amazing that a song done almost 50 years ago.. is still relevant as this is.
He grew up in a very poor family .He. never forgot his roots .Love Elvis!
I live in Detroit and this song was relevant in the 70's and it's STILL relevant today! Nothing changes if nothing changes!
Nothing ever changes.
That song was very popular when Elvis first released it. We were struck by the honesty of it.
I was a teenage and watched Evis from his first Ed Sullivan Show. BUT I disagree about this song being popular when it was released. I never heard it until way after his death.
Such a powerful song. An extremely wonderful heartfelt version. A precious message with hard line truth. He was an extremely poor boy himself. Yes Whiney Houston's mom Cissy was a back up singer for Elvis. She absolutely loved his talents.
It is💯🙂
I cry everytime I hear that song
Marla Hudgins Yea this song is too real.
This is why he is the KING.
It doesn't get any better than this, I have EVERY thing Elvis recorded and still have 100 LPs of his that have never been played.
I am 70 now and my love for this guy has never faulted. RIP ELVIS gone but NEVER forgotten
Really? Oh thats amazing and i love it🙂💜
In my opinion watching MANY REACTIONS to this particular song I strongly believe every radio station should rerelease it by Elvis Presley. 💖👌 Love your reactions. Bless you dear.
I'm soooo glad you mentioned his back-up singers...wow, their sound felt like the cries of the moms who have lived those lyrics...
"In the Ghetto" (originally titled "The Vicious Circle") is a 1969 song recorded by Elvis Presley written by Mac Davis. It was a major comeback hit released in 1969 as a 45 rpm single with "Any Day Now" as the flip side. It is a narrative of generational poverty: A boy is born to a mother who already has more children than she can feed in the ghetto of Chicago. The boy grows up hungry, steals and fights, purchases a gun and steals a car, attempts to run, but is shot and killed. The song ends with another child being born in the ghetto, and implies that the newborn could meet the same fate, continuing the cycle of poverty and violence. The feeling of an inescapable circle is created by the structure of the song, with its simple, stark phrasing; by the repetition of the phrase "in the ghetto" as the close of every fourth line; and finally by the repetition of the first verse's "and his mama cries" just before the beginning and as the close of the last verse. It is played in the key of B flat.
@t
Very deep😥
This is a song I’ve known about for a long time. Besides the importance of the message, what is so beautiful about this song it is that, it is not judgmental against the mother or against the baby boy, who was born into a terrible circumstance. The writer of this song tells us that the young baby IS going to be angry someday, (prophetic), that is if he does not get a helping hand from you and me seeing this unending circle. That is said when he is just a baby, innocent. Here is the judgment in this song, “Take a look at you and me, or are we too blind to see. Or do we simply turn our heads and look the other wayyyyy. While the world turns.” The judgment is strong and profound. A judgment and plea to address this vicious circle.
Then the young boy, 10, 11, 12 or maybe a young teen, finds himself playing in the street. There is no park for him, no after school programs for him. So maybe he meets up with the wrong crowd. I don’t know for sure. But the anger mentioned in the beginning of the song inevitably happens. He gets a gun. ‘In desperation” the young man steals a car. Then like the news we all too often here today, a young man is killed by the police, lying face-down in the street.
Today we see it as police violence and so often it is. But before the angry young man lies face down on the street, when he was an innocent kid, did we take a look at you and me and lend a helping hand to improve his lot in life. Or were we to blind to see. I have enjoyed all the reaction videos to this great song by Mac Davis, the Elvis chose to do because he wanted to do a song that was socially relevant.
These are just some of the thoughts of a 62-year-old white male from Long Island, New York, now living just south of Raleigh, North Carolina,
With all respect
Dennis
Thank you for this..Elvis preached in songs much social commentary appropriate for that time & still for today...a poor kid from Topelo, Miss..hung out with blues & gospel singers & brought that to the world wide stage...he had a tremendous passion for the poor..He was a Christian navigating through this world of pain...listen to "if I Could Dream"...
This song has made me cry since I was a kid.
