Starting playing golf 3 years ago, and bumped into this video today. I have been casting and for the life of me have been unable to "hold on to the lag" no matter how hard I tried. I went to the range today with this drill and have hit the crisppiest shots of my life across all my clubs, and have hit them further! A million thanks from South Africa.
I guy I know off +2 does this before every shot. I never understood why. He hits his irons like a tour pro and now I know why. I will try to copy this, thanks
This is huge for me, in just getting back into the game after a 4-year hiatus. New clubs and don’t want to get frustrated trying to recreate the ball striking I used to have. Thanks as always, Chris!
I love your videos. There is a lot to take in and I still hit a lot of bad shots, but practicing one of your tips everyday has radically improved my swing. Thanks, Chris!
My hanger should be here today. I appreciate you’re videos man, they’re very helpful, and not too technical like a lot of videos in which I can’t even comprehend what’s going on.
@@ChrisRyanGolf honestly mate, I started playing in April and trying to find simple drills and instructions is a nightmare. Literally been binge watching your channel, keep it coming.
dude, feels like you were looking at my swing while making this vid. great stuff, really like what you do and how you explain stuff. getting to the origins of issues is key. well done sir!
This is the best thing I’ve ever seen Chris, as an habitual caster of the club for 20 years, my 7i maxing out at 107 yards can’t wait to get cracking at this, didn’t know any of this by the way until I got a irange mini and filmed myself.. thanks Chris, this is gold to me..
Thx Chris. All your videos are very helpful and appreciated. I always recommend your channel to us weekend warriors. This is an area I have struggled with more than any other aspect of the swing. Was sad to see this fault on video again and again. Do you recommend that your students maybe use the trail index finger to harness and release lag through impact?
Went to the 2022 PGA here in OKlahoma and noticed the pro's finish was belt buckle to the target and right foot totally off the the ground just like your last ball you hit in your video. Love your video instructions. Thank you.
🏌🏽♀️Man, your on point as usual…I got a hanger a couple years ago and took it out yesterday to work on your concepts and bam, you went over at the end and confirmed what I thought I needed to feel! ⛳️
Such a great video - Your 'feeling' can sometimes betray you in golf. I feel like i'm doing it right but the inconstancy in my shots prove i'm not. stripping my swing back like this shows my hands were steering the club into casting down and opening the face. The technique of lagging the club via the movement of the body is something i'm going to practice next, and I might invest in one of those 'Hanger' things. Thanks Chris!
What exactly is. the left wrist doing at the end of the backswing to get the hands/wrists in the proper alignment in the downswing to avoid hitting the ball way right?
Another good vid - tx CR. Lag and shaft lean are the most difficult thing for us amateurs to do on a consistent basis. i used to use a training club called the Striker - I dare say you have heard of it but I learned you can make your own by grinding the sole of an old 7 or 8 iron - it takes patience but it does the trick. I also learned the "hangar" trick with a coat hangar and was wondering if you might do (or have already done...?) a vid on homemade training aids - swing weights, impact bags and so on - ??
when you do that drill, if you look carefully ,you can see that the thing that powers this little swing is the movement of the weight to the right early in the little backswing and the weight back to the left provides the force to change the direction the swing toward the target. When you do it wrong. ( cast from the top) we see that the weight ( pressure) does not move toward the target on the mini downswing. The power ( force ) is coming from the legs, hips, core.
My biggest issue is knowing the timing when to left the lag go or let the club head come around. When I golf lag I get inconsistent strikes. Any advise? Should I let lag go at last parallel or when left arm by pass left leg?
Hello Chris! Thanks for the video. It would really be a motivation for me if I can get some of your old/used kits. They are pretty expensive to purchase here in Nigeria. I would so much appreciate a kind gesture if it's not too much to ask.
Hey David, yes the lower body certainly plays a role as it initiates the forward movement which helps to sequence everything correctly. Generally speaking it’s hard for things to work well if the parts below don’t move quite right 👍
@@ChrisRyanGolf Golf is hard lol, I'm definitely going to start over from square one with my swing with this drill and work from there. Thanks Chris.! Keep the vid coming
Chris thanks for the reply. I am a lefty so the club face looked familiar. I bought the Hanger about six months ago after watching one of your videos. Best training device that I have used over the last 20 years!! Keep up the exceptional instructions.
