My thoughts: S9 small footprint largely disappears with the 12-60…it needs small lenses to make it work (maybe the Sigmas?), not really something you can use for most studio work given the short (!) recording limits (perfectly fine for short clips), does it make really make a difference having 30 luts vs 10…suspect most folks will use 1 or 2 (I may be incorrect). As far as FF it’s relatively small footprint (with a lens), fast to post to social media and can still produce some serious photos, especially handy for travel. Quite like it and most folks could work around its limitations (other than the lenses). It also seems fun to use…a big plus IMO. Great review! Curious how it would compare to something like an A7Cii, which has a better selection of small lenses I believe.
Even with a larger lens the camera itself is still small and comes up smaller and lighter than other cameras. What are limitations to some people are not to others. Not everyone has to have a small lens. And not having small lenses does not mean it “does not work.”
@@salat You purposely misconstrue my point and exaggerate for effect. Like a 100-600 is the only lens available. This response from you is exactly why UA-cam is so toxic. You can put a Summilux 35 1.4 on a Z9. Some people like pain. See it goes the other way too. There is nothing wrong with putting big lenses on small cameras. And just because someone has a small camera does not mean they will or have to or can’t put big lenses on it. Also you know well enough that most of the “huge” primes from Lumix and Sigma are not big at all. Not everything you like or do or dislike or don’t do is the same for everyone else. Don’t see how that is so hard to understand. By the way just cause you may need to workout 🏋️ to carry a 100-650 or whatever does not mean other people do. A lot of good workout programs on UA-cam. Not everyone thinks your worldview. 🙄
@@iamhassan9943 so why would they get the S9 over the S5II if they planned on putting a big lens on it anyway, the point here is that if weight and size are your primary concern, then you negate all the benefit you get by adding a big heavy lens. No one is saying you can't do it, they are saying why would you do that, when you could have the S5II, since weight must not have been that important anyway. The biggest selling point of the S9, its "portability", evaporates when you realize you can't put it in your pocket when you use it with a good lens in the L Mount system. So you ended up sacrificing a ton of features, and you didn't even get the payoff (a pocketable camera). The S5II is 250 grams more. For the person who cannot carry 250 grams more, then yes, the S9 truly is the perfect camera for their use case.
@@MaximoJoshua Again, reading is fundamental. What is a “selling point” for you may or may not be for someone else. Just because you want to throw something in a box does not mean it has to stay there. I don’t understand how you can’t see that! Putting a big lens on the S9 does not defeat anything. It just means you put a big lens on a camera. Also, someone will get the S9 over the S5II…because they want to….🤯😱. It does stake photos and videos you know. Again 🤯 a camera that takes photos! I know your mind is blown again! that someone would do something YOU think is nonsensical. Amazing how life works. 😂 Everyone thinks they know everything and arre always correct and know what people should and should not do! 🤦🏽♂️
Even with the 20-60mm lens the S9 doesn’t fit in pocket any more. But with the new pancake F8 lens it does though. All other “benefits” you mentioned can be neglected by the firmware update for the S5II but in any case don’t worth much considering such small difference in the price. The reality is that it can be a lot of fun to use this camera with some really small lens as a travel/street/occasional day-in day-out camera that is always in your pocket. I would love to have it. But for the price very close to the S5II? Meh…
hybrid zoom does NOT work @ 4K•60p!! not in my LUMIX S9. i thought it should be mentioned.. for some people it might matter!! Excellent review.. thank you!!!
Great video but I must say at the price point the s9 isnt a camera someone ''just getting into it'' will want to buy on price point alone. The Canon R50 will give them folks everything they need for a third of the price.
Thanks, Shane! I'm hoping for an S7 with an EVF (or w/Fuji's HVF...), but will probably get the dark silver S9 on sale. The Sigma fp is tricky to find at a good price now, but does have unlimited 4k recording for those who need this in a compact size.
Panasonic needs to make some good compact lenses for the S9 to make it more viable for the masses imo. Sony has some excellent tiny prime lenses for the A7C2 / ZVE1/10 cameras. I've been considering switching to Panasonic but there seems to be a real lack of compact lenses compared to what Sony have.

