Gentlemen…. I have been so impressed by your adventurousness and embrace of this music. I have been listening to Led Zepplin since 1970. The year I came home from Vietnam. I was there at an air base where we had our barracks and big wall lockers. Many of us had $1,000 worth is stereo equipment and head phones. The music was our refuge from the craziness of where we were. That year I discovered LZ 1 and 2. They were ground breaking then and still are very deep in my heart. Oh. I’m a black guy, formerly from LA now retired to Jacksonville Florida. 72 years young. You guys give me hope. You have opened your minds and are sharing your findings. Never stop. Never.
Thanks for rocking with us!! You’re the same age as our dad and he is a vet as well.
With "Tangerine," Robert Plant would sometimes introduce this at concerts by saying: "This song is for our families and friends and people we've been close to. It's a song of love at its most innocent stages." Plant also said the lyrics are personal to him as it was written with regards to a love interest of his that slipped away over time. And he wonders what might've been- "I was her love, she was my queen, now a thousand years between..."
Gallows Pole is one of my favorite Zep songs. The banjo was a big part of the swing era, not just country music.
This album is fantastic. Massively underrated
It's an amazing a crazy album all the way through- can't understand why anyone who calls themselves a LZ fan wouldn't dig it.
Tangerine, if you already didn't know, was a song Page wrote about the American singer/songwriter early 60s girlfriend Jackie DeShannon; whom he collaborated songwriting with. I think he loved her and got his heart broken!!
When the lead comes in on Tangerine, after "and I do..." I always get goosebumps. Great vibe.
Because plant sound so vulnerable, it’s a piece of musical beauty
I agree. It is a perfect moment captured on tape. So emotionally charged. Definitely get goosebumps.
Love Tangerine, not that well known of theirs, but it is beautiful, and a short song for them.
Listen to the song Hot Dog.
You have to give mad mad mad props to John Paul Jones Bass playing, style and tone! Dude is a femonimal Bassist and Musician!
THANK YOU!!!
"fenominal"?....🤪
I love this album because of all the different musical instruments they brought into rock music. The same as the Beatles, they showed that rock music can be more than guitar, bass and drums.✌️
It is a banjo on Gallows Pole, which is actually based off a song that goes back centuries. It slowly builds in intensity like another song off their next album, Stairway to Heaven. Also the drums come in later, like in Stairway too. It’s a great song that gives me bluegrass vibes.
Banjo and mandolin.
I love you guys. What makes you different is the fact that you LOVE music and APPRECIATE music, I love it. Keep it going guys.
Totally agree!
The ORIGINAL album cover actually has a spin wheel inside of it, so you can change what is inside the little circles.... Not sure if the Reproduction albums do that too...
Zepplin created some of the best get stoned and hang out with your buds music ever😂🎉❤
I’m a III album lover! It’s the most open and innovative in my opinion.
Some of Zeppelin’s greatest songs are on that record. Since i been loving you is a masterpiece. That’s the way, Going to California! Great record
This song is what happens when four master musicians come together. All part are equal, all contribute to the sound of perfection. BTW I had this on 8 track. Yes I am old!
Had LZIII on tape which jammed up then snapped. Had to take it apart and fix with a tiny piece of selotape.
Oh the joy when it worked. Those were the days. :)
Yeah done that fix also bro@@spoonunit03
Memories OMG😂
No one sings lead vocal for Led Zeppelin but Robert Plant.
I Love them all. Physical Graffiti by far is favorite. Keep rocking Gents❤
Lest we not forget, Since I've Been Loving You was also on this album and is considered one of their great masterpieces of blues rock. I bought this when it was brand new and loved it as much as the first 2 albums, and saw them live on the supporting tour.
The fact that this album is so different from the first two, but is still unmistakably LZ is a true testament to how great they were and that they were not afraid to expand their sound. Love the discussion once again. ✌️
They were all brilliant and together they were masterful. In my opinion, JPJ was the swiss army knife and the glue that held the music together
Gallows pole is my favorite Zepplin song. The story cracks me up!
Tangerine about a summer of young love and how it comes to its enevitable end.
