Just stopped using Mach 4 as I loved running in them. But my knees hated them. A shame. But also a blessing as this guy says it doesn't feel like a true hoka to me, especially in the mid foot. As usual the same thing came to the rescue.... Clifton 8s!!...Cant recommend them enough from tempo to forgiving less paced runs. Softer in the middle then the 7s and wider in the toe box. @@goutfromfriedokra7099 I would go with the Clifton, it has enough cushion for walking but is lightweight enough that it would be good for sprinting intervals.
@@goutfromfriedokra7099 Typically you want more cushion when walking compared to running the same distance because you are on your feet longer when walking. Likely the Clifton would be better for your purposes than the Edge. The protruding heel of the Edge is designed for intense heel striking while running, but sprinting should keep you on your toes.
Bought a pair of Hoka Rincons after I tried walking NYC for 3 days straight in a pair of Adidas high tops that ended up killing my feet. Now that I have shoes that are actually comfortable I’m considering getting back into running. Been a long time since I’ve been able to put up 8-10 miles a day. I am not a professional marathon runner but a beginner who has ran 2 marathon till date of 5 kms. next one want to go for 10 km road marathon . kindly advice for marathon and running fast on treadmill at times.
I use the Speedgoat 5 on trail runs which are always over 10-20 miles (training for a 50K) and really like them so far. I also do some road training for distances below 10 miles out of necessity. Between the Mach 4 and Clifton 8, which are most comparable to the Speedgoat in terms of type of cushion, design, and "feel" if I was looking for my "road version".
I would say the Mach since the Challenger ATR is the trail version of the Clifton. The Mach is also more responsive than the Clifton, so it is closer to the Speedgoat responsiveness

Really enjoying the videos!! Had a question on Hoka. Thinking about getting the cliftons. My foot is a little wider. So I usually go a half a size up in other brands. I'm an 11 in the Adidas ultra boost. What size would you recommend in the cliftons?? Some people say go down a half a size and get wide??
Great review. Wondering your thoughts as to using Rincon 3 on a treadmill. Sounds like the toe off would help with practicing going faster inside on tread. Any concerns as to going to 10 or 12 percent incline with it or as to compaction with firmness of a treadmill run? Thanks.
These will be absolutely fine on the treadmill! Just make sure to monitor the mileage on the shoes because while treadmill running the outsoles do not wear out as much and it is hard to tell when the shoes are worn out.
Hi. Thanks for your amazing reviews. They’ve already helped me pick a great road running shoe. Now I’m training for a 45k trail (soft terrain + dirt / gravel roads) but a lot of my training is on road. I’m interested in trying Hoka. Could you review a model that is good for both road and trail? On road I run in Brooks adrenaline (pronator and - sadly - heel striker) ☺️ Thank you!
Hello, excellent video, but I still would like to have help and need to choose a pair of shoes to run a marathon in September. Clifton or Mach? and also, the width, how to decide?
The Mach is the lighter, faster option, but if you need some extra cushion I would go with the Clifton. For width, if you are typically a wide, you should stick with that in Hokas.
I have flat feet but since Ive already got my custom orthotics, I've been looking for a neutral shoe to insert the orthotics (since stability shoe + custom orthotics would be too much and overcorrect my feet). I know that super cushiony/plushy shoes (e.g. bondi) aren't good for flat feet so I was trying to get a shoe with a somewhat stiff/firm midsole and heel cup + wide footprint would also be beneficial. I was wondering if the upper material also affect the stability of the shoes? I've looked through the HOKA website and it seemed like Gaviota and Arahi have firmer upper vs. Mach and Clifton (
Can you suggest which Hoka will work best for group gym classes from weight lifting to cross train classes? I tried my Arahis today in a Boot Camp. They were not comfortable for that especially during lateral jumps. I have sesmoiditis on my right foot, so I really need to protect it. I tried my Asics 2160 in a cross train class last week. They did not protect my bad toe during box jumps.
We wouldn't recommend Hoka's for cross-training. If we did, our recommendation would be the Mach 5. Even though it is considered neutral, the lower stack height helps more with lateral jumping than the stability of the Arahi. If you aren't brand loyal to Hoka / Asics, we recommend trying out the Brooks Launch GTS 10 or the Altra Provision 8. They are both stability shoes like the Arahi. However, they have a shorter stack height, making them feel more balanced.
I still have some old Cavu and Cavu 2 shoes, that due to how much I rotate my shoes are still useable. But having seen what you recommend these 3 for, when would I use the Cavus? Also, any chance of you doing a similar comparison of Hoka’s trail shoes? I have Speedgoat, Challenger ATR 5 and Mafate Speed 2, but struggling to then work out what I would need next as I replace these out?
