Does that mean that eventually there will be an aggressive resurgence of love for this game in another 10 years or so like Zelda 2 is currently having?
Just wanted to chime in and say your channel deserves more subscribers! You have an excellent camera presence and you’re genuinely very funny in your deliveries and gags! Keep up the great work!
interesting enough Imamura just confirmed this month the Marcus ending was indeed intended to be the canon ending. Also interesting enough some of the devs once said in a interview that originally they had planned on doing a sequel to Command for the launch of the 3DS but they wouldn't have enough dev time to do it right, which is why they pivoted to doing a StarFox Prequel with James before finally pivoting to simply remaking SF64 for the 3DS
Honestly, I think this might be my favorite game in the series as I love crazy fanfics and having lots of playable characters. Helps that I played it in short bursts over a long time as well.
Playing it in short bursts probably is the ideal way to play. It doesn't solve every issue, but it definitely makes everything more digestible. I love to hear that this is someone's favorite though. I meant it early on that I always love to hear from people who might think Adventures is there favorite for example despite my own personal gripes. Even when I'm critical of something, I hope it always come off as a desire for more because I love games so much. With Command, I genuinely had a very good time for a decent chunk of the game too.
I really tried liking this game when it came out. The constant jumping in and out of tiny battles drove me crazy, just way too repetitive. Thanks for taking one for the team to make this video!
I probably wouldn't care if they didn't create a continuity to follow, only to kinda just tease around it for so long. I can't say I care THAT strongly, but if they want to make a canon across the games then I'll naturally be invested in that to some degree.
As a kid who LOVED the 64 game, being able to play something like it on a portable was a dream come true, and I loved this game even with all its flaws. Great job with the retrospective!
When I got a hold of this game, I was deep in my fanfic consumption years, so I ate this soap opera stuff right up. I would power through every branch just to see all these story beats play out. It makes me kinda sad that I can't handle playing it anymore these days because of how I have less patience for the tedium, and the fact that 90% of the dialogue is about relationship issues doesn't entertain like it once did. Still, I enjoyed my time with it back then, and I maintain that they can still do stuff with this universe. Having a bunch of characters spread across a bunch of planets who have their own things going on has more potential than Nintendo will ever see.
I actually think you touched on a cool possibility. Have a Star Fox story where the crew is split and operating around the Lylat System separate from one another could be an incredible story with the potential to really highlight the strengths and weaknesses of each individual
I actually remember this game semi-fondly as I got it for Christmas 2006, and it seemed like there was an attempt to bring back Starfox between this and Assault on GameCube, only to plunge the franchise back into hibernation until well uh ... Zero. And now here we are again
A definite DS game recommendation is Sonic Rush Adventure, so the second one. This was one of my childhood games, but it held up having recently replayed it. Though, I believe I have shared this before, playing sideways on my Steam Deck.
I really wanna play through all of the Sonic DS games actually. I've not played any of them and they look really fun! Well...Sonic Chronicles I mostly want to play out of morbid curiosity honestly. I don't know if I'd say that one in particular looks like "fun".
If you go an search interviews from imumura, the writter and artist of the series. He'll actually explain that command was originally going to be a more linear story but the head of q games wanted the game to have branching paths. This is where things went wrong narrativly as a more linear story would have resulted in a less messy narrative and probably prevent the epilog we see at the start. Gameplay wise their mistake was making it for the DC. I honestly think this game could have been even better if it took more elements from star fox 2 such as the walker sections but on foot. The walker sections add variety to the gameplay and kept things fresh. It being made and released on the wii would have done so much better as evident by how the concole itself over shadowed it by how revolutionary it was. Point at the tv to where you want to send your pilots to, a bomb, or aim with it while flying or on foot. (Also i recently learned that aiming with motion controls on the wii was too good that for the call of duty games had to make separate servers because duel stick players were just getting crushed). Now that I mentioned that I'm starting to double down on that idea because this would have been a great way to demonstrate the wiis hardware. The only reason we didn't get a new sf game during the wii era was because they couldn't come up with a new gimmick. If they waited on making the new sf game after assault, if they waited for the wii then they could have made it for the wii. Now if they were really persistent about alternative routes then just do it like the original sf game. There are three routes but they don't crisscross so we could still have a stronger narrative. Heck have each path actually sort of continue the narrative sort of like 64 with star wolf. The easy route is the beginning and the hard route is the end.
You make a great point about the Wii. Also, I played A TON of shooters during this time but not mostly on PC, but I can say for certain that I played some Call of Duty on Wii because the motion controls were actually really fun. What's interesting though is that Star Fox didn't ever receive anything for the Wii. You kind of come up with your own thoughts and ideas immediately and if Nintendo really wanted Star Fox to be the "explore technical options" proof of concept title then having it on the Wii to explore motion would've made perfect sense. Star Fox as a series fascinates me so much because it's an interesting relationship where the creators and the players seemingly enjoy it for completely opposite reasons and have wildly different desires for it's future.
@@Zerbraxi It's interesting at best and hair pulling at worst. The GIMMICK first approach is really harming the series for its gameplay as well as if we get one or not. If they can't find a unique gimmick to make a starfox game with then there won't be one for that console generation. You can find interviews of miyamoto about the serise, sf zero and why there wasn't one for wii and it's basically because of what I mentioned before. It's just so annoying, it doesn't help that command has written the series into a corner with no way out
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's still kinda crazy I have the amount of subs I have now honestly. This many people actually want to be notified of whenever I wanna run my mouth? LOL!