Great video Chris, in reference to the first drill. Are you happy in a full swing for the handle to come back before the club head in the initial takeaway? I hope that makes sense. I feel this will stop me rolling the club inside straight away too
I've been trying to stop casting for years and can't seem to do it. I can attest your last point that doing this with an open clubface will lead to 45 degree right/shanks. It seems this also needs to be paired with getting the left hip out of the way on the downswing, no? If the hips don't clear = more shanks.
Best lesson from this video that should be in all golf instruction videos; fixing only one problem will make you worse. Glad you mentioned that we need to be aware of face position as well as swing path.
It all starts with proper grip. The trailing hand is especially vital to get correct. One must grip the club in the 2nd pads of the trailing hand, not the first as i’ve been doing for the past 22 years and just figured out I was ruining myself all these years because if that small move but huge impact on swing quality. By using the fingers/2nd pad it allows for all the good thing to follow, lag, using the body not the arms and hands, squaring the club, creating massive power etc etc. If you fuck yourself in your grip you’ll never have a great swing period. Human nature wants to use the 1st pads against the palm of the trailing hand as it feels powerful, but it’s absolutely a swing killer. Try 2nd pads and a full bucket like I did last week finally after 22 years of questions with no answers. Hit the best shots of my life from wedge to driver, by far and it felt so easy. Try it!!!
Hmm the lose wrist and lose grip might be the difference for me I after hitting on the range my hands and wrist hurt cause I am gripping the club so hard
Great vid Chris. A question I’ve always had in this regard is, does this give us license to ‘let go’ of the club slightly at transition to allow this to happen? I.e. keep control in the fingers but maybe allow the grip to drift away from the heel of the hand slightly. I’ve often heard it referred to as ‘ re-gripping’ and being a big no-no.
Hey Tim, great question and it’s a fine line. I don’t like to see the hand peel away from the club, but I do like the golfer to feel a little like they are reducing tension through the wrist area to allow this move to happen
@@ChrisRyanGolf Thanks Chris, I find that the strength of the grip in the fingers is difficult to separate from the level of tension in the wrist though. I get your drift though, just a case of getting the balance right I guess.
Never in 50 years of playing golf have I seen anyone on the course, other than instructors, with an alignment stick or any other kind of practice gadget. We practice by playing (after watching numerous videos lol) and then hope to put that practice in to play on Saturdays. Don't get me wrong, the instruction provided here is of course faultless but can we get a drill to use without the props please? Cheers.
Hey Phil, I of course appreciate your response, it if all you do is play then the reality is that you may never improve. These videos are for those looking to improve, and for that there needs to be practice. There are some quick fix options which may apply, but they often have short term effects and don’t work over the long ru n. I definitely do try to offer tips which require less time/effort/practice, but all changes need some practice time
@@ChrisRyanGolf I take your point. "Practice makes perfect", right? My point is that most of us just don't have the time or inclination to become perfect or anywhere close to it. We watch videos such as yours, we watch the pro tournaments on TV or travel to a course to see them live if we're lucky enough. We then try to emulate what we've seen. We also have lessons which hopefully does help us to lower our handicaps. And I understand you need to sell stuff to make your living. Fair enough. With the help of tips such as yours and other instructors here on YT I have won or placed 2nd in my last four consecutive tournaments. However, my game is improving (at 60 years of age) I'm playing better than I ever have (no props or gadgets) and most importantly (for me) I am enjoying it! Cheers from NZ.
Hey Chris, there are two schools of thought on ball placement. One is based on the opinions of Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus of always placing the ball at the inside lead heel no matter what club you use. The other is based on modern day golfers and vary based on the club. I believe both are correct myself and just wondered your thoughts on it. I see you vary yours, but wondered if you thought it really matters to you if a golfer does one or the other.
Hi Chris. Fantastic video. I'm in England. Watch all your videos. I'm hooked lol. I've been slicing the ball again. I've realised the back of my lead hand was slightly open causing my driver club face to do same. Took me a while to figure this out. Now your video has confirmed it. Thankyou. Peter
I think they are really hard to get hold of now, there were only a limited number and I know people were struggle to find them when they first released them
