  • Here's the latest news on Metformin and on Berberine. I share my experience with both and I also share why I decided to quit taking Metformin and instead, switch over to Berberine.
It's been 2 years since I updated Metformin or Berberine. Yikes! Time to do an update. In the last video, I was kinda on the fence about which to do, or taking both. Now that I've got experience with both, I share my thoughts on each and explain why I tried one, quit, and then tried the other.
And that's where I'm going to stay. For now.

Difficult to talk about the positive ones, as i also take NMN and a few other supplements, but i think, together with apple cider vinegar, Berberine helps keep blood sugar low, and my insulin is about the lowest limit, according to my last couple of blood tests, so that’s a very good marker. I take both Berberine and Metaformin (morning vs evening) for close to two years now.
As far as diarrhea goes, to me that only happens if I take Metaformin 30min + BEFORE food (on an empty stomach), if I take it with food and straight after food, it does not cause any stomach upset, however i also see slightly higher sugar level if take metaformin after food, so there is a trade off of it's suger control effective it seems.
Berbeine HCL also causes stomach upset to me when you take it on an empty stomach before food, but at a far less frequency, and only when you first start taking it, however 1000mg of Berbering HCL does not seem to lower/control the blood sugar level as effective as 1000mg of Metaformin.
Given berberine's possible effect on liver over a longer team, it's probably safer to combine berberine with intermittent fasting, just so you can stop taking berberine when you're fasting so that the liver can recover a bit.
PS: Berberine is processed Huanglian, a chinese medicinal herb used for centuries, if you have low blood pressure you may wanna monitor that when taking berberine/Huanglian, since its used as a high blood pressure treatment chinese medicine.

I’ve looked into Berberine but the problem with it is that it has strong anti-microbial properties which can negatively impact your gut microbiome. I’ve been working with a microbiome specialist for more than a year and she said if I took it, it would eradicate all the progress I’ve made in rehabilitating my microbiome. Given the importance of your gut flora on all aspects of physical and mental health, there should be some consideration to the effects of taking Berberine - especially for long periods of time. There have been studies on Berberine as an anti-microbial but it seems everyone in the longevity community ignores this aspect of the compound and it’s potential effects on long term health. I would like to see more studies done to address this concern and more discussion about it in the longevity community.
