Unless you research The "Dan" ~ you'd never know how complex the songs are; musically or lyrically. My Old School, is a single from Steely Dan's 1973 album Countdown to Ecstasy. The lyrics tell the story of a May 1969 drug bust at Bard College, named "Annandale". The incident happened while both Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were students there, the song mentions how a female acquaintance had betrayed them to "Daddy Gee" (G. Gordon Liddy, then the local prosecutor.) According to a 2014 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article, 44 people were arrested, including Becker, whose long hair was cut off at the Poughkeepsie jail. The upshot in the song is that the singer vows he is "never going back" to the college until "California tumbles into the sea"
“Daddy G” went on to serve in the Nixon Administration. Liddy was eventually convicted of burglary, conspiracy, and illegal wiretapping in the Watergate scandal that eventually resulted in President Richard Nixon resigning!
I feel Steely Dan doesn't get the credit they deserve. Please check out Peg, Do It Again, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, The Fez, Any Major Dude Will Tell You, The Fez, FM, and Hey Nineteen. Donald Fagen has a superb solo record The Nightfly. I.G.Y. and New Frontier are worth a listen. Keep smiling!! ✨☺️✨
The song is nearly 5 1/2 minutes of pure ear candy. This is a masterclass in how to do Jazz/Rock Fusion. Absolutely masterful. Honestly one of the 5 greatest songs Steely Dan ever did, and it's one of my favorite songs of all-time. And I'm a Metalhead.
You guys should react to more Steely Dan… "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Peg", "Aja", "Deacon Blues", "Kid Charlemagne", Bodhisattva", "Time Out of Mind", "Any Major Dude Will Tell You", "Hey Nineteen", "Show Biz Kids", "Fire in the Hole" 🎸🤘
Steely Dan uses The Best musicians on the planet to play on their recordings. The Aja album had nearly 40 different players. Donald Fagen is a perfectionist and chose the best musicians, and their unique sound, for each song. Amazing Mr. Fagen
I remember reading that the wife of a session guitarist who played with Steely Dan (Rick Derringer, maybe?) talked about how he would come home from the studio with his fingers bleeding, because there were so many takes - Steely Dan were nothing if not perfectionists - but that he loved it. LOVED playing with them.
You've only heard songs from Steely Dan's first album. Wait until you hear more! They have the best engineering and recording, superb arrangements and incredible musicians on their records. Suggestions: FM (No Static) and Deacon Blues for saxophone, Black Cow for funky groove, Hey Nineteen for that bass. Kid Charlemagne has one of the best guitar solos ever, Babylon Sisters is stunning... I could go on and on. But FM next!!!
There's so much bad and heavy about the breadth of social media and platforms that we ca get caught up in. People like these two wonderful people are a reminder that there's also so much, so very much, that the internet has offered. The fact that these two can make some coin spreading such positivity and music is a nice slice of goodness from it all. Good work good people. I love your channel.
I love these two. As a 66 year old woman of course I love the music but these two are something else. I would be proud if either one was my child! Rock on Jay and Amber,
One of the best phrases ever - 'Got a case of dynamite I could hold out here all night Yes I crossed my old man back in Oregon Don't take me alive" Sure paints a picture 👍
Fun fact: Jeff Skunk Baxter, the guy you hear ripping on the guitar has one of the highest levels of clearance for the US Department Of Defense, his area of expertise... missle defense systems! If you see pictures of him back in the seventies you'd think ...no way that dudes a total stoner! Just do a UA-cam search on him and you'll see him talking about it! Anyways he also laid down some iconic solos for the Doobie Brothers as well.
Steely Dan had the most interesting, intelligent lyrics, along with the best musicians and production. When people bought their new stereo systems they would test them out by playing Steely Dan albums. They didn't have any bad songs! Check out "Don't Take Me Alive" and "Kid Charlemagne" for amazing guitar solo and storytelling, "Riki Don't Lose That Number," "Aja," too many to mention!! Love you guys!!
The entire Aja album. So hard to pick one. Peg, Do It Again, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, Black Cow.....a very deep and varied rabbit hole. Partly because they hired studio musicians, only two regular members! Really should hit them at least once a month.
Walter and Donald went to Bard College at Annandale-on-Hudson. They also played with Chevy Chase (on drums). This song tells about a big drug bust by G. Gordon Liddy. 44 people were arrested. He left Bard for the way they abandoned the non-students. I think I heard that they offered him an honorary degree years later. No idea if he accepted it.
J & Amber, you'll LOVE their "Aja", "Deacon Blues" and "Josie"!!!!! They are outstanding! edit- 3 songs in and you figured out they are music perfectionists!! Well done!!
"Peg" is a must with Michael McDonald singing background vocals while singing the famous "Peg" line that sounds like an instrument. "Kid Charlemagne" has the best guitar solos of all time played by Larry Carlton. Steely Dan cannot be compared to others because they are in a class all their own. IMHO
"Green Earings"(A very funky track), "The Caves of Altamira" and "Don't Take Me Alive" from "The Royal Scam" album are wonderful songs that are largely overlooked. Definitely worth a listen if you do a deeper dive.
Caves of Altamira - Who else can write a tune about 40,000 year old cave paintings - tie it to hollywood - and make a record of it. They heard the call so the wrote on the wall... and we understand.
Steely Dan's musicians are off the chart!! Just saw them two weeks ago - even though Walter Becker is gone, the touring band is still freaking amazing! Ya'll need to check out "Josie" or "Deacon Blues" : - )