Patch it up is a great song by Elvis
Elvis grew up in a Tupelo, Mississippi ghetto; Dad, Vern, was in jail for bad checks. He sang in church...Gospel was his first love...he sang "That's All Right, Mama" in 1954, when a teenager for his Mother's birthday, at Sun Records. He was a Spec 4 in the Army, got out in 2 years. Released "Heartbreak Hotel" in 1956 to a massive amount of controversy from religious groups because of his movements. He made a string of musical romance movies, that he didn't want to do. Finally got a decent script for "King Creole", his only b&w movie. He just wanted to make music. His singing career took a dip when his wife left him, and the Beatles arrived, his "Comeback Tour" helped immensely. When he sang "In the Ghetto", which his manager thought would kill his career, he fought to sing it, (it was written by Mac Davis) and here we are...as relevent, and often played, today as it was in 1969, when it was released. His backup singers were The Sweet Inspirations, which included Cissy Houston, mother of the great Whitney Houston. Thank you for your great reaction.
I love Elvis! My grandfather was part of a band (The Jourdans) who at one time sang back-up for Elvis Presley. While I am still awaiting more reactions to Keith Urban, some of Elvis's best songs that I love are "Don't Cry Daddy", "Crying in the Chapel", "Can't Help falling in Love with You", "Memories", "Don't Be Cruel", "It's Now or Never", "Suspicious Minds" (live), "You've Lost that Loving feeling" (Live) and "Jailhouse Rock". The reason why I asked for the live versions on a couple of these is because in Elvis's 1970s concert (which is what this video is from) he often goofed around on stage (ab-libbing or playing around with the background singers). He had no problem just saying or doing whatever was on his mind at the time. Makes for some of the best memories and laughs.
Really? You must have heard stories🙂 more Keith coming this week, and thanks for the requests🙂
@@keziah2559 i look forward to those reactions. And yes. I have heard many stories. My grandfather didnt have a single bad thing to say about Elvis. But they both shared a great since of humor and would often joke back and forth durring rehearsals. My grandfather used to say Elvis was the funniest man hed ever known. Turns out Elvis had the same opinion about my grandfather. Another fun fact: my grandfather was on my dads side. But we found out about twenty years after Elvis died that my mother was actually a distant cuz of Elvis. So I guess Im tied to that man in more ways than one
Wow, thats amazing🙂
Then your gran father is very famous. They was the biggest ever
Ah, cut the guy a break -- maybe he's just dyslexic
Mesmerizing isn’t he. He could tell a story with a song. LIKEE NO OTHER. when he was starting out they ask him. Who do you sound like. He said. I don’t sound like NOBODY. Your reaction said it all. No one could match More Elvis girl
Gorgeous reaction. So happy you had the chance to listen to such an amazing performance.
Thank you🙂💜
As a black man 😎 i honestly love that man
Elvis may have been white but he loved this song because he grew up dirt poor in Mississippi and surely could relate to these issues Listen to More Elvis you'll never be disappointed one of the greatest entertainers if not the greatest entertainer that ever lived
At one time, one of Elvis' backup singers was Whitney Houston's mom Cissy.
Really? Wow🤯
@@keziah2559 that's true
He was very loyal and good to his band and backup singers and they loved and respected him.
@@keziah2559 Yep. The group was called "The Sweet Inspirations". Here is Whitney Houston talking about meeting Elvis when she was a kid because of her mom:

@@keziah2559 Back in the 60's, a promoter of an Elvis show (Elvis had a show, not just a concert), told Elvis not to bring his black back-up singers. Elvis said "They don't come, I don't come." So, of couse, they all came; you didn't say no to Elvis.
👌👍👏 reaction

Thank you for this reaction video, this is one of my favorites of his. So powerful and still so relevant all these years later!
Your welcome🙂
Elvis on tour 1972 Proud Mary and the best ever recorded version of Bridge over troubled water , both electric!
