This voice is the late Terry Kath who is also the guitarist who played that incredible solo in 25 or 6 to 4. He was and is a legend.

Feelin' Stronger is too Peter Cetera. Not the original sound. Best to stick with very early Chicago Rock and Horns. Amazing sound. Terry Kath sounding sounding Chicago is best.

As a Hendrix historian, Kath did not play guitar like Hendrix, not even close or in the same ballpark; as a solo player, Hendrix couldn't hold a candle to Kath's soloing, and Hendrix knew it. But nothing Kath ever wrote as a song can compete with Axis, Cry of Love, Electric Lady, etc. Kath was in the elite group of soloists, and Hendrix all alone, entirely atop the mountain alone as an inventive songwriter.

Most definitely! There is a neat little thing kind of buried in the mix, but if one listens it is quite clear. What I'm talking about is that at about the 2:55 mark or so Terry Kath's rhythm riff changes just slightly but noticeably to the Rolling Stones "Jumpin' Jack Flash" rhythm guitar riff, then at just about exactly the 3:00 mark they sing "Jumpin' Jack Flash, it's a gas, gas, gas" - it's kinda quick but once you've heard it, it's almost impossible to miss it.
That's my favorite Chicago song! Such a happy rocking tune with positive vibes

When you said What is that, it's Terry Kath jamming on his guitar. He was truly unique. Jimi Hendrix loved his playing!
Yep - Jimi actually said 'that guy is better than me'...lol. Jimi was essentially a great blues player that came up with some great psychedelic ideas. It's not a competition though...

The trombonist, James Pankow, charted all the horns on all the songs. The other horns were Lee Loughnane (trumpet), and Walter Parazaider (sax). Pankow wrote stellar charts and deserves great credit for the success of the band.
Agreed 100% I played trombone in jazz band in high school and Pankow was an inspiration.

"Amber loves horns". The band was built around the horn section.
Chicago used three different lead singers. This singer is the guitarists Terry Kath. The singer with the middle tone of voice is the keyboardist Robert Lamm. The vocalist with the higher pitched voice is the bass player Peter Cetera. They didn't want to have Chicago be about one person, they wanted to focus be on the band as a whole.

One of the most beautiful songs you'll ever hear is "Color My World" with Terry Kath's soulful voice really shining again! !!!
Short, simple, yet oh so emotionally deep and full. One of my favorite love songs ever!
The guitar solo Kath starts at 5:58 is played by trills with the pick incredibly fast. Many musicians, like myself, attempted this solo.Very difficult but beautifully musical. His voice is a bluesman's dream. The entire band was cooking on dynamite.

They weren't alone in having a horn section. Blood Sweat & Tears, Lighthouse, Edgar Winter's White Trash, The Ides of March - all large ensemble acts.

I was 14 years old when this song was out on the radio, hanging out with my first boyfriend, I’m thinking 1970ish. I’m 66 yrs old now, can you imagine how cool it is for me to see you young people discovering all the music of my lifetime? You soooo get it! You’re a great couple!

Great thing about 70’s Chicago is they have 3 different vocalists with such different sound. Unique and made them a killer band.

I'm 62 years old and still get goosebumps over the Chicago / Terry Kath sung, "In The Country" from their 2nd album. Loaded with those famous horns and Terry's unmatchable voice!
I am still stuck on their 1st and 2nd albums. I now have to listen to "Introduction" and "In the Country."
The original band had three lead singers - Terry Kath (heard here), Peter Cetera (25 or 6 to 4) and Robert Lamm (Saturday in the Park). All three could have fronted any band, but Chicago was fortunate to have all three. And Terry Kath was a monster guitarist!

This is actually two different songs clipped together that are part of a suite entirely written by James Pankow, the trombone player. To fully appreciate it you have to listen to the suite, 'Ballet For A Girl From Buchanon'. 'Make Me Smile' is the first song, then it transitions into some other songs, then 'Color My World' (also sung by Terry Kath, in a much mellower voice), then another instrumental, then the end of what you hear here, which is 'Now I Need You'. Amazing performance and amazing songwriting by Pankow.
Thats Terry Kath playing the fast break on the guitar. Terry Kath was praised by even Hendrix as being one of the best.

