In this Catan Universe gameplay, there are some crazy trades that go down. I also make several minor mistakes which come close to costing me the game. Small mistakes are what separates good Catan players from great ones, so I still have a lot to improve on.
This game teaches 3 important lessons about Catan. I hope you learned something!
1) Port Strategies are inefficient
2) No Wheat = Defeat
3) Don't race unnecessarily

Man, Orange was toxic and Green was very unsporting in accepting the help. What a pair, those two. Red didn`t play too well, but at least they played respectfully and fairly.
I had someone target me because I took the highest producing spots left as 4th position because it covered all 5 resources. He retaliated by placing the knight on my wood and literally changing his road direction to build 5 roads over to steal a port that I wasn't even going for, making the game a 1v1 for the other players
wow, that orange player is such a tool for giving all his cards to green. And the green player is also kinda lame for accepting it. How is the game still fun if people decide to ruin it like that?
I mean red and orange had no hope this game, and green still barely kept up with the help
@@gabemerritt3139 That doesn't excuse anyone from being a bad sport
While unfortunate, I think it's a good model of what not to do in competitive play.
DylLighted - Catan had smth similar in a competition. I would have won a game but the guy coming last made me go 2nd (through helping the otherwise 2nd place, and 2nd givies half the points) so I wouldnt overtake him on the overall ladder.
Anyone playing Kingmaker immediately takes the fun out of it.
Well played without loosing your cool. You should block and report these cheats. Game is no fun when such things happen but full marks to you man.
Thanks! I try to enjoy Catan as much as possible as in the very end it's simply a game. I'd like to think of collusion as another typical Catan game except for it is extra hard mode :).
@@DyLightedCatan collusion, or colusión in spanish, new word learnt ^^
Throwing the game in ranked is real BM...
Really level headed playing despite the negative attitude of Orange and the collusion with green. Sometimes its hard not to go on tilt when players act like that. Thanks for helping us all learn to get better!
Thank you for watching! I appreciate it!
Thanks for making these and for thinking out loud, so to speak. Very insightful and helpful in honing strategy. Both you and neonate's vids are definitely worth watching.
Thank you! This really motivates me to work harder! I'm quite the fan of neonate, so it really means a lot. I'm going to try to start an uploading schedule on the weekend. Look forward to a video soon!
Thanks for uploading this ! Been a fan of Neonate for a long time and i have been searching to find more videos for Catan gameplay. Glad i found you ! Please upload more of these !
Thank you! I really will try my best!
Someone asked Neonate "How do you decide whom to attack while playing?" and his reply was that we should see who whom we don't like and attack them. Whoever attacked us. Tit for tat. I thought that it was too lame.
The general video, gameplay and commentary quality is very good man! It is a shame it is such a niche game, you deserve a lot more followers!
Nathan dep Thank you! I really means a lot. One goal of this channel is to make Catan less of a “niche” game and more popular!
I've watched a bunch of your videos (old and new) and they always provide fundamental lessons. Thanks for putting in the hard work so we can learn how to improve, and therefore enjoy the meta game of settlers! Also, they were so salty in the chat lol. Beating green even though he was being spoon fed by orange must have been so cathartic. Well done not to engage with bitterness, like they did. ! Now I'm off to a game of catan!
Thanks! Good luck man!
When red stole from orange when he blocked your wheat, he was really stealing from green...
Good point actually.
Hey man, looking foward to get better at the game. I d love to see some guides to intermediate or advanced strats.
Lorenzo Espetxe hahaha of course. Just watch the rest of my videos lol.
Getting all the basics down is important.
Was this sped up or anything? I don't get why people are complaining about the game speed. I can take 20 minutes to contemplate a single road 😂
yeah he edits all waits out
I do edit out all the wait time! My philosophy is if I can spend 10 hours editing out a minute of wait time for 1000 people, then it's worth it!
DylLighted - Catan that explains how everyone is super fast at picking their settlements. From what ive learned where you place your first two settlements + roads is like 50% of the game
Orange makes a dumb move and gets cut off by purple
The 5 year old (orange) starts throwing a hissy fit
Orange keeps giving up all his cards to green
Green keeps accepting those trades
Orange starts calling Purple names for trying to play the game like its meant to be
Purple still mops the floor with Orange + Green
I can imagine Joec6108 (orange) crying for hours after the utter humiliation lol. He failed even being a sidekick!