And yes about the gameplay - I can say that if you clear the location of all enemies, including those that are not the target, you get a missile. And so it is yes ch first with the first pass lag and tried to kill only those who need to kill, but after some time I still learned to clear the location of enemies).
I feel like Command should've been an all-out huge budget Wii game, not a cheap DS game. It's also a crime for a Star Fox game to not have traditional voice acting, like, it's what the franchise is partly known for.
The voice acting is a tough one. Me personally, I still regularly quote Star Fox 64 on a weekly basis....still...after all these years. At the same time, I've had people comment on my videos about how much they miss the original gibberish. I kinda get it. I like the Banjo Kazooie gibberish for example. I think the VA is one where it'll never make everyone happy so I'm kinda cool with them bouncing between the 2. The fact we never got a Wii Star Fox is a legit crime though. Sin & Punishment Star Successor showed just how well it could've worked. That game is so good. I need to cover it...
For as flawed as the Adventures trilogy (Adventures, Assault, and Command) is, I at least give it credit for trying to move the narrative of Star Fox forward. Every SF game made in house at Nintendo seems content with retelling the same damn story from the SNES game...
Yeah...I think with 64 nobody really cared because so much was added and expanded that it truly does feel like it's own experience rather than a copy of the SNES narrative. Considering now though that we have FOUR titles telling basically the same story, SNES -> 64 -> 643D -> Zero...yeah, I totally agree that at least Adventures, Assault, & Command were adding to the plot. Well...except nothing in Command is canon which kinda sucks :(
@@Zerbraxi64 added so much into the series that they still use the same exact mechanics(at least for the airwing parts) in each future game, that’s why Nintendo always goes back to just rebooting it because it always worked(until zero).
The first time I ever played a Star Fox game was the SNES classic and I didn’t think much of it other than that the graphics weren’t super pleasant to look at. You’ve definitely inspired me to dig deeper into the franchise. Wish there was one on the switch
In retrospect, if any of the endings were canon, it could have left the series on an unresolved cliffhanger, much like Sly Cooper and Mega Man have been.
I think there are a couple that were a pretty good, start -> finish and wrapped up. I think those would've worked fine. Though ya, something like Sly would've sucked.
I really enjoyed this game during its time, one thing I really love is how each character had its own ship and music theme. The only thing that I was disappointed with was that you could only play with Fox's arwing online.
Unfortunately I didn't get to explore the online play for this one but that's good to know, and slightly disappointing. All of the different themes, ships, and ship gameplay is genuinely an awesome part of the game for sure. That can't be taken away from it.
This was a really cool deep dive on this game. I'm more of a fair weather Star Fox fan who grew up playing the SNES original and then 64. Without playing the 2 on the GameCube (though I knew of Adventures) I went into this one not knowing what to expect. Overall, I really liked it. The thrill of seeking out a new ending is real. A lot of the endings do catch you off guard but, like you said in your video, you really do get a feel for the game and it gets pretty fun to play. I totally agree with the "trim the fat" part you said. It REALLY sucks to pick different choices and get a similar ending after playing the same levels. Thanks for the video! I really enjoyed it!
One of the fun games I enjoyed playing on my DS is Brothers and Arms DS. 3rd person shooter with doom like graphics. I usually play this game while watching Band of brothers.
I found this channel while looking up things on Golden Sun while feeling nostalgic. Quickly subscribed, and I have been loving these videos! Please do more! Would you ever consider doing a series on the Mario and Luigi games?
I don't plan on stopping anytime soon! I have good news for you. Mario & Luigi has been on my project list since I started doing this "new for me" format of retrospectives about a year ago or so. It's a series I don't actually know much about, but one that has always bee incredibly interesting to me and I would LOVE to dive into every one of those titles at some point.
@@Zerbraxi That's awesome! I certainly enjoyed them and I'm sure you will too! They have a button press mechanic to increase damage of attacks or go decrease incoming damage or counterattack. There's even a system for special moves, which also require timed button presses, wherein you can reduce the cost of the moves but removes any prompts and slowdown. It's a really cool risk and reward mechanic. Superstar saga (the first game) can be a lot of fun, the battles are interesting, though they can get repetitive. If I could suggest another game. Wild Guns for the SNES is an amazing (and short) game! It's a ton of fun and I would highly recommend it whether or not a video is made on it.
I watched a video about Star Fox Comman and..... Let's just say I agree with what you're saying about this game. Well I didn't understand the story in the game itself either. And the ending, which opens with the very first scene showing Crystal's development as, I don't know.... A girl with a grudge against a guy, either forgiving or running away. And man, I didn't really like that kind of plot development. And the very last ending, which I opened and thus completed the passage on the original DSi, is the one in which Fox decides to temporarily disband the team, returns to Sauria to Krystal and after some time appears a child named Marcus, who in the future will form a new team. Yes, of course, for some people it will seem that the ending is good, but slightly incomprehensible. But for me personally, the ending with Fox and Krystal's son is the most excellent of all 9^^"
Lol this game looks like a mess. As soon as you mentioned stylus it reminded me of the Zelda game I couldn't get past the first 5 minutes when I realized it used the stylus as main movement. Great review my dude!
Thank you! Yeah I wanna go back to Phantom Hourglass specifically to see if my thoughts have changed but the stylus controls make me want to yeet my DS
Idk the general fandom's opinions but for me, i AM that guy who LOVES Command. Maybe because I'm old and played too many RTS's and Turn Based Strategy games but omg TACTICS in a STARFOX game??! Underappreciated by most, I'd GLADLY take another crack at this than Starfox 1 for the 5TH. FUCKING. TIME. Good vid.
