Great video and solid points, although I'd put Inferno higher. BTW, I enjoyed hearing Oxygene in the background.
Totally fair! A lot of this is based on rewatchability in my mind, and much though I adore Inferno I have to be in the right mood for that one.
Glad someone noticed the Jarre! I've floated around the idea of writing about him for a while but I can't think of anything intelligent to say about his work
@@michaelinlofi One of the things you mentioned on another story was "sense of urgency". That's something Inferno manages to pull off despite its long run time. I had literally just watched it with my kids this past weekend and I really felt it. There are also some great bits with Liz.
That's one reason I have to be in the mood for it, that sense of urgency in Inferno can get kind of stressful (especially in the last two episodes, with how bleak 6 is). But that it's that stressful is a testament to its quality: 54 years later, and Camfield and Letts' directing is still as effective as it was then
One thing I like about 'The Time Monster' is Benton has his smart moments. He knows Military Etiquette better than the Master and so nearly captures him single-handedly because of it.
And one thing about the production of 'The Mutants'. Cotton and Stubbs were, originally, going to be played by the other actor. But Christopher Coll - who ended up playing Stubbs - suggested they swap characters as he knew that, as a Black actor,, Rick James would have less chances of work in the year so two more episodes paycheck would help him out.
A series that had something to say about colonialism and racism on both sides of the camera.
Benton has always been their secret weapon and I love him for that.
And I did not know that about The Mutants! That's actually a really amazing thing for an actor to do for another
The Monster of Peladon is heightened by The Curse of Peladon coz Curse makes the Ice Warriors good guys as a twist, and it makes them being baddies in Monster a twist, which is really fucking neat.
Planet of the Daleks is one of the very rare scary classic stories for me. Especially the night time stand against the creatures in the dark.
The Sea Devils has the greatest fight scene of all Doctor Who, which in fairness isn't hard.
The Time Warrior is naff... agreed.
I really would love to see a video of yours about The Mutants. I really wanna love it and I feel like you have the power to make that possible. As it stands it's maybe my least fav of all third Doc stories...

The Mutants is definitely one I want to write an In Defence Of... video on. While I do understand why many don't like it much I do also genuinely think it has a lot going for it
@@michaelinlofi it has a legendary cliffhanger for me... like, a planet is getting unthinkably bombed to death while on the space station an airlock opens killing 1 person and putting others in peril. Idk, maybe even more stuff is happening in it... can't remember, but I remember loving the way it throws SO MUCH into the cliffhanger, it's AMAZING.
I think something I would enjoy is if you did a deep dive into a serial you don’t only greatly enjoy, but one you respect deeply artistically. An analysis where you’re not only saying that you enjoyed the performances, all that the direction had atmosphere or whatnot, but you talk about how they build to a very particular effect.
To me, the Caves of Androzani stands out in the classic era because it feels like a serial that can stand a part from just being Saturday entertainment to being a truly immaculate tragedy. One whose critique of Capitalism doesn’t feel like a tacked on element but a notion which informs every aspect of the story.
Anyway, I really like your channel, it’s really nice seeing someone doing deep dives into classic serials. I hope you continue to make quality doctor who work.

I've definitely been pushing around the idea of doing in-depths of specific serials. It started with me beginning to write an admittedly reactionary piece called "The Web Planet is Good, You're All Just Mean" (which I may come back to one day) but I would love to dissect things like The Mind Robber, The Seeds of Doom, all of Douglas Adams' work and (coincidentally) Caves of Androzani. The writing is the main trouble, but I imagine I'll work that out eventually
The Third Doctor is my absolute favorite of the classic Doctors, I'm always happy to see some appreciation for him. The Three Doctors was my first episode of Classic Who and is still my favorite of the era, though Silurians, Curse of Peladon, and The Green Death are all high up there for me too.
I especially loved hearing your takes that I disagreed with, though, because hearing your reasoning was fascinating insight and I really appreciated how different viewpoints manifest and what reasonings were behind what you liked and didn't like. Even when I hate episodes like Terror of the Autons or the Time Monster, or love episodes like the Sea Devils, I found myself understanding and agreeing with or conceding to what you said every time, and that was awesome.
I'd love to hear you do more in-depth talks about episodes, or rankings of other eras from both Classic and Modern Who.
Honestly, the best thing I can hear in terms of writing is that my points are valid from the point of view of someone who disagrees with me. I often worry about whether my writing works in that respect so I will always be delighted to hear from people who don't agree with me.
I do have intentions for some in depth essays on Classic serials, but more ranking videos may be a way off. This was supposed to be a bit of silly fun between videos and before I knew it, it was nearly an hour long. Oops!