Terry Kath was such a good guitar player and his life was cut unnecessarily short. I would say if you think of it, watch the live performance of this. It's incredible, too. On Chicago's first album, Terry did a solo called Free Form Guitar and it really is free form. There's no structure and it is incredible. Thank you both for being out there. Make Me Smile is from 1970.
Just listened to Free Form Guitar by chance the other day. Not an easy listen but the fact they put it on their first says a LOT about the times.
According to producer Jim Gurcio Terry Kath did Free Form Guitar in one take. No overdubs, Gurcio cut the lights and Terry let it rip and that's a wrap! He was that good!!!

Chicago is a Great American Band whose songs have been the soundtrack to countless millions of American lives for decades.
Terry Kath took this band to another level, his great voice, and amazing guitar skills just were unmatched..

Chicago are among the gods of Rock n' Roll along with Blood Sweat & Tears......this group really carried the traditions of Big BandJazz music mixed with Rock like BST who really started this kind of music in the 60's. Check out "You Make Me So Very Happy" by Blood Sweat & Tears, it is FIRE with a little Crooner sound to it!!!

I was into Chicago in the early 70's because my late father used to listen to the Daly Wilson Big Band.

I grew up with Chicago with I adored them being a trumpet player back then. Another band with HORNS HORNS HORNS is BLOOD SWEAT AND TEARS. Try "SPINNING WHEEL"

Terry Kath was an insanely talented guitar player. Other worldly kind of player. He died too young and was more interested in great music than just himself.

If I'm not mistaken, he was talking about the kids playing in the park. Watching them play with such joy and abandon was what was making him smile.
Chicago was amazing, jazz you up with the horns , and then Terry Kath blisters you with his guitar work. 3 different vocalist on top of it all.
The soul of Chicago. Terry Kath. Chicago had three main singers Terry, Peter Cetera and Robert Lamm. Each had unique voices but Terry was a skilled soul singer plus an ace guitarist. Peter kind of took over the group in a way with the more pop hits. And then tragically Terry shot himself by accident and died. The group imo never was the same without their leader Terry.

The actual Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) threatened to sue the band for trademark infringement, so they changed their name to Chicago.
This song is from the album Chicago II, and is actually part of a suite of 3 songs called "Ballad for a Girl in Buchannon", and includes Color My World and Make Me Smile. So if the middle part seems a bit awkward, it's because they chopped part of it to turn this into a single.

When I was in high school my marching band did a Chicago half time show. It was one of my favorite shows.

Then at Michigan State University, in Marching Band we did a Chicago show and did it in University of Illinois Football stadium in 1976, got our picture forming the Chicago script logo on the field in the Chicago newspaper. If you don’t have one get a turntable. Buy this in vinyl. Get in a dark, comfy room. Listen to all 4 sides start to finish. That is the experience.

You’re hearing the fab guitar playing. Back in the day, I loved Chicago. Fell in love the first time I heard them because of the horns. I have always said the ‘70s had the best music and I have never let go of that since then. Love listening to young people discovering the best of the best ‘70s music.

So Very Hard to Go is a monster song from Tower of Power. It was released 50 years ago and it's still on my playlist as are most of Chicago's songs from the late 60s and early 70s.
I've lived in Chicago my whole life. This band played on every single radio station in the city. My mom had all of their albums. They were the soundtrack of my childhood. It makes me smile to see you both enjoy this so much.
I group up in Chicago too. My parents also had their albums. We listened to them alot.
A few other great early Chicago songs are Beginnings, with Robert Lamm on lead vocals, and Questions 67 & 68, sung by Peter Cetera. Great stuff!

I was lucky enough to see them live in Australia in 1972. Terry Kath was amazing as were the rest of the band. It was such a tragedy when Terry died. I have a collection of their albums to which I still listen.

Terrific song, sung by Terry Kath, their legendary guitarist, who was also Jimi Hendrix's favorite guitarist. After this song, you MUST react to their version of "I'm a Man" which is a cover but one they improved upon, with more funk and better production. It will make you jump up and dance! Or, "Saturday in the Park" which sounds just like a Saturday in the park, it's so good.
Not to throw any shade whatsoever upon Terry Kath as a guitarist or Jimi's opinion of him, but I have seen multiple sources cite Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top as Hendrix's fav. I can say I've sweated up my headphones playing air guitar to them all!