Some things you missed here...... The S9 is not Weather Sealed The EVF is a necessity on bright sunny days. The Dual Card slots are a game changer with the S5 MK 2. The S5ii is also drop proof where the S9 looks too fragile. The S9 does not have an Anti Glare LCD which is disappointing at that price point. The Cooler inside the S5ii is awesome... I would feel much better with a weather sealed Body and Lenses than the S9 which needs to be pampered like most of the Sony APSC bodies. I really don't do videos unless I am doing a 4K Timelapse. My choice would be the S5ii over the S9 and I would probably go with the Fuji with its FIXED lens over the S9 too.
Great review and comparison. I would to see more of S9 videos especially travelling content. You have any information about the new 18-40 mm lens? When is it coming out? By the way, what lens did you use for blurry background? it looked so creamy.
Hi mate. I shot this using (mostly) the 18mm f1.8 for the side shots and the 50mm f1.8 for everything else. I haven't heard any updates yet. I think it was scheduled for later this year or something like that. Hopefully, it comes out soon; the pancake lens left a lot of people underwhelmed.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy i agree we need samyang or sigma pancake lens. f2.8 is fine for a full frame sensor. Now that Nikon is opening up to Tamron and other third party lens manufacturers, Lumix should too before it is too late. They already lost their market by sticking with contract base autofocus. what is the link for your second channel you mentioned in this video ?
It's a weird camera: pro features for the amateur yet not enough pro features for the pro. Also, that kit lens is not pocketable anymore IMHO. A good pocket travel cam would probably have a built-in lens but that's probably frowned upon by the photography elite :)
S9 is a perfekt b camera to the s5 and i would love to own it. Its perfect for what its made to be. If there was the mft sensor and everything from the g9 in it it would be even better
@@TopshelfJunior have you tried? It's not exactly a compact camera experience then. It sucks to say it lightly and it wont exactly make you feel like taking pictures. If there was, he would probably had that lens mounted. But I dont get this camera... and thats fine. Just looked silly when he showed of the portability of a camera that cant take any pictures and then used a big ass lens the size of the camera. :)
@@OlaJustin Haven't tried yet ,but I plan on it ! And... if he had the 26mm pancake on there, it would have still fit. I'm sure there are other Panasonic lenses on the way, as well as Sigma also. I've also seen a ton of UA-camrs / influencers (on that Japan) trip, adapt vintage / small glass to the camera also, and that would fit in the jacket pocket also.
It would fit in that pocket no problems. The primes lenses are small. Like I said at the end, you can fit almost two of these for every S5 in a camera bag, in terms of size.
The S9 is the only no-grip classic designed digital camera other than the crazy expensive fully manual focusing Leica M10 and M11. Sigma has fantastic compact prime lenses for L mount: you should have borrowed the 17f4 or 45f2.8 for this demonstration to who this camera is meant for. The real competitors are the Sony A7C, Fujifilm X-T50, Leica M10, M11. Fujifilm X-T50 has almost no grip, it is not full frame but with its small f1.4 or f2 primes it is a very strong competitor especially since it has a decent EVF, too. The X-T50 is a bit less expensive, but not that much. I am totally brand agnostic just like most customers, I am looking for a no-grip, very small camera with very small lenses: S9 is absolutely an excellent possibility. S5 and other gigantic monsters are totally different animals, meaningless to compare them to S9. I have the A7III with the fantastic PZ28135f4OSS, no need another one in that category. It was the S9 that I've been waiting for 10 years since Sony invented the mirrorless FF market.
Thanks, Grant. It's such a great little camera! I am keeping an eye on Amazon this week to see what's going on. The GH6 is 56% off right now haha. The S9 is definitely at the front of mind for that guitar shop walkthrough series.
12:40 If this camera is for someone who is not professional and Just is getting into it. The price should reflect that. And not cost more than 1000usd. With the price it has now it is a professional camera, that's gutted.
Getting professional results and a camera for professionals are two different things. The sensor is the same, so it looks great. It doesn't mean it should be $200, it's just a good option for someone wanting the same look for a completely different overall use case. The price of anything won't be for everyone. :)
Great Comparison, do you have any lens recommendations for this camera? primarily for travel. I saw the sigma 17/4 and 35 as a small travel friendly lens. Or maybe other mounts using adapters. I hope you can creat a video recommendations for S9 lenses. thanks for great content.
Was going to purchase one of these Lumix cameras as I've been a Panasonic/Olympus user for over a decade but the Blackmagic Cine 6k Full Frame discount was just such a good deal I'd rather have one camera dedicated to video and having my older Canon 5DIII for stills and I'll sell off my older GH bodies since I really don't use them much.
