These videos make for such a lovely change of pace on the channel. Your journeys on heritage railways are a joy to watch, I’m glad Chloe is enjoying your hobby alongside you as well 😊 Great video mate
Took my children there at Easter. my 8 year old son was quite disappointed when he found the pacers weren't running lol. I usually take my children there about once a year. Along with other local railway sites like Ecclesborne and Barrowhill Roundhouse etc. I would like to say i've had a number of old second hand models, from the model railway there at the start of your video and they are all well looked after and good runners. Also I would like to add on what you touched on at the end, it often isn't that busy and the volunteers down there try hard, Im thankful to you for producing this video as I would like to see this place not only survive but prosper. By the way it is also dog friendly
Hi Sam , so nice to see you out and about promoting heritage and preserved railways ..A pleasing change from being indoors . Glad you and chloe seamed to be enjoying your day out . Keep up the good work and I look forward to your next video . Take care both of you .
That was an awesome trip. Thank you for taking us along for the ride and tours. It’s nice that Chloe has an interest in our hobby. You’re a lucky man because she’s fun and adorable. Good luck with your future happiness.
What a nice place, I could spend *days* measuring rivets in such a collection of so various stuff ;) Nice to see some modern(ish) machines preserved too. And the little narrow gauge steam engine sounds really well balanced. And yes model railroads were a thing back in the late XIXth. If you didn't know, Napoleon III, last Emperor of the French, was a real train nerd. Of course he could build real railways (and he did, he more than quadrupled the size of the national network...), but he also built and owned a live steam model railroad of a scale similar of the ancien Rocket model you've just seen. One loco is preserved at the Compiègne palace. Model railroading is nearly as old as full scale thing!
Hi Sam, I went to Butterly back in 2001 and met the owner of Princess Margaret Rose. He also sold me a copy of his book about the loco. He very kindly sign the copy. Also the Duchess of Sutherland was under going restoration at the time and 6201 Princess Elizabeth was the Loco on duty pulling the trains. My Beagle Puppy who was about 6 months old enjoyed his first Train ride.
I've been hoping for another heritage railway video this summer. It was worth the wait. Very enjoyable. Thanks for your interesting narrative and great videography.
Hi Sam, glad to see that Chloe and you had a great day out on the Midland Railway Butterley. Back in the good old 1980's when we were all young, I travelled around the Midlands and occasionally up to Sheffield by train. At the time a lot of the journeys were on first generation DMU's. (Don't remember exactly which class 😞) They weren't the newest, fastest or quietest but being able to sit on the first row in the driving coach and peer past the driver to get the view of the track out of the front window was amazing...
Great video Sam - it's been a good 15 years since I was last there. Back in the 80s, I remember being on a Santa Special and my dad kept teasing me because I didn't believe in Santa any more, and lo and behold - their Santa forgot to do our coach, so my dad said it was my fault for not believing! Just on a historical note - neither of the stations are original. Butterley was demolished by BR, and the buildings there now came from Whitwell, whilst Swanwick Junction is an entirely new build station (as in, there was no station there previously), with the buildings coming from Syston.
So glad you got to go to see some more real railways. The layouts were amazing as well. Thanks for the inspiration and for sharing your experience. Magic. 🎉
Oh, I've not been to the Midland railway for decades but I grew up round there - my family on my Mum's side are from around there! My mum went to school in Swanick. My Dad's mum is buried very near there too, because it was the geographic middle of distributed family despite her living in the South-East most of her life having moved down from Leicestershire after the war. I'm in Shipley, West Yorkshire now. A triangular station whilst Ambergate's is long gone! Plenty of heritage railways and interesting things to see around here too!
Hi Sam. Another thoroughly enjoyable and informative video. You’ve always been a class act: now with the the delightful Chloe alongside, you’re even classier! Keep up the good work, and thanks for all your hard work in making this hobby accessible to all. Chris