You already sort of have the Star Fox team breaking up already in adventures. Sure, it didn't break up completely, but Falco was gone and everything was run down. Honestly, this game felt like they decided that what Fox really needed was Peter Parker's luck.
You know growing up star Fox 64 was one of my first games ever right along side Pokemon yellow. I remember my brother playing Adventure, and playing assault that I've never finished. I got zero. But watching your journey has encouraged me to try the series again as an adult. I stumbled onto your videos in my recommended feed and I'm glad I did. Congrats on your new subscriber I look forward to hearing you review Zero
I'm so glad you like the videos. It means so much to me. I'm hoping to finish Zero, as well as a couple related to Star Fox but not directly Star Fox videos, this year to kind of wrap up this journey. I hope you like what's still to come :)
One DS game that will always have a place in my heart is Draglade. Fantastic mix of fighting and a rhythm game. Has a very anime plot and feels kind of perfect for an anime adaptation.
This is the one Star Fox game I have not played and will never play (I can't deal with touchscreen controls) It looks better than I expected, but the repetition and gameplay doesn't seem that great. 3:14 Well if you want another DS game about anthro characters piloting vehicles try (download because it's expensive) Solatorobo. Any of the three Castlevania games are great, moreso Portrait of Ruin, and Ecclesia Dragon Quest Rocket Slime is extremely unique and fun while having a great sense of humor
Thank you so much for the recommendations. I've played quite a bit of Dawn of Sorrow and really enjoyed it so I do really need to get around to finishing it and playing the others. In fact, I need to get around to the DS and the GBA Castlevanias as I've mostly only experienced the NES & SNES games. Solatorobo is a name I feel like I've heard before. Never heard of that Dragon Quest game but that series is so fun and unique that I'll happily give it a go. Thanks again for watching and for the game recommendations.
I actually got this game for Christmas knowing the games reputation. I started playing and I sighed, looked over at my brother and said: "damn it, the controls actually work". Still perfer standard controls though
Hey man great video! Found your channel by craving a golden sun lost age video after josh and majuunlar both only focused on the first game and never thought I'd interested in a starfox retro of any kind, loved 64 but thats about it, looks like youve been on the platform a long time and i know these long form videos take of a ton of work but hope you stay with it and I'll be tuning in!
Since this game was made by an English-speaking dev team, isnt the English dialogue actually the original? And it’s the Japanese version that changed it?
Actually Q-Games is housed in Japan. While yes, Dylan Cuthbert is a native English speaker from the UK, his studio is Japanese and the employees are mostly Japanese natives. The original dialogue was in Japanese with NoA providing the translation to English.
3:13 Super late to this video for giving any recommendations, BUT... Solatorobo: Red the Hunter is a personal favorite of mine for the DS. The gameplay is a bit simple, but the characters are great, and the story is also very interesting. It's a part of the "Little Tail Bronx" series, and is a sequel of sorts to Tail Concerto for the PS1. (It also has a planned trilogy of prequel games under the series title of Fuga: Melodies of Steel. The first two games in this sub-series have already been released. The Fuga games are unlike the PS1 and DS games though as they are turn-based RPGs instead of being 3D platformer-ish.)
Great review man as for me I couldn’t get into Star fox command to tell you the truth growing up, mostly because it felt like a mess of a story that made no whatsoever at least in my opinion.
@@Zerbraxi thank you and honestly to tell you the truth as a huge fan of Star fox assault story and the characters Especially with fox and Crystal it really felt like they threw away this great story for nonsense which made no sense whatsoever at least in my opinion.
@@Zerbraxi indeed which is why I always ignore Star fox command even happening and have my canon basically Star fox 64 star fox adventures and Star fox assault with fox and the gang defeating andross rescuing Crystal from Dinosaur planet defeating aproids and fox and Crystal living happily ever after and the rest crew still being a team and kicking ass at least in my opinion.
I think people only started looking on the game negatively in hindsight, anyone playing it when it was new thought it was cool. Especially since it had the best multiplayer and download multi like Mario Kart, so only 1 person had to own the game and 4 could play. That was gold on the band bus.
Also, you were never meant to binge this game. Back in the day and being young, you didn't get games constantly, so the replaying was valuable, and it was a DS game, so it was for picking up and putting down over time.
I never really understood the "you weren't meant to binge it. " I get that it mightve been the design intention, but even as a child with limited new games, I would binge these types of games nonstop. Sure I'd replay it for 70 hours or whatever, but sometimes design intent doesn't always align with player intent . You're definitely right about the multiplayer. I wish I had a better way to cover it for the episode cuz it's actually pretty great for what it is, and especially for its time.
I feel the first ending was badly written to incentivize the player to get the other endings. While I feel it was written in the visual novel tradition (with some joke and messed up endings), some are just plain bad, not in the sense they're bad endings, but badly written endings.
"None of Them", what an ending. And what an interesting game, seems like they threw a lot of ideas at it with incredibly mixed success. Shameful that the translation is that bad, along with the pacing of the game and ending tree.
@@Zerbraxiwell here is an interesting perspective on the game that I don't think you talked about. None of the endings are canon but the prolog is or at least according to the devs that the next game would probably start in the middle of command or just use the prolog as a jumping off point. Sounds bad at first but when you think about it, this sequel would technically be a RE DO of Command. This would be a golden opportunity to rewrite the story, have the anglars have a presences and not an after thought. Have the characters act more like themselves and have a play style that isn't repetitive. Heck it's been almost 18 years since command came out, they would need to recap the players or rather, re write the prolog to work with the gameplay and story they want to tell. (Also Zero isn't a reboot, its a reimagining and coexist along with 64 and the snes game).
