I am 47 and was gaining weight yearly despite exercising a lot, intermittent fasting and different diets. I added Berberine and short HITworkouts to my regimen. I have lost 12 pounds since Jan! And I am not that consistent. When I am the scale really moves! I feel great too!
Started taking it 6 days ago, first three days I had some anxiety, not sure if related or hormonal. Days 4,5 and 6 I have had minimal appetite, it has absolutely killed my appetite as I was constantly voracious before especially wanting to eat something sweet around 2-3pm. In the last few days the idea of eating something sweet is almost....repulsive. Scale went down 2 pounds which is water weight at this point but at least the scale is moving in the right direction lol
My 18 year old daughter was suffering from PCOS! The the doctors would not give her anything for it, and they didn’t understand what was going on. She had her period for two month straight and was low on iron. They recommended her to take iron pills that were not working and to change her diet. Nothing else was given a recommended.. after a couple of weeks of a lot of frustration stress and just watching my daughter, get worse and worse each day I started to research PCOS. I got her on a few supplements from ancestral supplements to keep her iron in check, and help with energy and also I purchased “Pure Encapsulations Inositol!” This really worked for her in two months she was able to lose 10 pounds and started to feel better the brain fog got better as well. Her sugar levels are still a bit high, so I’m going to try this berberine!
I’ve been taking Berberine only a few weeks and I’ve seen a difference. I’m not even taking as a large a dose and only once a day. I think it’s amazing. I’ve had so much trouble shifting weight since I took an injectable migraine medication (ajovy ) and had terrible side affects.
I've always had trouble with taking Metformin, but I read somewhere that taking Berberine with it helps with these side effects. SO I used them together for a few months and now I'm just on Metformin and had no issues. Once I get my diet figured out, I'm going to try switching to just Berberine.

My issues are that it makes me constipated!!! But it does work for suppressing your appetite. Otherwise, it works well for managing weight and other health benefits.
I stopped it because it did constipate me too. I am going to try it again but instead of taking it a 1/2 hour before a meal I will take with 4oz of water with my meal and see if ingesting the 500 mg while eating makes a difference. I also bought the Double Wood brand of Berberine it’s 3rd party tested and less expensive since I’m just checking this out. Both Thorne and Double Wood come highly recommended. I am hoping I don’t experience constipation again as I would love to see my results in a 30 day trial. I had no side affects (except the latter) in the 2 weeks of 500 mg twice a day and it did curve my appetite and my cravings after dinner. I

I’m gonna have to give this a chance as i don’t know what else to do. I fast 3-4 times a week, I eat 3 small healthy portions between 1:pm and 7:30pm, I do 1.5 hours of cardio, and lift weights. I have been doing this since February 18,2023. Although I gained 3lbs in muscle weight (hopefully), I only managed to lose BARELY ONE inch around my waist 😩😭, and I say barely because it wasn’t even a whole inch. Almost but not quite.

I'm no expert, but I personally feel that if your body is having issues losing weight, doing that much high intensity exercise is going to be a "bad" stress. If you're not losing weight doing all that, it sounds to me like some process in your body is not working right. If something is already having a hard time functioning properly, the last thing you want to do is make it work harder. One and a half hours of cardio all at once is way too much in my opinion, especially if you are doing high intensity. Have you tried just walking every day for 30-45 minutes?? @@NadiaKhaledArt thank you so much for your input, to both of you. I am thinking it might be my cortisol leves, so I’ve been thinking of going to go see an endocrinologist. For example, I’ll have French toast on Saturday, and I’ll get myself a Frappuccino on Sunday. I incorporated walking about 2.5 months after I started healthy eating. I walked 4.5 miles every day, and lost about 15-18lbs just by adding my daily walks. Then I hit a plato, so I added lifting back in February of this year. Most of my fat is gone EXCEPT the fat around my core, upper and lower back and belly. I added one to two extra small high protein portions to my diet, to make sure I didn’t strain my body now that I’m lifting. I measured myself so I wouldn’t freak out if I gained muscle weight. I have gained just about an inch of muscle in my legs, calf, and buttocks. However, there hasn’t been a significant change in the fat around my back and waistline. I decrease my cardio to 40 minutes as of yesterday, and like I said before, I added an extra small meal or two to my daily food intake. I can’t seem to be able to get out of this plato, I feel like at this point there is gotta be something going on with my cortisol levels or something along those lines, so I’m going to get that checked. I do however, want to try this supplements out because even though I have health insurance, my deductible is high so most of the cost is out of pocket until I meet the deductible. Same here with the eating window. Have you been able to find teh answer to this? Im trying to figure out timing/frequency specifically for appetite suppression effects to make it easier to lean down
Thanks for your question. While Berberine does seem to yield a positive effect on regulating blood sugar levels, taking it with certain diets like intermittent fasting styles can cause a dangerous drop in sugars for some individuals who are more sensitive to, if this is the case then avoiding berberine while intermittent fasting helps to prevent this effect.