I wanna start playing on this platform just for the hopes of running into this utter tool (orange) and laughing at him a bit.
Honestly laughing at the guy/making fun of him isn't even worth the time. He's got a loser mentality and that's punishment enough. I feel sorry for Orange.
Man orange really was tilted that chat log was a dream to read
My man beat this dude even though 6 was rolled a Jillian times AND one of the players gave up and helped other dude! Dyl is the mad champ.🏆
@DylLighted wouldnt it have been better at 11:30 for trade for a brick with the 3 ores and build a settlement to the 6-11-12 instead of dev.card?
You sound like Neonate in this one. Your speaking style has become more unique over time
Thank you! Originally I was super inspired by him, but now have developed my own videos and ideas. Thanks for watching my videos :)
Great video! Lmao orange was so triggered!
ii_Rein Thanks for the compliment. I wish orange had a better attitude about the game also.
Green is like a 2 point bot accepting 3 for 1 trades
Basically it was 2v1v1
can't believe how well you handled having a toxic player at the table and just proceeded calmly with your eye on your own win cons
Hey DiYlighted! I fell in love with this game today, after watching your videos. You do a great job on them. I've bought the game and I'm playing non-stop. I'm wondering why you are holding on to 3 knight cards? I get that you want some defense against the robber, but you need all 3? Cause if you used one, it's a free resource?
Good point! I have a lot of critical spots that need defending and there wasn't always a time where I needed one particular resource. I would rather have a knight for defense compared to getting a random card from someone. Thanks for asking!
Thank you for these videos - I've been smashing my roommates in Catan ever since I found this channel.
What disappointing sportsmanship from orange and green. So good to see you win with a great play!
At 11:31 why did you go for the development card instead of building a settlement on 6-11-12?
Did green play the weird road to cut off orange's ability to get longest road?
Green was about to win in the end but Dy made some brilliant moves to sneak up the win.
Hey, been loving watching your videos, great job! Agreed, orange with the super lame play this game. Curious about why you chose to block the shared wood 9 several times as opposed to Green's wood 6 later in the game?
I'm so glad I found these videos, as they have a lot of very useful information! I agree with most of your commentary, but here are a few things I disagree with.
Settlement placement:
I actually think orange placed its first road correctly. However, its second settlement should go on the 6-3-11 with 11 wood, aiming for the 4 ore+11 wood as its third settlement. Then it can expand toward the left side of the board using its solid clay/wood numbers.
Green, on the other hand, should aim both its roads toward the ports. It absolutely needs the wood port so it can go for its best strategy, which is spamming dev cards for wheat+sheep+2 wood. 4-card development cards are not very inefficient, and green has great numbers on all of those resources, so it would have excellent chances to win the game without any collusion.
Right after you settle on the 3-1 port, you trade 3 ore for 1 wheat and buy a third knight. You should instead trade 6 ore for 1 wheat + 1 clay and build another settlement on the 6-11-12. You'll have plenty of time to get the third knight for largest army later.
Toward the end of the game, you suggest that you should have offered a trade to green that would let you win the game. This is why I won't trade with players who have 8pts or more unless it lets me win the game. Green might have been thinking that way, so this wasn't necessarily a missed opportunity. Good job spotting the win that you did have; I might've missed it since I was still thinking about cities and longest road.
Good thoughts! Thanks for analyzing my gameplay. Here are some of my thoughts.
About Orange's road, I still think a safer play would to place your road towards the 3:1 port. The reasoning behind this is because their first spot doesn't have wheat, and more wood is always pretty good to fit the 1:1 wood/brick ratio. The 7 production points, a 3:1 port, and getting more wheat is a really great deal. On the other hand, pointing the road inwards can only secure a race for a mediocre 4/5/11 with more brick/sheep that is unnecessary. In addition, Orange's first placement as 3rd position means that they still have to wait for 4th position to place. This means there is still uncertainty where they will place. The safer option that yields a greater benefit to me is the 9/10.