5ft 11 165 64 yrs old training for Ironman race Nov 2022 . What Hoka shoes will help me the best on not taking a beating to my legs ? Want to run 9:30 pace. I have used in training , Clifton's 4,5,6,7 cushy , Rincon super light , Mach 4 feels just right , Bondi > to heavy . In slow and steady build phase of 3 miles daily > rotate Rincon & Mach feels good for now on shorter runs. But longer runs ? Thanks good review information , keep up good work
The Clifton is going to be the most durable option and the best for longer distances. The Rincon and Mach are going to be best for shorter and faster runs.
If you are looking for something lighter and faster, then I would recommend giving the Rincon a try. If you want something with a bit more durability, grip, and arch support then I would recommend the Clifton.
I love the Mach 4’s, but after 250 miles the foam has lost most of its pop and has worn pretty badly. I’m going to have to get a replacement pair because of the resulting knee pain. Great shoe, just lower your expectation on the number of miles you can get from them.
The Mach is more of a light trainer/long road race shoe. If you are looking for a similar feel with a little more durability, the Clifton might be something good to look into.
the mach 4’s were great. i’m at 450 miles and am about to replace. i forget if it felt poppier before or not, but they certainly held up. i use them for easy runs and fast long runs. they range well from 9:00 to 6:00 pace.
Hi, I'm a brisk walker and went from a NB 1080v11 to the clifton7 because I can go faster and farther with better feel on asphalt and concrete. Is the Rincon 3 a softer impact say between the two??
Hey Run Moore I’ve got a pair of M4’s and am loving the nimble, responsive, dual foam of them. I’m 150 miles and experiencing some pretty bad uneven wear on the forefoot and other areas in the outsole Would it be wise to buy the Clifton’s to switch between for the durability? Or a back up of Mach 4’s?
Both the Hoka Clifton and Hoka Kawana have more outsole durability than the Mach 4, the Kawana being the slightly higher cushion version of the Mach. Either of these or another pair of Machs to rotate would increase durability. Also keep in mind that if your forefoot wear is particularly uneven, or concentrated towards the inside of your forefoot, it may mean you need more stability in your shoe.
The Arahi would likely be a good option for you, it has some stability that can help with ankle movement and is a very soft shoe that is easy on the joints.
I’m struggling to find the right Hoka for me. I’ve tried on the Rincon 3, Clifton 8, and Mach 4. Interestingly I found the Clifton to be tight in the mid-foot and had to go with the 2E width and size down to 9.5 on Clifton whereas size 10 on Rincon and Mach. I REALLY want to love one of these shoes but wasn’t totally feeling it the other day. I’ve never needed to buy a wide shoe before so found it interesting that the Cliftons seem to run narrow? I think overall I found the Rincon to be the most comfortable. Thanks for the great content.
We have found that the Clifton 8 tends to run large, whereas the Mach and Rincon tend to run more narrow. Hopefully you are able to find a shoe that fits well for you!
Either the Clifton or Rincon would be your best bet. If you need a little more cushion to get used to the impact of running, I would go for the Clifton
Hey! I just got home the Mach 4, however I feel that the shoe is a little to tight on one foot. So i wonder, does the shoe stretch after a couple of runs or do i make a wise decision to pick another shoe instead?
Mach 4 is a great shoe, but I want to try something new. Can I use Rincon 3 for long runs? Around 20-30 kilometers, pace around 5:00min/km with progression to 3:45min/km. Thanks! Or better option Mach 4?
Hi thanks for the great review. I have been running exclusively in Altra models for a while now. If I were to try the Clifton 8, would I find the normal toe box OK or do you think I should go for the wide version? Thanks!
Do these run narrow around the mid foot - I bought a pair of Clifton 7 and almost felt like there was a bump under my instep? I took them back after one run .. I did find they were very nice and springy though. At the moment I am using GEL Nimbus 23 2E because they accomodate my width
Hi. I've had previous Clifton's and had a bit of a problem with it pushing into the arch of my foot. I have read that other people say the same. Is it still the case with the latest model?
I've got two paid of Clifton 8s and a Mach 4. Clifton digs into my arch on both pairs. Mach 4 doesn't have this problem at all. I'm going to try a size down in the Cliftons and see if it makes a difference, but feel like anything more than a 10k and the Cliftons will sit that run out.
Thanks for watching! There have been minor changes made to the arch in the Clifton 8 arch, but if you have had issues with past models it is possible that you will experience the same discomfort in the new model. People with lower arches may find the new model more comfortable with the slight changes that have been made, though it may continue to push into your arch the same way the older models did since the change was subtle.
im a while late to this video but which of the 3 would be the best for me im a new runner i can run maybe 12/13 miles in a week looking to build up. ive been looking at the cliftons but now im split between the clifton and rincon
The Clifton would likely be the best choice. When starting out, it's important to have a good amount of cushion to ease into it and prevent shin splints.