Thank you for these! I have played The World Ends With You and ABSOLUTELY ADORE IT! I vividly remember hearing the music in the trailer and driving to the store 5 minutes later to pick it up lol. I haven't played Neo yet but hope to at some point. I have the DS remakes of DQ 4 and 5 I beleive, but not 6. I know 5 is one of the big fan favorites, but is 4 the one that's the rather unique one with the monster catching mechanic? That idea always interests me. If I'm super mistaken my apologies. I've always wanted to play more Dragon Quest but time always restricted it. I've played some of DQ 1, some of DQ 8, finished 9, and never finished 11 but probably put about 60 hours into it and loved it.
@@Zerbraxi Thanks for the reply. DQ5 is the one with the monster catching mechanic, outside of the monsters spinoffs. DQ4 is the one where the story is divided into chapters, with each party member being the main character of their respected chapter.
Don't worry bro. I got you! I'm working on a Project that will settle the Whole Thing. All I need is some way to Contact Nintendo. I've already tried Email but they apparently don't have one, Calling is out of the Question due to well the Language Barrier, the fact that I'd be Charged by my Provider for International Calls, and I haven't found a Phone Number for Nintendo so I kind of have to Rely on all the Chads out there to help me out with that. My Project may also be more Mature and Dark though.
I hope I came off fair in the back and forth frustrations and praise because dang dude...so much about this game is WAY better than I've been lead to believe all these years.
Second person on this video who recommended Sonic Rush Adventure. I've always wanted to get to the Sonic DS games and that interest is only growing now.
I guess i like the Star Fox games people hate. I was really digging this one when it came out... but by the 5th play through i was like "okay, imma just gonna google the endings now" 😂. And i really like Zero, it may even be my favorite. Although, it did take like 2 and half playthroughs before the controls clicked. Thats.. thats way too long and i can understand why people gave up on it immediately.
So, about James appearing on Venom, there is dialogue on the fifth turn if you didn't take out all the targets yet. Just thought I'd point that out. It doesn't play when you take out all the targets before he appears. ua-cam.com/video/zhnrgfdOeEY/v-deo.html From 2:43:27 to 2:43:47 in that video.
Oh wow...That interaction really should've been there regardless of the stage's clear success. It still just makes it seem like Fox is losing it, and is perhaps a bit too copy/paste from 64's hard ending, but it would've at least provided WAY more context than what I got which was quite literally nothing lol. Thank you so much for sharing that. That was awesome of you!
@@Zerbraxi Yeah. And you're welcome. I actually experienced that dialogue when I played the game decades ago as a kid. There aren't many videos with that dialogue on UA-cam however.
The game is cheesy as hell but, I still can't help but like it, even the bad endings, especially the bad endings. Also any time you can play Panther, is a highlight, just 1 shotting most enemies. Just don't marathon it, and play it a little by little, and it's much more digestible experience. Besides it'll cause you physical pain if you play it too long, trying to keep the stylist and holding the system, and having at least one button (I used the d-pad) to shoot with, is a bit of an ask.
You can't avoid Zero forever. It's the last game in this star fox retrospective. People will notice if you skip it. And oh, remember, the game has a button you can press to swap what screen shows the normal and cockpit view.@@Zerbraxi
Absolutely! It's taking a little bit because I want to do a bit more with it which is why I've done some other videos in the meantime. There's a lot surrounding Zero . I also really want to cover the Sin and Punishment games before it as well, mostly because I think there is a ton to discuss between Star Successor and Star Fox Zero Tldr, it's coming but it's gonna take a bit longer than normal
Star fox 2’s framework just seems so much more fun, no nonsense story to interrupt everything. God, if only that game ran at a smooth, even just 20 fps…
I really think they struck something special with Star Fox 2. It just didn't function well enough for the time. To think about that game made in a modern design, taking advantage of the Arwing play, the strategy, and basically roguelite mechanics, I think there's something really great there. Add in the extra characters and upgrades along the way, expand the scope slightly and it's the groundwork for a Star Fox that would genuinely excite me. And it's not far off 2
@@Gamerbropart2 Might you mean perhaps like Star Fox Virtual Boy, Grounded, Event Horizon, EX, Conquest, Revolution, Remadventures or the upcoming EX Zodiac? I have some ideas :)
So Zerbraxi, it seems I do care enough about you to the point of looking through all the Nintendo DS library to see if there are notable games to recommend to you and maybe find something I would be interested in as well. Firstly, the DS games I been playing or had played: *Professor Layton The Last Specter, Megaman Star Force, Dragon Quest IX* (Last Specter is a really great point and click puzzle game that its very fun, Megaman Star Force is an awesome Rpg, with a cool story and characters and I love playing it and Dragon Quest was cool at first, but sooner the game became tedious and I dropped) Second, the DS games that have versions/sequels on Switch: *Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, The World Ends With You, Another Code, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective* (If I would play any of these I would do it on Switch to be honest, the first two are Rpgs and the latter two are puzzle/adventure games. Another Code will release in January) Next, the core RPG DS games that I have been looking for quite a while: *Soma Bringer, Lunar Knights, Glory of Heracles, Fossil Fighters* (I don't know much about these games other than Lunar Knights have ties with Megaman Star Force and Fossil Fighters is a Pokemon-Like game, they seem to be good games by the looks) Lastly, the miscellanious ones that I found: *Okamiden, Custom Robo Arena, Drawn to Life games, Monster Rancher DS* (Okamiden is the sequel of the high aclaimed Okami game that I never played but it looks really cool, Drawn to Life and its sequel are said to have one of the most tragic game stories and the others are Develop and Fighting games that have Pokemon-like elements as well) Thats a lot right? Maybe some of these games will interest you, like some of them do for me.