I like the thoughts with Orange taking the 6/3/11. However, the weakness is low wheat. If you watched my other videos, you should understand the importance of obtaining an adequate wheat source. If I were to place there, my first priorities would be to build on the 10/9 3:1 port for more wheat, and then build towards the 4ore/11 brick port. Remember, "no wheat = defeat." "No ore? You're done for. (This rule is a bit more flexible)"
About green, yea I thought his road placement was terrible. I think he could've won the game easily if he didn't have such a rocky start.
At 11:10, the reason why I bought a development card was because I wanted to invest my resources into something that doesn't give me an immediate victory point. This gives me a much better low profile rather than getting 2 points in a single turn which sort of lets everyone know I'm starting to ramp up. I find with lower level players, it's a lot more about sneaking around. I thought these players weren't super high quality. For strong players, this doesn't apply as much as they can tell pretty quickly you're planning next.
About the trade I missed, perhaps the right move would've been to not move the robber and then try do the trade so I'm at 6 points which makes me look like a nonthreat. Perhaps you're right with green not taking my deal, but green was thirsty for ore to city up so I think trying to offer it couldn't have hurt.
@@DyLightedCatan Thanks for your response. I just watched the rest of your videos--they are very good, and I'm looking forward to seeing more!
I think it's really close between the 2 possible road placements for orange. I actually thought heading towards the middle would be safer, because green might try to cut off my road toward the port, or someone might decide to place their second settlement on top of the 9-10 port. I also want to head toward the middle since I am going for longest road, so I need lots of room to expand. It's true it comes with low wheat numbers but I have the clay port and tons of sheep so in the worst case I could trade 4-for-1 sheep for wheat.
Maybe I should try to make it less obvious when I am winning. I usually just assume that my opponents will rob from me no matter what (they often do) and plan accordingly.
@@Mousepotato8 If green is smart, then they wouldn't cut you off with the free road from placing 2nd on the 6/9/2. Whenever you play a port strategy, your first priority is to get to a port no matter what. Any other goal is delaying your game and stalling your ability to ramp up. With that said, there are bad players so I think the fear of getting cut off is valid. Doing 4:1 sheep for wheat is extremely inefficient. I believe it would be very hard to win like that.
About heading towards the center for longest road, that does make sense. I am more of a conservative player so I dislike doing that, but should probably consider options like that more.
Going to do my best to upload a video this weekend. Hope you enjoy!
7:03 "...everyone's wood is blocked." LMAO. I'm so mature xD
Very interesting vid, I hope you do others soon
I just posted one!
You could buy a settlement on 11:35
You could buy a settlement but in general it’s not a good idea to port your ore away.
I'm a new player to the game, so what is a port strategy? Why is it inefficient?
@Some noob 646 great question. A ‘port strategy’ is where you concentrate on a single resource (example: sheep) and you build your second settlement near the sheep port so you can 2:1 (sheep) for any resource you want. In theory, this should make you ‘flexible’ as you can make any resource you want for 2 (sheep). The issue with this strategy is that you need 2 sheep for any resource. This makes it so you need twice the amount of production just to catch up because you are doing a 2:1 every time compared to someone who diversifies their resources so they don’t need a port as badly.
You also should have been putting the robber on greens 6 not the 9. 15 points on the 6, orange is out which means 12 points on the 9 and red isn’t = to green so more like 10 points. 15 is more than 10. You made the 9 mistake twice.
I have played Catan only a few times and I found no strategic depth in it. I'm thinking about giving it a second chance? Is it a fair game or the chances are decided on turn 1?
Give it a second chance! Most people don’t see the strategic depth because they don’t search hard enough, but this game has a lot higher of a skill ceiling than most people think. The game is 100% not decided on turn one. Subscribe to my channel and learn!
@@DyLightedCatan Absolutley agree with DyLighted.
Catan Is a Strategy AND a Luck game of course.
Not only Strategy.
Not Luck.
The two things can exist togheter.
That'swhat peapole don't undestand.
I am enjoying your videos. One question on this game was your placing the robber on the 9. As red and yellow were both dead in the water, would it be better placed on the 6 wood which is more useful to green than the 9.
Yea that was a mistake. I just thought hitting all 3 people was better than hitting 1, but the other 2 players were "dead" players. So I agree with you that later in the game I should've been placing the robber on the 6 wood instead of the 9 wood.
