  • We've previously touched on the importance of compressing the golf ball with your irons to make solid contact. In this video Mac, with the help of Ian, explains the drills he uses with golfers on the lesson tee to help gain distance, and control trajectory.
Mac and Ian also help explain how to bring the lessons learned from compressing irons to the long game and the driver to help breakdown the swing keys to hit it longer and straighter off the tee.

Need to do a part 3 solely dedicated to driver. I, too, as a RH, employ a stronger face in the takeaway by early setting my wrist and feeling my trail palm face more to the ground to get that face-for all shots off the turf. Doesn’t really work for driver, so I’ve gone more to a “straight back” wrist set and playing a fade with driver. Because I add loft to my driver and hit up, I think I need a lower loft to start with to get the spin loft lower. Be curious to hear more on driver because I think this was more geared to approach shots off the turf.

TXG are back with Mac on board and teaming up with Ian. I think this format with two people and Ian providing the technical analysis and Mac demonstrating as required is better than the 3 person panel with Ian hitting the ball and Mike and RB behind the scenes providing the insights. Ian has hit the sweet spot now

Great breakdown and fantastic information. I don't hear the word "compression" enough in the striking of golf balls enough I feel. I'm a proud son of a PGA pro from the 70's and 80's and my dad always had me hitting slower then progressively higher speed half irons with focus on bowing my wrist, shaft lean and feeling the shaft "bend" then "activate" through impact. When you "Squish" the ball you know it! Thank you again for such a great lesson and channel 🤙!

This and the Gareth wedge video were game changers for me. Tried this out just for fun expecting nothing and was shocked to see the most consistent iron swings on the range I have ever had! Dang guys, some of your stuff is brilliant. Oddly enough I used the concept the shorten my swing and minimize wrist movement for better consistency without losing distance. My old shot now feels like giant flop shot like you said.

What another great video! I tried this on the range today after this helped me assess that I probably try to use my wrist too much in the swing to try and “generate power” and instead my consistency of direction is awful, especially a huge right shot that fades further away. I could just tell that the ball contact was more crisp not only on the ball but the ground as well. I can’t wait to use this on the course with my golf balls to see just how much of a difference it’ll hopefully make 👍🏼

Another excellent piece of explanation and execution from the team….extremely well explained and demonstrated by you both. My one issue is having the mobility to deliver enough rotation to recreate the required moves. Being an older golfer who was brought up with “old school” mechanics does however help my inability to rotate enough…I have to use my hands much more to square the face on delivery but seriously wish I could employ the techniques you show so well. As soon as Santa brings me some new hips, I’ll be doing this.

I now do same with woods and hybrid and also seen big improvements in quality of strike and consistency. I'm glad you covered the driver too as that was a question I was going to ask. I have been concentrating on trying to get the driver head ahead of my hands at impact. So this will be something I'll keep working on. Thanks for these videos.

Absolutely agree. The illustration of the relationship between compression and dynamic loft in the iron swing was absolutely a light bulb moment for me. Iron shots feel categorically different now. I didn’t quite understand how to use dynamic loft to compress a driver strike though. Not clear whether there’s supposed to be reverse shaft lean, greater dynamic loft, or smaller dynamic loft. Apologize for my own lack of understanding, but I’ve been going over this video several times and can’t seem to quite figure out the dynamics of the driver shot. A separate video would be desperately appreciated!!!!!!

Clay Ballard does a great teaching of how to get that inflection of the wrists. For me, retraining my lead wrist for iron/woods compression took some time to get that muscle memory, but boy, does it make a great difference on performance.

Worth mentioning that the strong club face position at 1st parallel is way easier to work with if you have a more neutral grip. If you try it with a strong grip you have to work harder to stop pulls and hooks.

Great information and revelations for those who do not fully understand how rights and lefts must balance one another to hit the ball where you desire. The "old school" toe up swing requires more hand action to square the face and prevent a block or slice, and the "new age" swing requires the body to square the face to keep from pulling or hooking. Either swing can attain compression. It's simply understanding which right and left forces your swing has. For me, I'm an "old school" swing player and coach. I have plenty of compression, speed, and have the proper direction. Some of my players prefer, and are taught by their instructors, the "new age" swing and get the same results. Neither is right or wrong; it's just essential again to understand what YOUR right and left forces are and knowing how to use them to get the ball on line properly.

The iron lesson was really nice and simple, perfectly understandable for a not so bright person like myself. I could not resist trying it in my net with a G80 set up. The ball speed jumped up the distance increased and the effort remained the same.
I will work on this, the full swing flop shot has its place, but when I get to a range and see the flight of this I will then implement it fully.

Really interesting video this. Have struggled with hitting a 'high ball' for a couple of years and this I believe; has explained exactly why I have that issue. I used to naturally hit my 8i about 160. I currently hit it 140 which is because of a swing change, funnily enough. None of the lessons I've had have touched on wrist angle, only the position I need to be in at the point of striking the ball. At the range in 55 minutes so I shall be giving this some serious work.
I love the work you guys do with the equipment, and that's all still super interesting, but these in depth information videos about how to use the clubs are just as important in my eyes.

This was a great lesson on iron play. Couldn’t be any clearer. Could you do the same on hitting drives?

I also have a 9° stealth cranked down all the way, because I tee it high with a +6-7° AoA. It’s a monster! Definitely going to use Mac’s drill as a warm up for my irons, as I’m making the transition from the ol slappy swing to the squared face compression swing. It’s adding 20-30yds to my irons when I get it right!

That tip with the driver head getting to the finish line before the hands was incredible. So clear. Mac hit his 8 iron on the non compressed shot the same distance as me and I have roughly the same swing speed on that shot. I can't believe with the same swing speed he belts it out to my 5 iron distance. I don't know if I need this flying around before the medal on Saturday hahah
