Great video Shane, covered all the points I love about using the S5II. On the 4 channel audio issue, I noticed you edit with FCP. You probably know this but you can select a box to disable any empty audio channels when importing clips which solves that issue easily. I leave that on now I use as S5II. I’m guessing other NLEs like DaVinci or Premiere might have similar options on import.
That white balance feature on the Sony cameras drove me nuts! Glad it wasn't just me! Great camera, best value in all camera tech IMO. So good I bought 2!
I don't shoot a lot of slow motion. But, having PDAF at 60p and 120p would be nice. I'm hoping they can change that with a firmware update. Since the S9 has the same sensor, I would hope it that such a change is possible. That being said, I use DaVinci Resolve for all of my editing, color grading and visual effects work for my videos, And Resolve has fantastic tools for slowing footage down in post without a noticeable loss in image quality. The few times I've done that, the results have been very good. As far as adding camera info to an external monitor, that really isn't an issue for me. The last time I had a camera transfer info to an external monitor, the information was baked into the footage. Even still, I can look down at the camera's LCD screen and see the information, settings and all, quite easily, Even on bright days, the text on the LCD still stands out from what I'm used to seeing. I also have a velcro sun hood that I can quickly strap onto the camera's monitor and make it easier to see the screen. I have the S5ii, and to be honest, it is my favorite camera to date. The image quality is noticeably better than the FX30 I had before. And LUMIX skin tones and overall color rendition is as close to what I see with my own eyes as I've ever seen from a camera.
I’ve had my S5M2X a month. I got a great deal buying the 14-28, 20-60, and the 70-300. The 14-28 was essentially free, 20-60 only $200 in the package and the 70-300 was $100 off, Great value. The viewfinder is a bunch better than the Fuji xt4 I had. The focus in either mode is better than the Fuji. The manual focus works great, I’ve set mine to linear focus with 300 degree throw. The zoom lenses are bigger, but are meeting my needs for my personal travel photography. The ability to have higher iso making good images makes up for any advantage primes might have for me. The weight difference from Fuji to this is not that noticeable. The high res mode is fascinating. I’ve got much to learn about all the different modes and settings for sure. I got the X 80% for the blacked out look, and 20% for the upgraded video. Peace

I think only BlackMagic will write tomecode as Metadata to the file when capturing audio timecode through the 3.5mm audio port. It would be great if Panasonic could do that too. Even better would be dedicated timecode in port, as well as a second usb-c port so we can have power via usb- as well as record to SSD.