Both options would most likely work. The Clifton 8 is going to be the more durable option, while the Rincon is going to be more lightweight. So it comes down to the type of shoe you prefer to jump rope in.
I weigh 190 pounds. Would you recommend Clifton or Mach for my weight? Running 100 miles in December for a group challenge. Also struggle with plantar fasciitis over the years.
I would recommend the Clifton just for the extra durability. They are typically good for 400-600 miles and are great for those with plantar fasciitis. Good luck with your challenge!
I'm curious how the Cliftons are described as the shoes with the most forgiving width? Is it only because they come in wide? The standard width Cliftons are easily the narrowest of this group of shoes.
Are the rincons something you can wall around all day in? Training for shorter distances and have a mind for speed but would also like something that I can walk around with. Or is the Clifton better for that?
If you need a stabilizing shoe, you should either go with the Arahi or the Gaviota. These both are Hoka stability models, with the Gaviota being the slightly more cushioned of the 2 options.
All three of these shoes are lighter and faster than the Bondi. While all Hoka shoes have a substantial amount of cushion, none of these compare to the massive stack height and amount of cushion that the Bondi 7 does.
@@RunMoore I am not a runner but am on my feet anywhere from 8-12 hours everyday. So some nurse & dr friends suggested these. I got a pair of the Bondi 7’s. They worked amazingly well, & lasted a year. Which is a long time for me. I am needing a new pair as these are coming apart @ mid foot. Both inside & out. So disappointing. But was looking into getting another pair of the bondi. Would you recommend the bondi7, 8, or X? Do you know the difference?
Having wide feet and a big instep makes for a sucky shoe shopping experience. I want to buy a pair of HOKA, but none of the cute colors I like come in the wide option. *sigh*
I work at amazon. A lot of other associates wear hoka but they're all different looks all but slightly off from each other. I feel like I have messed my feet up now due to how much I walk, with the wrong shoe. I currently have 2 pairs of insoles in my shoes and they actually feel great... for 4 hours or so. The next 6 hours my feet want to fall off. Knees hurting do not help but I just need help. If someone who is knowledgeable about hoka shoes(or the creator), would there be any specific one I should check out? There is a place near me that sells them so I am going to try a few different ones out, later this week. I have a light but heavy step(if that makes sense). When I walk I am quiet but with every step it is heavy. Any insight would help.... not a runner. 5'10 210-220lbs for prospective of my body and height. Thanks!
I would recommend looking into the Hoka Gaviota. It is their max cushion max stability model and has worked really well for our customers who have long, standing shifts.
Thanks for this review and excellent coverage on each shoe. I own all three and the Mach 4 is degrading the fastest. At 80 miles I'm thinking it may only last another 80. You mention the Mach 4 will be good to ~400 miles, is it your experience that the Mach 4 is as durable as the Clifton 8? Bang for the buck$, my rank order is: Rincon 3, Clifton 8...and Mach 4.
The Clifton is marginally more flexible than either the Rincon or Mach, which are the same flexibility. All three of these shoes are soft but not super flexible anywhere other than the very top of the toe box.
I've heard Hoka shoes where pretty good, so I ordered a pair from one of the "Internet" Stores! They Never showed up! Fortunately Pay Pal refunded My Money! If the Price Sounds to good to be True, it Probably is! Be careful who You by from!

the mach 4’s were great. i’m at 450 miles and am about to replace. i forget if it felt poppier before or not, but they certainly held up. i use them for easy runs and fast long runs. they range well from 9:00 to 6:00 pace.
Hi, I'm a brisk walker and went from a NB 1080v11 to the clifton7 because I can go faster and farther with better feel on asphalt and concrete. Is the Rincon 3 a softer impact say between the two??
The Rincon is a light cushion model from Hoka. So in comparison to the Clifton and the 1080, it is not going to have the same amount of cushion.
Hey Run Moore
I’ve got a pair of M4’s and am loving the nimble, responsive, dual foam of them.
I love the Rincons and for trail I love love Torrent2
Can you recommend hokas for someone struggling with ankle pain? Doing half marathon training
Hopefully you are able to find a shoe that fits well for you!
hoka is one of my favorite runners
They are awesome!
Which of 3 would you recommend for a beginner runners who runs 2-3 times a week, 5-6 k max? Great channel by the way!
Either the Clifton or Rincon would be your best bet. If you need a little more cushion to get used to the impact of running, I would go for the Clifton
@@RunMoore thank you!
