The first three are an epic tied battle, with HSV losing the cup tie only on penalties. Now, the UEFA Cup Semi second leg. The score is tied, HSV won the first 1-0 in Bremen, Bremen is leading 2-1 in Hamburg, the next goal is cricual. 83 minutes are played, so the game is almost over. A ball is kicked towards the HSV goal line and will go out for a HSV goal kick - except that there is a paper ball (similar to the beachball, it is HSV made and a HSV fan threw it on the pitch. The ball hits the paper ball and does not go out, a Werder payer gets it first and wins a corner. Werder scores the decider from the corner. THe paper ball is now in Werder's museum.
the best thing is that I recall that during the next Liverpool away game, basically everyone in attendance brought a beach ball to the stadium, causing problems in the organisation of the match
It's funny that fans would use this as mocking reason to them. They winning with an accidental beach ball interference, so it's really annoying for Liverpool and spread the whisps to FA about it.

This is the first Weird Rules to make me actually angry. If I was a coach in either of these games seeing the refs just shrug at literal obstacles changing the course of the game, I'd forfeit the match in protest!
Watched this game live and I'm still pissed off about it. Darren Bent scoring the only goal of the game via a deflection from a beach ball is a story I'll tell to my grandchildren
Played and Reffed for many, many years. Two situations I can remember. 1) As a player (goalkeeper) in an Ontario Cup elimination match the only goal of the game, and which got passed me, was "scored" by the ref. For some strange reason he was really close to my goal and an off target shot bounced off his knee and right into the corner of the net. 2) As a ref many years later I was officiating a competitive U14 girls match. Two raccoons came screaming out of the woods next to the field, and started to tear into each other in a vicious fight no nature documentary could have ever filmed. The kids from both teams refused to take the field after as the loser of the fight was dead just off the sideline out of bounds (don't blame them). Wrote up the incident report and the Ontario Soccer Association in all their "We are in Charge!" glory declared the game a double forfeit and fined both teams. Ridiculous.
I love Weird Rules, though I prefer the old format where Ryan (Simmons) was the consistent host with a rotating guest. No disrespect to anyone else involved in the show, still always enjoy the episodes.

Do you guys know the story of Hamburg vs Bremen, the City's are one hour away of each other, and have a great rivalry, in 2009 they played 4 times in 19 days. Once in the national championship wich Bremen won 2-0, once in the semi finals of the national cup, Bremen also won this and went to the finals. And twice in the semi finals of the international cup. First in Bremen where Hamburg won, the last game was played in Hamburg and the fans had a choreography with thousands of paper sheets, one of those sheets got crumpled up and thrown onto the pitch, towards the end of the game, a Hamburg defender tried to clear the ball and it got ricochet of the paper ball for a corner, the corner led to the deciding goal for Bremen they one this game and went to the finals, so Hamburg lost 3 potential titles in 19 days because of a tiny bit of paper.

Excellent summary! It's hard to overstate how soul-crushing that string of losses was for Hamburg, who never really competed for any of those titles again and are now stuck in the second division. And of course, that paper ball is also on display in the Werder Bremen museum.
@@larsmarianne913 It's no overstatement to say that these weeks broke the club. Losing against the archrival made the organised Fans, who already hated the guy, vote the clubs president out, the Manager left before that after a power struggle with said President and the Coach left after the season because he didn't get the powers of the leaving Manager. They never recovered from this string of events, especially as infighting continued for years. If they move on to at least one Final, I don't think it happens this way. Though to correct you on one thing: They actuallym made the semi-finals of the international cup the season after again, only to lose against Fulham FC. Adding insult to injury, their stadium was the venue for the Final that year, so it would have been a Final at home.
This reminds me of two incidents: A: a 1993 NHL game between the Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers, where during a Rangers rush a fan along the sidelines threw a puck onto the ice and into the Canucks' goal - with frankly stunning accuracy - setting the MSG crowd off and making them think the Rangers had scored. B: A soccer game from Brazil in 2013, I don't know the teams involved, but at one point one team's masseur sneaks onto the pitch while his team's defending, makes two (amazing, to be honest) kick saves on shots that should have been goals for the other team, then runs the hell off the field and to the locker room before the other team and their fans get a hold of him.
Oh god I remember the physio one, weren't they warming up behind the goal when the attack happened, the keeper rushed out so he just ran on and made a great double save
until recently, anything the ball touched on field was considered "air", even referee's legs, so it was allowed. That changed and this situation is not allowed. Play has to restart from where the interference took place.
That and if I remember right, the ref never saw the deflection or at least didnt think it took enough of a deflection and so once he gave the goal, he cant overturn it since overturning calls was very unheard of prior to var

Being from Brazil, I have seen all kinds of foreign objects, team staff, dogs, birds, even the referee himself interfering with plays, goals being either scored or deflected, etc. on a recurrent basis. But I can understand you guys being amused by the novelty of it.
The beach ball was thrown on the pitch by a Liverpool fan during a Sunderland attack. If you don't allow the goal you're allowing fans to throw things onto the pitch to try and disrupt an opposition attack

As a Sunderland fan I remember this, and I had to wait to see the games highlights later that evening thinking: "There's no way that was a real goal. It's too stupid to be real."

