Thanks for watching! I tried to cram as much info into this as I could! If you want to learn more about the new 18-40mm lens check out my other video here - ua-cam.com/video/QvC-5rC3gbE/v-deo.htmlsi=sFgtVmVtVylm3cMz The S9 update is wild!
I have loved my S9 since launch (even though already owning the S5II) and this update will just confirm I made the right choice. Great pieces of kit and good video as always.
Always nice to see your happy face bristling with tech joy once again. After finally getting started with video my MFT upgrade path (towards OM-1 or GH6/7) immediately deviated. S9 etc. suddenly makes a lot of sense, realtime LUTs in particular to avoid any valuable and scarce project time time spent in post on amateur grading efforts. MFT is not totally ruled out though I'd prefer something else than a G9II or GHx but that may appear soon, hopefully.
In the short time I have owned a Lumix camera they have had more firmware updates than I received with half a decade of using Sony! This is great to see. Shame about the lack of 32 bit float recording with the XLR handle, that would have been super sweet! Now I can also seriously consider the S9 as a C cam for podcasts! Great video, thanks as always!
Imagine i bought g9ii a week ago and upgraded the body and lens October 7 to a latest firmware so it can handle 25-50 1,7, and they popped up another one October 9😮..
Thanks. I always found myself making small adjustments in editing and now I can just drop it out of the camera as a final output. It took a while to get it to look the way it does but I am happy with it :). Cheers.
With every passing month, I massively regret buying the g9 II. Can't record more than 40 minutes without overheating and shutting down for 10 minutes. The gh7 was announced a week after my return policy expired, so I guess I sell it at a $500 loss.
Thanks for sharing the update information. I'm a big lumix fan, but I have to say I'm very disappointed with the firmware updates. LUMIX seem to be prioritising the S9 which is their entry level FF and and not giving many of the features to their more expensive and more capable cameras. No new AF subject detection for the S5II or G9II, or hybrid zoom?! Video recording frames for the S5IIX?
That slow as eff lens highlights why the S9 needs to be MFT. You can get f1.8 or 1.7 lenses the same size or smaller in MFT, and if wanting a zoom, there are zooms that are faster around that size. However you cut it, there is a need for MFT compacts with reliable auto-focus, flippy screens, mic/headphone ports, and mechanical IBIS and shutter.
Absolutely mental how multiple frame markers is not a feature on S5 IIX. This camera is literally meant for videography and cinematography and the feature is so useful.
i would also like a similar size 18-40 f3.5 with some "compromise" to corner sharpness and contrast. they could market it as vintage feel lens (to go with their "in camera lut" selling point). i think the center sharpness and light weight could be a huge selling point for content creators. for social media everything is usually center composition anyways. pls make it happen panasonic. all around carry beast with some low light capability. excellent for short video content and pictures alike.
S5II/IIx and G9II now can set Fn to Real Time LUT like S9, it’s really fantastic! But G9II hasn’t add train and air plane detection, just waiting for new feature close to GH7.
I'm curious if you can test something for me. G9 II with firmware 2.2 The 'exposure comp reset' feature does not work for me in C1, C2 and C3 on the dial. This is a global setting, so if you set it to ON while in A mode (aperture priority), then it's also on in C1, C2, C3. I confirmed it shows as ON in C1, C2, C3 but when I change the exposure compensation while on C1, when I turn the camera off and on, the exposure comp is not reset to 0 as it should be. Is it the same for you? More details: If I change exposure comp while on C1 and then turn the camera off and then turn it on again, the exposure comp is still at the value I set just for turning the camera off (but