"Showbiz Kids" a story about the rich and famous versus the working class poor. "King of the World" is a post-apocalypse tale that just grooves. Two GREAT tunes, give it a try!
One of my favorite bands. You'll love "Black Cow", "Peg", "Josie", "Bodhisattva", "AnY Major Dude", "Hey Nineteen", "Kid Charlemagne", "Haitian Divorce". So many great songs in their catalog.
This band is incredible and I'm stoked y'all have started your Dan journey! Let me say that y'all are such a positive and open-minded presence in the reacting space and set a great example for the attitude listeners oughta bring to new music: curious, thoughtful, enthusiastic.
Steely Dan A jazz band, hiding out as a pop band, is simply the best at what they do. The older I get the more I love not only their classic songs but their entire catalog. It's sophisticated and fun to boot.
It's probably a coincidence, but the three Steely Dan songs you've done were all off their first two albums. They had so many more bangers after that. "Rikki DOn't Lose That Number" should be your next one, followed "by Peg", "Deacon Blues", and "Hey Nineteen".
This was their complete deception of the rock world. Steely Dan is not a band. It's a Duo. It's Walter Becker, (guitars, backing vocals) and Donald Fagan(keyboards and lead vocals.) Everyone else on every album were hired musicians. Some for specific songs only. They were the first to do it, and of course, their very diverse sound is the result. They hired ALL the top studio, jazz and rock musicians of the day. Many didn't even know if what they did with them would be included on their album until it was released. Amazing band. Didn't like em much when I was kid and their music was new, but I'm 55 now and can REALLY appreciate to musical genius of Steely Dan. Great reaction.
Great reaction and really like that you appreciate “The Dan” so much! The problem with suggesting any of their songs, is that there are so many to choose from (and there isn’t a bad one)! I haven’t gone through the comments, but I’m satisfied that that most of their great ones have already been suggested, however, gotta hear “Rikki Don’t Lose that Number” as a huge hit and anything off Aja album all from the mid 70’s. Donald Fagan has a great album from early 80’s “The Night Fly”, with many great songs!
One of my favorite songs OF ALL TIME !!!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Steely Dan! And thank you, Rob Squad Reactions, for posting a video what will help spread the joy and happiness of Steely Dan.
Steely Dan is the band other great musicians listen to be amazed and entertained 'Aja' is the indisputable masterpiece, but truly anything from their hayday Side Note: Look for the live version of Bodhisattva with the famous onstage introduction
Props to you guys, putting in the effort to drop 3 videos a day for our entertainment, not to mention the memories and broadening my musical horizon. The variety is on point, commentary is well placed and quick to return. You guys are a great couple, Amber can drop ones blood pressure 10 points when she gets in her song "zone". Glad I found this channel and the RSR family.
The Eagles feud with Steely Dan is illustrated in Their song "Hotel California" with the line "They stab it with their Steely knives, but the just can't kill the beast" I love them both!!! I remember those times and their back and forth insults. Lol
As far as I’m concerned, I think you should do Steely Dan once a week. “Steely Dan Sunday”, or maybe each week pick a random “Dan Day”. The entire catalog is well worth your time to explore, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. A shot of The Dan each day is good for you. Especially if you follow it with a Beth Hart chaser. ♥️✌🏼😎
So glad you're starting into early Steely Dan as it will give the progression of this great band. I think when you jump in to the middle songs of a band you miss this progression. Aja Peg Rikki Don't Lose That Number Deacon Blues Glad you're enjoying them.So much more to discover. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Amber deservedly gets alot of love, but my favorite J quote is "your boy J don't cuss". You guys are the best, I'm so glad you guys are teachers. Deacon Blues, definitely.
Donald Fagan is a genius. Steely Dan is totally underrated. Absolutely the greatest band of all time. The loss of dear Walter Becker can't be underestimated. Steely Dan reminds me of the blessing of being in high school during the 1970s. Y'all it was the BEST! Never to be repeated - and I was immersed in the greatest bands of all time!! Love You Rob Squad. Keep 'em coming!
Aja, Black Cow, Josie, Peg, Deacon Blues, Hey Nineteen, FM, and so many more. They are just one of the most awesomest bands and I have always loved them so! ❤️❤️❤️
There are no bad Steely Dan songs…a couple of my favs include: The Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic, Peg, Green Earrings, Deacon Blues, Josie, Black Friday, Haitian Divorce and Glamour Profession. these songs will give you a great idea of the depth, breadth and diversity of The Dan
I suggest Steely Dan’s song “Aja” because it’s so different and such a groovy vide. Also Walter Becker was one of the most talented and least discussed guitarist ever. Love your channel and thank you for bringing the good vibes 😎
Interesting you said you guys are really into piano in rock songs. I'm VERY surprised no one has requested that you react to "Rockin' Pneumonia - Boogie Woogie Flu" by Johnny Rivers. That is the 'ultimate' piano rock song!! Jay will be blown away!
Teacher Tony here. I Love your reactions. When it comes to Steely Dan, you've just scratched the surface. Wait until you hear Aja, Kid Charlemagne, and Bodhisattva.
Production Values! I can think of no one more driven for quality in their music than Becker and Fagan. Absolute fanatic of these guys since 1970. And still am. Every note, every word, every song every album (and the ONLY duo/group I have in cassette, vinyl, CD, DVD.)
Female Friday suggestions, all #1 songs in the 1980's: "Mickey" - Toni Basil - 1982 "Papa Don't Preach" - Madonna - 1986 "Straight Up" - Paula Abdul - 1988