Then again, Jimi loved more than one guitar player, like Clapton, Rory Gallagher, Terry Kath, and he called King Crimson the greatest band in the world. KC is great, but the greatest? Even Jimi got it wrong sometimes. ☺

Eddie Van Halen was uniquely brilliant but I would rather listen to Angus Young of AC\DC because I prefer his phrasing; he's speaking my language whereas sometimes Eddie seems to be speaking in tongues!
Here’s some awesome CHICAGO trivia -
The Band is rehearsing late into the morning into the night so they’re really tired. Missing their family and friends. So while missing these people they also realized how much they made them happy, they “made then smile.”
One of the band members asked another member -
“Does anybody know what time it is?”
Then another band member looks at his watch and says
“ 25 or 6 to 4”
So the Band literally wrote and recorded three (3) billboard charting songs that originated from one recording session:
1) Does Anyone Really Know What Time it Is”
2) 25 or 6 to 4; and
3) Make Me Smile!!
One other side note. I had the blessing of going to law school in Chicago. And the ending of “Make Me Smile” is an improvisational feeling of leaving the recording studio and heading down one of Chicago’s most celebrated roads - the LSD

If you love horns, you will enjoy the band that influenced Chicago, Blood Sweat & Tears. Their first hit was “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy.” Also, “Spinning Wheel,” “And When I Die,” and “God Bless the Child.” Peace out.

When you hear that voice and that guitar, you understand why Chicago was never the same after Terry Kath died.
Boy, that's for sure. After they had their first #1 hit with the musically boring "If You Leave Me Now", they seemed to abandon their rowdy Rock roots in favor of a more subdued commercial Pop sound.

In addition to other comments about Terry Keith, their guitarist, being the primary singer in this song. the earlier song you heard was with Peter Cetera as the singer, also their bass player. Massive talent in this band!

This is sung by guitarist, Terry Kath while "25 or 6 to 4" was sung by the bassist Pete Cetera. That's why the vocal styles are very different.

Please listen to the whole song -it's called "Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon." This is just one part of the whole thing. You won't be disappointed. There are some cool versions on out there. One from Tanglewood 1970 and a more recent one from around 2014. Tanglewood is your best bet.

Don't overthink Chicago's lyrics. Just enjoy the great classically trained musicians playing great music. The Terry Kath period. 1967-1978 by far the BEST
For the most part, you are correct in saying Chicago's original members were classically trained. There was one exception though, Terry Kath, their guitarist nonpareil, who had NO formal musical education and could not even read music.

I was 18 when CTA was released and I liked, didn’t know exactly what to make of it as it was so unique (still is, I guess) And even way back then the more I heard it, the more I liked it, until I loved it.
I believe the true greatness is how great it sounds 55 years later.
Terry Kath was the heart of the original band, and sang lead vocals here. Another great (but lesser known) rocker with Terry at lead vocals is "Once or Twice".
"Cry sweet tears of joy, touch the sky..." What a great song, with a great singer, and a killer band.
Sometimes you just have to enjoy a song for what it is and don't worry about analyzing.

The vocalist on this one is Terry Kath, the guitar player. "25 or 6 to 4" is sung by the bassist Peter Cetera.
I grew up through the “60s and 70s. The song was about relationships and when you are in one and it puts a smile on your face. That was from the author James Pankow. He the trombonist in the band.
The entire song ( ballad) is around 12 minutes long. What you have listened to is the scale down version for radio. In other words they shortened it up.
I just found this while playing some music from Chicago. My best friend and I had a band in high school and we played two proms and several dances. I am writing this from a hospital room. I had COVID last a year and was in the hospital for nine months. I about died more times than I like to think about but God looked down upon me and and made me smile. I am still in a rehabilitation facility but should be out in two weeks or so.

Terry was Hendrix’s favorite guitarist…Terry had many fantastic solos…Liberation, Poem #58, Listen, California Purples, Introduction, I’m a Man…I’m not much into pop songs…I liked their First album, but just the heavy songs…Their second album has some heavy stuff too…Fancy Colors was my favorite track…After Terry died the heaviness left & don’t think they ever recovered from the loss…Terry was the Focal point, as far as I’m concerned…Peter Catera is a very underrated bassist…
Terry Kath On vocal and playing guitar was pure magic. He was a genius on the guitar and had a voice like no other.

"Make Me Smile" is the first part of a larger suite, "Ballet for a Girl in Buchanon." (The song, "Colour My World," is also part of this suite.) The reprise on "Make Me Smile," is actually entitled, "Now More Than Ever." The trombone solo in this final song is played by Jimmy Pankow, who composed the entire suite.

A brilliant band! The best intro to them is their whole "Chicago Transit Authority" album. It was their first album, and it combines their exuberant spirits with first-rate songwriting.