it should be back to 0). If I change the exposure comp while on A on the dial (aperture priority) and then turn the camera off/on, the exposure comp is reset to 0 as I would expect (working properly). I also tried this on C2 and C3 (both of which I haven't changed/still at factory settings). With 'Exposure Comp. Reset' set to ON, it doesn't work in C2 or C3 either (I.E., when you turn the camera off/on, it doesn't reset the exposure comp value to 0). I'm curious if this works the same for you (same behavior as mentioned above). If you want to try it, go into the camera's menu and go to the gear icon, then go to page 2 of the Image Quality section, It should be the first setting at the top of the menu. Set 'Exposure Comp. Reset' to ON. Now that it's ON, go to Aperture priority on the mode dial. Change the exposure comp to -1 or whatever you want. Turn the camera off and back on. The exposure comp should be back to 0 (no compensation). Next go to C1 on the mode dial. Check the settings menu and confirm Exposure Comp. Reset is still set to ON. Now, change the exposure compensation to something other than 0, like -1 or +2, whatever you want. Turn the camera off and on again. Is your exposure comp back to 0 now or is it still at the value you set before turning the camera off?
As an S5IIX and G9II owner, this was a huge letdown. And leaves me wondering how long of a wait now, if ever, for the autofocus updates? Not to mention the neutered implementation for these in the Lab app.
It works with the Lab app and real-time lut now, where it didn't before. The rest of the app updates are coming pretty soon judging on what Sean said on their live stream earlier. The S5II & X had a massive update a while ago adding in all the e-stabilisation modes etc so I wouldn't be surprised to see more updates coming up. Any updates moving older cameras forward is good in my opinion. A lot of people wanted that picture profile as well.
From the quick testing I did last night, Lumix lab can’t control the S5II like it can on the S9. Although, going back to Lumix Sync wasn’t nearly as painful as before as 5 GHZ is enabled now for the wireless connection.
Looks cool for the S5IIx, but I’m a little confused why they’ve not added the AF stuff from the GH7 to it as well, like they did for the S9. Or did they? I’ve not done the update just yet. I mean, same sensor, right?
It hasn't got the latest update yet. Hopefully it gets pushed through at some point soon. It does have the car and motorcycle tracking though which came in on the last update.
Sadly, it hasn't happened in that mode. Just shoot 4k 50 or 60 if you want PDAF. I heard Sean on the live stream mention it might not happen a while back. Fingers crossed because the updates keep coming.
The Ulanzi fans don't fit properly with the S9. It works fine with the G9II, but the S9 doesn't have the same ridge so it sadly doesn't sit in there like it does on the other cameras in the line.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy So Amazon Prime day and after watching Yours and Microfournerds videos guess what I bought? Blue, SmallRig Grip and a strap. Already have batteries, chargers and SD Cards. I am also getting the 18-45mm Lens which should of been the Kit Lens at the promotion. Lens should be shipped last week of October. I already have quite of an assortment of lenses. But with the new firmware update and the removal of video record limit I think this will make the best travel camera. Cheers!
With the new 18-40 the S9 is one of the best modern contenders for to buy next for me. But where is the view finder... So so so so close to being the perfect camera... Gaaaah...
It's a shame that Panasonic didn't fix the AFC on video above F8. AFC only works on Canon EF lenses up to F8. Above that is the focus from the S5 Mark I system, including the Lumix lenses. So if you have EF lenses do not buy Lumix and Sigma MC-21 for video.
Thanks for the update video! Question on the hybrid zoom, does the feature work when shooting in any of the resolutions with the open gate aspect ratio? Or is just when its 16:9 4k/FHD?