They are such a great bad so many amazing albums. They are performing at Jones Beach next week. Planning on going; never saw them live before. If I do it's more concert T's for you. Another great reaction, and once again Thanks for the smiles.
What's amazing is you guys have only done 3 very early , albeit great, Steely Dan songs, and you haven't even touched the many albums that came later like Aja, Katy Lied, Royal Scam and Goucho. Every song on Aja is simply brilliant--from what is arguably the greatest pop album ever made and you haven't even heard one tune yet... so get busy you guys! 😊
Agreed.. Aja absolutely my favorite.. but touch on First album a little more .. you could do a whole reaction channel on Steely Dan and I would subscribe to it.. “ Dirty Work “ is more about the crushing lyrics than the music.
Steely Dan is definitely on top, in terms of compositions and musicianship. Josie and Hey Nineteen. Maybe do reactions to the vinyl versions. You've got to hear that hi-hat.😉
These people do not realize that Steely Dan did not tour for years even with hit albums. They always played (2 guys) with some of the best studio players, guitar, drums, bass, backing vocals , in the business..............they did not have to tour, their albums were so good. People in the music business would want to know the release of their next album........
You can never go wrong with Steely Dan! I see you've done this one, Do It Again, and Reelin' in the Years. Others you must do: Peg Deacon Blues Hey Nineteen Rikki Don't Lose That Number Black Cow Aja Josie Dirty Work And you should check out "New Frontier" by Donald Fagen (and produced by Walter Becker)
The thing we have here is... you guys doing this show your taste in music has changed in 7 months!!! your knowledge of music has grown right in front of you in a really short amount of time!!! fun to watch as well!! keep up the good work and thank you for good entertainment!
“FM(No Static At All)” and “Deacon Blues” are the next two songs from this band you should react to. “Life In The Fast Lane” from the Eagles is another song you should react to.
Steely Dan is really 2 guys, Donald (Keys) and Walter (Guitar). They used the best studio musicians from jazz and all other genres. At first they didn't tour. That changed later after the demand got so big. This is NYC music at it's finest!
I'm glad to see you're getting back to Steely Dan! So many great Steely Dan songs, but I'd start with these next: 🔥🎶😎 "Josie", "FM" (extended version: ua-cam.com/video/316mipUnA-M/v-deo.html), "Dirty Work", "Bodhisattva", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", "Monkey In Your Soul", "Hey Nineteen", "Peg", "Show Biz Kids". BTW, the amazing Michael McDonald was in Steely Dan's touring band, but he left to join The Doobie Brothers.
Check out Leon Russell live playing "Jumpin Jack Flash" with George Harrison, Clapton, Ringo Starr!!!. Dripping with pure soul - This is the kind of music you both LOVE!!! It's from the concert for Bangladesh - first major rock benefit in 1971. The entire video is on the other site with a "v" that posts videos. Leon at 55:30 minutes in
I have been listening to SD for about 50 years. This is music I will ALWAYS listen to. I still get excited when I hear it. These guys would record songs and then bring in a new group of musicians to record the same song to hear differences in players. These guys were perfectionists and knew what they wanted. Danny Dias, a member of the band, said that Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were very serious about their music. He said that their conversation was intelligent and cerebral and that you did not get fart jokes with these guys. As always, love your reaction. You both have great taste in music!!!
A good story-telling band you've not covered is The Lovin' Spoonful. Their songs Daydream and Did you Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind are good starting places.
A huge Steely fan here. You guys rock! Sometimes the goosebumps . This one made the hair on my arms stand up. You’ve just touched the surface of their talents.
Steely Dan were "The Beatles" of the 70's, 80's and 90's. They picked up where John, Paul, George and Ringo left off. You should do more of their stuff - all the suggestions in these comments are great!
Unless you research The "Dan" ~ you'd never know how complex the songs are; musically or lyrically.
My Old School, is a single from Steely Dan's 1973 album Countdown to Ecstasy.

