  • The good, the bad and the slow. After 1 year of ownership I feel I have lived with my Toyota GT86 enough to give you a good insight into owning one of the Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S/ Toyota GT86 platform cars.

@@marcusprothero8349 i think for me was better handling and also it would be like an easy RWD car to learn the ropes for more higher powered ones in future. I also was looking at the 2006-2010 st3s and i had heard that they can often get problems with headgasket etc. But having said that the gt86 also has its fair share of potential issues. Although the st3 will gap u any day of the week i think the gt86 is just more fun to drive and theres still the possibility of turboing it in the future and then youll be able to run about 280bhp quite safely on stock internals and even more with forging/uprated parts etc.

I daily a 15yr old corolla (125hpish) so the brz feels plenty fast for my weekend fun so far in comparison. I think the big difference is that you've been in a lot of cars. Me I've been in golfs, jettas, "shiroko", sentras, altimas, mostly. I feel you get over the speed limit to fast even with a 125hp corolla lol. Like you loved the look since it came out and I got some real nice back roads to chill in my end of the woods and plans are new wheels/tires and exhaust only as future mods. I've got an APR Stage 1 MK7 Golf R and came here while looking at BRZ/GT86 videos. The video has been very useful for me, I have the same issue with my car that you had, it doesn't flow, its all point and squirt, you're often going to fast for the road before you hit the next bend, then its slow down, round the corner then nail it out again. The Golf R is so good its bad! Hence I was looking at BRZ/GT86 but was worried about the lack of power and every video i've seen mentions it, but lets be fair, its the same weight and power as the original UK Civic Type R and we all loved them! I'm still unsure what to do, maybe wait for the 2021 BRZ which should have a turbo and 250hp, this may change things and also make it easier to tune without spending £5k on a turbo kit!

So right about DRIVE a car. I was looking at z4’s and some other assorted bmw’s, s2000’s, mx5’s, 360z, caymans and a handful of classics. It was going for some test drives that made up my mind. On paper I would have had a cayman or z4m. But road driving a cayman or z4m = more speeding tickets.
I luv the simple rwd low grip good chassis.
Worst thing about the car is the beep when the boots been open for a few seconds. Sound system is crap. I found power is ok, but the delivery is crap, I will put ULH on asap and fix the torque dip.

Most honest review I've seen on 1 of these nice video. I owed 1 of these 4 year half and I don't think 200bhp is the problem with them it's the power delivery that's the issue when u hit about 4000rpm the car just dies and only picks back up at about 5500rpm so very short power window. I bought a 2017 2lt mx5 with 155 bhp and it is faster than a gt86 because it makes power all of the rev range no flat spots. I loved it so much I bought myself a 2019 rf mx5 with the new 2lt 181 bhp engine which revs to 7500 redline and I just think its perfect engine for the car

nice review, i like the gt86 but i don´t really like boxer motors so i would never get one. but anyway i think that prices for tuning parts are more expensive than ever and in germany at least every tiny bit you modify needs to be approved by the tüv. i think back in the 80´s and 90´s everything was easier to modify, cheaper and had less regulations.

As an owner for 2 years - Should you get a GT86 ? Yes and No
Yes - Like the man said, back to basics car. Everything is there for you, the mods, forums, parts readily available etc. Its fun to drive in stock or even slightly modified form. People complained about it being slow, well no shit yeah. The AE86 was slow af too and people still love it for being basic af but if I had to say why it became popular, Initial D. Really fun around twisties and corners, can be good in straights if you mod and tune it properly, doesn't cost a bomb to do so too. Overall its a very good tuner car or at least to get into motorsport.
No - Its a basic all rounder car. You get bored of it because it does not excel in everything it does well. Weight ? Slightly better than the average coupe. Power ? Loses to a 350Z but hey at least it is dirt cheap to run on maintenance and fuel. Handling ? A lotus handles a lot better but it is not as comfortable to sit in. Comfort ? I have sat in a Prius that feels much more comfortable than this. Also a lot of people seem to use it for drift scenes which IMO is not what the car was intended for. Sure its a bit tail happy but with how short the base is, it grips so fucking hard that you really need to push it to slide the end out.
TLDR; I would buy it again in a heartbeat but would rather have the ZC33s, a 4 seater pocket rocket is still a better bargain than a 2+2

Cheers for information I am yet to drive a GT86 but driven it’s big bro GR Supra. Hoping it won’t creak as much as my 2004 Celica facelift :). I’m getting a 2017 GT86 in Jan so quite excited. Thanks for info and finance stuff you pay. I’m going PCP for about 16grand I think with deposit of about £1,600 and £180 month PCP. Vid idea how easy to lose back end in GT86.

Don't know how much you could modify but it would still be reasonably quick and the interior better quality than the Toyota. Insurance would be reasonable you could also stance it if that's your thing.

Do you guys have S15? We don't even have JDM cars in my country. The best you can find the old Civic.

@@Barni2212 yeah Australia has most JDM cars. They are probably the main type on the road besides Australian cars like Holden. I’ve seen them all in my small town

I'd definitely rather getting a 90s JDM instead, but since I live in London ULEZ stops me, and this is the next best thing

Oh man, i have a 1992 mr2 for about 7 months so far and its my first car. I love how it looks but im scared to keep it for very long because sometimes I need to fix small things on it but for example the syncros are very worn in 2nd gear but I cant find a lot of parts for it in my country. I think i'll put it up for sale and if anyone wants to buy it I think i'll get a GT86 since theres a lot of costumizability and everyone says its fun to drive!

I owed 1,for year half and there awful slow the power delivery is awful they start off OK once u hit about 4000 rpm they die until about 5500 rpm then your hitting the red line at 7k. People keep saying 200 bhp under powered for the car. The amount of power isn't the issue it the power delivery. I bought a 2016 mx5 2lt with 155bhp and it beats a gt86 because it makes power all of the rev range and handles brilliant. Loved it that much I now have a 2019 rf 2lt with 181bhp and its a fantastic engine pulls all the way 2 7500rpm proper old school engine

Mate I've got a 19 BRZ. Don't get a GT86/Brz! I made such a mistake coming from bimmers. It's such an overrated car with a weak character less engine, crappy epas steering. Don't get me wrong it's got a good chassis with extremely low cog but it would've been an amazing car if they'd given it an inline 4 with around 250bhp and hyd steering..

Fuel consumption = £30 every three days. Great, perhaps that metric should be on the official figures. Is that urban, extra urban, or world of warcraft. WTAF