Wow!! This is so awesome. Thank you so much. I have played DQ9 and absolutely adore it. if it's an RPG with a class system and weird unlock methods for those classes then I am all in. I've always wanted to jump into the Professor Layton series proper, but just never took the plunge yet for some reason. I added The Last Specter to my backlog list over on backloggd.com so I hope to get to that next year. I was looking to add Star Force, which is a subseries I didn't even know existed despite played over 20+ MegaMan games, but there seem to be a ton of Star Force titles. Any particular one I should go with? I just looked at DQ Monsters and it looks super cute and fun. Will definitely wanna play that one. TWEWY is a game that I have played before and is probably top 3 DS games for me so far. Quick story, years ago when it first came out I somehow stumbled upon some of its music online. Specifically Calling and Twister were the exact songs I remember hearing. I liked the songs so much that I got up, went to a local Gamestop and bought the game right away and fell in love. I never finished Another Code, called Trace Memory in the US here, but I played it at a friends house years ago because he didn't like the game and I thought I'd try it. I LOVED it and am SUPER excited for the remakes coming out. Ghost Trick has been on my list for YEARS and I really need to just play it. Thanks for reminding me! I remember playing a small portion of Okamiden but I honestly don't remember anything of it so I should try that again because Okami is wonderful. Never played any of the Custom Robo's but they look fun. I'll definitely add this one too. I've never heard of Drawn to Life but it looks super creative. Also adding that! Monster Rancher as well. Thank you SOO much for putting so much effort into this. I really appreciate it. Hopefully we both find some awesome games from this.
@@Zerbraxi You're welcome my guy, the DS library sure is very intriguing, I dare say that it might be better than the Gamecube and the Wii, but I can't say for certain. Answering you about Star Force, I went with the first game and the Leo Version. The version you choose you will not matter until very late in the game and all that does is changing a battle transformation, items and a boss, so you can go with whatever version you want, but start with Star Force 1 like me (I haven't played the other games yet), the beginning of the game is somewhat slow but it becomes very satisfying not too long after. Also I saw people commenting about the core Sonic games, but a very hidden gem that I recommend is Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games, it is a minigame collection sure, but it has a very cool adventure mode where we play as Mario and Sonic and travel the islands, gather their friends and do unique challenges, I really like that game. Overall, thanks for commenting about that huge list I made, those games really got me very curious when I looked them and I hope the you find a lot of good games to play and have Happy Holidays!
Why are we still here? Just to suffer? What is this meaningless drama for? However, star fox command is a vivid example of a promising idea that was implemented in a mockingly bad way. Still, star fox zero won't get any better, but that's a story for another day.
The good news: I have, in fact, played DQ9 and it's absolutely nuts. Semi good semi bad news: I've played a good chunk of Dawn of Sorrow, but unfortunately never finished it. Bad News: I own Portrait of Ruin but never played it and have never played, owned, or even seen a physical copy of Order of Ecclesia. I hope to play through the GBA games for a video at some point and will probably move to the DS games after that.
So let’s be real here people didn’t like assault because it innovated and gave us a brand-new story with improved R wing Controls were giving us some summer good on foot ground controls that was also in the original Starfox 64 I mind you while halving the best narrative Then you got star fox command which critics like this despite the fact that majority of the game is motion controls for no reason, despite the fact that the DS has a fucking buttons and not to mention the fact that the story and the branching paths in this game are absolutely atrocious granted the original Starfox and Starfox 64 also had branching paths, but the difference between those games and command is that both 64 and the original had to pass you could take, but the story would say the exact same command on the other hand set up a story and yeah, there’s a possibility that the ending you get has nothing to do with the story
Not 5 minutes in and this man is bashing Spirit Tracks? I thought Phantom Hourglass was the low hanging fruit, can we just stick with that, leave my baby alone? Anyways, "Trim the fat" sounds about right, and repetition is a part of that. My first impression of the game was "Why is every single level a fog of war mission on a time limit with a risk of instant failure?" That literally never went away because, well, EVERY SINGLE LEVEL is a fog of war mission on a time limit with a risk of instant failure. The missiles and motherships weren't fun for me the first time, why would they be the 56th? It reminds me of Metroid Prime Hunters where you fight the same 2 already tedious bosses 4 times each. Leon is now my greatest enemy. I feel like he was specifically designed to be as bad as possible within the rules of the game. I mean what's the point of having the highest health if you can't destroy the missile before it reaches the Great Fox or the time limit runs out? It's fascinating really, the final Star Wolf mission has such a diverse range of playstyles. I would've loved it more if I could treat Leon's bad playstyle like bad units in a Fire Emblem title. Just that little bit extra support you know? Unfortunately Command isn't built like that. I need Leon to be good because Wolf can't be everywhere at once. I can't fix the story in a rant that took me a couple minutes to type, but for gameplay, my thoughts are: Give the Great Fox hit points. Say, 3. A missile deals 2 damage each, enemies deal 1 per turn. Replace some motherships with a simple pyramid base to shoot like the building already on the map, just to have less motherships, and stop making them oneshot you. And hey look at that, it's now similar to Star Fox 2 with a home base that can take a hit, different base types, and no oneshots. Restrict time limits and fog of war to some maps, not literally every map. Also make the arwing invincible for a couple seconds at the start of a battle because enemies can spawn into you. I really do hope the devs of Command are doing well. They seem like good people and I would still trust them with another Star Fox title. I just want the criticism to be understood, with respect. Oh, and regarding Krystal. All I can say for liking her is she's as good in Assault as any of the others in Star Fox 64. I agree with everything said against her. It's just that she fits so naturally with the team, and saying "she'd fit right in as a member of Team Star Fox in Lylat Wars" is some of the best praise I can give a character in anything. She isn't treated differently from Falco or Slippy for better or worse, and that's cool.