Hey! I just got home the Mach 4, however I feel that the shoe is a little to tight on one foot. So i wonder, does the shoe stretch after a couple of runs or do i make a wise decision to pick another shoe instead?
They will not stretch substantially, the best thing to do is to size up. when fitting shoes, you always fit to the larger foot.
Mach 4 is a great shoe, but I want to try something new. Can I use Rincon 3 for long runs? Around 20-30 kilometers, pace around 5:00min/km with progression to 3:45min/km. Thanks! Or better option Mach 4?
Either would be a perfectly good option for that kind of workout, it totally depends on your preference!
Hi thanks for the great review.
I have been running exclusively in Altra models for a while now. If I were to try the Clifton 8, would I find the normal toe box OK or do you think I should go for the wide version?
Thanks!
If you have gotten used to the luxuriously wide Altra toe boxes, I would recommend the wide version.
@@RunMoore Thank you!
@@RunMoore Thanks!
Do these run narrow around the mid foot - I bought a pair of Clifton 7 and almost felt like there was a bump under my instep? I took them back after one run .. I did find they were very nice and springy though. At the moment I am using GEL Nimbus 23 2E because they accomodate my width
Thanks for watching. We have found that the Cliftons 8 run large and that they have high arches.
Hi. I've had previous Clifton's and had a bit of a problem with it pushing into the arch of my foot. I have read that other people say the same. Is it still the case with the latest model?
That was my experience as well but I do have flat feet. The cliftons gave me a really nasty blister. I can run in the rincon though.
@@RunMoore You forgot to include Bondi
This video might help you decide: ua-cam.com/video/VJhOA2mjpeQ/v-deo.html
Which do you recommend for jumping rope? Rincon3 or Clifton8?Thanks
Both options would most likely work. The Clifton 8 is going to be the more durable option, while the Rincon is going to be more lightweight. So it comes down to the type of shoe you prefer to jump rope in.
@@RunMoore Thank you so much. such a great help for me to decide..Stay safe and God bless😊
Rincon3 or clifton 8 which is more cushion?
The Clifton 8 👍
I weigh 190 pounds. Would you recommend Clifton or Mach for my weight? Running 100 miles in December for a group challenge. Also struggle with plantar fasciitis over the years.
I would recommend the Clifton just for the extra durability. They are typically good for 400-600 miles and are great for those with plantar fasciitis. Good luck with your challenge!
I'm curious how the Cliftons are described as the shoes with the most forgiving width? Is it only because they come in wide? The standard width Cliftons are easily the narrowest of this group of shoes.
They do come in wide, but they are the most forgiving in the stretch of the fabric.
Are the rincons something you can wall around all day in? Training for shorter distances and have a mind for speed but would also like something that I can walk around with. Or is the Clifton better for that?
The Clifton would be a better walk-around shoe because it has a bit more durable outsole.
@@RunMoore Thanks for the response. I bought a pair off your website
I had mach 4 and it made it to 550 miles absolutely love the shoe
We are glad you like it! Thanks for watching
What’s the most cushioned shoe out of the 3 ?
The clifton would be the most cushioned as it is a mid cushion shoe, while the Rincon and the Mach are light cushion shoes!
When considering a middle-aged woman in need of losing 40 lbs , which is the best walking shoe offered by HOKA? P.S. I need a stabilizing shoe.
If you need a stabilizing shoe, you should either go with the Arahi or the Gaviota. These both are Hoka stability models, with the Gaviota being the slightly more cushioned of the 2 options.
How do these compare to bondi 7?
*sigh*
We are sorry to hear that! If you need wide shoes, you might want to look into the brand Altra, all of their shoes are wide cut!
thankyou, so helpful!
Thanks for the support!
I was thinking Clifton 8..?
@@RunMoore update. i bought brandi 7??? so far so good, first 2 days were a bit rough but since then, perfect shoe and cushion
Great summary
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for watching! The Mach 4 is going to be less durable than the Clifton 8, though it should be able to last between 300-500 miles.
Great reveiw
Thank you! :)
Thank you for this video! Made my decision much simpler! Rincon 3 it is :)
Thanks for watching!
Can you qoute something on its flexibility..
The Clifton is marginally more flexible than either the Rincon or Mach, which are the same flexibility. All three of these shoes are soft but not super flexible anywhere other than the very top of the toe box.
@@RunMoore thanks bro'
Thanks!
👍👍👍
Mach 4>Clifton 8>Rincon 3
Thanks for watching!

I've heard Hoka shoes where pretty good, so I ordered a pair from one of the "Internet" Stores! They Never showed up! Fortunately Pay Pal refunded My Money! If the Price Sounds to good to be True, it Probably is! Be careful who You by from!

The Mach 4 sucks. That is all.
