Incidentally, I do love the music video for Weapon of Choice. Christopher Walken put on a fantastic performance, as he usually does.
It's oddly comical and yet totally badass. Like, he is quite literally ARMED TO THE TEETH, and he used every single one of those weapons to save the day.
Only time i've seen a shot like that is from POed, and that was about a spaceship's chef waking up to find his crew killed by some incredibly delicious monsters.
Reminds me of metro 2033, most weapons are low capacity and slow to reload, assault rifle ammo is weak against monsters then you you get to the communist station and pick the 12ga machine gun... And monsters become a trivial threat....
The game does a great job at turning the tables on the monsters. At first you were afraid... well... you were supposed to be afraid of them. And after some help from ol' grandpa the monsters are now afraid of YOU.
There's kind of a spiritual successor (roguelite survival horror), but in the form of a Lovecraftian Roadtrip instead of a classic horror film rescue mission like this. It's called "The Consuming Shadow."
I'd rather we see games like Wrath of Malachi get a second chance rather than a remake of already great games. Sure we have stuff like REmake and REmake 2 and 3, but then we get sloppy shit. Honestly a means to modernize classic games is preferable. And by that I mean just take the game and make it run better on current hardware, not whatever 'woke bullshit' you guys are thinking.

See, flintlocks weren't as reliable as modern firearms and took a long time to reload, so having a whole bunch of them was practical, in case one failed to fire or was just used. This game is surprisingly fun to run through jank and all, especially since it's dirt cheap. In fact, that’s probably why so many find it fun. Hard to complain about a game that costs as much as a large soda.
It's definitely a style of FPS that even though not done perfectly, I'd love to see more games try (a kind of hybrid resource management, adventure styled affair).

I got this game for free once as a addition to a gaming magazine I bought, then tried it during halloween with my mates and had a blast. It's conncept is quite unique and although janky it's still very much fun.
I knew Nosferatu before Drake and was genuinely confused about the quality of both games. I personally liked Nosferatu and its janky feel....as for Drake, I only heard dreadful things...

Back when we were kids finding new games was a real rarity. So when my brother and I found this game on one of those 4 in 1 pirated game discs, and it was not one of the games on the cover, we were obsessed with it. We played this so much, we essentially speedran this janky mess of a game. And as luck would have it, that same brother is visiting today! Thank you for finding this for us , Civvie.
Not that we don't have enough fast paced FPS games centred around hunting monsters and/or vampires, but someone should make a new version of this game but make it more intense, more visceral, more bloody and not jank. Someone get 3D Realms on the phone to make that happen.
I *JUST* played this today after watching someone play this game, i really enjoyed everything mind the banter being said over and over again, the idea of saving someone gave you some form of reward, while also losing someone ment the final boss gets harder, makes a sort of speedrun in it's own way. save everyone, let everyone die, etc. this game is very interesting for what it is.
it'd definately be cool. have some characters be super easy to save, but it's randomized as to what or who needs to be saved by what thing just to keep the game fresh.

For me, Halo CE is fun up until The Library. Then after that anus punting it has the balls to say "you should play the whole game backwards but with added space zombies." And it kinda loses it's charm. I dont think it would've been better without those levels but you never hear anyone say anything good about 'em. I have a full playthrough on my channel, though it is heavily edited for comedy, but it still shows the mental decline that happens during the average CE playthrough.
This game is a guilty pleasure of mine. I'd say given the random nature of it, it does feel like a predecessor of rogue-lite games that are popular now.
I would give that 'predecessor' title to... well, an actual roguelike, like Castle of the Winds or... I don't know, Rogue maybe. Personally I'd give it to CotW, it was the first I can recall with 'save anywhere' rules instead of 'save to leave, delete on death' rules.

the thing I remember about this is that it's entirely possible to generate an impossible castle with the keys you need not being accessible such as being behind the doors you need them for.

They were already around, Vickers was an upgrade of late XIX century Maxim machine gun. Historically, Vickers officially entered British service in late 1912 (year the game happens), so unless grandpa had some really big friends in military, I doubt he would get his hand on one of these and casually keep in his trunk.

I played this for the first time as a young lad and have loved it ever since. Granted, I'm used to jankiness, but nevertheless this game seldom fails to make me tense, especially with the premise that if you take your jolly sweet time the family members will be killed. This game will forever have a special place in my heart.

