I definitely agree with you about the background vocalists. A live performance is like a precious gem; and the background vocals polish it up real nice and make it shine!
You take away those three ladies with the lovely voices and this is a flimsy song. To absorb the full effect of those vocalists you almost have to see them in the video first; after establishing their presence, they're much easier to pick out during the rest of the song.
This performance is from the Delicate Sound of Thunder Tour which was in the late 80s into 1990. I saw that show in person, it was the best concert I will ever see.
Pink Floyd never gets old. The solos just capture my spirit and im where they are. So glad i had this music. No our bands , every member knew how important they are for the musical piece. If they wearnt important, they would not be there.
I can't say that I am familiar with this particular Pink Floyd song, which surprised me, but I really enjoyed it, and your reaction! Hope you feel better soon.
I thought you described that point where everyone sang together perfectly. A community. That is what this song advocated for. We are all in this together. None of us are getting out alive so we need to all make the best of it and let's just get along and love one another.
I saw them on this tour twice at the CNE in Toronto. Saw them three times on the Pulse tour. Nothing compares to a Pink Floyd concert, it's an experience.
this is really good song to get inspiration with so much of a unifying message no more turning away the weak and the weary from the faces of the cold and downtrodden I've had this album its such a timeless album love it more reflection here this is good
This concert is, I believe, from 1989. The album "A Momentary Lapse of Reason" which this song is off, came out in 1987. The actual music video for this epic, it a stop action claymation masterpiece.
My dear, I loved your reaction! Especially how you appreciated the background singers. They totally rock this song. They give me chills every time I watch this video.
On May 22nd 1994 in Montreal, QC, Canada I was a 17 years old kid at the Olympic Stadium, section 401 I was there and I remember the show like if it was yesterday.
I saw this concert twice, on May 23 and 24, 1994, Montreal Olympic Stadium. My employer (Labatt Breweries of Canada) was the sponsor for the three shows in Montreal, they were offering employees discounted tickets, in addition to a draw of a few dozen tickets. I bought mine for May 23 and I won those (a pair) for May 24. Some people have asked me, "Why are you going to see this show twice?" When they finally saw the DVD of this show a few years later, they understood why I was there twice.
I’m new to your channel but It’s clear very early on that you’re very astute as to some of the more subtle aspects of music production and nuances of instrument fills and subtle flourishes. Your enthusiasm and joy of experiencing new music is infectious!
The concert took place in August, 1988 at Nassau Coliseum, From the Album and Concert video Delicate Sound of Thunder released later that year. I ought to know, I was at the concert!
Pedal Steel is the name of the instrument for slide sounds with no frets and instead of fingers, a piece of metal or glass to keep the notes continuing. There are pedals for the foot that change the pitch like "whammy bars".
The Background singers were so damn beautiful and talented. Really made the performance, imo. Gilmour is a genius as well as Waters. I have seen them in concert 6 times, over the years, lol Pink Floyd has had a big impact in my life.
I think they are saying, that if each one of us showed a little compassion to our "neighbours" and not so judgemental and blindly going along with the masses...were ALL in this world together..
Get well soon! Steel guitar or Table guitar...there is an acoustic-like setup as well called the lap guitar. High Hopes from the Pulse concert is an excellent example of David playing. The best I have ever seen play the steel guitar is David Lindley as he toured with Jackson Browne. This video was from the Delicate Sound of Thunder tour, the tour before Pulse, and the first tour after settling all the court battles with Roger Waters. More Pink Floyd, please.
I was at this concert. Called A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour. Pink Floyd embarked on a tour that took them to sell-out concerts worldwide. The tour was a series of 3 tours, starting with the ‘ Momentary Lapse Tour’, which commenced on September 9, 1987, to December 12, 1987. Then, on January 22, 1988, they began the ‘World Tour’ on August 23, 1988. They picked up their instruments again on May 13, 1989, when they kicked off the ‘Another Lapse’ part of the trilogy. The final date of these tours was July 18, 1989.
So far so good, the video is still up, yayyy... oh and the instrument you are thinking of is the Lap Steel (Slide) Guitar. David to my recollection uses in in maybe two or three songs that I know of. This song is about community and social conscience to those in need. It's a great message.
It’s from the live concert A Delicate Sound of Thunder (A Momentary Laps of Reason) Tour. early 90s, Tim Renwick on Acoustic Guitar. The flat Guitar is called a Lap Steel Guitar
The song is about turning away from the suffering and ignoring those in need.... we should not be turning away, remaining apathetic to the suffering of so many in the world, both at home and abroad - we should all remain constantly aware and do what we can to help them, and to promote some much needed change and love.
Nothing better than a classic to heal. I wish you a quick recovery. Yes, Pulse is Pink Floyd's best performance. Suggestion to know: Mr Mister-Broken Wings.
Thanks for working while sick. ❤️ I saw The Floyd several times on this tour in 1987-1988. Incredibile shows. It's nice to have a video document of the shows you saw. Pure joy to see them live.
Another fine reaction to this magnificent band. Back in the 1990s and early 2000s, when I taught senior secondary school Social Studies, I used this majestic ode to a better world to introduce the students to the Human Rights section of the course. The epic guitar solo certainly assisted with getting their attention.
This was at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island in August of 1988. I was there one of the nights they were filming but I don't know if it was the night in this video. I was on the floor, center aisle, 10th row, and all I had to do for the ticket was supply the ride from New Jersey and back. A year later I was living just a few miles from there. Fantastic show, of course.
They were great no matter what tour you saw them at, masters of the studio or the stage, nice performance to say the least. Amazing ensemble making for the gigantic sound they produce, every song is a masterpiece but also different. Also from that tour, do Dogs Of War, another banger of a tune that is always relevant. Enjoy! 🔥🎵🎸🎤🎹🎷🎶🔥
A Momentary Lapse of Reason" is the album and tour name in I believe 1988 into 1989. Look it up on YT it's a lot like the Pulse concerts of1994. Both are exceptional. That instrument is a lap steel David plays it a lot on the song High Hopes.
I saw P,F. in '88 and rhe live videos don't do it justice,,,, Head & shoulders the greatest concert in my life!!!! Put me in a coma for a week .... It had all the lights, lasers and fltying pigs that are seen in the PULSE videos but the big difference was I saw them in an outdoor stadium so all that was 10x bigger & better!!! Saddens me that thay will never tour again...
Lyrically I think this is the best Pink Floyd song. A lot of their songs have deep lyrics but this song carries an uplifting message, a rare trait with Pink Floyd. The last verse is absolutely sublime: No more turning away From the weak and the weary No more turning away From the coldness inside Just a world that we all must share It’s not enough just to stand and stare Is it only a dream that there’ll be No more turning away?
Hello, the instrument you're refering to is the Steel Lap Guitar. Traditionally played in Blues (the good heavy stuff), and Country. Don't know where you're at in the voyage of Pink Floyd, if you haven't already listened to it, you should enjoy the "Wish You Were Here" album. Best listened to as a whole album (parts 1 & 2).
This recording from 1988 (David has hair) is from the DVD compiled from 'A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour' as Delicate Sound of Thunder.... 'Pulse' wasn't a single concert... it was compiled from shows during The Division Bell Tour.... I saw that show in Pittsburgh, Pa.
That instrument is called a lap steel guitar or slide guitar. Used a lot in country music. If you like that instrument, you may also like the hammer dulcimer. Another interesting instrument.
When everybody sings together it demonstrates unity. Together we stand, divided we fall, it is a simple message that has fallen short in a modern time of selfishness and greed. Kindness, love and understanding has gotten lost in The Turning Away. The turning away is self serving and only deepens our divides but does nothing to unite us and move us forward as a peoples. People turn away because that is the easy thing to do.

