Love almost everything about this video. I do want to say that it is important that you position the open part of the turbine retaining ring, the snap ring that the journal bearing sits on and the compressor backing plate snap ring upwards or against gravity if your center cartridge won't be perfectly upright. If you don't you'll have oil leaks through the small crevice into your housings
You don't have to match or align turbine to impeller. They can be purchased separately for that reason. The balancing of each component is done in the manufacturing. To make it clear, it's like a tire: it gets balanced to itself, not to the other wheel on the other side.
Makes sense to me. I suspected when I rebuilt the Garett and had to replace the turbine. Thanks for your input. Must have just been some old piece of info I heard a long time ago. No harm in being careful though.
thanks for sharing this!! i decided to rebuild mine k04 0028/0029 and your video showed me the way. one question, my kit has 2 journal bearing, like yours. one with a big oil hole and the other with a small one. but on my turbo, it came with the small one. can i just replace it with the one with the big hole, checking orientation of course. thanks in advance
Really useful video! Question, where did you get the parts diagram and torque specs? I'm looking to rebuild a K04. Also, what parts would have needed assembly lube during reassembly?
Just google image search “K03 turbo and exploded view”. Torque specs are mostly standard given thread and material. I would lube the points where the turbine shaft touches the bearings
So, no gasket, no o-ring, or anaerobic sealant on the compressor housing flange??? My 2014 Audi Q5 had a gray sealant. Super thin layer. I was hoping you would use it and tell what to use.
I forgot to mark the compressor turbine wheel. It has marks that show it's been previously balanced. Is there anything I can do without taking for a rebalance?
Someone mentioned in the comments that they are individually balanced. I haven’t been able to verify, but you won’t need to worry about alignment if true.
Sure, I actually did replace mine in this build. The original was full of oil. The difficulty will be in finding one. You’ll probably need to find it on a used turbo.
It is a pretty tight fit. You may have to put the compressor back on, cover the inlet with something and tap it on with a rubber mallet. I did something like that in my video on the Garrett T3.

Use RTV copper, that seals well and isn’t temperature sensitive.

@haoleboyshow-tos2279 I ended up heating the turbine housing with a propane torch and it slipped in almost perfectly!
Question is it the same turbo on the vw jetta 2013 1.4L tsi single charge ?