Since green was the biggest competitor, why block his 9 wood instead of blocking his 6 wood??? The 6 is rolled more often and generating 3 wood versus only 2 wood generated on the 9.
Joe Camerer That’s a good point, but I felt like the other players still could come back somehow and wanted to shut down 3 players instead of 1 and block 16 points of production instead of 15. I wouldn’t fault you for blocking the 6 wood.
I enjoyed this thank you!
I can’t believe you only have 800 subs 😂 You’re so good at this game please teach me I’m so bad 😬
RNN Network Aw thank you! Just watch the rest of my videos to learn more!
I was playing, put my starting settlements on a 8,4,11 on a ore brick wheat, and a 4,5,9 on a sheep brick wheat, and then proceeded to have everyone roll anything except for 9,8,5,4, and 11’s for a solid 5 rotations
jordan haas do you mean 11 when you say one?
Joe Maney yea
it do be like that sometimes
Holy shit you sound like a young Christopher walken the way to talk lol
I guess that’s a good thing? Thanks!
Thank you for the video, very good lessons!
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you got something out of it!
I think it's a pretty big mistake to block the 9 wood twice there towards the end of the game. Orange is clearly not even trying to win, so by blocking the 9 you're essentially saying that you think red could be a threat, which I think is a stretch given how close you were to winning. At this point it's clearly a two horse race between you and green, so blocking his 6 wood (which gives him a wood plus any other resource every time it's rolled) is the smarter play. I found it funny that both times you chose not to block it, a 6 was immediately rolled :)
tbh though I think the game was basically over when you went first on this board. The other players made a big mistake not trying to lock you out of additional wheat/sheep for your second settlement.
When I play with friends the rule we always that you can’t give away your resources to anyone but last place. Thought that was just a rule but ig its a house rule.
It’s a house rule. You can trade freely.
shouldn't you have bought a new settlement @ 11:23?
Max Hoffmeyer Great point. Mistake on my end. There’s no reason to buy a development card when I have 2 knights already.
Great video! Learned a lot.
Erik Ortega I’m glad you did! Now go beat your friends at home with what you’ve learned!
game of skill!
Diversity of numbers is not more important then actual numbers if all else is equal
I agree with this statement to a certain extent. There are definitely a lot of exceptions to these 2 differing philosophies. This was one of my old videos and my viewpoint has changed quite a bit.
@@DyLightedCatan One of the main variables is the current chance of winning (and the accuracy of your estimation of it). If all things are equal or worse, you need to increase your probability and hope for a little luck. If you are really behind, the lack of diversity is a bonus because it represents a better chance of winning than if you can select diverse numbers. But that lack of diversity shouldn't probably be attained at the expense of better odds to draw cards.
To what ends do you think this stragety translates to cities and knights? As in the three tips you gave at the end
1) Ports are still good! In fact I believe having a port is almost a requirement to win. However, that doesn't mean to sacrifice other potential spots just to go all in on a port (5 tiles of sheep with a sheep port). It's been mathematically proven this is inefficient (and it just sort of makes sense if you think about it)
2) You can't do a Cities and Knights strategy without wheat. Don't even try. In fact it's extremely difficult to win without wheat, hence the saying "No wheat = defeat".
3) Don't race unnecessarily. This one is probably the biggest one. As the cities and knight player, you can't waste a single road. Every road is super valuable. You build your settlements not usually for production, but rather for a port/VP's. To ensure not getting cut off, point towards the coast/desert to guarantee a 3rd settlement. Absolutely never commit to a race, unless you can win it before it even started. (In this case, I had a road building but if I didn't I wouldn't even have tried to go for the race.)
*Edit: oops. I thought you mean playing a cities and knights game in the base game. Not the expansion.
You had 9 points, and a victory point card lmao.
You can’t “play” victory point cards. They are already included inside the point score. Feel free to go back and count the points.
@@DyLightedCatan Oh, my mistake. I'm still learning game, thank you. And great videos, thank you for sharing.
what do you mean killer 13 points? When you're referring to the beginning placement?
The numbers have little dots on them, so an 8 has 5 dots or points, an 11 has 2 points, etcetera. Numbers with more points get rolled more often, so having a village with 13 adjacent points will get you tons of resources.
