In this video we ask the important questions. How deadly/effective is your 9mm carry ammo? Here we use a Glock 17 firing 9mm vs a human torso analog from ballistic dummy labs. 9mm is a deadly round without a doubt and while the results are underwhelming (lol just 9mm) it still hopefully shows the ballistic capabilities of the round. As always we hope you enjoy!

I work in emergency medicine and I’ve seen a fair amount of gun shot wounds. Most of them are fmj from small calibers (25 acp, 22lr, 380). Those patients tend to live unless it’s to the heart, a major blood vessel, or brain stem. The patients I’ve seen with 9mm hollow points don’t live if the patient is shot in the trunk (chest or stomach). Most of the time (if not all of the time) quality hollow points pass all the way through. I personally carry Hornady critical duty because I’ve seen what it does..

so you work in emergency medicine and you have seen that the small calibers still stop and put people in the hospital yet you choose to go with a caliber that has a good chance of killing someone, for what? why is the goal always to kill? and you work in medicine where your job is to save lives. The irony.

When I started my LEO career we carried revolvers. When we transitioned to 9mm Glocks, the first duty ammo was 115 grain and the department's experience with that let them/us to change to 147 grain subsonic 9mm ammo...which had much better results and stopping power. Eventually, we changed to .40 department wide for duty carry. But off-duty, if carrying a 9mm, the 147 grain remained the preference.

10:35 New Jersey, in their INFINITE firearms wisdom, has banned JHPs for carry/self defense. So, subjects of that state have to either carry plain ball FMJ ammo, something gimmicky like Extreme Defender or Glaser Safety Slugs or CorBon Pow'r Ball, something frangible and hope it breaks up after penetrating organs, or (preferably above ALL aforementioned options) something like Federal's EFMJ which is basically a bullet that has a lead base, a rubber nose, and a very thick copper jacket that covers over all of it. It looks and feels and shoots exactly like a FMJ bullet, but when it hits something that soft copper jacket collapses into the squishy rubber nose section and squashes it flat as a pancake against the lead base section so it mushrooms and sorta achieves the same JHP expansion effect. It's not the best, but it works better than plain ball. I just love how Federal created the EFMJ. It's a humongous middle finger and FUCK YOU to the asinine legislators who brew up such ridiculous bullshit as that.

Hey bud, South Jersey here and you are mostly correct on that. We're allowed to use whatever ammo we like for self defense as long as it's in your home or on your property. All our lgs carry them. As far as a ccw, only retired LE and corrections can carry, literally no one else is given a ccw permit. That being said, most of my friends and a number of family are LE here and whether they can or not, they all carry jhp off duty. At the end of the day, this state absolutely despises citizens even owning firearms. They care more about criminals and people who aren't supposed to be here. Stay safe bud 👍

@Rick Christopher I'm 50 years old Rick, born and raised here and nothing will ever change. Even if we win in the SC, NJ will either defy the law like they normally do, or make the requirements worse than trying to get an FID card. You and I will be both horizontal before we can get a ccw. Our whole system here needs to be totally replaced for Jersey to ever change. For our 2nd rights as well as everything else, I'm leaving next year. This state is to corrupt, expensive, restricting, a police state etc, to waste anymore of my time here. I don't remember the black talon thing?

I carry Hornady critical duty +p in .45 for my bear gun and Hornady critical defense standard pressure in 9 for my concealed carry and home defense guns. My rationale is that the critical duty is going to be able to go through a wall/bear skull/car door if I need it to, and the critical defense isn't going to over penetrate when I don't want it to.

Recently an instance said that many other calibers freely available (including the 9x21) have basically the same ballistic capabilities of 9x19, and that criminals still managed to acquire 9x19 through illegal channels, so the only people hit by restriction were lawful gun owners, so the restriction was repealed and now 9x19 is commercially available, opening a whole new market

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
00:35 The video explores the effectiveness of 9mm ammunition and challenges the belief that .45 caliber is the only effective caliber for self-defense.
01:46 The video briefly promotes the mobile game "Raid: Shadow Legends" as a sponsor.
02:42 The video discusses testing different 9mm rounds, including military-grade M882, Hornady Critical Defense, Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST, and Norma MHP.
    07:42 M882 ball ammo showed over-penetration through a ballistic dummy's body.
11:40 Hornady Critical Defense demonstrated good expansion in the ballistic gelatin and stopped in the dummy's body.
15:49 Speer Gold Dot exhibited significant expansion and good performance, penetrating through the dummy's body.
23:03 Federal HST showcased excellent expansion, fragmentation, and lethal results, including sternum and rib fractures.
25:43 Norma MHP showed deflection and fragmentation, did not exit the ballistic dummy.
26:33 The chest shot with Norma MHP resulted in significant expansion and potential exit of the entire round.
27:49 The video concludes that while 9mm ammunition can be effective, the key factor is training for accurate shots.
28:17 A Desert Eagle .50 Action Express with a 300-grain round from Hornady is tested, but it still exits the target.
29:11 The importance of training in using firearms is emphasized, with mentions of training centers like Bear Solutions and Haley Strategic.