LOL, bagging on Spirit Tracks is one of my 3 hobbies in life. I'm a very exciting person. Ya Leon is such a fun playstyle but functionally, is pretty weak and unusable in most occasions. However, shout out to Panther for actually being completely nuts! I appreciate the effort you put into trying to fix some of the issues that we both seem to share with Command. However, I think at some point it's more fruitful to just take a step back and ask if the core concept itself is genuinely good or not. It might've sounded fun, and to be fair some people do legit enjoy Command, but personally I wonder if even my attempts to improve Command is just doing my best to work with what I have rather than just redesign from the ground up which is probably what is needed. I'm so glad you made this comment about the devs. It's super important to remember that not every idea is good and not every piece of art is entertaining, but the passion and drive behind that creative process is critical and it often takes a ton of mistakes and failures in order to make something truly special. I think it's important as the customer that we criticize effectively while still cultivating the benefits of the creative process. I guess I never looked at Krystal quite like that. It's a good point.
@@Zerbraxi My thinking with the core gameplay is it's inspired by Star Fox 2 (as is Zero but that's for another day). I love Star Fox 2, but I also love Metroid 2 so take that how you will (except the Gammas, too many gamma metroids). Command is like bite-sized maps of SF2 without the "dungeons".
I've been called a lot of things in life but funny and entertaining are usually near the bottom of the list. "Won't shut up about things I don't care about" is usually what I hear the most lol.
Star Fox Assault is my all-time favorite Star Fox game, so naturally I wanted to see what the next game in the series is, & I googled it, & all I was getting was that Command is one if not the worst Star Fox game ever made, thus making it the biggest down grade in video gaming history. To this day I have still never played it, I've watched video after video, complaint after complaint, & retrospective after retrospective on it, & they're all the same... garbage, Command is garbage.
Except it does still have some great moments. It's easily my last favorite of what I've covered for sure, but I really meant it during the times I said I was having fun in the video. There were legit like 3 or so paths where I genuinely had a good time
Star Fox Command is the Zelda 2 of the Star Fox franchise.
I will not explain further.
Does that mean that eventually there will be an aggressive resurgence of love for this game in another 10 years or so like Zelda 2 is currently having?
@@Zerbraxi And possibly a randomizer!

The Marcus ending is indeed the best ending
I'm torn between that one or the final ending I got.
18:38 so wait, slippy's gf....whose presumably a frog......makes a killer ship that resembles one of their newborn children? A....tadpool?
Today we find out that Slippy and Amanda are THOSE types of parents.
‘Lol non of it is canon as this isn’t the same timeline as the original games’ that… that’s such a lazy cop out
Ya....what a waste...
@@Zerbraxi at least with zero it makes sense being a retelling of 64
Honestly I rather command not be cannon he’ll I’d even take star fox guard being more cannon then command 💀
interesting enough Imamura just confirmed this month the Marcus ending was indeed intended to be the canon ending.
Oh I didn't know that last part. That's really neat.
Marcus ending really does make the most sense.
@@Zerbraxi Yeah I agree.
by the way will you be eventually doing videos on Zero and hopefully Starlink?
I was almost convinced there really was rain out that window, but then you removed the filter and I laughed. Nice implementation and timing.
LOL!! I'm glad it worked out.
I really tried liking this game when it came out. The constant jumping in and out of tiny battles drove me crazy, just way too repetitive. Thanks for taking one for the team to make this video!
Anything for you :)
I think the most shocking thing about hearing a critique of star fox command is finding that people care about star fox writing or continuity
I probably wouldn't care if they didn't create a continuity to follow, only to kinda just tease around it for so long. I can't say I care THAT strongly, but if they want to make a canon across the games then I'll naturally be invested in that to some degree.
You deserve way more views man. You're right up there with Scot the Woz, as far as I'm concerned. Thoroughly entertaining. Keep up the great work!
That's insanely kind of you. Seriously, thank you so much for the kind words. I hope you like what I still have coming.
As a kid who LOVED the 64 game, being able to play something like it on a portable was a dream come true, and I loved this game even with all its flaws. Great job with the retrospective!
Thank you so much!
Dang, the slap had some force behind it. Shows some commitment to the joke. (Or someone had some bottled up anger 😉)
Probably the bottled up anger LOL! Unfortunately...it also took more than 1 take :(
If you go an search interviews from imumura, the writter and artist of the series.
It's just so annoying, it doesn't help that command has written the series into a corner with no way out
People! get this man more subs.
I also started to change strategy quite a bit as I learned more and more. It has a deeper level of gameplay than it would first appear
Wtf that shot of you at the window is so good??!!!
Ohh?! Should've actually cried though.
I hope you find something you enjoy. I'm with ya on the Switch . Maybe next console 🤞
Krystal is literally just hoeing around at this point. She heard Panther's theme and went "gahddamn"
To be fair....so did I
In retrospect, if any of the endings were canon, it could have left the series on an unresolved cliffhanger, much like Sly Cooper and Mega Man have been.
