- If something occurs during an NFL game that is "palpably unfair," the officials can use their judgment to rectify the situation however they see fit, whether it be moving the placement of the ball, awarding points to a team, etc. Should something "extraordinarily" unfair occur, well, the almighty commissioner can step in with powers that no know bounds -- up to and including flipping a game's result or ordering everyone back to the playing field. What in the world could evoke the desire for such drastic measures?

I think of all the horrifically unrealistic moments in Draft Day, the most jarring one is the part where Roger Goodell isn't booed mercilessly when introduced on stage at the draft.
Going to the NFL draft was great because it didnt matter what jersey was on each persons back, no matter who they were supporting, EVERYONE booed Goodell

The funniest part about the Snowplow game, is that the snowplow driver was actually on a prison-release work crew working maintenance at Foxborough, and after the game he said:
"I'm on a prison work crew, if someone tells me to do something, I'm doing it."

That smell bad strat? That's actually a strat in Yu-Gi-Oh card tournaments that recently had a rule placed on it.

In the Yu-Gi-Oh card game, there is a card combo that requires your opponent to shake your hand. A few people came up with the idea of being stinky and gross so their opponents would rather surrender that game than touch them
What you failed to explain is if you have Unity in your hand, they also have no choice but to shake your hand.

Here's a weird rule: during the 1970s, the A's used to have "designated runners" who never played any position, they would only show up late in the game to be base runners. They'd hire track-and-field stars and only teach them when to attempt to steal a base. Since baseball allows pinch runners, this is not against the rules. But if the game went into extra innings, those runners might have to end up batting, so the practice died off.
Baseball and football are full of extremely specialized niche situation players who aren’t even backup to the backup’s backup level but still have a job because they can do one thing.

Weird Rules Suggestion: In the 1990s, Field Hockey had an arms race between rules writers and stick designers to prevent defenders and goalkeepers using weird shapes with huge surface areas. At one point the rule said that it only had to be able to slide through a 2" ring, leading to designs where the 2" handle zig-zagged back and forth repeatedly....

No, they can't award an arbitrary number of points. The equitable penalty rules (which apply to unfair acts in all the major codes, not just NFL's) allow for the award of a score if a team is deprived of one by an unfair act. So it has to be a score that could've come up in that play. But these "God" decisions are very rare in American and Canadian football. Know where they aren't so rare? Rugby. In rugby the referee can award a score if an illegal act -- really any rules violation -- deprived a team of a "probable" one; in American and Canadian football, it has to be a damn near certainty that they would've scored had it not been for a cheat of a kind that doesn't ordinarily come up in play.

Lol. The "palpably unfair hygiene" exception was already pioneered by me. In high school, as a wrestler, I'd eat a whole bag of "funions" before a match and breathe on my opponent during the tie-ups. They'd wretch, and boom, takedown.

If I remember correctly, after the Patriots kicked their field goal, the Dolphins moved the ball downfield and attempted to kick a field goal. At that point, the Patriots offered to plow a spot for the Dolphins holder to place the ball on dry ground, but Don Shula refused and the kicker missed the attempt.
I don't see how using the snowplow would be "palpably" unfair if the Dolphins came into a situation where they could have had the ground plowed in the exact same way, were offered the opportunity to do so, and just refused to.
I guess if the Dolphins were trying a longer field goal, they could try arguing that the snowplow shouldn't have been used at all, and neither team should have scored, but that's stretching it a little, since using the snowplow in such manner wasn't yet specifically against the rules.

And the guy driving the snowplow, Mark Henderson (who, incidentally, was a convict on work release), said afterwards that had that exact situation come up, he would've hid himself and his tractor to prevent Don Shula from finding him. XD

Love the series. Just binge watched all of the weird rules videos. I know of a ton of these as content suggestions, but to start with, the Durnan rule in the NHL about goaltender captains is fun. He used to get his team unscheduled time outs by leaving his crease to talk to the refs about a call, often at important times in the game. Or often enough that there's a rule, anyway.

@@kingolight So what actually happened is that they made it to the Patriots' 20 with a minute left. They ran it on 1st down, threw incomplete on 2nd down, and on 3rd down, got intercepted. Shula was never given an opportunity to use the snowplow - had it gotten to 4th down, that probably would've become a point of discussion.
Unless you're arguing that Shula should've settled for a 33-yard field goal with 1st down and a minute left (in blizzard conditions, remember), then no, it wasn't a dumb call.
Also, Mark Henderson, the convict on work-release driving the snowplow, said that had that situation arisen, he would've hidden himself and the snowplow so the officials couldn't find him. :D

Had a goalie for my floor hockey team that had a family of skunks living under his house. The skunks also sprayed his equipment bag, liberally. For multiple games I didn't have to worry about clearing the front of the net for him. His stench did it for me.

I've watched several of these videos of explaining weird situations to people. There was a playoff game that Anfy Dalton started against the Texans which he had started more games at NRG than all active Texans quarterbacks at the time. Andy started games there in high school and in bowl games for TCU, while the Texan quarterbacks were all injured and had Jake Delhome and Jeff Garcia on the active roster.

So it's like the 9th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which incidentally I always called the "god" amendment (because a 9 looks like a lowercase g).
It states, "The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people", which is not sexy one bit. They should have thrown a "palpably" in there somewhere.

There's a smell rule in other competitions, specifically in Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments! You have to not smell like rot to play in Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments!
I do just want to point out that the "helmet to helmet pass interference" no call in the Saints game did directly affect the chance of the Saints going to the Super Bowl. I know that "they could've done it in OT" and all that bullshit but the point is the game never should have gone to OT in the first place!

Saints NFC title game PI was just a blown call that happens a few times a game? No you idiots. It was blatant PI and helmet to helmet hit. 2 fouls on 1 play at a crucial time in the game which ended up costing the Saints a trip to the Super Bowl.
The smell bad strategy has already been tried in an even more extreme way. Defensive lineman for the Cowboys Leon Lett used to literally piss himself every game so the o-line wouldn't want to guard him.