Interesting to see Joe Ali's reaction to the possibility of animals getting onto the football pitch. There's a good example (that might get into your 'That's Weird' videos, or maybe added as an example to the rule raised in this Weird Rules) of a time when the welfare of a human ended up in danger, rather than the animal. Chic Brodie was playing as a goalkeeper for Brentford in a match against Colchester United in 1969. In footage that's on UA-cam (in great quality), he gets hit by a dog running amok on the field after collecting a back-pass. The injury Brodie sustains ended his career!
You guys should do an episode on how an NFL playoff game continue into double Overtime even when the score is not tied due to Rule 16 Section 1 Article 5 (a) which states "If the score is tied at the end of a 15-minute overtime period, *or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended, another overtime period will begin, and play will continue, regardless of how many 15-minute periods are necessary*." (emphasis mine). This is one of my favorite weird rules and I really hope it comes into play some day.
Even if a balloon isn't going to interfere with a fast moving ball, the balloons should have been cleared from the field for being an unnatural physical hazard to the players. Even with cleats, you can probably get tripped up or thrown off by stepping on a balloon at a bad angle. That was a case of the refs letting the game proceed even though the scoring area of the field was covered in large pieces of garbage.

I think the beachball was treated like a stump on the pitch, like when you play in a really bad pitch and your ball changes direction because it hits some dirt or puddle it still counts as goal.
Never have I shouted louder at a TV than when they allowed this goal. Think like most Liverpool fans I will continue to be baffled by this incident for the rest of my life
Fun fact: Mike Jones, the referee who awarded the goal, was promptly demoted to the Championship (England's second tier) following the incident. I'm still not certain, but based on my research I don't think he ever was promoted back to the Premier League officiating roster again after this. And let's be honest... *TOTALLY* deserved. I do love that it happened against Liverpool though if I'm being honest lol
As a player, if you are unhappy with the state of the game you have to challenge it immediately. Saying 'that shouldn't have counted' after the fact is meaningless, you have to proactively stop play and get it sorted out. As a general rule, if both teams continue to play both teams are agreeing that the current state of the game is acceptable.
That's not entirely true because sometimes when teams stop to protest something it gives the other team a chance to score and then the officials ignore the request any ways, while many respond that you should have kept playing.
@@kevinmoynihan5118 Sure, they can ignore the request. But you don't have to keep playing just because the officials ignore the request, you can just walk off the pitch and go home. If you have a problem with the way the game is being officiated it is on you to sort it out in the moment, not rely on it being sorted out retroactively.

There are Australian poems about this kind of stuff, a dog once won a game of cricket by getting the ball and then leading all the fielders on a merry chase. Fishermen tried using explosives to catch fish, which was going well until the dog "fetched" the dynamite! The one true story I know of this type of thing is some one tying a stick of dynamite to a rabbit and letting it go in an attempt to blow up a rabbit warren. However the rabbit decided to run under their brand new land cruiser!