Great video... How can I let Panasonic know that removing the "Multiple Exposure" feature from the S5 series and the New Micro 4/3 bodies, was such a bad idea. Do you know of a place we can submit feedback?
It would be nice if you can make a comparison video between the s5ii or a GH5 and the GH7 when filming a talking head video or just a close up video with both cameras and crop in 2 times, to see the difference which camera handles skin texture better. Which camera has better details rendering. I would very appreciate that because nobody else have done this test yet. It would make taking my decision much easier, if I'm going to upgrade to an S5ii or the GH7. Thank you mate
Before the Nikon Z6III announcement I might have kept the S5II on my considerations list, but not any more. The reduced rolling shutter and internal RAW options are worth the extra dollars especially since I have Z lenses from stills work I have done. Nevertheless I think there’s room for the S9 in my kit for personal filming and for other low budget projects where shooting separate verticals and horizontals would take up too much time and when short takes are sufficient. I think it will be a fun camera to have in my bag. Will I miss out of shutter angles and a few other video centric bits? Certainly. But the CFExpress B offload speeds are more than enough incentive to use the Nikon.
@@nocturnal1970 I’ve been shooting RAW on Blackmagic cameras for a long time and NRAW is similar in size. We shot 2 BMCC 6k Open Gate cameras yesterday, plus some NRAW closeups at 4k on my Z9. That was about 900GB combined for a full day of shooting.
I had an idea to use the HDMI output to output sound. There are some adapters to VGA, for example, and they have picture and audio different. But I'm not sure, will it actually work or not.
I believe the S5II and X will have a firmware update that will make it work with the Lumix Lab app. They announced it on their live stream a while back. Right now though, no the S9 has better app connectivity.
I hope that lumix will release an update very soon with AF for fhd in s5iix, As I use slowmotion fhd much, or if it's not possible, it would be fair from them to explain it why they don't do it.
Sony has a lot of compact lenses for full frame but the quality on their image is poor to say the least, problem with a larger sensor is always gonna be the lenses sadly, they can only be shrunk so much. And the S9 is not very good for photo regardless what anyone says, a camera with 26ms readout speed and no shutter mechanism, its just not good for pictures. I suppose for video it makes more sense, Sigma have a few excellent small primes for L-mount which would go good with the S9, its still big but its lightweight and that is a lot more important.
My Prediction…. So as we see the right lens on the S9 that screams compact…. Most if not all the complaints will go away. I have a personal application/use for it so I will be getting one soon as it discounts.. as it will have to eventually. So many APSC Cameras at $1300 to $1900 but people are losing their minds over a Full Frame release 😂
Complete bullshit that the S9 does 1080p dpaf while the S5 II can't. While it is a cheaper camera, I hope panasonic comes with a new firmware update to put some features from the GH7 and the S9 into the S5II.....
S9 as a MFT compact = fabulous S9 as Full Frame compact using big FF lenses = silly Come on Panasonic. Bring out an MFT version of the S9 and allow people the choice between genuinely compact or a bigger sensor.
You've seen the s-series lenses right? They aren't at all big. They are also quite lightweight. Once the new zoom comes out it'll be a great match for this thing. That said, I am hopeful for M43 version at some point.
0:50 The fact that you were demonstrating the S9's "compactness" and how you'd put it in your pocket WITHOUT a lens attached just made me laugh :=) The S9 is just a marketing brain fart - nothing else - maybe they can get rid of it with a huge price dump under $900, otherwise the S5II is the better option..
I sort of clarified that at the end. You can essentially fit two of these in a camera bag for every S5II. With the pancake lens it's very small. There's a new small zoom lens coming as well.
This "I can fit it into my pocket thing" is really bothering me, why the hell are you saying it? You can only do that if you don't put a lens on it. The grip sucks and it's way easier to drop, on top of the fact that it's not as well built as the S5ii. Yes it's a full frame camera on a budget that can be used professionally in certain limited situations. It's not trash, that's not what i'm saying, but stop promoting it for what it's not.
A 15 minute record limit is crazy unacceptable. The S9 is good for photos and quick little five minute video clips. But normal people shoot 20 minute shots, one hour takes, or just need the flexibility. The Lumix S5II is so much better for video.