What this game does well is the atmosphere. Sound design especially, from the audio cues as you encounter enemies to the sounds of claws ripping through flesh. The idea of having a randomized castle you need to explore and unlock further parts by finding different family members is also great. Jank as fk, but I love it for what it does right even if there's a lot it does wrong.
Hey, can we sit back for a moment and notice that, that MG should not be able to fire. I tried to figure out which MG this one and came to the conclusion that its supposed to be a MG 08/15 (even though the game takes place in 1912 and the MG 08/15 wasn't made until 1915), the other similar MGs to it never had a LMG model and, in the case of the Maxim and Vickers, were mostly feed ammo from the right side instead of the left like the MG 08/15, also the 08/15 had the smooth barrel cover thing while most of the other contenders had bumps or ridges, but the weapon is almost the same exact shape as the MG 08/15 its just missing the bipod and the fact that the barrel is above the receiver (which is the reason it shouldn't be able to fire)
Looks like the artists tried to model a generic ol timey machine gun without much gun knowledge. That, or grandpa made it in his workshop. We're talking a wealthy Englishman in the 1910's here, this sort of things was not out of the ordinary.
I just noticed the final line from civvie is technically a pun since a vicar is a member of the church and the Vickers was a ww1 machine gun. Both pronounced basically the same way
Based on the model it's actually a German MG08, which was a Maxim derivative (Vickers was a Maxim derivative gun too) used across the Central Powers during the WW1 era. You can tell because the MG08 has a smooth water jacket around the barrel and a big conical muzzle device as modeled in-game, while a Vickers had a ribbed jacket and no cone. Just saying.

This game is surprisingly fun to run through jank and all, especially since it's dirt cheap. In fact, that’s probably why so many find it fun. Hard to complain about a game that costs as much as a large soda.

It's definitely a style of FPS that even though not done perfectly, I'd love to see more games try (a kind of hybrid resource management, adventure styled affair).

If you spam click using a weapon you're not proficient with while having no stamina, yeah, you're gonna have a bad time with Morrowind's combat.

I got this game for free once as a addition to a gaming magazine I bought, then tried it during halloween with my mates and had a blast. It's conncept is quite unique and although janky it's still very much fun.

Back when we were kids finding new games was a real rarity. So when my brother and I found this game on one of those 4 in 1 pirated game discs, and it was not one of the games on the cover, we were obsessed with it. We played this so much, we essentially speedran this janky mess of a game.

Since this game is set in 1912 it would make perfect sense for the main character to whip out a 1911 and that keeps making me laugh for some reason.
I *JUST* played this today after watching someone play this game, i really enjoyed everything mind the banter being said over and over again, the idea of saving someone gave you some form of reward, while also losing someone ment the final boss gets harder, makes a sort of speedrun in it's own way. save everyone, let everyone die, etc. this game is very interesting for what it is.
Wish more games tried this type of gameplay.
it'd definately be cool. have some characters be super easy to save, but it's randomized as to what or who needs to be saved by what thing just to keep the game fresh.

For me, Halo CE is fun up until The Library. Then after that anus punting it has the balls to say "you should play the whole game backwards but with added space zombies." And it kinda loses it's charm. I dont think it would've been better without those levels but you never hear anyone say anything good about 'em.
I have a full playthrough on my channel, though it is heavily edited for comedy, but it still shows the mental decline that happens during the average CE playthrough.

I'd say given the random nature of it, it does feel like a predecessor of rogue-lite games that are popular now.
I would give that 'predecessor' title to... well, an actual roguelike, like Castle of the Winds or... I don't know, Rogue maybe. Personally I'd give it to CotW, it was the first I can recall with 'save anywhere' rules instead of 'save to leave, delete on death' rules.

the thing I remember about this is that it's entirely possible to generate an impossible castle with the keys you need not being accessible such as being behind the doors you need them for.
Using an Andrew Hulshult song when getting the machine gun was a nice touch, especially a Doom song.

You can start this game punching Vampires to death, and it's weirdly more effective.
They were already around, Vickers was an upgrade of late XIX century Maxim machine gun. Historically, Vickers officially entered British service in late 1912 (year the game happens), so unless grandpa had some really big friends in military, I doubt he would get his hand on one of these and casually keep in his trunk.

What this game does well is the atmosphere. Sound design especially, from the audio cues as you encounter enemies to the sounds of claws ripping through flesh. The idea of having a randomized castle you need to explore and unlock further parts by finding different family members is also great. Jank as fk, but I love it for what it does right even if there's a lot it does wrong.

Hey, can we sit back for a moment and notice that, that MG should not be able to fire. I tried to figure out which MG this one and came to the conclusion that its supposed to be a MG 08/15 (even though the game takes place in 1912 and the MG 08/15 wasn't made until 1915), the other similar MGs to it never had a LMG model and, in the case of the Maxim and Vickers, were mostly feed ammo from the right side instead of the left like the MG 08/15, also the 08/15 had the smooth barrel cover thing while most of the other contenders had bumps or ridges, but the weapon is almost the same exact shape as the MG 08/15 its just missing the bipod and the fact that the barrel is above the receiver (which is the reason it shouldn't be able to fire)

I just noticed the final line from civvie is technically a pun since a vicar is a member of the church and the Vickers was a ww1 machine gun. Both pronounced basically the same way
Ok so we need a vampire game with a protag that is a vicar wielding a vickers
Based on the model it's actually a German MG08, which was a Maxim derivative (Vickers was a Maxim derivative gun too) used across the Central Powers during the WW1 era. You can tell because the MG08 has a smooth water jacket around the barrel and a big conical muzzle device as modeled in-game, while a Vickers had a ribbed jacket and no cone. Just saying.