Sweet tale.
All right Brothers, let's start today and get the LED out! Love your channel. You guys truly comprehend the magnitude of 1960s and 1970s music! There is nothing like it and they never will be, some people just don't understand!
Led Zeppelin were masters at putting their own arrangement on old traditional gospel and blues songs. When the Levee Breaks, In My Time of Dying, Nobody's Fault But Mine are three of my favourites along with this one. Gallows Pole stands out because of its acoustic flavour and use of the banjo. Great song pick guys
They were also masters of using material without permission credit or paying royalties to black blues srtsts
And it's an old British folk song for a change. 19th century or earlier.
IN THE LATE 1960s and throughout the Seventies, Jimmy Page helped shape and define the future of rock & roll with his work in the Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin. However, in the years prior, he’d already made an immeasurable impact on the sound of popular music by way of the hundreds and perhaps even thousands of recording sessions he sat in on as an anonymous face in the many studios that dotted London at the time.
I always liked "III" beter than its predecessors. I felt "I" and "II" were too bluesy. My fav Zepp album is 1975's "Physical Graffiti". But hey, I'm from Belgium, we've always been a bit weird. Cheerio, lads.
You know you are special when what some people consider your worst album is still a masterpiece in comparison to other artists.
Indeed, it's my favorite.
Not their worst album.
@@paulprendergast3184 They didn't make a bad album. I was pointing out the irony ...
Wow some consider this under presence or coda? Any album with “Since I’ve Been Loving You” on it is a masterpiece. IMHO
@@kikivon3501 I have to agree.
Country, Folk, Bluegrass, Reggae, Rock, Funk...but you can always tell it's Led Zeppelin. And they always KILL it.
Robert’s take on gallow pole with band of joy is worth a listen
My fav zeppelin album
'ACHILLES LAST STAND', that's the song i'm waiting for you to listen to, it's also fantastic, three cheers to you two and thanks
Its good to see that you played these two tracks together, as it should be. Much the same as Heartbreaker and Living Loving Maid need to be heard together too.
What a slammin' tune and also kind of a turning point for them
Experimentation yes...but I'd also call it "evolution". They were growing up, shedding a bit of the Cream inspired blues rock that got them on the map and starting to carve out their own sound which would come to fruition on Zeppelin IV
LZ3 was a very experimental album. they were exploring folk, country, and bluegrass in most of the songs, but they did put their own spin on it.
As I've previously admitted, it took me a while to get it with this album. I had my own expectations of what LZIII should be, but they had their own ideas, and they obviously knew best.
Love this album, my favorite Led Zeppelin. Alrighty, some true fans don't rank it high, and that's cool, but I love it.
Thank you!
I'm honestly glad they made this album! I think this was the album that defined them during those hard early times and gave them the baggage to move on!
Especially Tangerine is, to me, a masterpiece. Pulled the thread of Led Zeppelin I & II's dirty American blues right up to the edge of country and English folk. And an important thing to bear in mind when listening to this album is how it set the stage for things like Stairway to Heaven which were to come in the not too distant future. So many great songs on this album, though, and it was the one that inspired my interest in travel-I wanted to know why it was so different and what they did and where they went. Ended up getting obsessed with Wales and even ended up going to school one train stop away from the cottage they had been at. The UK was my first ever trip, because I wanted to see where these guys played and what they did. And now I've been to almost 70 countries in the past decade.
The models, years, brands of instruments are carefully selected. This album has high end Martin D28 Acoustic, mandolins, fender Tele b bender. Amplifiers. A big part of all famous musicians from the 70’s were extremely diligent in finding high quality amps, guitars, drums, bass. Most all the greats also have great instruments by their side deliberately hunted for.
12 string acoustic, a Mandolin, a banjo then an electric guitar is what you heard in the first song along with JPJs Bass guitar.
The second song there is also a 12 string acoustic, maybe a six string in the middle, hints of a mandolin and a steel lap slide guitar (electric).