Honest question, are there any videos on your YT where there are clips in the edit that run longer than 15min ?! Even if there aren't, did you shoot 15min clips+ on any of those videos ? Just wondering.
Imagine if you DID need to do that tho.. Not that hard to shoot for 10-14min, press stop. Then start another clip and do it all again. 15min+ in one clip is just something people complain about and not really use lol. IMO.
@@TopshelfJunior All your videos are 1 to 3 minutes long, and that's perfect for your style. But the VAST majority of youtubers don't make 2 minute videos. You asked if I shoot longer than 15 minutes at a time? The answer is yes. Every single video. And I'm not some special case unicorn either. Plus, that's not even touching on filming hour long interviews, weddings, or corporate gigs. Telling the client, "oh sorry my camera cut you off mid-sentence, run that again" is very unprofessional. Saying that every 15 minutes to a client is even worse. And the "just press stop and press start again" won't save you in that situation. You're still gonna have a blackout no matter how quick you are. And god help you if you just missed a vital part of a ceremony or a wedding. And if it's just me talking to camera, I have to run back and forth from the camera. That's extra mental bandwidth I'm dedicating to watching a timer, instead of focusing on what I'll say next. So a 15 minute record limit isn't "just something people complain about." It's a real life necessity for a huge number of youtubers. The gear is supposed to work for us, not work against us. I'm happy for people that only shoot 5 minute videos though. Could be a good deal for them.
@@TopshelfJunior It's between the S5iiX, A7Cii, and Z6iii at the moment. That 2k price range is tough to pick from right now, they're all great in slightly different ways.
Except it's too large for a travel camera. The S5ii doesn't do quite everything that the S9 does. Especially autofocus. There is no other anamorphic camera at that price point.
The S9 is so ergonomically perfect that Panasonic brought in Smallrig to design a removable hand grip before being released to the public. Red flag right there.
Smallrig works with all camera companies to get accessories ready for launch, this is nothing new. Same thing happened with the FX3 when Smallrig had HDMI clamps available, or cages for other cameras.

@@iamhassan9943 Sure. ofc you can put a 150-600mm on the S9 - some people like pain..
But with the new pancake
F8 lens it does though.
The R50 is good but it's pretty limiting if you're looking at 4k with good AF or 4k 50/60p with Autofocus.
Sigma has some good ones, for sure. Love the 45mm 2.8

what about bitrate video write speeds ? i heard s5iix has 4 times more ? how will it affect color grading ?
@@liquaard2824 The S5IIX has All-I and Pro-Res which the S5IIX and S9 don't do. You still get 4:2:2 10-bit in all of the cameras and they look identical in the same modes.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy ok , with prores and higher write i think s5iix will have more details and can be pushed during color grading
@@liquaard2824 That's correct but most people won't see much of a difference for posting on UA-cam. ProRes and ALL-I files are huge and you'll need a lot more storage.
I’m really hoping that enhanced zoom feature of the S9 eventually makes it to an S5ii firmware update.
Agree, then I get 937mm from my Lumix 70-300 f4.5-f5.6 which is a fabulous lens😊
🤞🏼
And the 100fps autofocus ( and fhd 50 full frame also )
Some things you missed here......
The S9 is not Weather Sealed
The EVF is a necessity on bright sunny days.
S9 for me, it fundamentally changes things...would love to have both though
Good comparison video! You have been busy and pumping out some awesome contents
Thanks, Richard. It's been comparing what I have here on hand. :)
S9 is a perfekt b camera to the s5 and i would love to own it. Its perfect for what its made to be. If there was the mft sensor and everything from the g9 in it it would be even better
How would S9 be a b camera to S5 when it is better?

Why you didnt try and put it in your pocket with the lens on?
Yeah, that kind of removes the size argument... Big ass FF lenses. 😂
Could easily see somebody being able to put the camera in one jacket pocket, and a lens in the other..
@@TopshelfJunior have you tried? It's not exactly a compact camera experience then. It sucks to say it lightly and it wont exactly make you feel like taking pictures.
But yes, it can be done... once in a lifetime and then never again by anyone who tried ever. ;)
But the point was that there arent really any good lenses out there that is a natural choice, from a store packaged as a deal.
Great Video Shane - I think a 2nd S9 for In The Blues would be a great investment - Especially for all the on location shop stuff you do!!!
