For anyone watching this. If you run into trouble trying to get the bottom bolt in through the lower spacer bracket, remove that lower bracket altogether and put it on the alternator outside the car. Then when you put the alternator back in, its much easier to reach up and bolt the bottom bracket to the motor where there is much more hand room. Also it is optional whether or not you put the cable clip on the new alternator. With the terminals secured it wont be moving around anyways, and those brackets are known to cut your hands to shreds when working around them.
I used your video for my daughters 03 civic......great video but one "improvment" since the bumper shroud is already off, 4screws and the driver headlight assembly comes out and leaves a nice access port to work through and remove alternator through it as well as easier to see the various bolts and gives you a decent view of the belts and pulleys........just a simple suggestion or addition.......you guys ROCK thank you for the videos, huge fan, even mounted a tv in garage so I can play pause while working from your vdeos
Great video, it was a huge help!! One suggestion to anyone reading this *before* they do the work: wait to undo the battery cable wire and the plug from the alternator until *after* you get it fully loose. You can get the alternator into the nice open area vacated by the PS pump to easily access those two things, you can see the guy in the video struggle to get those off with the alternator in place, there was no need for that :-)

@@MK-xw1rpthat could be some number of things. Spark plugs misfiring, maybe injectors not feeding the fuel proper, something to do with your throttle etc. I’m not a mechanic tho, and see this was from 4yrs ago. What did it end up being?

Excellent video. You're very patient. I would be swearing for sure. Just got a call from my daughter. Her 05 Civic is dead. A tester revealed a bad alternator. My job for the weekend. Thanks for your assist.
very informative how-to! Most places want several hundred dollars for labor but I was able to do this myself in about 3 hours. Getting the old alternator out was straight forward and took about 1 hour of careful work. Putting the new one in required more work, about 2 hours. My OEM refurbished alternator was slightly wider than the car's hinge so I had to grind down the joint margins just a bit to make it fit. Threading the bottom screw + washer + track + hole was a nightmare. I ended up temporarily anchoring the alternator and then blindly threaded the screw + washer + track. That one screw took a good 20 minutes of effort. Putting the main belt on three pulleys was also a challenge until I put maximum slack on the tension washer. I agree with the comment about waiting to dismount the alternator before unlocking the power cables -- it's very difficult to do when still mounted because of small space. I also agree with the comment about first threading the holes in the new alternator before placing in the car. It makes it easier to thread later when it's in the car. I used both socket and allen wrenches, a crow bar, and penetrating oil. I highly recommend a flexible magnet (it's a very long malleable rod with a magnet on the end) for retrieving the dropped screws/bolts. No matter how careful you are you are bound to drop at least one. =)
Thank you very much ! 1) it was a real pain in the ass to install this alternator. They designed this complicated mechanics to send us to the dealership, but thanks to you I avoided that thanks to your video was .2) rather than using a mirror to install the bottom screw, I unscrew the bracket and I installed it in the bottom hole with the adjuster ... no need to make life complicated for nothing.

Obviously late reply. Some advice on this part, if you cut the left tire far to the right, you can reach your hand in there and actually fill it and feed the bolt through. If you're REALLY having issues you might save yourself some time, break the bolts loose on the tire, then jack it up, pull the tire off, you can easily get two hands in there to do it. I personally did my SERP belt/ alty replacement/install all at once and I did it with the front tire off to make the job way easier and faster.
You make it look easy enough so I started to work on mine. Can’t even get past the first screw lol. It must have been tightened with an impact. I’ve used bolt grip sockets and even a torch. What do you guys do for something like that?
Good video but expect this to take a couple of hours if you have never done this. Getting the lower alternator bolt and adjuster into the new alternator was the most difficult. You cannot see the bottom bolt and must do everything by feel. My reman alternator did not want to fit into the bracket at the top. With pliers you may have to push the new alternator bushing in to gain clearance. Clear the paint in the new alternator’s bolt holes with the old bolts before installing the new alternator.
Take the headlight assembly out next time, you can reach in and clearly see and line up the adjuster bolt, removing driver headlight assembly leaves a huge open port to work through

christ, honda engineers sure didnt make this easy to get done. I've likely got to help a friend this weekend on his civic as it sounds like his alternator bearing is going out. On my old car (90's celica) they had it mounted up top next to the exhaust manifold, pretty much just had to unscrew 2 bolts, the tensioner and you got it popped off. Was like a 10 minute job. I'm not exactly looking forward to this after we just had to replace his starter and pcv valve a week ago.

every day i take off the positive and negative terminals on my battery when i park it for more than couple hours.. i have drains on my electrical system which i cant seem to find by pulling the fuses.. however i tested the body to NEG post , with nothing connected to the battery and i got 10 volt reading .. could this be a bad battery ?
1A Auto Parts Heres what i did.. took off the main 2 lead wires to the fuse box under hood .. and tested for leaks ..i had no leaks, but when i put them back i get 12 volts leaking... (testing in series from negative post to negative wire) but i pull all fuses 1 by one and relays without the leak going away so i feel stumped . Alsoi can drive to work and remove the positive and 8 hours later i can drive it home but if i stop 10 minites for a coffee without removing the positive.. it cranks but no start until i spray quick start into the air intake.