if you go to that museum's website they have nice photos of the beach ball. if you zoom in you can see that there's a warning printed on it stating: "USE ONLY UNDER COMPETENT SUPERVISION" so really the ref failed to enforce two rules that day
I’m not sure what replays the commentators were privy too but the ball quite clearly changes trajectory after hitting the balloon… like it’s OBVIOUS from the club level behind goal angle shown at 3:00.. not sure if it was just the opposing teams commentators or what but that’s just blatant
I'm late to the party here, but as a soccer referee, a couple comments from various points of the video: 1.) A *LOT* of the soccer rulebook ("The Laws of the Game") leave things up to the referee's discretion. Aside from out of bounds calls, the vast majority of rulings I make during a game have some level of subjectivity, because the rulebook is specifically written to empower referees to call their games as they see fit, within such and such bounds. Everything's written with intentional/unintentional distinctions, the undefined meanings of "careless", "reckless", and "excessive force" (which are the official distinctions between fouls that are just a free kick, a yellow card, and a red card, respectively), etc. It's quite clearly a design choice. They WANT referees to exercise judgement, rather than just enforcing what's written in the rulebook. 2.) I don't think the white balloons call as non-interference was wrong. The ball wasn't effected by it, and while that one defender looked a little silly, it didn't look like he actually mistook a balloon for the ball as you guys suggested; he just missed it. If he'd mistaken a balloon for the ball, he'd have put his foot solidly into a balloon, which he didn't appear to do. 3.) The beachball 100% interfered with play, and play should have been stopped. Awarding a drop ball to the offensive team that close to the goal would have been interesting to see.... 4.) I love the joke at the end about whether this should be considered an own goal, because it was a Liverpool balloon, but the scoring convention for own goals is that if the ball was already heading towards goal when the defender deflected it, it's not an own goal. That was the case here, so it would still be awarded to the shooter. Again, excellent joke.
Interfering with play is a term that turns up in off-side, too. You can be penalised for being off-side if you, for example, block the field of view of the goalkeeper, which is something few people know. Many people think you have to touch the ball to be penalised for off-side

Prior to VAR, It is extremely rare for a ref to overturn a call when it comes to soccer, even if the evidence slaps them in the face like in the two examples mentioned in this video. I remember watching Mexico vs Argentina in the knockout stages of the World Cup (2010?), the first goal of the game the player for Argentina was offsides but nobody really seemed to notice... UNTIL the replay was shown on the huge TV's in the stadium. While the Argentina team was celebrating, everyone in the stadium including the refs saw the replay but because they had already called it a goal, they weren't allowed to overturn it. I love the sport, but man is it dumb sometimes lol

What you gotta understand about football is that anything that happens and was decided is pretty much set in stone. Yes, the ref should have stopped play to remove the obstacle, but because he didn't, the obstacle is lawfully there, so to speak. This approach isn't too dumb either, because it means that there is no situation, while reclamation or whining can get you anywhere. Considering how 90% of football matches are played on an amateur level and the goal of the laws of the game is to work on every level, it's really sensible.

This is the first Weird Rules to make me actually angry. If I was a coach in either of these games seeing the refs just shrug at literal obstacles changing the course of the game, I'd forfeit the match in protest!
Watched this game live and I'm still pissed off about it. Darren Bent scoring the only goal of the game via a deflection from a beach ball is a story I'll tell to my grandchildren

Played and Reffed for many, many years. Two situations I can remember.
1) As a player (goalkeeper) in an Ontario Cup elimination match the only goal of the game, and which got passed me, was "scored" by the ref. For some strange reason he was really close to my goal and an off target shot bounced off his knee and right into the corner of the net.
2) As a ref many years later I was officiating a competitive U14 girls match. Two raccoons came screaming out of the woods next to the field, and started to tear into each other in a vicious fight no nature documentary could have ever filmed. The kids from both teams refused to take the field after as the loser of the fight was dead just off the sideline out of bounds (don't blame them). Wrote up the incident report and the Ontario Soccer Association in all their "We are in Charge!" glory declared the game a double forfeit and fined both teams. Ridiculous.

Do you guys know the story of Hamburg vs Bremen, the City's are one hour away of each other, and have a great rivalry, in 2009 they played 4 times in 19 days. Once in the national championship wich Bremen won 2-0, once in the semi finals of the national cup, Bremen also won this and went to the finals. And twice in the semi finals of the international cup. First in Bremen where Hamburg won, the last game was played in Hamburg and the fans had a choreography with thousands of paper sheets, one of those sheets got crumpled up and thrown onto the pitch, towards the end of the game, a Hamburg defender tried to clear the ball and it got ricochet of the paper ball for a corner, the corner led to the deciding goal for Bremen they one this game and went to the finals, so Hamburg lost 3 potential titles in 19 days because of a tiny bit of paper.

Excellent summary! It's hard to overstate how soul-crushing that string of losses was for Hamburg, who never really competed for any of those titles again and are now stuck in the second division.
And of course, that paper ball is also on display in the Werder Bremen museum.
@@larsmarianne913 It's no overstatement to say that these weeks broke the club. Losing against the archrival made the organised Fans, who already hated the guy, vote the clubs president out, the Manager left before that after a power struggle with said President and the Coach left after the season because he didn't get the powers of the leaving Manager. They never recovered from this string of events, especially as infighting continued for years. If they move on to at least one Final, I don't think it happens this way.
Though to correct you on one thing: They actuallym made the semi-finals of the international cup the season after again, only to lose against Fulham FC. Adding insult to injury, their stadium was the venue for the Final that year, so it would have been a Final at home.