Thanks, Grant. It's such a great little camera! I am keeping an eye on Amazon this week to see what's going on. The GH6 is 56% off right now haha. The S9 is definitely at the front of mind for that guitar shop walkthrough series.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Wow - I just looked at Amazon!!! lol … Now that’s a deal
People are getting iPhone Pros for it’s camera, those phones are $1300+
Great Comparison, do you have any lens recommendations for this camera? primarily for travel.
The S9 is a nice cam,but i have the GX9 with more specs. For fullframe user is this cam ok for travelling.
What lens you use for filming this video?
LUMIX S Series 24 and 50mm F1.8, from memory.
what lens you are using in this video?
thiniking of buying the s9 due to the compact size but was wondering if it can shoot in bulb mode?
It would be nice if you can make a comparison video between the s5ii or a GH5 and the GH7 when filming a talking head video or just a close up video with both cameras and crop in 2 times, to see the difference which camera handles skin texture better. Which camera has better details rendering. I would very appreciate that because nobody else have done this test yet. It would make taking my decision much easier, if I'm going to upgrade to an S5ii or the GH7. Thank you mate
did you enjoy the trip to Japan for the launch of the S9....?
It was an awesome trip to test the gear in the real world. Japan is beautiful. If you missed my video, check out the S9 review I posted :)
@@GeekyNerdyTechy will do. cheers.
What use are you going to have for internal RAW? 1TB for 20 mins or something?
@@nocturnal1970 I’ve been shooting RAW on Blackmagic cameras for a long time and NRAW is similar in size. We shot 2 BMCC 6k Open Gate cameras yesterday, plus some NRAW closeups at 4k on my Z9. That was about 900GB combined for a full day of shooting.
I had an idea to use the HDMI output to output sound. There are some adapters to VGA, for example, and they have picture and audio different. But I'm not sure, will it actually work or not.
oh woah i didnt know you did camera videos on a different channel too

Do you know crop size Panasonic s9 in high mode EIS?
1 SD card slot and limited record times is the true crippling factor of this camera IMO. It still shoots some beautiful looking video however.
Honest question.. How long is the longest video on your YT page ? Did you ever need a 15min+ clip to make the vid ?
If this camera had global shutter and a hot shoe it wouldve damn near been pefect
i really hope the s5ii gets pdaf on s&q, i only figured it out when i got it for some time since you dont really hear it anywhere.
Does the s5 MK2 has seamless software feature like the new s9?
I believe the S5II and X will have a firmware update that will make it work with the Lumix Lab app. They announced it on their live stream a while back. Right now though, no the S9 has better app connectivity.
I hope that lumix will release an update very soon with AF for fhd in s5iix, As I use slowmotion fhd much, or if it's not possible, it would be fair from them to explain it why they don't do it.
Perfect travel camera.....for me
😊
I never suggest anyone to buy a camera with 10 minutes limited recording.
Complete bullshit that the S9 does 1080p dpaf while the S5 II can't. While it is a cheaper camera, I hope panasonic comes with a new firmware update to put some features from the GH7 and the S9 into the S5II.....
I just spoke about this on my live stream, it's ridiculous. :(
Always love s9

It comes out in Australia on June 24 I think.
Today in the US.

Great review
S9 as a MFT compact = fabulous
S9 as Full Frame compact using big FF lenses = silly
Come on Panasonic.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy They are still bigger than MFT.
Low light?
It's great in low light. I showcased that on my review.
😂 Thank god the angry professionals are here to set the record straight. Lighten up snowflake. ❄️
@@GeekyNerdyTechy guess it is pocketable and i’m wrong.
Why didn't Panasonic place air-flow system in the Lumix S9? Have heard that this camera overheats. Too bad, that's very sad. 😎😎
@@65Drums Ok, got it. So when are you purchasing an S5ii or S5iiX ?
@@TopshelfJunior It's between the S5iiX, A7Cii, and Z6iii at the moment. That 2k price range is tough to pick from right now, they're all great in slightly different ways.
To sum up the video. S9 is a expensive toy, S5ii does everything the s9 should
Except it's too large for a travel camera. The S5ii doesn't do quite everything that the S9 does. Especially autofocus. There is no other anamorphic camera at that price point.

The S9 is so ergonomically perfect that Panasonic brought in Smallrig to design a removable hand grip before being released to the public.