Of course the King. Funny to see. King of voice and look and carisma. This dude had it All. Maybe thats why he is the most famous person still
. .listen to the power in the voices of his singers, the Sweet Inspiration ,…their falsetto rises where his voice drifts around them . ,a beautiful anthem written by Mac Davis that takes poverty seriously and cradles the child of the ghetto with love and conscience . ,✨🌱
Love Elvis ! Just got back from Graceland in Memphis . Awesome ! Try " Susupicious Minds " by Elvis. Great song.
Elvis himself lived this song.he grew up very poor, he lived in the ghetto in low income housing, his parents were very poor.he had a lot of black friends, he would go down on Beal street in Memphis when he was in his early twenties and listen to a lot of famous black people sing.he had black backup singers, his favorite cook was black,..he was at a Cadillac sales room and saw a black lady and her son looking through the showroom window, he sent someone out to get them and bought her and her son a caddy right there on the spot.. he also had a beautiful daughter by a black lady.. just search for elvis Presley black daughter.you know we all get cut ,we all bleed red blood so elvis realized the color of our skin means nothing.AMEN! It's what's inside that counts.GOD bless you and thank you for playing elvis.😇😇😇
Really, i heard he had it rough but sometimes thats how some of the best music comes from struggle, pain but i cant believe he had a black daughter so what happened to her? As you said had but i will look her up🙂 God bless to you too🙏🏾🙂💜
Elvis grew up in the ghetto, that's why he sang this song, he spoke to everyone.
You are picking some proper belters lately.. this song ALWAYS makes me shed a tear
Whitneys mom Sissiy Houston loved Elvis, he refused to play in clubs that did not want the black backing singers in ..... he wanted to record this song while the record company did not want it as it was so controversial ..... he truly was the King
Elvis had to fight to keep his backup singers. At the time many concert halls and hotels wouldn't let them stay there. He had to say if they don't stay I don't stay. If they can't sing in you concert hall I don't sing.
Oh was it?
@Brett Stanton actually it happened in Houston TX
@@keziah2559 This is what happened in Houston TX, as told by one of the girls, Myrna Smith

Another great icon and a wonderful song, all time favorite.. thank you 😉
Your welcome🙂
So many good about Elvis Like Aloha from Hawaii n last Vegas Concert✌️
There are very few songs that affect me to the point of making me misty eyed, this one and for some reason What A Wonderful World does.
ELVIS ALWAYS NUMBER ONE FOR Me No COMES CLOSE
My Grandma loved Elvis Presley.
my dad did. and so do i
Now I feel really old lol
amazing song 4 the time
The song even hits home today
In 3 hall of fames ; gospel, rock'n roll and country !!
If I Can Dream from the 68 comeback special! It's another great one! The King kills it! Do the one where he's wearing a white suit.
I grew up in a fatherless home that would probably be described as lower
class with my mom and grandparents and ended up in Beverly Hills
totally surrounded by affluence, power, grace, philanthropy, and
opportunity. I count the biggest stars and athletes in the world as
personal friends. I don't say this to impress, just that I've seen the
bottom, top, and everything in between. All during my childhood.
This has been one of my favorite songs since it was released. I have
always known exactly what it was about, and I nearly always cry while
listening, as I just did. Why? A lot of reasons but I would say the two
that stick out are: 1) The message is so fucking simple. This song is
"Man In The Mirror V.1" We are all the same. We are one, and we got to
love and help each other. And 2) That shithole called Chicago, where my
pathetic, physically abusive and emotionally absent father was born, is
the same despicable, money-laundering, crime-infested, go nowhere-fast
place Elvis sang about 50 years ago. It is a Democrat-controlled
national embarrassment where innocent and not-so innocent lives are
thrown away hourly.
A lifetime is all about four things: Empathy, Intent, Unity &
Compassion.None of those things come in colors. You care about
everybody the same. Group-think is a lie, a joke. You treat everybody
the same. Or you are a racist piece of shit. You think "these people"
are a certain way, that's all you need to know
that are fucked up and need to make wholesale changes in the way you
look at Life.
God bless and take care of each other.