I've heard this song a thousand times (and loved it every time!), but I didn't know that. Thanks for the explanation!
jessica lee thank you for the back story of My Old School! I know all Dan songs have their meaning, and it's always interesting to hear it told.
Thanks; I did not know that!!!😮
“Daddy G” went on to serve in the Nixon Administration. Liddy was eventually convicted of burglary, conspiracy, and illegal wiretapping in the Watergate scandal that eventually resulted in President Richard Nixon resigning!
Got it on vinyl and cd
I feel Steely Dan doesn't get the credit they deserve. Please check out Peg, Do It Again, Rikki Don't Lose That Number, The Fez, Any Major Dude Will Tell You, The Fez, FM, and Hey Nineteen. Donald Fagen has a superb solo record The Nightfly. I.G.Y. and New Frontier are worth a listen. Keep smiling!! ✨☺️✨
They get the credit they deserve from discerning people.
You forgot to mention "Black Cow" one of my favorites.
@@travisneal3389 Aja is a great album and Black Cow is another hit they should check out for sure!! 😉
They get the credit they deserve from those who know.
Don't forget Hey Nineteen.

LOVE Steely Dan. “Bodhisattva” swings AND rocks simultaneously. “Deacon Blues” is beautifully smooth.
yes, I love the guitar and piano dual in this one!!! Literally!!!
@@terryaustin5976 Bodhisattva has triple lead guitars. Amazing track
Yes a Quick Tempo Gem

Steely Dan uses The Best musicians on the planet to play on their recordings. The Aja album had nearly 40 different players. Donald Fagen is a perfectionist and chose the best musicians, and their unique sound, for each song. Amazing Mr. Fagen
Indeed! Skunk Baxter certainly laid down some very tasty licks on this album (Countdown to Ecstasy). "Boston Rag" is one of my favs.
Donald said on the Making of DVD for Aja that they went thru 6, 7 or 8 guitarists to get the right solo for "Peg".
Larry Carlton is very awesome as well.
Michael McDonald was once amongst their ranks before joining the Doobie Brothers
Steely Dan were master musicians, perfectionists in the studio, and wrote great songs. You can’t go wrong with them.
Their sound actually has soul! This song makes me want to get up and dance. The band is so tight!
Released 49 years ago. Still sounds modern today. Steely Dan was at least 50 years ahead of their time.
Saw them live a couple times over the years. So thrilling!! RIP Walter Becker.
Except that it is Jeff Baxter on the solos here.

You can't go wrong with Steely Dan. Ever.
There is a reason Steely Dan is called "your favorite bands' favorite band"
Skunk Baxter just owning that lead guitar.
Steely Dan … Tight, Classy and light years ahead of their Time ! Remind me How old is this now ?? 😆
Ahead of their time? What does that even mean? That they pointed the way to towering artists like Cardi B?
They are absolutely precision. Every single note of every single instrument perfectly in it's place to produce absolutely magnificent ear candy.

One of my faves from The Dan...such a high energy groove in this song. Keep the energy high with "Don't Take Me Alive."
One of the best phrases ever - 'Got a case of dynamite

Sure paints a picture 👍
My favorite Dan song, the baritone sax kills it. Love the lyrics, reminds me of leaving my old neighborhood behind long ago.

