Damned were the first UK punk band to release a single, Album, UK tour, European tour, US tour, Soviet block.....basically they did it all first :) and The Captain is one of the most underrated guitarists I've ever heard....and I've seen him live more than a few times.
Right on! Captain and Brian are both favs of mine. I play guitar myself, punk and folk. I happened into a rare convo with J Mascis (DinoJr) after a show and asked him which Damned git he preferred! He was solid on James, while I gave the nod to Sensible
Guitarist Brian James said he'd had the riff for this song for quite while, but it wasn't until he teamed up with Rat Scabies that it all came together.
If this is the only song by the Damned that you have heard, then you are one lucky bastard! They have wonderful body of work. Check out Neat Neat Neat, Smash It Up (written about the car smash that took their friend and mentor, Marc Bolan, Melody Lee, (The Captain’s guitar riff on) Under the Floor Again, Love Song…soo many more….will make your head explode.
The song that bought punk rock to the notice of the U.K. public in 1976. Quickly followed by Anarchy in the U.K by the Sex Pistols. Music would never be the same.
One of the first punk records I heard in the '70s. The sex pistols were all over the press in the UK because of the supposed outrage and near rioting at their gigs but the singles were banned from the charts - so New Rose, Neat Neat Neat and Stab Your Back by The Damned was my introduction to the fantastically exciting world of punk and new wave (and for me quickly followed by The Clash). Fabulous memories.....!
Yeah… Boredom from the Buzzcocks Spiral Scratch EP…. Has one on the best guitar ‘solos’ ever ( in a very basic two chords punk sort of way). The Saints I’m Stranded too…. Released in Sept ‘76 a month before New Rose…. And before Anarchy in the UK.
Yes! Huge Damned fan. I saw them 5 times, got to meet the singer and guitarist. They are some of the coolest old punx in my opinion. Not evil like Danzig or rich like Idol lol :P #UpthePunx
Brilliant song, i'd try 'Love Song' from the Machine Gun Etiquette album next. Dave Vanian got his name because he was a proto-type goth and dressed like he was Dracula earning the nickname 'The Transylvanian' which was then shortened to Vanian
Punk was not actually built on protest lyrics. The Ramones and CB-GB scene was not political. But the Dead Kennedys and Minutemen were. They have a leftist stance, which I certainly do. And of course the Clash do. I believe in socialism but also anarchism. See CRASS, Poison Girls, Conflict, M.D.C., and I just realized it's time for me to get more hardcore and find more radical lyrics. Also NAPALM DEATH!!!! Lol thanks Nick, this was fun as hell. Stay well and speak Free bro!
This was first punk song to came out 1976 I I when you heard the song you would like it now you listen older music like blue cheer summer time blues and mc 5 kick up the jams
Ever heard anything by Stiff Little Fingers from Belfast? Try Wasted Life. They were formed in 1977 and would fit in well with some of the things you’ve reviewed.
I’d love to hear you venture more into the Jam. Not quite as spiky punk as the Damned, but full of lad energy and more importantly…Paul Weller genius. Going Underground is a great tune to start with. Eton Rifles. Down in the Tubestation at Midnight. All classics. I’m still dying for you to go into 90s shoegaze and britpop with Ride and Primal Scream etc. a whole new world awaits you, mate!
Nice! Can I suggest their song "Alone Again Or"...it a completely different sound compared to New Rose. It has a beautiful Spanish guitar playing and trumpet solo.
If you'd like to react to a couple of the more accessible UK bands from the first wave of punk, I'd recommend "Ever fallen in love" by The Buzzcocks and "Germ free adolescents" or "Identity" by X Ray Spex.
It's my opinion that punk (at CB-GB) was built on freedom, creativity and humor! And in most cases primitive simplicity. Especially the Ramones and Cramps. Then others like Brian James took that freedom (Ramones played London round '76) and sped it up. Ramones already played about as fast as the Damned, but only onstage, not on record. The Damned inspired hardcore (Fast) acts like DK, Misfits, Black Flag etc
Then, from hardcore, evolved further genres. Particularly grindcore. Which I should explore because I love Napalm Death! Hard af screaming for free speech, nonviolence, veganism, abortion rights, indigenous rights, LGBTQ, and especially the EARTH. Talk about political. ND is from Birmingham, UK. They are much less Partisan in the UK. They don't Believe in politicians like the US does! With all these best selling books by former presidents. Also they don't like "king" charles, so maybe the monarchy could end!!!
at last . someone reacts to the greatest of bands .....you need to listen to every thing the damned have done ....still recording music till this day ...