The angle is relatively vulnerable, so seeing what carnage would ensue would be an interesting opportunity for scientific discovery. You could even slap some plates on the dummy to capture some of the energy that may be displaced.

Gotta say (as an actual physician assistant in the state of AZ lol), the Hornady didn't get a fair chance. You fired it midline, right at the spine. Not surprised that it didn't go through.... When I first got into firearms I bought the identical gun to what the department that I work for issues and uses. A Gen 3 (at the time) Glock 22. For my self defense ammo I started out using Federal Premium Hydrashok rounds. But then as I started buying more firearms and began doing independent testing I switched to Speer Gold Dot and Federal Premium HST rounds. With the testing that I did from multiple calibers, firearms, shot distances, barrier penetration, and everything else that I could simulate real life scenarios, I found that the Speer Gold Dot and Federal Premium ammo both performed virtually identical in every test, caliber and so on. I also discovered that they had the best results over every other JHP round that I tested. And there were a lot, in multiple firearms, barrel lengths, calibers, test mediums and so on. But then, I started testing Underwood Extreme Defender ammo and I was completely blown away (no pun intended) by the results in every caliber, firearms, barrel length and test medium. That ammo out performed every single other ammo in every test, caliber, barrel length, firearm, distance and test medium. As a result of that, the Underwood Extreme Defender ammo is all that I will use now. I still train with and buy Speer Gold Dot ammo and Federal Premium HST ammo because 2 neighboring agencies to the one that I work at use those specific brands of ammo. The County uses the Speer Gold Dot ammo and the city uses the Federal Premium ammo. There is s large pig farm about an hour to an hour and a half from where I live. The farmer is a good dude. Every now and then he will have a pig get injured or sick and it has to be put down. On a few occasions where the pigs could not be harvested we used them as our test mediums after they were humanely killed. We then x-rayed the results and could see how different rounds effect a body that yields very similar results to that of a human.

My reasoning is that some jackass DA is going to prosecute a well intentioned, otherwise innocent, user who has to shoot someone who is Muslim, Asian, etc basing their accusations on the " holy cross" shape of the bullet. They could accuse the shooter of being some kind of egomanical " born again Crusader" who chose that particular bullet " because it is a symbol of Christian Imperialism" yadda yadda yadda ..
I've been on two juries , one an abuse case, and the other a capital murder charge.. Prosecutors who don't have a solid case and face an otherwise normal, every day working man, defendant will use any dirty trick in the book to jack up the facts in their favor.
In the capital murder case , the judge instructed us to disregard remarks of the prosecuting attorney twice because she was clearly operating in another reality, fabricating new abilities for .38 LWSC.
I've read a lot of Massad Ayoobs books. In many cases he repeatedly cautions people to not use gimmick ammo just for those reasons .
It does look like an interesting round, but I think I'll take my chances using a good performing conventional round.

From what I'm understand the Hornady Critical Defense is an ammo specifically designed for the civilian self defense market. While the other two in this video are law enforcement "barrier blind" ammo, designed to go through light barrier hence the increase in penetrating ability compared to the Hornady. IMO in civilian everyday life Critical Defense is perfectly fine and are something I would carry. It's also within the FBI standard with about 14 inch in gel from what I saw on UA-cam.

  • @jamesbrandon8520

As a nurse in New Orleans, one of the largest centers of gun violence in the world, you would be amazed at what the human body can survive. What ya'll perceive as more powerful, a through and through, usually does less damage. The hollow points that splinter apart generally knick multiple organ systems making them more fatal.

I think what they mean by "more powerful" is in reference to how much energy the round is carrying not so much how much its transfering to the target per se.
Although over penetration definitely wouldn't be the only predictor of how much energy a bullet was carrying.

More powerful in this sense means that military loads tend to be "hotter" than most civilian box ammo. Higher pressures and thus velocity. This is not always the case for all, just this instance, for clarification.

It'd be comical to see what a round that was regularly used to yeet bison does to one of these torso models. I know your usual wheelhouse is modern stuff but it'd make for a fun cowboy themed episode......or maybe just the ending, like you did with the .50 AE here. Chaps or bust.

Regarding the Critical Defense being under-powered, please note that Hornady designed the Critical Defense for use in compact pistols. It would likely be akin to using HST Micro instead of regular HST. The Critical Duty is specifically designed for use in full-size pistols, like the one utilized in the video. Not really an apples to apples comparison since you were using ammo not designed for that use case. I'd love to see how the Critical Duty would stand up next to the Gold Dot and the HST.