One of my local presrved railways was called the Midland Railway too, but it has less stuff than the one in Butterley. In fact, It hasn't run an excursion between 2019 and November 2022, and still hasn't run one in 2023 after legal troubles over the depot and being sold to new owners. It too had a sand pit, but only during the Thomas events and it wasn't trying to be a beach. I believe that coach at 1:43 is home to some of the model used on TUGS and Thomas and Friends. They're no longer open on a regular basis but have special weekends where they are. 2:10 that class 141 pacer was a 1st generation Pacer, one of only 20 ever built. They were retired in the late 90s and most ended up in Iran. 7:42 that used to have a Thomas face on it and was called Oswald.
I was going to say, I would go just for the pacers, but then you beat me to is, I love em. Also you should have called it a Samcastle, I do need to go to see the HSTs the peaks and the steamers, and they have Duchess of Sutherland there atm having some work. If you want to see narrow gauge next to standard, Bleanau Ffestiniog is brilliant, you have the mainline with occasional railtours and then the Ffestiniog
Narrow gauge tracks are next to standard gauge ones at Blaenau Ffestiniog, so not that unusual. Open coaches are available on the Launceston Steam Railway and the ride is similar. Open Sundays to Thursdays at the moment should you chose to come to Cornwall.
Hi Sam &Chloe that was cool very interesting one of the many museums and railways on my list to visit when I have my first visit to Gt Britain next year from down here in New Zealand
Lovely! The sheer number of heritage railways in the UK is just mind boggling. Google did reveal a number of no less than 150... We can only presume that mass closures in the very past have contributed triggering so many initiatives for the public to experience days gone by... What a sweet day out 🙂
If you can go out of England Sam, you should try to go to the union railway train museum , in Illinois USA. If you can then you will literally go over the moon there.
Thank you so much for doing this video, especially this year of all years as it is exactly 10 years ago that me and my family left the railway. We used to have stuff in the road transport shed, but it wasn't feasible to keep it there anymore for many reasons (including the fact we live in Lincolnshire). I had been told recently that the railway hadn't changed much, and that shows in your video. It was so great to see that Oswald (the blue saddle tank) was still there (even though he's looking a little worse for wear). They used to have someone watching a camera and speaking into a microphone which came out on speakers hidden around Oswald (back when there was a shop there instead of picnic benches and Oswald had a face). And so happy to see the model railway at Swanick have got their main railway back (after it was a casualty in a fire some years ago before we left). There was even a familiar face in the form of the guard on the narrow gauge railway (they used to let me come for rides as a kid, so I sat with the guard, which often ended up being the guy you had on your trip). A bit of extra history for you, at the end of the narrow gauge line at the bottom of the valley (hidden by bushes and suchlike), there is a tunnel mouth. That is the entrance to the Butterley canal tunnel (the main canal route through that area in its day). The tunnel unfortunately became impossible to maintain and was abandoned, it has been explored a couple of times with the last person getting right up to where the tunnel has now collapsed. The tunnel was such a major connection in its time that there was actually a small wharf inside the tunnel, which is possibly still there, but it is now probably too dangerous to try going down there to find out. Thank you so much Sam and Chloe for taking me down memory lane.
I know Midland Railway well I used to go a lot as a child with my mum's train mad Uncle in the 1980s. Unfortunately not so long ago some vandals got into the site and then smashed out coach windows along with damage to the station buildings but the most cruel part was memorial benches were smashed in half these were for people who either have given money to the railway or at some point volunteered their time to help out. This is the second time this has happened the second attack was in the ' Derbyshire Times ' early this year the other first attack was in 2022. Hopefully this video will encourage people to visit otherwise it will close.
Great to see you and chloe out of the attic! Interesting place with lots to see but I always feel sad seeing so many unrestored locos and rolling stock. But of course volunteers can only do do much. Let's hope more support them after seeing your video.
10 years ago I had a loco driving experience day on a jinty Fowler 3F in S&DJR colours . Had a fantastic day driving and firing and the staff really looked after us .

