100%. I'm a professional photographer and I still feel like i'm constantly learning new things with these channels and appreciate the sincerity and passion behind all the production value. About to buy my 1st film camera in 20+ years and David is definitely partially responsible haha
Hey David 👋🏼 I actually work for Fujifilm and I really love these videos and you covered a lot and made it simple for everyone to understand. I will make sure to mention to my team about wanting an updated GFX 50R Body Style (can’t promise anything 🤣) and to mention about the bind sensor to have a lower megapixel for low light performance 😁👍🏼
@@selishots I am a Tech Rep. I do all the training of the cameras and lenses in my area that I cover so I need to know about all the APSC and Medium Format Cameras which means, I have and use them all. Visiting all the camera stores and attending trade shows
As someone who’s a photography hobbyist who’s not that well-versed yet, David always manages to explain photography (and videography) in such a way that it’s easy to digest and it actually excites you. Everything’s also informative and well researched. Mad props to him and huge thanks to The Studio for allowing him to share his passion to the MKBHD and Studio community!
Only criticism I have is that this video is not nearly as long as it should be. I love David's photography as it's a really beautiful blend of street, travel and landscape photos and he exceeds at both photography and compelling video story telling. I do have a few more questions regarding the camera. Has the autofocus improved over the mk. 1? I often heard that this was slow and really not reliable so I'd love to hear if there was an improvement in that department. Also, how's the general performance, overheating when it comes to high res video etc...
Hey, I actually work for Fujifilm and the AF has been seriously improved. It has Phase + Contrast AF. 425 AF Points and it has Face and Eye Tracking + Subject tracking (Animal, Bird, Automobile, Motorcycle/Bike, Airplane, and Train). It overall performs much faster and accurate due to the new Sensor and Processor. I've tested shooting in 8K ProRes HQ internally and no issues indoors. For outside, we do offer an accessory, the Cooling Fan. It screws onto the back and has connector pins so you can control the fan speed in the camera setting and it helps a ton. That is going for $199, I hope this helps 😁
The autofocus is fast but definitely not quite as reliable as a smaller-sensored camera. I was testing a beta firmware version so it's hard to really judge performance. I used it up against the GFX 100 and it's definitely very improved, but I'm hoping the final version makes some improvements. I'm going to ask Fujifilm for a retail unit and update people on that end. Cheers!
I don’t know to much about photography, but I enjoy seen someone happy about their passion. I didn’t understand half of the terms but I enjoyed the video
I actually laughed when you explained that cinema turned to a wide format after TV pretty much adopted 4:3 format, because I felt like we're seeing the same thing again after IMAX adopting 1.43:1 and using that as an incentive for us to go watch IMAX movie in the theater instead of our widescreen monitors and TVs 😂
Bought my first DSLR (second hand) and took a photography course just because of the David’s video and his passion of the photography Thank you for that, I have a nice hobby now that will store my life in a pictures
Give David his own channel! His camera work is just so fascinating and he's so enthusiastic talking about it! Would love to see more and more frequently!
This is will be my first MF and gets here next week with the new 55. I passed on the grip but I'm thinking I may want that too after watching you with it. I'm pretty stoked to dive into it. And no idea how I haven't run across your channel before. Awesome work!
More camera videos please! You did such a great job explaining this camera and everything surrounding it. The editing was also super sharp too. More camera videos like this!!
Amazing video, David! I love your camera videos because you explain everything in such a simple and easy-to-understand way. The graphics are very well done, too. They really help with visualizing what you're talking about. I'm excited to see more videos like this in the future!
I think my comments is just gonna be drowned here... never the less I always found myself learning lots of things every time David explaining about camera, lens, photography and the whole bunch of technical things in small bites, easy to digest. Enjoyful as always.
I absolutely swear, David!! Your passion and enthusiasm shine through when tackling complex photography/videography and camera topics. It not only makes them enjoyable to comprehend but also helps most viewers truly appreciate them. 👏📸 Keep up the fantastic work! You're onto something truly special! 🌟
The stylish design of it with the more angular accents is just so damn good. I also think they did the right choice by removing the built-in vertical grip and making it optional instead, the vertical grip on GFX100 was a bit awkward anyway.