I have just ordered this brand. Didn’t know if it was available in Australia but it is. Im not overweight but I’ve put on weight with menopause that I can not shift at all. I’m 57 years old 175cm and was always 61kgs but last few months that’s shot up to 66kgs. I’m very active and walk about 30kms a week and do two dance classes a week. I’ve tried fasting and low carb/fat . Although I was already eating healthily. I was on Phentermine but it didn’t work. Didn’t lose a pound ! I’m hoping this is going to help with not only the weight but also the other annoying menopause problems of hot flushes, insomnia. Thank you for this info. It popped up at the right time.
I have listened to other diabetic specialists. They state that berberine has a low absorption rate as little as 5%. You did not address that part. Your information is on par with the others though. Thank you
Lifestyle changes surrounding this topic are an integral part of maintaining whatever goals you achieve throughout this process. Be it 5 pounds or higher.
I started taking Berberine about 6 weeks ago. While I’m not technically overweight, I would like to lose a few lbs and have high blood pressure. I’m hoping to see some changes next time I go in for a physical.
Thank you for this video I have just started taking Berberine, I am prediabetic so I am hopeful it will help me both with sugar issues as well as weight loss
I've been seeing this on my feed a lot and I was like what the heck is this? I'm glad this video was recommended. I looked on Thorne and they only have 200mg. I'm 90 pounds overweight and it's been hard to get my weight to budge, so I think I might try it.
Although berebeine may help improve insulin resistance, for those who practice botanical medicine can better explain main mechanisms of action from Monographs spanning hundreds of years. Weight loss is an added affect and not main function. Berberine is a strong antimicrobial and can cause Issues to gut micro biome if not warranted. It can also have detrimental effects on patients with liver disease or create problems if taken concomitantly with ETOH or meds primarily metabolized by the liver. Best advice, don’t self treat. Seek out further evaluation from your local Naturopathic Physician.
Any brand of Berberine works for lowering glucose. It can cause upset stomach so I take it WITH food. I’ve used it for many years, taking it with every meal. However, It has never made me lose weight. Sorry.I don’t recommend taking metformin with Berberine.
@@jaxfl8945 I lose weight when I do Keto Carnivore. But Berberine definitely doesn’t help with weight loss. It’s amazing for lowering glucose. Best of luck.
It's more that leptin is satiety hormone that sits within every fat cell. But when people keep eating anyway they become irresponsive and " leptin resistant" and lose connection with the sensation of satiety. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone.
I took berberine and combined it with intermittent fasting and lost nearly a stone in weight but disappointingly, didn’t lose much off my waist which indicates that I haven’t managed to tackle metabolic syndrome which was an important aim. I initially followed the Cyrus and Robbie diet but the weight loss stopped after a few months so I then tried keto to try and get things moving again. I have maintained a high level of exercise at the gym throughout.
I was taking regular Berberine that had ceylon cinnamon in it, and I really felt like it was helping my blood sugar, and my digestion of starches. Then I heard that dihydroberberine was more effective, so I've been trying that. I don't know if it's because this dihydroberberine doesn't have the cinnamon in it, or if the type of berberine plant it comes from is not as effective for me as the plant that was in the berberine with the cinnamon. 🤔 I'm gonna go back and look at the products to see the plant they used. I like Thorne, too, so maybe I'll try their formula. Or, maybe I'll see if i can find a formula with cinnamon in it using the plant Thorne uses.
