 9mm because of it slightly larger duameter, but less effective in knock-down power than the .45. I personally doubt the .40 is anything special. I think your test proved my opinion correct. Thanks.
    I would have liked to see the blocks stacked one on another to compare the holes. Just a thought.

    I think that for next time you do a comparison type of video, you should use a tape measure and compare the size of the entrance and exit holes. At an initial glance, it appears that the entrance holes were about the same size, but there was a difference in the exit holes, again without a tape measure it is hard to tell the size of the entrance & exit holes.
    2:15 exit hole for 9 mm
    3:51 exit hole for .40 Cal
    5:55 exit hole for .45 ACP

      Only because it hit up near the top. The other two hits were a lot closer to the middle of the block. So the damage wasn't actually more. And look at the exit damage. 9mm was the least.
      I bet if the others had hit where the 9mm hit, the block might well be missing a huge chunk at the top.