The Damned are still going strong today, with Dave Vanian and Captain Sensible still in the band.
I love the Damned..!!🦹🦹🦹💎 The voice of Dave Vanian , so great..!!!💝
One of the best punk tracks of all time.
Loved watching your facial expressions while you were listening to that song, Nick.
Imagine being 16 years old in 1976 and this came out, then Anarchy and Spiral Scratch. Yep
Spiral Scratch was 1977 .👍
Guitarist Brian James said he'd had the riff for this song for quite while, but it wasn't until he teamed up with Rat Scabies that it all came together.
New Rose - The first ever UK punk rock song, even before the Pistols.
One of the greatest ever guitar riffs, Guns N’ Roses covered this on The Spaghetti Incident album.
Also be sure to check out "Dozen Girls", "Wait For The Blackout", "Lively Arts" and "I Just Can't Be Happy Today" from The Damned

Watching someone listen to my childhood for the first time is weird. The Damned are still playing here in the UK occasionally.
Great to hear this again. For similar energy of the same time go for the Spiral Scratch ep by The Buzzcocks, or I'm Stranded by The Saints.

Hell yeah to The Saints. They just ooze 70s Aussie punk swag. Chris Bailey was an amazing front man. RIP
New Rose always sounds fresh and new, even though I must have heard it hundreds of times in the more than 40 years since I was first introduced to it.
Yes! Huge Damned fan. I saw them 5 times, got to meet the singer and guitarist. They are some of the coolest old punx in my opinion. Not evil like Danzig or rich like Idol lol :P #UpthePunx
Wonderful Nick Lowe production.
Faster rock n roll against Disco and Glam rock of the mid 70's is how is began with this song 😊
Brilliant song, i'd try 'Love Song' from the Machine Gun Etiquette album next. Dave Vanian got his name because he was a proto-type goth and dressed like he was Dracula earning the nickname 'The Transylvanian' which was then shortened to Vanian
Great great band. You did them justice.
Love The Damned I saw them live back in the day great fun, check out “New Rose” another belter
New rose grabbed me by the throat when I first heard it as a 15 kid, went straight out and bought the album and still have it today. 😊
One of my favorites. If you like short, sweet and fast, try Motorhead's Ace of Spades.

God save the Damned!
Some great songs on this album!

See when you smile it’s worth a million words

try x ray specs another uk punk band from around the same time or sham 69, or the skids

The Damned mon enfance!!!
You need to see the video. Really adds to the fun.
The song was recorded on video too, you tube, Rat Scabies is .....just watch.
Nice! Can I suggest their song "Alone Again Or"...it a completely different sound compared to New Rose. It has a beautiful Spanish guitar playing and trumpet solo.
British punk was a different animal to the American bands. It was very much a youth movement and the expression of a new generation.
Yeah, I love American Punk, but I have to say that I do prefer British Punk.
Love love love
If you'd like to react to a couple of the more accessible UK bands from the first wave of punk, I'd recommend "Ever fallen in love" by The Buzzcocks and "Germ free adolescents" or "Identity" by X Ray Spex.
I love identity by x-ray specs
If you love this definitely try The Buzzcocks ‘Ever fallen in love’. Same high energy punk feel.
Great song, but I think I'd rather direct Nick to the main song on their debut EP - Orgasm Addict
@@deanwrigleyuk Orgasm Addict isn't on the Spiral Scratch ep .🤘🤘
Getting the debut signed soon!

Checkout the video for this song. It's so cool the way its filmed.
Brilliant reaction mate
Watch the video when you get a chance
Not a bad effort when you consider it was the first punk single to be released.
You will love smash it up
Supporting Blondie this summer
Any more new order songs? I like what I hear from them from ur vids !
I'm gonna do one next week, they're highly requested!
Beat that.
Certainly the Brit punk band most influenced by the MC-5.
If you like the energy of this you might like X-ray Spex, Oh Bondage Up Yours! Or Penetration, Don't Dictate. All good clean fun.
at last . someone reacts to the greatest of bands .....you need to listen to every thing the damned have done ....still recording music till this day ...
Saw the damned in Wakefield England. Not a fan but they were brilliant
They all had ‘stage names’ because they, hopefully correctly, claiming the dole.
Damned has a new song out Invisible Man
Oh shoot!
Heard it but bodyswerved a 2nd listening
Give "Insane" by The Bears a listen, absolutely up there with anything the better known bands did. IMO
Watch the live video in a London pub the hope and anchor.
The vocals seem to be a lot further up in the mix than I remember.
@Nick try 'Smash it up' much better than any or that Morrissey drivel.
Looking around at the pics on your wall this surely isn't your first listen to this song?
It is! I've heard of them, but never listened to them, no one ever recommended them to me until recently and I never sought them out
@@InsignificantNick Its a killer riff!! May I recommend the German band Can. Start with the song Vitamin C
@@strumbolli yes please and Neu, Kraftwerk, Harmonia
The woke version of this begins "Are they really going out with them?"
Am I meant to believe this is the first time you listened to this? Givvus a break mate. These reaction channels are a joke sometimes.