If I were you, I'd buy a lb of Ceylon Cinnamon. You can mix in a little water and take side by side with Thorne Berberine. Berberine is the chemical you are after not the plant with Berberine. Goldenseal has the highest source of berberine. It is very bitter. I'd get it in the caps 500 mg by trusted Thorne. Ceylon Cinnamon has twice the content of Cinnaminaldehyde of other cinnamon. This is the chemical responsible for blood sugar reduction. sfherbs has quality herbs at affordable prices. You can get the Ceylon there. More is better. Add it to your oatmeal and other foods, plus take in a little water with your Berberine. That pound will last you 300x longer for the same cost of one bottle! Save money. If you need to, fill capsules.
@valerie4975 Which is odd because there was another doctor saying it was the thing then linked his own products. Really hard to decide when doctors say different things.
I take berberine as prescribed by my functional medicine doctor for managing chronic low grade inflammation. Just wanted to comment on the gut microbiome though! I was recommended to take it with a probiotic because of its connection with changing the gut biome. Is this something you can expand on? I'm curious if it can cause dysbiosis in some people and what the rationale is for prescribing it along with a probiotic.
I don't think berberine, the natural antibiotic, effects the good bacteria in the gut. Not sure if they've studied it. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. Generally speaking, I don't think natural antibiotics kill off the good flora in the gut. It's a good idea anyways to boost your flora with a good probiotic. I'd say it is not necessary though. If I don't come back, it means i couldn't find a study on this.
Hi, I’m not on any prescription meds but I do take vitamins and supplements I would like to start Berberine, but would like to know is there any supplement or vitamin that I should avoid taking while taking the Berberine thanks much, appreciated!!!
I thought that Leptin was NOT the hunger signaling hormone. But rather, the satiety hormone. It was my understanding that Ghrelin is the hormone the hunger signaling hormone. In this video it was stated that opposite is true for Leptin. What’s up with this ?
Thank you for your question. In a general sense, to simplify physiological processes we learn that leptin is the satiety hormone and ghrelin is the hunger signaling hormone. While that is true, it turns out the relationship and systems are interlinked. For example, Leptin resistance causes you to feel hungry and eat more even though your body has enough fat stores. The semantics are as you mentioned, but the roles they play in hunger and satiety are in constant tradeoff. In obesity it’s as so, the amount of leptin in your blood is directly proportional to the amount of adipose tissue (body fat), with obesity, this results in high levels of leptin (hyperleptinemia). Normally this would mean satiety, right? As you mentioned, but actually can cause a lack of sensitivity to leptin, a condition known as leptin resistance. I hope that makes sense
I use to take metformin but my glucose is 4.6- 4.8 im in remission. So i stopped taking the meds which dr continued to prescribed me. I wanted to take Berberine for weight loss. I have 6kg to go.
I've been taking thorne berberine 100mg 1x a day for 3 weeks ALONG with a lower carb diet. I have no idea if it has helped, but I was hoping to take it for PCOS and insulin resistance symptoms.
Berberine doesn't stay in the body more than 6 hours what I was told at least the regular one. I've been taking Berberine for years different brands not a huge difference. Im trying prohealth brand now and attempting the diohydroberberine type. We will see.
Thank you for your informative video on Berberine. I have been taking it in the past, but it somehow I fell out of my supplement list. What is your thought About using Dihydroberberine? It’s not a better quality and better jobs? Since your pharmacist, I think it would have the right answer. Thank you again.
same i took beberine for a week or so, and started feeling sick, (hedaches, nausea, vomiting) and realize my skin was turning yellowish (jaundice). i got my bloods tested and my liver enzymes shot up to the hundreds (mmol/l) so i had to stop taking it. even when i tried to have just 1 pill (1000mg) i get the same violent vomiting reaction.