I think there are a couple that were a pretty good, start -> finish and wrapped up. I think those would've worked fine.
Though ya, something like Sly would've sucked.
@Zerbraxi There was going to be a dlc to wrap up that cliffhanger ending in Sly 4, but was cancelled due to low sales.
That can't be taken away from it.
one thing about this game : the music's pretty good.
True point
Thank you for sharing your own experiences and thank you for watching. It always means a lot to me
One of the fun games I enjoyed playing on my DS is Brothers and Arms DS. 3rd person shooter with doom like graphics.
I usually play this game while watching Band of brothers.
I know of Brothers and Arms but haven't played one. Maybe I'll give that a shot

But for me personally, the ending with Fox and Krystal's son is the most excellent of all 9^^"
Ya the ending with Marcus and the "new" Star Fox is definitely a contender for the best of the 9.
@@Zerbraxi Of Course!
Nice retrospective. I didn't like the stylus controls or the time-limited action, but I really liked the unique ship designs and character roster.
The ship designs especially were really cool. They got very creative.

@@ViewtifulBeau Thank you for watching them. I hope you like :)
You already sort of have the Star Fox team breaking up already in adventures. Sure, it didn't break up completely, but Falco was gone and everything was run down. Honestly, this game felt like they decided that what Fox really needed was Peter Parker's luck.
I think I levied a similar criticism at Star Fox Adventures actually where Falco's absence was exclusive to a manga of all things.
I loved this game growing up, warts and all.
I remember completely dunking on people in the multiplayer. Good times
I'm glad you didn't play against me then cuz I probably would've been stomped lol

It's a pretty divisive game but it definitely has a ton of fans and it can be a really fun time.
We better check up on whoever wrote up these endings. He was definitely in some dark place in life if they're all this depressing.
For real. I hope his life got better
People are way too hard on Star Fox Command. Unlike the other SF games, it's a fantastic sleep aid.
Omg I'm at a coffee shop and actually almost spit out my drink laughing at "sleep aid" LOL 😆
I've never heard of that. I'll look into it.
Gamewise, I enjoyed playing the game, story wise, what the hell were they thinking?
We all mistakes in life. Others make big mistakes.
The best ending is the one where I turn off the game and play Star Fox 64 instead.
The actual true ending lol
This is the one Star Fox game I have not played and will never play (I can't deal with touchscreen controls) It looks better than I expected, but the repetition and gameplay doesn't seem that great.

Well if you want another DS game about anthro characters piloting vehicles try (download because it's expensive) Solatorobo.
Any of the three Castlevania games are great, moreso Portrait of Ruin, and Ecclesia
Dragon Quest Rocket Slime is extremely unique and fun while having a great sense of humor

Super late to this video for giving any recommendations, BUT...
I've never heard of this! Definitely will look into it. Thank you for sharing
Great review man as for me I couldn’t get into Star fox command to tell you the truth growing up, mostly because it felt like a mess of a story that made no whatsoever at least in my opinion.
Oh, you probably felt that way because it's a mess of a story that makes no sense whatsoever. Your younger self was spot on.
@@Zerbraxi thank you and honestly to tell you the truth as a huge fan of Star fox assault story and the characters Especially with fox and Crystal it really felt like they threw away this great story for nonsense which made no sense whatsoever at least in my opinion.
The fact none of it is even canon just makes it feel like such a waste of time too. It's like a double insult.
We need starfox 64 maker.

@@Zerbraxi Been binging your Star Fox videos while I drew and your energy's making me wanna check out your other content.
@@AzureXEyes64 I wish I had the Zero and side game video already done for you. Hopefully soon!
@@Zerbraxi Oh AWESOME!
The writing as a whole is incredibly hot or miss. It's a real bummer
"None of Them", what an ending.
And what an interesting game, seems like they threw a lot of ideas at it with incredibly mixed success.
Shameful that the translation is that bad, along with the pacing of the game and ending tree.
It has so much potential but ugh...I wish it was better. Oh well...it happens. At least some parts were really fun!
3:14 I highly recommend the remakes of Dragon Quest 4,5, and 6. As well as The World Ends With You.

Sonic rush adventure is pretty good
Second person on this video who recommended Sonic Rush Adventure. I've always wanted to get to the Sonic DS games and that interest is only growing now.
@Zerbraxi it's the only sonic game with consistently good boss fights
I guess i like the Star Fox games people hate. I was really digging this one when it came out... but by the 5th play through i was like "okay, imma just gonna google the endings now" 😂. And i really like Zero, it may even be my favorite. Although, it did take like 2 and half playthroughs before the controls clicked. Thats.. thats way too long and i can understand why people gave up on it immediately.
Well I still have Zero next on the list. Let's see if we align at all 😀
So, about James appearing on Venom, there is dialogue on the fifth turn if you didn't take out all the targets yet. Just thought I'd point that out. It doesn't play when you take out all the targets before he appears.
ua-cam.com/video/zhnrgfdOeEY/v-deo.html
From 2:43:27 to 2:43:47 in that video.
I'm pretty sure the left arrow on my d-pad lost years of life from playing this game.
Star fox zero is left to go.
I wonder how long I can avoid it before people get suspicious.
You can't avoid Zero forever. It's the last game in this star fox retrospective. People will notice if you skip it. And oh, remember, the game has a button you can press to swap what screen shows the normal and cockpit view.@@Zerbraxi
I really hope I don't forget about that button...
It's the minus button.@@Zerbraxi
Are you gonna do a video on Star Fox zero?