From what I recall, the critics hated the first two Led Zep albums and at the time folk music was really pushing the whole hippie movement and was the critical darling. With Led Zep III the band wanted to prove they could play folk music and any of the critics' favorite bands. I love Led Zep II, if not just for the change of pace, but I'm sure glad they got back to heavy blues rock on Led Zep IV. I can't wait until you two get to Physical Graffiti. It's a double album and probably my favorite of theirs. Definitely got my favorite song, Ten Years Gone. And that's a banjo in Gallows Pole. Along with folk music, Bluegrass music was making a comeback. Being from Kentucky, the birthplace of Bluegrass music, I know a bit about it.
As someone may have mentioned, this is their take on a very old English folk (for want of a better word) song. Not country music, but rather English folk---Zep style.
Fella’s, it’s just Rock n Roll!! A mixture of what you are describing is Rock and Roll🤟🏼😎
This takes me back to my sophomore year in high school. Epoch times in the history of rock!
Gallows Pole was based on an old English (16th Century) folk song. I remember learning this song in schools (the 16th century version) back in the early sixties. I imagine it was part of the English schools curriculum, and that would be where Page first heard it (he being at school when I was). Yeah, I'm an old git.
U make me fall all over my LED ZEPPELIN THANK YOU
theyre such a versatile band, they could do ANYTHING and go ANYWHERE musically!
You guys get it about this band. Even if you don't like it, you have to respect it.
You never knew what instrument would pop up on one of their songs. Banjo, violin, mandolin, were all used.
My Grandpa had a cpl Led Zeppelin Albums and this is how I became a LED HEAD. His favorite song was Tangerine and I’ve been waiting for your reaction to that song. Thank You 😊
Dang fellas these zeppelin and steely dan reactions are righteous! Can't wait for ya'll to get to IV! The Rain Song is a masterpiece!
So glad y’all are playing and enjoying Led Zeppelin. Been listening to them for 50 years and their music remains relevant and timeless. Yes, they are hypnotic!
Love this album. But I live them all. It's Robert singing all the time. Bonzo would do a little background here and there. Robert has a big range in his voice. Great job 👏
8th grade I wrote a paper dissecting this song (1 of 4 papers I wrote in school about Led Zeppelin)
When you think you've figured them out....they go in a completely new direction. They will keep doing that to you through every album. Just lean back and enjoy whatever they give you.
They were never afraid to do different things. That's what makes them so great. It's a journey enjoy the ride🎸🎸
I think you guys are the best Led Zeppelin reactors. You understand the music very well.
Led Zeppelin 3 has “only” 4 classic songs on it ..any other band this would be there magnum opus.
This is how good this band is.
You will begin the enter the rabbit hole shortly….just a warning.
Led Zeppelin is my all time favourite band. I love this album!! Every one of theur albums were works if art and each one different. Theyre amazing, the four if them all work together so beautifully, just incredible. I cant imagine the world without Zeppelin 🤗😎🌏🪐🌕🙏🍀🐝🌺🇦🇺🌸🦋🦉🏡🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 this sing is fantastic😃❤❤❤
Tangerine is such a sweet song!! Gallows Pole..so dark!
Thank You Thank You brings memories of my fav Gpa when I was just a little girl. He worked on the railroad and I spent summer’s with them. We would go on country rides and me and Gma would get out and pick wild flowers. Meanwhile Gpa is sitting in his Cherry Red Mustang. I always wondered why Gpa didn’t get out. I think I might know why 💨 😂😂😂
Tangerine is one of my fav Zep tracks, stunning vocals. Definitely a love song
Blues, country, 50's rocks and roll even old medieval music influenced them.
48 years ago tonight, I was in the front row for Led Zeppelin. For 3 and a half hours, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham were just a few feet away from me, putting on an incredible incredible show.
Sister I implore you, take him by the hand , take him to some shady bower , save me from the wrath of this man..
If you ever get to hear these on a really good stereo, it will absolutely BLOW YOUR MIND! III is their best album, and these are the 2 best songs.
The album cover had an insert that you could spin around to see different artwork in the circles on the cover. Very nifty little addition!
my days man. my days
I been listening to this group fo 40 years or more
It is a banjo! It’s always been one of my favorite Zep songs. Wait till you guys get to The Song Remains the Same (live album) and Physical Graffiti and Presence! Great stuff!