This reminds me of two incidents:
A: a 1993 NHL game between the Vancouver Canucks and New York Rangers, where during a Rangers rush a fan along the sidelines threw a puck onto the ice and into the Canucks' goal - with frankly stunning accuracy - setting the MSG crowd off and making them think the Rangers had scored.
B: A soccer game from Brazil in 2013, I don't know the teams involved, but at one point one team's masseur sneaks onto the pitch while his team's defending, makes two (amazing, to be honest) kick saves on shots that should have been goals for the other team, then runs the hell off the field and to the locker room before the other team and their fans get a hold of him.
Hope both interferers got into the minors - great feats of athleticism.
Oh god I remember the physio one, weren't they warming up behind the goal when the attack happened, the keeper rushed out so he just ran on and made a great double save
until recently, anything the ball touched on field was considered "air", even referee's legs, so it was allowed. That changed and this situation is not allowed. Play has to restart from where the interference took place.
And even then, overturning a call in a football match wasn't really a thing until VAR really

That and if I remember right, the ref never saw the deflection or at least didnt think it took enough of a deflection and so once he gave the goal, he cant overturn it since overturning calls was very unheard of prior to var

Being from Brazil, I have seen all kinds of foreign objects, team staff, dogs, birds, even the referee himself interfering with plays, goals being either scored or deflected, etc. on a recurrent basis. But I can understand you guys being amused by the novelty of it.
The referee hmself is not an extraneous object, so bouncing on him is valid.

The beach ball was thrown on the pitch by a Liverpool fan during a Sunderland attack. If you don't allow the goal you're allowing fans to throw things onto the pitch to try and disrupt an opposition attack

My team, Derby County scored a similar goal to win our big rivalry game against Nottingham F*rest, but it was a coffee cup instead of a beachball
Man, you missed out on the Papierkugel. The Scenario: 2009, UEFA-Cup Semi Final, between HSV and Werder Bremen. They are both rom Northern Germany, so it is a derby (the Nordderby) and they hate each other. Within a month they play each other 4 times: UEFA Cup Semi first leg, German Cup Semi, UEFA Cup Semi second leg, Bundesliga. The first three are an epic tied battle, with HSV losing the cup tie only on penalties.
Now, the UEFA Cup Semi second leg. The score is tied, HSV won the first 1-0 in Bremen, Bremen is leading 2-1 in Hamburg, the next goal is cricual. 83 minutes are played, so the game is almost over. A ball is kicked towards the HSV goal line and will go out for a HSV goal kick - except that there is a paper ball (similar to the beachball, it is HSV made and a HSV fan threw it on the pitch. The ball hits the paper ball and does not go out, a Werder payer gets it first and wins a corner. Werder scores the decider from the corner.
THe paper ball is now in Werder's museum.
Interesting to see Joe Ali's reaction to the possibility of animals getting onto the football pitch. There's a good example (that might get into your 'That's Weird' videos, or maybe added as an example to the rule raised in this Weird Rules) of a time when the welfare of a human ended up in danger, rather than the animal.
Chic Brodie was playing as a goalkeeper for Brentford in a match against Colchester United in 1969. In footage that's on UA-cam (in great quality), he gets hit by a dog running amok on the field after collecting a back-pass. The injury Brodie sustains ended his career!
You guys should do an episode on how an NFL playoff game continue into double Overtime even when the score is not tied due to Rule 16 Section 1 Article 5 (a) which states "If the score is tied at the end of a 15-minute overtime period, *or if the second team’s initial possession has not ended, another overtime period will begin, and play will continue, regardless of how many 15-minute periods are necessary*." (emphasis mine). This is one of my favorite weird rules and I really hope it comes into play some day.

Even if a balloon isn't going to interfere with a fast moving ball, the balloons should have been cleared from the field for being an unnatural physical hazard to the players. Even with cleats, you can probably get tripped up or thrown off by stepping on a balloon at a bad angle. That was a case of the refs letting the game proceed even though the scoring area of the field was covered in large pieces of garbage.
Why is Joe so surprised that the beach ball goal was the only one scored in that match? It's soccer. The most common final score is 1-0.

Animals on the pitch happen all the time in lower leagues. Usually stray dogs or foxes but there are some pretty funny ones out there.
I think the beachball was treated like a stump on the pitch, like when you play in a really bad pitch and your ball changes direction because it hits some dirt or puddle it still counts as goal.

