I got to play this a couple months ago and our conductor asked horns 1 and 2 to double the woodwinds so it could really be heard. It was fun. I was playing second and first horn had played too much by then so it was all me!
I remember listening to that part and thinking that was the horn part of dreams, only to find that the horns don’t even have it. I was so unbelievably disappointed
Dvorak hadn’t quite got the hang of writing for the horn as a chromatic instrument; he was utilising the valves for rapid crook changes (which is what they were first used for but you know that!) and some of his players would have been on 2 valve horns. They were probably highly resistant to valve horn technique anyway… If I remember correctly (retired now and don’t need to touch the horn ever again! Whoop!) this part is in D in original notation, unlikely he’d have written top Cs and if it’s in F no way would he have chanced high As!!! He was definitely writing for chromatic horns come the 9th and the tone poems. Your realisation of this part is utterly awesome. I’d have enjoyed it very much from my regular (and favourite) seat on 4th.
Hey, Ive been watching your videos I think for 1 or 2 years now and I have a quick question that I would love to hear! Can you do Tchaikovsky 5 horn solo or Tchaikovsky 5 finale at letter AA and play like all brass part from that to the cut time like a brass choir? i would’ve done it myself since I have all of the main brass instruments but my horn broke recently so I would love to here if you could play it so I could here how it would sound especially from you!
How do you sound so goood!!!! Practice probably lol, but I wish I had your sound!!! Probably too much to ask for a high school horn player though. A kid can dream though…

Played that piece last summer. Such another great work from Dvořák. It was so much fun to play it

Have you heard Vissarion Shebalin’s Horn Concertino, Op. 14? It’s quickly becoming one of my favorite horn pieces. The ending goes kinda hard ngl

If you hit his channel and go back a ways he lays out just how incredibly hard he's worked to get where he is.
Then there's Symphonia Domestica, which is like some baroque high horn player got to the part before the copyists 😂
