This was really neat. I’d love to hear it in person. As an armchair engineer and audiophile, I have one big suggestion for you - make all of the speakers at head level. If you intend to watch all your films whilst standing, then this sound system will probably be great for you. However, if you intend to sit, then the sound waves will literally go over your head.
@ This is true; however, considering the speakers’ top-mounted receivers, I anticipate that angling them might disrupt light transmission. Angling the center channel does seem much more feasible. All one would have to do is shift the ceiling-mounted mirrors slightly.
That's like the extreme version of using those IR LEDs directly connected to sound sources and headphones, but so well made that it's not just practical, but up to the highest HiFi standards. Fantastic job Matt, once again you've smashed the expectations!

What an awesome project! As always :) Ideas for V2 upgrades: a) The DSP used can actualy directly interface S/PDIF signals! No need for the cheapo TOSLINK decoder on every satellit speaker! b) TCP115 drivers can be used in full range mode without issue. No reason to have separate compartments for low and mid range.
Yes the driver "can" well be used for full range, but it only has 4mm of xmax. With increased excursion comes increased distortion to the mid frequencies, which might be a problem if you want to listen to movie bass loud.
This is such an innovative approach to optical digital audio! Turning it into a wireless laser Dolby system using DACs per speaker is genius. You’ve outdone yourself once again. This solves one of my issues by using DACs that support optical inputs. Huge props to you, and thanks for this solution! ❤

I think using lasers with a wavelenght outside of what the human eye is capable of seeing would be even more amazing, especially in the dark. Altought pointing them in the right direction could be finnicky
Your phone camera should be able to see them if they're a constant laser like the ones shown in the video as opposed to an infrared LED (which your phone camera can also see)
Because of the transmission line stands, the speakers do seem to be higher than optimal for best listening. The horizontal interference pattern you avoided by mounting the tweeter on top of the center channel didn't go away, it just became a vertical pattern instead, and the same vertical pattern exists with the other 4 speakers affecting the two woofers. Since they are all considerably above ear height, different people may experience different interference patterns based on their height rather than how far off center the are sat. Because the woofers are mainly for the lower frequencies, it may not be as much of a problem as the wavelengths are so long at that point, but it's still something to think about if you were to revisit this idea someday.
I thought the same thing. What’s also bad is the long transmission line. Phase alignment is probably very difficult with that. Additionally, the setup doesn’t have Dolby Digital or DTS:X.
This is such a cool idea! I love the idea of lasers beaming lossless, zero latency data around your house, it's so sci-fi. Seems to me like there are a lot of cool future possibilities for high bandwidth optical data transmission. It's how satellite constellations communicate with each other across hundreds of miles in space after all. My one concern would be with vibrations from the speakers, or on the ceiling where the mirrors are mounted. Probably doesn't take much to jerk the beam out of alignment and lose signal.

A couple of tips. The production of standing waves and places where your sub will have much less power (audibility) is a function of placement and room shape. You might get lucky just dumping it behind the TV and getting a decent response at your viewing position, but it's not very likely. The usual approach is to put the sub at your viewing position, then crawl around the room finding places where it's loudest. Then place it there. But. The biggest improvement i ever made to my visceral enjoyment of movies, was the addition of simple 'butt kicker'. A small speaker attached directly to the frame of the furniture, so you really feel those low frequencies. Try it. It's an easy win
My friend, with love from Turkey. First of all, I must say that the project is one of the ideas that I have been thinking about for years, how nice it would be. If you have the idea of moving your project forward, I have a few recommendations. I am aware that you cannot give up on 2-meter pipes to get the bass frequency you want. However, the speakers are much higher than the listening level in this way. My recommendation is to turn the speakers upside down, hang them from the ceiling, place the mirrors at the entrance of the pipes and make a design that will allow the light to go directly to the speaker through the glass pipe. Even if you match the width of the mirrors and receivers with the pipes, and even if you have the opportunity to use a laser that can give different colors at different sound Hz, you can have a full sound and visual experience.

That is insane! My friend has an old surround sound system and we wondered what this laser port is used for, but i would never imagine to use it as a wireless 5.1 sound system!
There are a few channels on youtube I follow whose new videos I give a like before even watching them. This is one of those channels, I haven't started watching yet but I know the video is going to be fantastic as always.
This is the best video on the channel, even better than the PS5 portable or the artificial sunlight, the design of this series of speakers it’s so amazing and the way they work using the optical audio port is so clever, I’m seriously thinking about making couple of them. I really liked the idea of using the acoustic chamber (labyrinth) as base without curving it, despite they’re little bit taller than the ears height but it’s fine, you can build also a couple acoustic diffusers and resonators to improve even more the sound quality, and if the red lasers annoys somebody you can use IR lasers too, same result and non visible by human eyes.
I had a teacher who introduced the concept to us using a laser he rigged to a headphone jack and a small solar cell connected to a speaker. He played some Disturbed through it. It sounded terrible, but it was so cool.
This laser transmission must also work for ADAT ! 8 channels of uncompressed audio in one laser beam .. In a studio, that could be transmitted through the glass of an isolation booth.
They're a bit tall tho, I'm thinking you could shorten them and put another tube in one of the other tubes, it will give you the frequency to you require. Also because its clear perspex tubes you could make it ambient ability, by using a multi-coloured LED in the tube to represent the colors on the side of the screen bouncing off the back wall. I would have thought that would work quite well. Yeah they look good nice concept
Amazing as always. Only I would need for the speakers to be mounted on a wall so as they never move for two reasons. 1. I just know my robot vacuum is going to smash into it constantly knocking it out of alignment and 2. I would put very good odds on it that it would take less than a minute before my dog runs into them, again knocking them out of alignment.
It's a very cool setup, especially the composite speaker enclosures. The tweeters are way too high though! The need to be at ear level. The clear transmission line/stands for the speakers is an excellent idea. Can they be folded in half again to bring down the heights of the speakers?

I have an old Hilti laser measure that, with a large lens on the receiver, manages to measure distances to 200m bouncing off a building in the distance. It runs off 2 x AA batteries, 3V ! So, with a little look into the laser used (Hilti PD-20 - I'm sure there are other brands with similar ranges) this should also be able to work over similar distances at the same voltage .
The problem with BT is the latency. Optical Audio is basically instant or low latency. The problem I have with BT Audio when watching video is high latency. For just listening to just music it's fine.
This is amazing! I'm curious if there is a way to split the subwoofer so you can have a speaker coming from each side vs one side. Or if that's even necessary... 😅
Amazing as always! One thought: maybe include some comments about how this setup might differ for people that have a dedicated home theatre AV receiver. Many people probably do so some of the components in your setup might not be needed.

You could use a convex lens to widen the laser side as well if the receiver is sensitive enough.