Wow, i love your comment, same mindset as mine, we are all the same no matter what colour or status and we should all help each other💯 you were lucky to see all sides of the coin rich and poor as alot dont get to at all and as for your father, reading about your reminded me of mine, never really had a relationship with mine and he always used to beat me good or bad to the point i didnt even know how to be around my own father and would just tread on egg shells constantly at such a young age too as he passed when i was 11 years old and its sad to say but his death didnt effect me the way i thought it would, my mother was everything to me i even learnt of how my father mistreated my mother many years later😥 thank you for your wonderful comment😊💜
@@keziah2559 -
"Treadin' on egg shells" with your father...Sorry to hear that. Man, can I relate! My dad ended up committing suicide. Besides thinking about that every day, when he appears in my dreams (at night) I''m always on-edge waiting for the other shoe to drop. I don't remember having a dream with him in it my whole life (44 yrs) before he killed himself.
They say what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger.
I'm strong enough, how about you?
God bless and thanks for your kind words.
Your very right, it makes us stronger💪🏾💪🏾 i hope your mind can be at ease and free of the dreams, your welcome and thank you😊💜
Elvis Presley was the best singer and Entertainer there ever was he sung w love a compassion for people he grew up poor a even after he got wealthy he never changed he was still poor at heart a felt very different a Lonely.
Still the biggest selling artist of all time, close to 1.5 billion albums sold. Not bad for a man who didn't get to tour outside of his own country and has been dead for 42 years.
I know, tell me about it😊💜
I ❤ how U never paused the video & played it all the way through ! Good for U ! 😊💪👊
Thank you😊💜
Written by Mac Davis for Elvis. You might also enjoy Suspicious Minds by Elvis. He acted in something like 38 movies. My favorite Elvis movie is Flaming Star( i think thats right)
The man who wrote the song is Mac Davis, a very good songwriter and he has a story behind the song, of course and it's actually on UA-cam.
Elvis grew up in a neighborhood where his family was only one of two families that were white. Also when elvis was sick with a fever and almost died the black neighbor lady gave him mouth to mouth resescitation and saved him . He is a man for everyone. Compassionate.
Dd
Wow
Love your reaction.
Nothing have change until the politicians change. They rule the cities, specially the black neighborhood who keep voting for the same party. This song really brake my heart. It's so true.
*Whitney Houston's mother Cissy Houston, was one of Elvis Presley's backup singers!*
There’s Pink Floyd, before them was Elvis Presley a true pioneer in music. Many bands were influenced by him. Kentucky Rain is my favorite. Also the album version of In the Ghetto is slower and actually paints the picture with more emotion. I prefer album versions but live performances do show the true artists ability to perform and entertain.
Thanj you🙂
Amazing song!! Your reaction was beautiful when each verse hit you.
Thank you😊
You can see from his expression that he can relate to this song, struggling to contain his emotions. He was born into poverty. He had a twin that didn't make it due to infant mortality.
I did learn that about him😥
And his dad was framed for something and Went to prison and he would dream about breaking him out because he know his dad diden’t do it
here's a list of Elvis songs you should react to.
-Burning Love
-Heartbreak Hotel
-Jailhouse Rock
-King Creole
-Return To Sender
-Good Luck Charm
Thank you🙂
Should have given her another one from 1969 like Suspicious Minds , those session were by far his best work.
Please react to if I can dream 68 !!!
I have not seen a live performance as passionate as Elvis performing that Song, he truly meant every word in that.
Cant believe if somebody doing reactions dont know or ever heard of Elvis Presley is a shame.Elvis is America. .
heartbreaking song.
The backing group were the sweet inspirations and one of of them was Whitney Houston's mother
Please react to American Trilogy Aloha from Hawaii, it's such a deep meaningful song.
I Love Elvis...he was the most beautiful man ever to walk the face. You can pick any Elvis song and it will be amazing... my favorite is Kentucky Rain but his music spaned two decades so maybe some older and then his later stuff.

Blue suade shoes
Love me tender
Suspicious minds

Mac Davis wrote this song and Elvis ended up with the song perfect match.