how about S1H
Agree…I thought the option to remove the recording restriction was huge…and kudos to Panasonic for listening to folks! Nice updates all around!
Wow - new firmware for the S9 is significant!!!! Pretty impressive! Thanks for the new info Shane :)
Thanks, Peter! I hope you're doing okay with the weather there mate! I need to catch up on your live stream today.
The S9 now seems very compelling. That new tiny lens seems perfect for an all around lens. Great review/updates!
high quality video as usual Shane! and yes removing the recording limit is a huge one for the S9!
Thanks, Richard! I will be catching up on your video this afternoon.
I have loved my S9 since launch (even though already owning the S5II) and this update will just confirm I made the right choice. Great pieces of kit and good video as always.
no hybrid zoom or multiple frame lines for s5ii is a bummer

I hope it gets that update as well. Hybrid zoom is one of the reasons the S9 is my travel camera.
I want to sound off my support for Hybrid-zoom on my S5IIx as well. Please and thanks.
New Lens and Firmware Updates makes the S9 seem more reasonable. Cheers!
thanks for the G9II firmware update.
Most disappointing G9 update I've had so far lol
Imagine i bought g9ii a week ago and upgraded the body and lens October 7 to a latest firmware so it can handle 25-50 1,7, and they popped up another one October 9😮..
Thanks for the review, Shane. I like your modification of the natural profile.
Thanks. I always found myself making small adjustments in editing and now I can just drop it out of the camera as a final output. It took a while to get it to look the way it does but I am happy with it :). Cheers.
Wow you are also a tech guy as well. I did not know that till today. I have been watching guitars and gears reviews only. 😅
Thanks for this! I will update my G9M2!
Thanks mate great supportive video as usual :)
Man that is a very useful focal length for a walkaround lens.
100% :)
+1 for S5IIx Hybrid Zoom
The Hybrid zoom is actually the best feature in this update

It looks to me like they are giving the goodies to the S9 perhaps as a way to boost S9 sales.

Hybrid zoom for the s5ii. Clearimage Zoom from Sony was a favorite feature before crossing to Lumix. Pretty please Panasonic. :) !!!!
As a GH6 user i feel sorry because it has got no new features and its value and price has dropped dramatically.
Nice!

I hate that they did not get the AF setting airplane in S5II and S5IIX but they put it in the S9. Cant understand why...
The last firmware update did improve the AF tracking compared to release, but yeah, hopefully in the next one they update it. :)

Has the S5ii update got the updated autofocus modes for cars as would be good for us, do we know if phase detect in 1080p
It hasn't got the latest update yet. Hopefully it gets pushed through at some point soon. It does have the car and motorcycle tracking though which came in on the last update.

Ikut

So is the new S9 firmware available yet?
Not seeing a link to it in video description or on the Panasonic website
It’s being realised on the 9th not sure which time zone that is it’ll be there pretty soon.
Does the S5II have the same hybrid zoom function as the S9?
Is the 1080 focus of the S5II better improved?
S5II and X don't have Hybrid zoom yet, no.
I can´t see any firmware update...
I don’t think the firmware is live yet. Maybe later on in the week as I am not seeing them.
Supposed to be on the 9th so hang in there. (probably US time)
did lumix s5ii already get the pdaf in 1080 record?
It has always had it in 24/25/30p but not in 50/60p for some reason.
Still the old firmware on the supplied link. Do you know when it will be available ?
Sometime on the 9th (probably US time)

I don't see the v3.1 update for the S5ii. I will check later today, as my S5ii arrives today. (Woohoo!)
I wasn't given the exact time, but it won't be far away now.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy The update appeared later. I got my S5ii today and updated it. 😎
Ulanzi Fan might work with the S9 keeping it cooler. Wish it had an EVF/Rangefinder Style like the Sony A7CII & A7CR cameras.

Hello,
What about full frame 1080p 50/60p af in S5II(X)? Does it still use contrast af?
Have you tested it? 🙂
Are you sure the DMW-XLR2 doesn’t get 32 bits float audio ? I’m on an add of the adapter and it says that it does ! Cheers
32-bit float only works with the GH7 right now. The new updates make the XLR2 work with the previous cameras but only for 4 channel audio.
Link provided does not show the new firmware version to update….
It will do pretty soon hang in there.
this is awesome but no multiple frame markers for the S5II but it is on the S9 is ridiculous.

pitty the added AF settings for cars and motorbikes didnt come to the S5II and S5IIX
Will the Lumix S9 heat up if I record video in 1080p for 4 hours of events??
Nothing much for the G9II...🙄
And absolutely nothing for my gh7…😵💫
Thanks for the update video! Question on the hybrid zoom, does the feature work when shooting in any of the resolutions with the open gate aspect ratio? Or is just when its 16:9 4k/FHD?
It won't work in 6k as it's using a sensor crop but it works in DCI4k, 4k and HD no problems.