Can you take Berberine without eating? I just purchased it today & want to start a fasting regimen where I either eat one or two times daily. The brand that I purchased recommends taking it 3X daily.
I added Berberine 3 times a day whilst on a 25 day fast. At the start of the fast I was losing fat but slowly. As soon as I took the berberine the fat loss improved dramatically and I felt just the most amazing energy. Probably because I was now tapping into my energy stores much more efficiently. No issues with low blood sugar, just felt amazing. Berberine will now be a supplement I use forever. Hope that helps.
I’m doing the same; 8/16 intermittent fasting and take (only) 1 500mg at my last meal, before starting my fast. It has help me tremendously reaching my 1st meal of the day with no hunger or problems. I don’t feel like I need to take it at every meal.
There is a big difference between the berry and the berberine it contains. Likely you'd have to eat a crazy amount of berries to get what's in the supplement.
Hi Doctor, what if I only need Berberine for one benefit, let's say weight loss, but it has many more other benefits that I necessarily don't need. For example it lowers blood pressure and I don't want that because my blood pressure is normal, so does it affect anything already within the normal range? Thanks in advance Dr. Arslan Aspires
Thank you for that important question. It is hard to derive just one isolated benefit from berberine as the mechanism of action is set to impact the body as its intended. However, the blood pressure lowering effects of berberine are not significant enough to lower blood pressure below normotensive levels to necessarily cause hypotension. It may help lower blood pressure in settings where high blood pressure exists to an appropriate level though. I suggest measuring your blood pressure throughout the therapy as a precaution if you suspect changes could take place. Subscribe to stay updated for more weekly videos. 😊

Pls make a video on its interaction with other meds like blood thinner, heart meds, best labels to buy with lab test reports etc etc
I have listened to other diabetic specialists. They state that berberine has a low absorption rate as little as 5%. You did not address that part. Your information is on par with the others though. Thank you
Excellent VIDEO! WONDERFUL EXPLANATION! Thank you!😊😊❤❤❤❤❤

This was the most informative video, I’ve seen on this in the shortest amount of time. You’re awesome. Tfs
I have been taking berberine lately, about 2 weeks. after I eat I am so sleepy I feel unplugged.
Didn't the participants in the study lose 5 pounds without making any change besides taking berberine?
Lifestyle changes surrounding this topic are an integral part of maintaining whatever goals you achieve throughout this process. Be it 5 pounds or higher.
I started taking Berberine about 6 weeks ago. While I’m not technically overweight, I would like to lose a few lbs and have high blood pressure. I’m hoping to see some changes next time I go in for a physical.
Any updates? How was it for you? 😊
I didn’t even know berberine had so many uses! I appreciate your information.
Thank you for this video I have just started taking Berberine, I am prediabetic so I am hopeful it will help me both with sugar issues as well as weight loss
Hello. I'm in the same boat as you. How did berberine work for you
@@shane6226 it helps I truly believe. I also think finding substitutes for certain foods are also necessary to make lifetime changes
Thank you for reviewing this. Happy to get your insight.
Of course!
I have been prediabetic. Started taking Berberine 500 mg twice a day. I got violent diarrhea under pressure.
Sorry to hear :(
So what is he advice for us who hav e had GI upset. Should we not take it? I hear about side effects but no instruction in how to proceed.
@@mariec4275 be sure to take it with food-- a full meal- someone mentioned yogurt. And maybe start with 1 a day & work up.

I've been seeing this on my feed a lot and I was like what the heck is this? I'm glad this video was recommended. I looked on Thorne and they only have 200mg. I'm 90 pounds overweight and it's been hard to get my weight to budge, so I think I might try it.

@Shari Woodard ok I'll do that. Thanks
I love Thorne products 😊
Please make a video on how it can help with PCOS
I’ve been taking it for 2 years and haven’t lost any weight!
What's your diet like?
Although berebeine may help improve insulin resistance, for those who practice botanical medicine can better explain main mechanisms of action from Monographs spanning hundreds of years. Weight loss is an added affect and not main function. Berberine is a strong antimicrobial and can cause Issues to gut micro biome if not warranted. It can also have detrimental effects on patients with liver disease or create problems if taken concomitantly with ETOH or meds primarily metabolized by the liver. Best advice, don’t self treat. Seek out further evaluation from your local Naturopathic Physician.