Fun fact: Mike Jones, the referee who awarded the goal, was promptly demoted to the Championship (England's second tier) following the incident. I'm still not certain, but based on my research I don't think he ever was promoted back to the Premier League officiating roster again after this. And let's be honest... *TOTALLY* deserved. I do love that it happened against Liverpool though if I'm being honest lol

As a player, if you are unhappy with the state of the game you have to challenge it immediately. Saying 'that shouldn't have counted' after the fact is meaningless, you have to proactively stop play and get it sorted out.
As a general rule, if both teams continue to play both teams are agreeing that the current state of the game is acceptable.
That's not entirely true because sometimes when teams stop to protest something it gives the other team a chance to score and then the officials ignore the request any ways, while many respond that you should have kept playing.
@@kevinmoynihan5118 Sure, they can ignore the request. But you don't have to keep playing just because the officials ignore the request, you can just walk off the pitch and go home.
If you have a problem with the way the game is being officiated it is on you to sort it out in the moment, not rely on it being sorted out retroactively.

i watched this game live. the really funny thing is that just a few minutes prior, i saw that beach ball inside the liverpool goal and i thought to myself, 'self, wouldn't be funny if the goalie put the ball in front of his own goal to act as an additional obstruction?' and i mean, i didn't *see* the goalie put the ball out in front of his box, but 1 + x = 2 ya know?

If you want to see true anger, ask a HSV fan( Club from Hamburg, germany) about a small paper Ball. That item also ended up in a museum
if you go to that museum's website they have nice photos of the beach ball. if you zoom in you can see that there's a warning printed on it stating: "USE ONLY UNDER COMPETENT SUPERVISION" so really the ref failed to enforce two rules that day

I’m not sure what replays the commentators were privy too but the ball quite clearly changes trajectory after hitting the balloon… like it’s OBVIOUS from the club level behind goal angle shown at 3:00.. not sure if it was just the opposing teams commentators or what but that’s just blatant
I'm late to the party here, but as a soccer referee, a couple comments from various points of the video:
1.) A *LOT* of the soccer rulebook ("The Laws of the Game") leave things up to the referee's discretion. Aside from out of bounds calls, the vast majority of rulings I make during a game have some level of subjectivity, because the rulebook is specifically written to empower referees to call their games as they see fit, within such and such bounds. Everything's written with intentional/unintentional distinctions, the undefined meanings of "careless", "reckless", and "excessive force" (which are the official distinctions between fouls that are just a free kick, a yellow card, and a red card, respectively), etc. It's quite clearly a design choice. They WANT referees to exercise judgement, rather than just enforcing what's written in the rulebook.
2.) I don't think the white balloons call as non-interference was wrong. The ball wasn't effected by it, and while that one defender looked a little silly, it didn't look like he actually mistook a balloon for the ball as you guys suggested; he just missed it. If he'd mistaken a balloon for the ball, he'd have put his foot solidly into a balloon, which he didn't appear to do.
3.) The beachball 100% interfered with play, and play should have been stopped. Awarding a drop ball to the offensive team that close to the goal would have been interesting to see....
4.) I love the joke at the end about whether this should be considered an own goal, because it was a Liverpool balloon, but the scoring convention for own goals is that if the ball was already heading towards goal when the defender deflected it, it's not an own goal. That was the case here, so it would still be awarded to the shooter.

Interfering with play is a term that turns up in off-side, too. You can be penalised for being off-side if you, for example, block the field of view of the goalkeeper, which is something few people know. Many people think you have to touch the ball to be penalised for off-side

Prior to VAR, It is extremely rare for a ref to overturn a call when it comes to soccer, even if the evidence slaps them in the face like in the two examples mentioned in this video.
I remember watching Mexico vs Argentina in the knockout stages of the World Cup (2010?), the first goal of the game the player for Argentina was offsides but nobody really seemed to notice... UNTIL the replay was shown on the huge TV's in the stadium. While the Argentina team was celebrating, everyone in the stadium including the refs saw the replay but because they had already called it a goal, they weren't allowed to overturn it. I love the sport, but man is it dumb sometimes lol

My favorite part is that humans are grouped with animals (very correct, but an uncommon grouping in everyday language), while at the same time balls are not grouped with objects.
What you gotta understand about football is that anything that happens and was decided is pretty much set in stone. Yes, the ref should have stopped play to remove the obstacle, but because he didn't, the obstacle is lawfully there, so to speak. This approach isn't too dumb either, because it means that there is no situation, while reclamation or whining can get you anywhere. Considering how 90% of football matches are played on an amateur level and the goal of the laws of the game is to work on every level, it's really sensible.