You should try out his daughter Lisa Marie Presley's music, 'You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet' is amazing!!
Cool i will check it out🙂
The sweet inspirations were his background singers on this Whitney Houston's mother was one of the members. Mac Davis was the writer of this & the story behind the song was this was what happened to a childhood friend who made bad choices and lost his life to those choices
I heard about Whitneys mother and so sad😢
Thank you for sharing. ✌

I have done that one already, its up on my channel🙂
Loved your reaction!
Please react to Elvis singing Polk Salad Annie!!!
Thank you!
Thank you😊💜 will check it out🙂
I am DISGUSTED when people call this man a racist. Another touching song to the black community is Elvis’ rendition of “If I can dream” which he ended his 1968 Comeback Special with. What people don’t tell you is that song was INSISTED UPON by Elvis for the closing song because MLK had just been assassinated in Memphis and RFK as well, champions of Civil Rights and Elvis dedicated that song to them.
Also Muhammad Ali: spoke at Elvis’ memorial service saying Elvis was his best friend. And “Elvis was the nicest man you’d want to know”
James Brown: “Elvis? Elvis is my soul brother man, I thank God for everything he’s done for me. If there were empty seats at my shows when I was just starting he would buy out the empty seats. He was such a good man”
Chuck Berry: “Describe Elvis?? He’s the greatest there ever was, is, or will be.”
Whitney Houston’s mother, Cissy was one of “The Sweet Inspirations” that sang with Elvis all throughout the 70s described Elvis as “The kindest, most beautiful, charismatic, person ever”
And much more..
Thank you for your heart felt comment i really appreciate it😊💜 i did react to "If i can dream" such a beautiful song you can check it out here m.ua-cam.com/video/LRwf5AkYSLA/v-deo.html
The slower studio version in my view is much better ,but to me Elvis can do no wrong
Please watch " steamroller blues" by elvis presley 1973
Believe it or not, Elvis took some heat from Jesse Jackson for recording this song. He (and Al Sharpton, I believe), didn't think that I white man should sing that song.
Did you listen to Suspicious Minds, Polk Salad Annie, American Trilogy n Fever to name a few. He said over 400 songs He also sang gospel songs n got 3 Emmys for gospel.
Another great one is poke salad annie
When u stare in the screen i feel like batwoman is looking right at my soul
There's a story when Elvis showed up for a concert and was told his black back up singers and band members couldn't be on stage. Well he said fine but I won't perform, real quick they changed their mind
This k u so much for playing elvis.could u play the elvis vidio jailhouse rock.
I wish you had done the studio version. It’s much smoother.
Girl, you know that Man was FINE as f**k...damn that's a Shame success comes with a price..
You're beautiful!
He is called Elvis Aaron Presley . His twin Aaron died at birth. One of those back up singers is related to whitney
Really? He had a twin? Oh imagine the greatness if his twin had survived💯👌🏾 may he rest in peace🙂💜
I know right? But who knows maybe Elvis wouldn't even become a legend.. but yea his whole life had a little guilt that he survived.. and Whitney Houston's aunt or cousin was one of those ladies singing in the background. . Very generous he was as well. He was driving past a car lot where an old couple was checking out a new car. Elvis pulled over went into the car lot and bought the car for the couple.
Look for elvis Presley jr... Jerry presley is his cousin.and he sounds like him and favors him..Elvis jr looks like Elvis mom..
No one wanted to touch this song, not even the legend, Sammy Davis Jr.
Check out Elvis and Lisa Marie Presley in the ghetto please
I can do that for you🙂 i have soooo many request please bare with me🙏🏾 have you checked out my new music video yet? If not click the link m.ua-cam.com/video/u9QsXE0Njmk/v-deo.html
His back up singer was Whitney Houston mom
Listen to bridge over troubled water.
Try '' Blackbird " by the Beatles a song about a young black girl.
*Elvis acted in 39 movies!*
at the end, the baby being born is the "young mans" son, so as this man dies, his son
is doomed to repeat his father's actions... like he did. horrifically sad!