Most cannot afford those docs.
From a naturopath? Not a dr?
What are your credentials?
Any brand of Berberine works for lowering glucose. It can cause upset stomach so I take it WITH food. I’ve used it for many years, taking it with every meal. However, It has never made me lose weight. Sorry.I don’t recommend taking metformin with Berberine.
I never lost weight as well, even though on Keto and IF
@@jaxfl8945 I lose weight when I do Keto Carnivore. But Berberine definitely doesn’t help with weight loss. It’s amazing for lowering glucose. Best of luck.
Thorne changed their formula and now it has sunflower oil (seed oil!)

why did Thorne cut the 500mg berberine down to 200mg? Did they find 500mg to be too strong?
The Thorne 200 link is broken, if you have an affiliate link I’d love to buy it through a link that helps you.
great information, thank you Doctor!
Hi, this was great information. thank you. instead of taking the supplement, can i eat barberries or take turmeric? would it have the same effect?
Hi Dr., I have PCOS and started to take berberine, I noticed that my blood sugar level increased a lot. Should I stop taking berberine?? Thanks Doc!
wow, increased with berberine? Have you lowered your carbs and how do you take it?
I'm taking Aja Nutrition's. (500 MG Berberine, 100 MG Bitter melon fruit, and 25 MG Banaba Leaf.)
It's more that leptin is satiety hormone that sits within every fat cell. But when people keep eating anyway they become irresponsive and " leptin resistant" and lose connection with the sensation of satiety. Ghrelin is the hunger hormone.
What is the difference between the berberine and the double wood berberine? Not sure which one to take?
I took berberine and combined it with intermittent fasting and lost nearly a stone in weight but disappointingly, didn’t lose much off my waist which indicates that I haven’t managed to tackle metabolic syndrome which was an important aim. I initially followed the Cyrus and Robbie diet but the weight loss stopped after a few months so I then tried keto to try and get things moving again. I have maintained a high level of exercise at the gym throughout.
Great lifestyle tips! Thanks for sharing.
Can I take it for endometriosis?
I was taking regular Berberine that had ceylon cinnamon in it, and I really felt like it was helping my blood sugar, and my digestion of starches. Then I heard that dihydroberberine was more effective, so I've been trying that. I don't know if it's because this dihydroberberine doesn't have the cinnamon in it, or if the type of berberine plant it comes from is not as effective for me as the plant that was in the berberine with the cinnamon. 🤔
I'm gonna go back and look at the products to see the plant they used. I like Thorne, too, so maybe I'll try their formula. Or, maybe I'll see if i can find a formula with cinnamon in it using the plant Thorne uses.
You could just take some cinnamon with it.?
Just make sure you only use Ceylon cinnamon.
There was a doctor on UA-cam saying that dihydroberberine is not the thing. Can't remember which one.
@valerie4975 Which is odd because there was another doctor saying it was the thing then linked his own products. Really hard to decide when doctors say different things.
U are a BLESSING to us all 😊 thank U so much Dr!!
Thank you even more for being here and your support is appreciated. :)
When taking Berberine do we combine with probiotics together? if so which one do you recommend?
?! Berberine blocks some potassium channels causing the release of glucose/insulin…helping insulin resistance
Good question.I'm interested to know that too.
It is a natural anti-biotic and anti-fungal.
@EJ257IHI That's the point of the question. You don't want to get rid of the "good" bacteria. So should a probiotic be taken with it.
I would think because it seems to clean the cells of fat and sugars, i imagine it cleans a lot other things even if they are good.
How about eating the berries from the plant?
Hi, I’m not on any prescription meds but I do take vitamins and supplements I would like to start Berberine, but would like to know is there any supplement or vitamin that I should avoid taking while taking the Berberine
thanks much, appreciated!!!
Both my daughter and I used berberine and it caused us to have a nonstop period.
Messed up our hormones big time.