To be slightly more clear than the other comment, the points refer to the probability of that number being rolled. An 8 has 5 points, and that means it has a 5 in 36 chance of being rolled. A 9 has 4/36, 10 is 3/36, etc. A 7 is 6/36. In Catan with normal rules, a 13 point total placement is the highest you can get.
Should I play on catanuniverse or colonist.io?
Why not try to trade for wheat to get a city? At 6:20
Could you play some seafarers?
I don't think that rewind was necessary at all. You were only showing 7 points before you built the city but I think most decent players would have been too wary of your DC being a VP and you also having 12 cards. There was not a trade I would have made with you at that point in the game. My friends usually cut off trading at 8 points.
if you go for ore, wheat, sheep strategy, you literally focus ONLY on those 3 resources and mystery cards?
It’s puts a heavy emphasis on those 3 resources, but it doesn’t hurt to get wood or brick also. Usually the best combo is OWS with a tad bit of wood or brick
@@DyLightedCatan whenever i want to play OWS, i can't get both brick and wood as well, because opponents take those spots, i might get like one of those only, should i play OWS if i have ONLY those 3 resources?
@@vladimirnikolic599 Yea sometimes it’s fine to just do pure ows as long as you have enough production
@@DyLightedCatan thanks man! you are the best
can you play the game on computer as well?
"Speed the fuck up" 🤣🤣
8 5 10 is way better for second pick in my opinion
Nice video
What do you mean when you say a certain spot is 12 points?
Victor Masot odds of that settlement getting a resource. Looking under the number you can see how many ‘points’ each number is worth
@@FlatlandsSurvivor Ahhhh ok thanks!
The green has drunk his brain with those roads placement.
Horrible
I agree the roads could have improved a bit!
@@DyLightedCatan Yes,Just a Little bit 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Can someone explain the number when u say u place and get x points of Ressource y
maybe a little late, but it seems he counts the dots right under the numbers together.
Echsenmeister nah i mean when he talks about pointa for example 0:35
@@BustaDeluxe Yes thats exactly what i mean, when he places a settlement on the corner of 5, 8 and 10, when you look at the number 5, 8 and 10 they have little dots under them. 5 -> 4, 8 -> 5 and 10 -> 3. The sum of the dots is 12 which he refers to as points.
Echsenmeister oh shit couldn’t see them.
I thought you were referring to the „dots“ where you place the city’s.
But how does this points get into the game, because if you play the board game there aren’t any dots or did i miss them too
@@BustaDeluxe the points only represent the chance of the number being rolled, therefore they dont get actually have any value besides being an indicator for the chance of getting a resource when you build on them
You try to explain there is a lot of strategy’s in Catan but it’s on chance with the dice
Man, orange is toxic
Doesn't say this was live streamed so I can only assume you couldn't be bothered to fix your audio.
What orange did is disgusting. He should have been banned for teaming.
Why would people blame orange?this is a reaction that you would have expected if you push a dog into a corner too hard and not giving it the chance. I wouldnt say this is a good sportmanship and i personally wouldnt do it, but hey everything happends for a reason.
I totally agree - I understand his perspective that he can’t win so why care? It makes a lot of sense, although a bit unfair to other players.
Taking 15 minutes per turn is pretty annoying
You should have traded 4 ores for wood. What's the point of keeping your hand full if you can't play the cards? Oh yeah, discarding when the robber hits.
What's the time stamp? Perhaps you're right; this video is from a while ago so I probably made a lot more mistakes.
Edit: If you’re talking about 6:24 where I had 2 bricks and 4 ores, it doesn’t make sense to 4:1. There’s only a 50% chance that a robber hits within an orbit. If a 7 didn’t hit on my next turn then I’d have a city and a development card, vs your play of still having a literal dead hand. I think you have to look at the risk and reward. The reward is too great to not hold. It also doesn’t make sense to 4:1 for a wood when I could still get Year of Plenty or Road Building.
If I did 4:1 for a wood and built a road the next turn my hand is stuck. Let’s compare this to holding my cards where I got 7’d out and still had a city in my hand. A city is better than a road,
@Rccamo3 Thank you for the compliment! I just read this now!
You talk like eric cartman