The short notes are called staccato. On guitar he playing double stops which give it that sound.
One of the best studio bands of all time. Incredible production!
this is the rabbit hole to end all rabbit holes. If you guys decide to start getting into Steely Dan you will be blown away every single time
There are no bad Steely Dan songs…a couple of my favs include: The Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic, Peg, Green Earrings, Deacon Blues, Josie, Black Friday, Haitian Divorce and Glamour Profession. these songs will give you a great idea of the depth, breadth and diversity of The Dan
A great bunch of picks!! Let me add “ Dirty Work “ and “ Midnight cruiser “
YES!!! 👍😃❣️
Teacher Tony here. I Love your reactions. When it comes to Steely Dan, you've just scratched the surface. Wait until you hear Aja, Kid Charlemagne, and Bodhisattva.
I love their whole catalog, I think you’d also like “Rikki Don’t Lose That Number” it’s one of my favorites just cause it’s so catchy
Production Values! I can think of no one more driven for quality in their music than Becker and Fagan. Absolute fanatic of these guys since 1970. And still am. Every note, every word, every song every album (and the ONLY duo/group I have in cassette, vinyl, CD, DVD.)
Extremely underrated band! They have sooooo many awesome songs!!!! ❤️
What do you mean underrated!! All musicians and true Danites know 😊
Black Cow is a must sampled by multiple hip hop artists
Female Friday suggestions, all #1 songs in the 1980's:
"Mickey" - Toni Basil - 1982
"Papa Don't Preach" - Madonna - 1986
"Straight Up" - Paula Abdul - 1988
Yeah, I am old. Another great reaction.
Saw them live at the Hollywood Bowl a few weeks back, they were truly amazing! Check out “Dirty Work” if you haven’t already!
Crushing lyrics on “ Dirty Work “
KISS - no make up/live
“I still love you”

Billy Vera (great Sax song)
Greatest broken heart song

They are such a great bad so many amazing albums. They are performing at Jones Beach next week. Planning on going; never saw them live before. If I do it's more concert T's for you. Another great reaction, and once again Thanks for the smiles.
@Timothy Burns can't wait
Walter Becker died some time ago. Steely Dan is no more….
I saw Steely Dan in concert back in the 90’s on their Citizen Steely Dan tour. Masters of their craft.
"Hey 19" "Haitian Divorce" "Peg" the list goes on ....great band 👍👍🇨🇮
Steely Dan is definitely on top, in terms of compositions and musicianship. Josie and Hey Nineteen. Maybe do reactions to the vinyl versions. You've got to hear that hi-hat.😉
Steely Dan's "Don't Take Me Alive". Great, rare, intro guitar solo.
If you only did two songs up until now, you’re missing a whole lot. Pretzel Logic, Aja, and Doctor Wu are three greats.
I was wondering if Dr Wu was going to be mentioned. Nice!!!
"I've been waiting on the taste you said you'd bring to me".
Love Dr. Wu!
The horns in the chorus are ALL TIME GREAT!
Others you must do:
Peg
Deacon Blues
Hey Nineteen
Rikki Don't Lose That Number
Black Cow
Aja
Josie
Dirty Work
And you should check out "New Frontier" by Donald Fagen (and produced by Walter Becker)
A really great list.. !! Especially “ Dirty Work “ for the crushing lyrics. One more “ Midnight Cruiser “
Great Eagles pick! And album cut of “ already gone “
Steely Dan is really 2 guys, Donald (Keys) and Walter (Guitar). They used the best studio musicians from jazz and all other genres. At first they didn't tour. That changed later after the demand got so big. This is NYC music at it's finest!
you need to do 10 more tracks from them.
10 more easy!
Or more!!!
My top 10 Favorite Groups. Steely Dan.. Chicago..Doobie Brothers...Three Dog Night.. Santana..Earth Wind and Fire.. Kool and Gang Foreigner
.
This was their first album. You have NO IDEA what you're in for. They kept getting better and better.
This was their second album. Can’t Buy A Thrill Was First. This is from Countdown To Ecstasy.
I cannot believe you have only been here for one year. You have grown in leaps and bounds in my eyes. Fantastic!!
The Royal Scam, Kid Charlemaine, Peg and Deacon Blues are a few more of their many great songs.
The royal scam, for sure.
Leon at 55:30 minutes in
Leon and the Shelter People Tulsa Time.
If they do the Lovin' Spoonful, I hope they get to "Summer in the City" and "You didn't have to be so nice".
Darling Be Home Soon.
A huge Steely fan here.
You guys rock!
Sometimes the goosebumps .
This one made the hair on my arms stand up.
You’ve just touched the surface of their talents.
Next Steely Dan: "Peg" "or "Bodhisattva"
Steely Dan were "The Beatles" of the 70's, 80's and 90's. They picked up where John, Paul, George and Ringo left off. You should do more of their stuff - all the suggestions in these comments are great!