hey i live next to here! i spent my childhood walking around swanwick junction as it is walking distance to my family home. Being so close to the trains each weekend is what got me into liking trains in the first place. The GVLR is wonderful
Good video, enjoyed the journey but sadly not enough people there as you pointed out. Did think the Princess Royal reveal was going to be another model so a nice surprise to see the real thing, I have been on the footplate myself as this particular class is one of my favourite steam locos Again a shame that there is so much ex-rolling stock in poor condition but on the upside at least we can see them in preservation Thanks for sharing
His merch " I'm not a train enthusiast I'm a model train enthusiast" Him, " Hello everybody welcome to the Midland railway" 😂 Sometimes its best to get both XD. All jokes aside sam, this channel is one of the only reasons I watch youtube so keep the good work up kind regards Lilbro28 😂👍
By Eck that takes me back. I visited the Midland railway a couple of times when it started off (quite small). Living in Codnor it was a quick treck down the coach road (before Sainsbuys & police HQ). When younger I remember Toton sheds with around 50 steam locos waiting to be scrapped. Aahh memories 😃. Great video Sam & Chloe
"By Eck..!!" I haven't heard that term in a While..! Memories of 'Up North' come Flooding back..! Its all ''She'll be Right'', ''Bonza'' and without fail, ''Mmaatte'' ( as in Mate..!) The station building at Swanwick Jn looks like it could have been an old station because it was previously at Syston, Leicestershire and was taken down and rebuilt at the MRC.
Hi,I’m a bit late here but,Very well put together, next time you should visit for there Victorian train weekend which they have old Victorian coaches and a steamer running, usually twice a year in April or august.
This is aboutn 20 minutes away from me. Its a shame its not what it was as I was growing up. Oswald in a bad way, the shop gone (That used to be next to Oswald). I do think licensing for DOWT was kinda the start as many places couldn't afford the prices Mattel wanted. And then covid and cost of living haven't helped. That lake was always my favourite part. I do think the line is a little too short Imo. Swanwick Station was actually built a few years ago before the licensing issues got bad.
It is good that you are getting out and about instead of being cooped up in that loft! Good camera work and choice of shots made this an entertaining if somewhat surreal video. The conspicuous lack of passengers that you mention adds to the pathos of the scene with so many defunct locos and items of rolling stock! Thanks for uploading.
The chassis looks like a Badger commercial railway vehicle, which is designed to be used with a small pickup bod, normally in yellow, usually using a Volkswagen 1.6 diesel engine.
Very nice. Once upon a train ride, along the Severn Valley Railway, Sam and Chloe were enjoying the shrill whistle and sharp bark of Erlestoke Manor, who was hauling an eight-coach train. Sam stuck his head out of the front window, and got speckled with soot. Chloe laughed. "What's so funny?" asked Sam. He looked in the compartment mirror, and saw the answer. He was almost as black as the Ace of Spades. This wasn't all. Erlestoke Manor stopped at Hampton Loade Station, to let boyfriend and girlfriend off. Sam was puzzled until.... "I've got a present for you," said Chloe smiling. "Climb up on the footplate." Sam did as he was bidden, with Chloe in tow. Erlestoke Manor's Driver and Fireman stood back. Sam waited for the Guard's whistle. Chloe watched intently for the green flag. The signal to start was given. "Right away, Sam," uttered the young lady. Sam pulled the regulator open slowly. Erlestoke Manor slipped briefly on the damp rails. The young man closed the regulator and then opened it up once more. This was something he could never refuse the offer of doing. Chloe was Firewoman, she got more dirty than Sam. No time to complain, the two were having the time of their lives. The session ended at Kidderminster Town Station. Some dust got up Chloe and Sam's noses. "AATCHOO!" they sneezed together. They laughed it off and climbed down from the cab. The platform was near enough deserted. Sam did something he'd not yet thought about. He showed Chloe an open jewellery box, with a diamond ring inside. "Chloe," he asked shyly, "will you marry me?" "Yes, I will," answered Chloe, kissing him on the lips. "I thought you'd never ask." Happy days.
Hi Sam It's Oliver i hope your Well.. i was Wondering if you be up for Doing a Video Together at the Mid Hants Railway?? if not then i fully Understand wish you all the best and have a good One :)
heritage railways, when you get your scale models to 1:1, honestly these yours are pretty intriguing. Locally preserved trains are but a handfull, probably because my country was not much into it untill post one of the world wars and even than there were not any engines like A3 or something. i can not name you a single local loco by name and can only recognize a vague shape of one from err 80s? 70s? I stand more chance of telling you about light railway aka trams. So to see country that dose its past tracked travel justice is always nice insight.
haha absolutely right! Really glad you like these videos - they are a lot of fun to make! Such a shame you don't have them where you are :( Thanks for watching, Sam :)