This is one of my absolute favourites and I cannot agree with you enough, Madalina, those backing singers (at the front, where they should be) make a magnificent wall of sound! They are Margaret Taylor, Durga McBroom and Rachel Fury. Margaret's vocal flourish at 10:02 is stunning!
The song is about how cold we are becomming...and if we leave those in strife (refugees) to suffer...if we turn them away...we will become cold....and in time...one of them. 40 years old...and more important NOW than ever
This was the concert video/ live album 'The delicate sound of thunder' by Pink Floyd recorded on their 1988 tour for the album 'A momentary lapse of reason'... Pink Floyd's first album and tour without founding bassist/ vocalist Roger Waters. "Run Like Hell" from the Delicate Sound of Thunder concert is my favorite live performance by PF. The opening guitar part with the synchronized laser lights is epic.....and lots of chunky bass.😉
great reaction, if you want to hear those backing singers really shine then i would recommend you try "GREAT GIG IN THE SKY " from the live pulse concert
Dave Gilmore makes playing a guitar look easy, but there isn't many that can get the feeling out of the instrument that he does! Coupled with Rick Wright on the keyboards make an excellent combination 👍👍
The cell phone era started approx. 2001. Maybe late 90's the size of an iron lol. Back then lighters were popular and no cameras allowed or if caught you got thrown out of the concert. People often snuck in small personal tape recorders lol. Good ole days. I first seen Pink Floyd during the "Wall" LP tour. Been listening the them on early LPS as a kid. Nice choice for reaction.
The instrument you were talking about is the lap steel guitar.
I suggest you watch the track "High Hopes" from PULSE.
Also knowns as a slide guitar (although some slide guitars are also played standing up). Specifically, it is a Fender Deluxe Lap Steel slide guitar
Yup. It’s the same strings as a regular guitar but it’s played with a steel tube thingy and it’s built like a table…sort of
@@ArthurDentt-l6j
Exactly 🤣
Gilmour's most amazing pedal steel moment by far is and will always be "One of These Days". Live, of course. Preferably "Pulse"
@@stevebradley6275 You can also play "slide guitar" with a normal guitar with a slide tube.
This is a song with a wonderful message. It`s beautiful....Great reaction. Thank you.❤

Pink Floyd is the best.
Bisscute brings it sick or not...she is healing the world one reaction at a time! I hope you have a rapid recovery.!
I saw them perform this live in 1987 in Dallas when the song was brand new. Amazing, amazing concert!
I was able to see this performance in 1987, pre-cell phone days.
The instrument you are talking about David playing is a Peddle steel guitar. They are used a lot in traditional country music.
Pink Floyd the best medicine love the smile on your face

Pink Floyd is a Experience of Life through Music that goes straight to your Soul
One of Pink Floyds more poignant tracks with a very deep storyline and typical Gilmour solo and of course the amazing backing scream!
The great gig in the sky from the pulse concert features the backup singers.
The part where they all sing and the music stops is remarkable and very moving.
Best medicine is can't miss artists such as Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Dire Straits, Bob Seger!! 🙂🙂
You have great taste in music!

Such a good song. I had forgot about this one. Very good pick to react to.

David Gilmour making that electric guitar sing. Amazing song.