100% - you can shoot video or photos in any number of automatic modes. It's worth understanding the basics about photo aspect ratios and video modes but you can absolutely shoot with automatic mode. The camera I used to film this was shot in Aperture priority mode which is mostly auto.
I just got one of these with the kit lens and the panny 85mm s prime. I can't help but think that I need one faster wider prime. As a compliment to these two lenses what would you suggest. The 35 or 50 or something else? I could probably afford one other prime. The f2.8 zooms are out of my budget right now.
About the AF, I find it strange that - to my knowledge - there is no official information from Panasonic stating in which modes/resolutions/framerates the AF defaults back to DFD instead of PDAF. This should really be part of the manual, and the fact that various youtubers and others had to find this out by various tests gives the impression that Panasonic was deliberately not transparent about this restriction.
@GeekyNerdyTechy I have it all the time. On some wide angles more than tele. I sometimes work with mist filters. Many time i have to make sure fine patterns etc. are just out of focus. That is pretty tough with autofocus enabled. With moving/panning shots i need to induce just enough motion blur to avoid the moire. Try filming your monitor, objects with fine lines close to each other or fine patterns.
Id agree about the grip feeling good, but no one talks about the difference between the original G9 vs this newer style. The G9 was perfect. Id put my a6700 2nd and this 3rd.
I saw you mention the white noise issue with the 4 channel audio which I found to be true. I still find the noise to be higher than what I would have expected even with -18 db and external wireless mics. Some say there is an issue with the preamp being excessively noisy due to under spec coils. Any thoughts on the white noise issue?
The audio is not that noisy. I think a lot of people must have high white noise wireless packs which is pretty common. I've tested a bunch of wireless packs and not all of them are dead quiet. Once you disable the second stereo channel, the audio seems no worse than anything else I have used.
If live streaming or Recording long form Video how would you recommend powering this? I have a bunch of NPF batteries but cant find a plate with USB PD that anyone has confirmed would work . I'm not in a position to buy try and return..
USB-PD or dummy battery work fine on this. I use mine all the time for that kind of thing. My S5II multi-camera rig runs off Dummy Batteries that I got off eBay. If you use USB-C PD it needs to support 9V 3A.
I am a little surprised that after one and a half years, your criticisms are still the same. Which means that Panasonic has not addressed the main issues via firmware update. Wasn’t Panasonic supposed to be good at delivering substantial updates?
They added a lot to this camera over the last 12 months. The new autofocus modes, IBIS, and Real-Time LUT are all great upgrades. My main gripes are with the AF Modes for S&Q and the HD50/60p. Hopefully they get it sorted out.
They have the full-frame Panasonic/Leica series ones or you can just buy any Leica or Sigma lens if you need to. Their S Series of primes are great for video production. I've used them a lot over the last couple of years now and perform really well. They might not look as fancy as some of the others out there, but they are solid performers.
My only problem with my G85 is that it's Micro Four Thirds so if I ever buy another digital camera it'll probably be an S5 (unless Panasonic comes out with something better by the time I'd have enough money to upgrade my camera which seems fairly likely considering how broke I am). Those things look awesome.

The 50 1.8 is soft wide open.
My biggest problem is the Moire. And it kills me sometimes. But i still shoot product videos with the camera for a big hardware brand.
I haven’t had an issue with it unless I’m shooting in 1080p at 180fps.
For the real time lut part, is it possible to adjust the opacity of the lut in camera?
Yep, you can do that in camera. If you visit the photo styles menu you can easily click down and adjust the slider to any opacity from 10-100%.
It’s basically the same sensor as the original S5 but with PDAF
Similar sensor, but not the same. PDAF is part of the sensor design on a hardware level I think.
@@GeekyNerdyTechythanks you for your response, great video
If live streaming or Recording long form Video how would you recommend powering this? I have a bunch of NPF batteries but cant find a plate with USB PD that anyone has confirmed would work . I'm not in a position to buy try and return..
USB-PD or dummy battery work fine on this. I use mine all the time for that kind of thing. My S5II multi-camera rig runs off Dummy Batteries that I got off eBay. If you use USB-C PD it needs to support 9V 3A.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks .. I'd appreciate if you show that rig some time in the future
1:25 he likes bokeh almost as much as tony northup!
F1.8 on a 35mm lens. If I only I had the F1.2 glory of TN. 😂
Did you use the S9 for filming this video ?
first 2 seconds of the video, its says shot on S9 and S5IIX.
Yep
You may have said it, but what camera was used to shoot this video?
0:00 - LUMIX S9 :-)
There is one bug in this camera for photography. Google S5II Electronic Shutter (30fps) Delay
You still on Oahu?
Sadly, no. I am back home now. I wish I could have stayed there haha. :)
@ lol gotcha. I was gonna give you some tips on nice places to check out but it’s all good.
@@KauaiianTunda Cheers! We will no doubt get back there in a few years all being well. It's a beautiful place :)
🔥
Thanks!
Good quality. I wish Panasonic had made more professional lenses.
@schow2020 😂
There are plenty of pro lenses for panny's L mount
😍
My only problem with my G85 is that it's Micro Four Thirds so if I ever buy another digital camera it'll probably be an S5 (unless Panasonic comes out with something better by the time I'd have enough money to upgrade my camera which seems fairly likely considering how broke I am). Those things look awesome.