Absolutely! It's taking a little bit because I want to do a bit more with it which is why I've done some other videos in the meantime. There's a lot surrounding Zero . I also really want to cover the Sin and Punishment games before it as well, mostly because I think there is a ton to discuss between Star Successor and Star Fox Zero
Tldr, it's coming but it's gonna take a bit longer than normal
Star fox 2’s framework just seems so much more fun, no nonsense story to interrupt everything. God, if only that game ran at a smooth, even just 20 fps…
I really think they struck something special with Star Fox 2. It just didn't function well enough for the time. To think about that game made in a modern design, taking advantage of the Arwing play, the strategy, and basically roguelite mechanics, I think there's something really great there. Add in the extra characters and upgrades along the way, expand the scope slightly and it's the groundwork for a Star Fox that would genuinely excite me. And it's not far off 2
You make a star fox video me a fan of the series: (GASP) IM UP IM UP
38:02 I also used this ending in my au
Lol!! Still a couple videos to go still so hope you can stick around 😀
@@Zerbraxiyou should make a video on the amount of fan content
@@Gamerbropart2 Might you mean perhaps like Star Fox Virtual Boy, Grounded, Event Horizon, EX, Conquest, Revolution, Remadventures or the upcoming EX Zodiac?
I have some ideas :)
So Zerbraxi, it seems I do care enough about you to the point of looking through all the Nintendo DS library to see if there are notable games to recommend to you and maybe find something I would be interested in as well.
Firstly, the DS games I been playing or had played:
*Professor Layton The Last Specter, Megaman Star Force, Dragon Quest IX*
(Last Specter is a really great point and click puzzle game that its very fun, Megaman Star Force is an awesome Rpg, with a cool story and characters and I love playing it and Dragon Quest was cool at first, but sooner the game became tedious and I dropped)
Second, the DS games that have versions/sequels on Switch:
*Dragon Quest Monsters Joker, The World Ends With You, Another Code, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective*
(If I would play any of these I would do it on Switch to be honest, the first two are Rpgs and the latter two are puzzle/adventure games. Another Code will release in January)
Next, the core RPG DS games that I have been looking for quite a while:
*Soma Bringer, Lunar Knights, Glory of Heracles, Fossil Fighters*
(I don't know much about these games other than Lunar Knights have ties with Megaman Star Force and Fossil Fighters is a Pokemon-Like game, they seem to be good games by the looks)
Lastly, the miscellanious ones that I found:
*Okamiden, Custom Robo Arena, Drawn to Life games, Monster Rancher DS*
(Okamiden is the sequel of the high aclaimed Okami game that I never played but it looks really cool, Drawn to Life and its sequel are said to have one of the most tragic game stories and the others are Develop and Fighting games that have Pokemon-like elements as well)
Thats a lot right?
A story I hope to tackle this year, but I'm honestly pushing it off a little lol
@@Zerbraxi This story is guaranteed to be up to no good, so maybe it's for the best...
17:00 wasn't he originally a member of star wolf? My bad, I thought that was a pig
Yeah he was in 64.
Oh your edit mightve caught this.
Between Paper Mario and Star Fox, Overlord Miyamoto surely can miss the point of a franchise really hard, huh
Ya, there's definitely a pretty harsh contrast to "creators vision " and "players expectation " sometimes
Is it bad that I liked the F zero ending? Because I liked the F zero ending 😅
Maybe it's just our deep desire for another mainline F-Zero game that we know isn't gonna happen for at least another 10 years lol
@@Zerbraxi thats very true, I saw that ending about 16 years ago as well. So its been a long wait
DS GAME RECOMMENDATION: Dragon Quest: Sentinels of the Starry Sky
Also all 3 DS Castlevanias kthxbye
The good news: I have, in fact, played DQ9 and it's absolutely nuts.
Semi good semi bad news: I've played a good chunk of Dawn of Sorrow, but unfortunately never finished it.
Bad News: I own Portrait of Ruin but never played it and have never played, owned, or even seen a physical copy of Order of Ecclesia.
I hope to play through the GBA games for a video at some point and will probably move to the DS games after that.
play fossil fighters on ds and elite beat agents
Just looked at these and Elite Beat Agents I wanna play so bad now!!!
So let’s be real here people didn’t like assault because it innovated and gave us a brand-new story with improved R wing Controls were giving us some summer good on foot ground controls that was also in the original Starfox 64 I mind you while halving the best narrative
Then you got star fox command which critics like this despite the fact that majority of the game is motion controls for no reason, despite the fact that the DS has a fucking buttons and not to mention the fact that the story and the branching paths in this game are absolutely atrocious granted the original Starfox and Starfox 64 also had branching paths, but the difference between those games and command is that both 64 and the original had to pass you could take, but the story would say the exact same command on the other hand set up a story and yeah, there’s a possibility that the ending you get has nothing to do with the story
The feelings on Assault and Command are always so all over the place. It definitely makes covering Zero eventually pretty intimidating.
No idea what Star Fox or a D S is, but youre cute
Shucks!!!
Guh, not this guy again. Not this funny and entertaining creator again.
Also i un-ironically love spirit tracks....dude its got trains. TRAINS MAN!
I've been called a lot of things in life but funny and entertaining are usually near the bottom of the list. "Won't shut up about things I don't care about" is usually what I hear the most lol.
There is no war in Ba-Sing-Se.
@@Zerbraxi To be fair they might not have the almighty power to mute you like I do
@@thepixeltavern Please don't do it!! I'll be good!