14:49 And here, in it's natural habitat, we have a Class 08
Every good preservation railway needs at least one
Great to see Cloe again! She has such a lovely smile!
She certainly does! I'll be sure to tell her!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)

"I rest my case" that was one of the funniest things I've heard for a long time 😂😂😂
If you ever get chance you really should try the Statfold Barn Railway as it has a huge collection of narrow gauge locos
I say this as a compliment. When you were knocking over the sand castles. You looked like Mr. Bean. Good show.

Seeing real life railways are good to base a model railway on.
If you can go out of England Sam, you should try to go to the union railway train museum , in Illinois USA. If you can then you will literally go over the moon there.
Brilliant video. Great to see you both enjoying yourselves!😊
It would be so cool for you two to make a trip to America and ride some trains there

Lovely film you both! Never been so great to be showed around is great! Thank you 👍
Heyyyy my friend how are u doing. A day with chole that must of been fun. Hope u guys had fun. Keep being awesome
Great to see you and chloe out of the attic! Interesting place with lots to see but I always feel sad seeing so many unrestored locos and rolling stock. But of course volunteers can only do do much. Let's hope more support them after seeing your video.
Good view from the signal box and the peak class diesel locomotives
We now need a Hyce and Sams Trains video. For real it would awesome to see Mark and Sam together in one video.
Add in LMM (Lawrie's Mechanical Marvels), too. Lots of heritage stuff he's got.
Being with Sam it’s not surprising Chloe is a railway aficionado, I’d guess sprung buffers are desirable also. Excellent filming.
10 years ago I had a loco driving experience day on a jinty Fowler 3F in S&DJR colours . Had a fantastic day driving and firing and the staff really looked after us .
Hi Sam. That’s a good video and a good trip too. Thanks for sharing mate. Cheers Josh
Super video sam! I would've love to visit there, that is if I could go to England.
Cool video, I like it. Cheers from Germany.👍
U can build one of those slammin!! That would be incredible starting a series on a huge layout!!!do it do it Sammy!!!
I highly Recommend Bressingham Steam and Gardens, too! It’s between Norwich and Ipswich!
Chloe! I’m totally with you. How the hell do you manage the football stadium? It terrifies me - a hands and knees job climbing the stairs! 😂
You ought to visit the Chesterfield & District Model Engineering Society in Hady, on a public event day. Here you will see 7.25” & 5” gauge tracks ground level track, and 2.5”, 3.5” & 5” gauge tracks on the raised level.
What a great day trip. Thanks for sharing!
An excellent video, enjoyed watching it very much… thank you both..
Really good view of those HSTs there Sam, you'll have to go when the 125group are having a running day because it's definitely worth it!
That would be awesome for sure!! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
glad you enjoyed it. we did last year too.
hey i live next to here! i spent my childhood walking around swanwick junction as it is walking distance to my family home. Being so close to the trains each weekend is what got me into liking trains in the first place. The GVLR is wonderful
Ahh fantastic - you're so lucky to have lived so close by!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
So what do you know about the one that got away ?????
So sam with all your new knowledge on rivets , what do you know about kilroy.??????
Thanks Sam and Chloe, that was a fantastic video. I’m from Chicago and it’s nice to see the railway action where you are!!! ❤️
Thank you so much Robert - lovely to hear you enjoyed it!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
What a wonderful day out and also a very enjoyable video!
1:38 definetly seen that loco on eBay before, seller had a handful of them and couldn't shift them but they were excellently weathered
Good video, enjoyed the journey but sadly not enough people there as you pointed out. Did think the Princess Royal reveal was going to be another model so a nice surprise to see the real thing, I have been on the footplate myself as this particular class is one of my favourite steam locos
Again a shame that there is so much ex-rolling stock in poor condition but on the upside at least we can see them in preservation

Thank you so much for this video 😊
16:09 I think Sir William Stanier is possessed: "YOU have given a model of a creation of mine bad reviews for the last time...!"

I love it when you film these vids Sam
Thank you so much!! :D

Swanwick Station was actually built a few years ago before the licensing issues got bad.
We enjoy going there. On the narrow gauge, the guard let our boy wave the green flag and then sit in the loco. It's a good day out
Love your videos
Thank you so much Alex :D
It is good that you are getting out and about instead of being cooped up in that loft! Good camera work and choice of shots made this an entertaining if somewhat surreal video. The conspicuous lack of passengers that you mention adds to the pathos of the scene with so many defunct locos and items of rolling stock! Thanks for uploading.
6:44 Narrow gauge or not, how does that wafer-thin metal at the bottom make itself useful in the big bad world ?
The chassis looks like a Badger commercial railway vehicle, which is designed to be used with a small pickup bod, normally in yellow, usually using a Volkswagen 1.6 diesel engine.
5:32 HST preserved yea 😃👍
Oh wow this video is great!!
It’s so funny, keep it up!
haha thank you so much! :D
Its like a mini stainz loco. 😊
Is Chloe also big on cows in real life? If so for the wedding you should prepare a living Bullman for her at a heritage railway with a lowmac.
Yes she is - she likes them a lot! And that's an excellent idea, haha!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam should 3D print a small Sir William Stanley for a scale office window.
"Chloe," he asked shyly, "will you marry me?"
"Yes, I will," answered Chloe, kissing him on the lips. "I thought you'd never ask." Happy days.
haha excellent Kelly - a very enjoyable read as always, thank you!

@@SamsTrains you're welcome 😊 buddy 😊
Did you and Chloe have a good time☺☺😊👍
Yes we did thank you! :D
heritage railways, when you get your scale models to 1:1,
honestly these yours are pretty intriguing.
Such a shame you don't have them where you are :(
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
