  • It's the Remix, Episode 2: Monster
In 1995, R.E.M. released their album Monster, a grungy affair that was initially not as well recieved as their earlier work. In 2020 for the 25th anniversary of the album, producer Scott Litt went back and did a brand new mix for the album. How does it hold up?

I'm so glad you made this video because I was losing it watching the official video on REM's Vevo for "What's the Frequency?" and I was like "where's that amazing killswitch overdub? (which is what I assumed it was, I've since been smartened up). Something kind of messed up about remixes that do this sort of add/subtract manouever is that new fans who assume that the remasters are just like the original but with better "sound quality" will actualy miss out on the specialness of the original.

I agree. I love listening to remix projects because sometimes they really are pretty special (the 2019 remix of Abbey Road, which I will cover at some point in this series, being one), but the original mix needs to continue to be readily available too. Otherwise you're pulling a "George Lucas and the Original Star Wars Trilogy", and you never want to go full Lucas.
Fortunately from what I can tell, the original mix of Monster is still the more widely circulated version on streaming services. So that staccato overdub will be there for most of everyone who'll stumble on "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" online

I’ve frankly never cared for Monster. I love frequency, star 69, circus envy, and let me in are great, but i struggle to care strongly about much else, though king of comedy and strange currencies are pretty okay. overall, i just think they did the grungy sound + their originality much better on new adventures. great video btw!

      Thanks for watching!
I do agree with you on New Adventures - I would definitely say that is my favourite REM record. The fact that most of it was recorded at soundchecks and on live shows just gives it this special energy that's hard to capture elsewhere.