3s era is super interesting, I don't love the earthbound stuff so much but season 10 is a personal favourite
damn i loved day of the daleks when i watched it a while ago, does everyone else not dig it as much?
Most seem to like it more than I do at least, in fact I think the special edition earned it the status of a bona fide classic to most

I'd actually really struggle to do that, honestly. Every single actor to play the Doctor has brought something interesting to the role. Even the portrayals I don't like much have things to love about them.
The only thing I'm sure of in such a list is that Jodie Whittaker would run last, but that would come with the MASSIVE asterisk saying that I genuinely do not believe it's her fault and waaaay more a writing problem. When I watched her run recently every so often I'd see that spark that makes someone The Doctor in her performance, and just get sad that the writing held her back so much.
I think that Day of the Daleks lives or dies on whether a person finds the character of The Controller interesting/compelling. You didn't mention him, so I guess it's no wonder that you ranked it as low as you did (even though it was a fairly decent star rating).
I admit that some of it is nostalgia though on my end though.
The Controller is definitely the strongest aspect of the invaded world timeline, but I feel he could have done with a bit more development in all honesty. I did like the scenes involving his manipulation of Jo, he was proper sinister there for sure
Jean Michelle Jarre, eh? Been a while since I listened to him. That's a nice ranking. I don't agree with them all - where would the fun be if I did? - but the only one I really disagree with is The Three Doctors.
Totally fair. In all honesty, I may be biased towards the Three Doctors on account of it being my very first Pertwee serial when I was all of 7 years old
@@michaelinlofi I was about the same age and LOVED it. I think it's just a shame it's aimed at that age group... I was so disappointed when I saw it again years later. More people would agree with you though, I think.
The crew seems split on it. From the DVD commentary Katy Manning and Nick Courtney loved it, but director Lennie Mayne wasn't too happy, allegedly calling the gel guards unbroadcastable names (which I believe, he was an Aussie bloke like myself)
I've been trying to get into the Sea Devils, the last Pertwee story I've got, for more than a year now but it just doesn't work. The Climax is in Episode 2, for crying out loud.
Why do people don't get Day of the Daleks? 3 Daleks beats UNIT because they're advanced weaponry. If you think it should be more than that then you don't get what they are, tanks.
I also don't like the Time Warrior, but because the story is terrible on purpose; Holmes wanted the potential for changing the past but not have it involve any major events that could change the past or involve advanced unlimited weaponry that would change time on their own. So we get guns from a few hundred years ahead, guns that need an Industrial Revolution to be useful once the ammo runs out... The Doctor: "It will lead to time advanced Atomic Weapons!" No it won't. We also have SJS sneaking aboard the TARDIS by hiding from the Doctor, without thinking anything odd is going on; It's weird.
For Day of the Daleks it's a script to film translation problem. The Daleks refer to a big invasion force, then there's just three of them. Do three Daleks solo all of UNIT? Sure. One Dalek is fully capable of destroying a whole city before anyone can do anything about it. But in terms of direction it still falls a little flat.
And as for the Time Warrior I think the Doctor's conjecture works. One would assume had Irongron taken over England with his guns he'd have had people smarter than he build more guns and get that arms race going. It's a sort of "fuck it we ball" story convention, but it works in context I feel