Check out the Gallows Pole song from the Page & Plant live album, 'No Quarter'. In fact, check out that whole concert, which includes an Arabic orchestra and many traditional folk instruments, as well as electric guitars etc.
Another great reaction coming from a couple of musicians who are getting a better understanding from where they are coming from. Music isn't invented, merely branches of the same tree.
Led Zeppelin, has a very romantic style in their music and it's a tale of an on-going story by volumes
For a real treat check out "Robert Plants Band of Joy - Live From the Artists Den" version, it just builds and builds....with the added bonus - some of the best musicians on the planet!
Yes it was the banjo and it’s said that Jimmy had never played one until the recording of this song. Can’t wait for u to dive into Zeppelin untitled IV album. It is there top grossing album released in 1971.
This is ONE of my favorite LZ albums, I think simply because it didn’t get a ton of airplay, so I haven’t heard most of these songs a ton of times.
Other band members have occasionally provided back up vocals, but Robert Plant has lead the vocals on every song.
Should have said in my post just before-- they do to this English folk song what they did to "Bring it on Home from Zep II album"--start out reflecting the original version/genre then turn the song into a Zep version.
This album is their unplugged album so to speak. Great tunes with just a different vibe.
Dig your LZ journey reactions, cant wait till you react to LZ Presents album, pure musical masterpieces!!!
The song that got me into Led Zepp in 84
Man, “Tangerine” sounds like Zep doing their impression of the Rolling Stones interpretation of the “Bakersfield sound” (Buck Owens et.al.). Wild.
robert plant appeared at many folk festivals , some with sandy denny the vocalist from the battle of evermore, and recently made a bluegrass album with allison krauss
Tom Petty " It'll all work out " with Bobby Valintino on violin .
Now that's a live song !
Blood, Sweat and Tears + Tom Jones part 11. IT WILL BLOW you away!!
LZ 1 is my favorite album by the band. But Gallows Pole, Since I've Been Loving You and Tangerine are some of my favorite songs by Zeppelin.
Love the vocals in Gallows.
Y'all are gonna have to listen to Hey Hey What Can I Do. It was on the B side of the Immigrant song 45 single.
Solo Robert Plant ~ Sea Of Love, Big Log, In The Mood, Heaven Knows, Little By Little, Tall Cool One, Ship Of Fools...!
looking forward to the next one. one of my faves
Love this album
Yes
The third album is my favorite. Nice reactions!
There's a reason this album is so acoustic heavy. Most of it was written in an old castle in the South of England called Headley Grange. The band didn't know right off how accessible things like electricity were going to be, so they brought mostly acoustic instruments with them.
I understood most of the songs on this album were written in a cottage in Wales called Bron Yr Aur which probably didn't have those amenities. I'm sure Headley Grange would have had electricity.
Yup
Just now watching and love this already and it hasn’t even started yet.
There 3d album was known as their acoustic album and it was put together in response to the critics that called them just a hard rock band - their reply… no we are not! Thank you very much.
Tangerine is actually a song from Jimmy Page's earlier band > The Yardbirds - Knowing You .Incidentally , Dazed & Confused had its starting roots in the Yardbirds as well
Led Zeppelin was the master of keeping you guessing. Their experimentation with different styles enabled other bands to do the same without being considered strange or out there. Amazing band. My favorite since I first heard them in the 70s as a kid.
The mellifluous sounds from Page's guitar here have long made this one a favorite from III. So sweet and melancholy.
another favorite
Tangerine is pure Zep magic. It's hard to put a finger on exactly what it is, but in your heart you know the energy dates back centuries.
Yeah the solo is just haunting
Thanks so much for checking out the music of Led Zeppelin. There;s many life and musical stories to the members of the band. Here's a live version from the mid-90's when Page and Plant got together, although they do seem to have forgotten John Paul Jones' number, has he onve famously said ua-cam.com/video/Ene4gCWPCOo/v-deo.html