@8:50 what if my old alternator doesn't have that braket? Does it matter?
I wouldn't think so, since it the bracket ends up connecting to plastic
HI , I HAVE A HONDA CIVIC 2004 ENGINE 1. 7L 4 cyl ( VITEC ) and need Information about yogur battery because I need a new Battery ! Thanks for yogur help , Sorry for my english, I From Costa Rica !
Well. Its out. Lol now to put new one in tmrw. Need deeper sockets for this job. If you dont have the longer deep socketa this is gunna take forever. Dont try to do that 12mm locking nut with ANYTHING that doesnt grip the whole 360 around the bolt. Itll pop off and strip.
Would this work on a 94
Honda usually gets everything right as far as easy maintenance. They completely dropped the ball on this one. Never had so much trouble replacing an alternator on any of the vehicles I've owned.
Has anyone purchased a 1A Auto alternator. If so are they any good? I bought a Duralast alternator and had to replace it 2 months after. Somehow Autozone had a bad batch of alternators. Looking into buying a 1A Auto Alternator.
Good video but not necessary to run the car for any length of time.
If you did it right. Charging a good battery takes about two min and can be done on the next drive.
I broke the bolt on alternator wires mount (the one at 9:04). can you tell me what the replacement screw/part number is? I have been unable to find it anywhere.
+comput 313 We do not have the part number of the replacement screw. Thanks for watching!
@@1AAuto Ended up using an M5 machine screw. Your videos have saved me $800 in labor costs so far keeping my civic running.
+comput 313 Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
What brand of alternator did you use? OEM? generic? special brand?
+Joseph Oliveros Thank you for checking us out. We used our 1A Auto brand alternator for this replacement. www.1aauto.com/acura-el-honda-civic-alternator/i/1aeal00432?UA-cam&CTA+Comment&E-_5drM4CM
What way does the b terminal sit? Im keep blowing the 80amp fuse
I thought my alternator was bad but the cable connecting to it had little corrosion. just sanded it off and boom. works perfectly
+Tommy D Sounds like an easy fix. That's always a nice surprise! Thanks for watching. 1aauto.com 866-403-3393
zeek would an alternator tester show a bad alternator even if it's corroded?
Does anyone know where to find a video of replacing the bracket that the alternator bolts to? Thank you
+Nicholas Trevino We're always cycling through common repairs. We'll add this repair to our list! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Buen video me dio muy buena idea para hacer ese mismo brete
My 01 civic kept dying kinda weird the check engine light didn't come on just the battery indicator light took it to a shop they couldn't find anything wrong with it it died again today checked the cranking amps guess what I need a new alternator showed I have 10.69 volts that explains why I lose power to brakes and power steering
Useful info I experienced the same, about to do it maself.
Anybody use their alternator and has a review? I gotta change mines due to my car just dying out of nowhere n terrible idling.
do you need that bracket
Thank you.
Do anyone know where you can buy the alternator adjustment bolt. Thanks
Junk yard.
Junkyard 5 finger discount ha ha
No wonder I got charged $150 just for the swap.
you were lucky if they only charged $150.00
two mechanics in Alabama wanted 600-650 parts and labor, which did include two new belts.
With American cars 10-15 min swap. With these cars 1-2 hours.
@@chrisdelgado3530 my Subaru alternator is literally the first and easiest job I learned how to do on it. it’s like right there at the front of the engine bay obstructed by nothing.
@ 11:10 whats the bolt size next to the adjustment bolt in the bracket
+Noe Anthrax Thanks for checking us out! This should be a 12mm bolt.
Anyone else have a little whining sound after the new alternator when accelerating not sure what it is not sure if it's a faulty alternator or sounding simple
+Trevor grubaugh You may want to check the idler pulley to see if it is going bad.
I swapped the alternator and now the fans won’t turn on and the a/c won’t blow in cold air and there’s a new battery too. Anyone with this problem?
The ac line wraps around the alternator, check if you didn't break it
Thank you so much for the upload, saved me a ton of time. I owe you a beer. Excellent video!

Did it in about 2 hrs with a swear jar but i did it
Thank you ++
christ, honda engineers sure didnt make this easy to get done. I'm not exactly looking forward to this after we just had to replace his starter and pcv valve a week ago.
perfect video ty

+bagonick modeste It may be different on that particular year. Here is a link to the alternator that we carry for the 2.2 4 liter motor, and a video that shows how to replace it. Hope this helps you out www.1aauto.com/1997-toyota-camry-alternator/y-mo-c/1997-384-69?UA-cam&CTA%20Comment&
1A Auto Parts thanks great help
This video saved my marriage. My wife is staying home boys!!! Woohooo!!
My pulley tensioner doesn't work out. Why is that?
But here is the problem somebody had the car before me they put the wrong size bolt in there so now unfortunately the alternator holder is attached to the engine
every day i take off the positive and negative terminals on my battery when i park it for more than couple hours.. i have drains on my electrical system which i cant seem to find by pulling the fuses.. however i tested the body to NEG post , with nothing connected to the battery and i got 10 volt reading .. could this be a bad battery ?
+Frank James It might be. Have you tried a different battery for the heck of it ?
1A Auto Parts i had a semi reputable shop test the battery.. in their dignosis
Adjust your camera,for better viewing.
seems like a nightmare of a job.
The battery light on my Honda civic just start flashing, please don't let me do this!!My car is even more rusty than this!
My car won’t start after r placing the alternator. It was working before. What could I have done wrong?