Oh David thanks so much for covering this someone handed me a Fugi a while ago and loved it.And then later on.Since I have had Cameras on my possession since I was three . So happy for someone else to show what they are capable of.💯✌️
Great breakdown - so much more practical info than I've seen in other reviews. I'm sold on this as my next camera - being able to adapt so many different types of lense to this amazing body is totally droolworthy!
This is one of those cases where I don't have a camera, I don't intend to buy a camera and I know very little about cameras but was super immersed in this video! Amazing content, congrats!
That 8k 2.761:1 ratio with anamorphic x2 is Ultra Panavision 70... To get that you normally need a Alexa 65, and that costs 10,000 without the lense to rent. That's v. impressive.
I’m so glad I found this channel. It started with MKBHD, then the podcast, then (liking David’s commentary), I followed him on Instagram and found out about his passion for cameras, which led me here. Love it!
Dude I'm trying to get into everything cameras, videography, cinematography and this is one of the first videos i've watched explaining things minus short films etc and you have a way of making something insane like a 7.5k camera full of features into an understandable bite sized video. Please make more like this maybe even a how to start for a beginner !
6:35 But the anamorphic mode on the GFX is only using a FF crop, right? I read somewhere that anamorphic on the GFX does not let you use the whole sensor. If so, then anamorphic mode on the GFX is no different than anamorphic mode on, say, Lumix S5iix.
hey David. I have to admit I really love the videos you're making. They are so well structured and organized. You always find a way to break the topic down for us in such a manner, that I don't feel like an idiot watching something I had no idea existed :) Thanks for the video, cheers.
I saw the video pop up. Wanted to watch, had to pause cause I knew I wanted to pay close attention to all the details. David you didn’t fail to deliver. Bravo. I am not a camera expert but you explained it well for a noob like me to at least get a grasp of the idea and tech in this beast 👍🏼👍🏼
I loooove the depth of GFX pictures. The look of medium format is something else. I'm still waiting to see when they'll release the "Fuji Omega" modular camera they showed once.
I like that David wears a Casio AE1200 with a strap and dial he probably modded on his own. Small details like these are what make a review stand out to me. What a guy.
Thank you David. I’ve been struggling with the value of upgrading my 4 year old GFX100 to the GFX100 II, my main disappointment has been the lack of any real sensor improvement. Your video has made a good case for the “second”… so I may just shell out and get it. However being an old film rangefinder guy I’d love to see a GFX100R!
I'm a huge Fuji fanboy, but I have to say I was pretty disappointed with this release: LIKES: - The design is 10/10. Sexy AsF. - Improved Autofocus DISLIKES: - Sensor is still too slow to utilize medium format for video (either lots of rolling shutter or uses a big crop which defeats the purpose of medium format) - Worse or comparable photo quality to the cheaper 100S (faster sensors typically have worse dynamic range) - No dual CFX slots; anyone spending this much on cameras and lenses is going to want redundant cards, and the SD card slot is going to mean you're not going to be able to have redundant storage in certain modes that require too much bandwidth. People spending well over $1000 on camera gear are not going to gripe about the extra cost of CFX cards. Basically, it's still too slow to be seriously considered for any professional fast shooting or video, and doesn't offer much if any improvement in photo quality over the much cheaper 100S. I can't think of any reason to get this over the older and cheaper 100S.
So you are the one the Petapixel Guys saw walking around with the 100 II at the Apple event. They mentioned seeing it in a recent podcast, but didn't say who they saw handling it.
such a great video. some of those pictures, if not all, actually, are so striking. really brings out emotions. also the colours of that film simulation are insane.
Good review, I love the direction Fujifilm is heading with this camera. Would love to see more video footage with that Mecury lens. Fun fact: I preordered the GFX100 II and the Atlas Mercury lenses at launch.
It doesn’t kill it for video. It really comes down to what you are shooting. Would it be the best choice for high speed action? No. But what precludes this from being a viable option for a talking head shot?… Or a narrative piece? Choose your tools appropriately.

The IMAX aspect ratio is inherent to the format. It’s 15 perforations of 70mm film. They didn’t ‘adopt’ anything.