Messed mine up too and I actually gained weight on it
It’s also contraindicated for pregnant women.
Thank you for your information, a lot of knowledge from you I learn more and more every day.
Thank you mostly for being here. Grateful for an audience like yourself. 😊
I'm thinking about taken this product, for lowering my Cholesterol not to lose weight, is this for weight loss or Cholesterol
Took for years works for lowering A1C but not weight. I don’t have diabetes but for prevention.
What if you get off cold turkey after the 12 weeks? If you get symptoms should you lower the dose or get off it?
Hi Doctor, is it ok to take Berberine and also take a daily tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water?
Do you really need a ‘doctor’ to tell you this is fine?
I have read that if you take it for a long time it can affect your kidneys and liver in a negative way is this true?
What's the difference plz between these 2 that you listed? THORNE BERBERINE 500 and the Double Wood Berberine 500 ?
I use to take metformin but my glucose is 4.6- 4.8 im in remission. So i stopped taking the meds which dr continued to prescribed me. I wanted to take Berberine for weight loss. I have 6kg to go.
hows it going
Interesting! Thanks
I took Berberine one for sixty days with no change in my weight.
I've been taking thorne berberine 100mg 1x a day for 3 weeks ALONG with a lower carb diet. I have no idea if it has helped, but I was hoping to take it for PCOS and insulin resistance symptoms.
That’s a really low dose for PCOS.
Should be taking g 1000mg to 2000mg per day. 100mg won't do a thing.
Good information 👍 😊😊
Thank you for the feedback! 😃
Berberine doesn't stay in the body more than 6 hours what I was told at least the regular one. I've been taking Berberine for years different brands not a huge difference. Im trying prohealth brand now and attempting the diohydroberberine type. We will see.
It does work. How does it affect iron levels and absorption?
You are fantastic, Doc
So are you!
@@ArsalanAspires I will be soon as I follow your guidance complete! Love the way you explain it all.......already feel good.....
Thank you for your informative video on Berberine. I have been taking it in the past, but it somehow I fell out of my supplement list. What is your thought About using Dihydroberberine? It’s not a better quality and better jobs? Since your pharmacist, I think it would have the right answer. Thank you again.
I took berberine and it made me vomit almost immediately. I was surprised by my reaction. Just sharing that it’s not for everyone.
Me too. It gave me crampy stomach aches and diarrhea.
same i took beberine for a week or so, and started feeling sick, (hedaches, nausea, vomiting) and realize my skin was turning yellowish (jaundice). i got my bloods tested and my liver enzymes shot up to the hundreds (mmol/l) so i had to stop taking it.
even when i tried to have just 1 pill (1000mg) i get the same violent vomiting reaction.
@@StarComet28 omg that’s crazy, I didn’t think about liver enzymes! I’m glad you figured it out and are okay.
I wonder if you could be having a die off event of fungus and bacteria?
@@TB-yx5ofThat’s my thought exactly. I also had very bad stomach upset with it. I felt dizzy and spacy as well.
Is this safe to take with blood or cholesterol medicine?
I couldn't take it long enough to lose weight...it gave me terrible headaches for some reason 🤷♀️
I read online to take Berberine on an empty stomach, and on another website to take it with food. Which is it?
If you experience nausea while taking it, you should take it with food.
Your video title says berberine 500 but the link is for 1000. I don’t find the 500. Did you cause a run on the 500 level?
If you take 500mg of Metformin for Insulin Resistance, can you also take Berberine?
He said in the video that you should consult with your Dr. Go back and watch from 6:00 on.
Not a good idea
Can I take vitamins and supplements with Berberine?
I took this berry all my life for cooking, make tea, eat raw and not working like people think
how much have you put into your meal? Was the amount 1500g per day? :)
There is a big difference between the berry and the berberine it contains. Likely you'd have to eat a crazy amount of berries to get what's in the supplement.
Good information thanks 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Thanks for Your information but I will love To know how I can found The Berberine in Farmacist? Please let me know Thanks
Hi Doctor,
what if I only need Berberine for one benefit, let's say weight loss, but it has many more other benefits that I necessarily don't need.
