It's that time of year and we have lots of cool stuff in the works. Stay tuned.
love the content keep it coming
I'm pumped....Thanks Dave and Clayton for the effort, much appreciated.
next episode, how about asking the same question to the cameraman
@@fyuni-tek9422 Not sure I follow this comment.
What can you rev a standeed 1.8t 20v auq engine
I think this video deserves a part 2. Definitely deserves a series.
I agree. That was a super cool video.
Great video!!! Lots of great info. Thank you.
Mad scientist at CO Motorsports throwing the switch for power like Frankenstein!!! Hyped up!!!
I have a golf mk2 with ajl code block(058) with adr big port head and cams, k03s, full 70mm exhaust, tt 225 injectors(386cc) and a seat sport cooler. I don't know the power of the car but runs very nice. The n/a cams from adr can keep the power higher and it's a good and cheap mod. Your informations are good and you know 20vt engine. Keep up with a part 2!!
great video. looking forward to the next!
I absolutely love this channel. You guys are super informative and entertaining.
Here in south africa the guys say it's easier to make power with the agu engine code. Can't wait for the next videos.
Thought I was the only South African here lol. Yeah the AGU seems to be the favoured one, if I speak under correction this one came with a forged crank.
@Chad Benjamin yes it is also has big port.
I used an app head with a amk bottom end
Running 327 bhp on my k03 hybrid in a mk2 golf, been running decent for a while on an omex 600 aftermarket ecu
Works well for what it is
The AEB has a cast crank, Agu, bam, apy, aum, amk, bjx, Bex all are forged cranks but there are mush more forged. Aeb and Agu are big port. But on my bam small port head I could easily make 500hp. I also went to stainless steel exzhost valves. Stock pistons are very strong.
I swapped an AEB in my corrado and although I love it, if I could do it over Id go with an 06A block vs 058. At the time I had all new G60
parts so I made it all work on a crappy worn out AEB.
Anywho, great video, appreciate the info.
Btw aeb came out in 97, earliest I know of. My block is stamped 97 production date.
Love your videos guys!
Awsome content, I would say big port head Agu 18t.
Awesome video !! What would be the 1.8T engine to go if, like in my case, you want to upgrade from a 1.4TSI (CAXA) exchange-wise? Are there parts I can use from my CAXA to build on the 1.8T? Is there a better fit for a 20V compared to a 16V? I know the airco compressor can be re-used. The power I have in mind is just what's achievable with a good reflash of the chip, as it's a road car and I want reliability.
Very interesting video; thank you ; I have the 225 apx engine; I would like to knowwhich connecting rods I should get (makes),and also which exhaust valves?Concerning the ecu, can I keep the oem one? thank you
I really want you guys to talk about head gaskets and stuff
In South Africa seems the most common mk1 swap is a 2.0 8v or the abf swap. Lots of the guys do that swop. Nice to see and hear other ideas of other swaps.
In Bosnia was Like that few years ago , but then it exploded with this engines with turbo.
But you know nothing runs like a cape town golf with a 8valve in hehe😂
@@alwinhugo5279 lol
Great video. Right now I have an AGU and the APX engine and haven’t figured out what to do when it comes to my build. I have rods but can’t figure out which one to start with 🤦🏾♂️.
I'd go for the 06A engine
Awesome video guys!
One note for anyone that is curious. with an aeb block if you go with forged rods you need to grind down a small portion of the inside of the block(intake side) to clear the cylinder 2 rod. If you go with a aba crank in an aeb block you need to remove about 60% of the intermediate shaft gear in order to clear cylinder 4 rod. I have pictures and measurements if anyone needs them.
doesnt seem like there is many of us left, atleast here in the states. people are moving onto the newer 2.0s and im seeing a lot of people do 07k stuff lately.
@@b5Bart yup I completely agree alot of aftermarket 058 parts are being discontinued. There is def some like us out there but not many left for sure which sucks. I’ve been seeing the same 07k is sweet though. Are you on vwvortex or Audizine we may have crossed paths before if you are.
@@Dap-Racing sure am and im sure we did at one point, ive been doing vw audi stuff for almost 20 years now 👌🤟🤟
@@b5Bart hell yeah that’s awesome to Hear. Have a good one sir. What’s your username on the forums?
I have a question, someone is offering a set of ARP head bolts for £180 which is a lot of money, question is are they worth it over the standard £30 bolts on a 320 bhp car, have you ever had a head lift? At 1.2 bar of boost ?
I have an aeb with 244000 kms 1.5 bar with stock engine only made an me 7.5swap and remap always treating it bad and it not bends do a long block love your videos
I have a stroker 1.8t (2008cc). I wanted to drive it and didn't have the time or money at the time to build out the head. It has a EFR 6258 turbo. Is it worth me poking around and finding an aeb head if I'm gonna build one? I'm thinking about buying another head and having it built and ready so I can hopefully swap everything relatively quickly. Do you guys have certain brands you feel make pretty good valvetrain products, or are most of the common brands pretty decent
Hello guys love you channel. Question I have 2000 Vw Jetta mrk 4 with a 06A block engine code AWD trying to build it for daily driver/street car to push 450 hp to the wheels. Should I run with forged pistons if so which ones work best with IE connecting rods? And what size turbo should I go with let me know thanks guys. Much love from California!
Thank guys , i love your video. I 'm french , my english not perfect but i learn a lot of the 1.8T. about that , i hve question concerne 1.8t ( BJX engine code ) mount in Polo Mk4 ( 9n3). so do you know if all piston in 1.8T are forged piston. also with stock piston and connecting rods after market, how many horse power safe able to, for all days usage ( street). Have a good one
You should also do the 2.0 fsi / tsi please🖤
04 Jetta Wagon AWP running Stage 2 Eurodyne software. Looking to flash Stage 3 soon, what reliable power level would you need to drop some rods in? And also rod choice, IE?
AEB, ADR heads has biger port intake and also have biger camshafts
all 225hp engines and 20 pin pistons has forged internals so the 19 pin piston isnt forged and handle less boost
I literally just bought a 1.8t to chuck in my mk3 mr2 after watching some of you old videos on the 1.8t. gonna gun for 400 with some rods with a Bam.
I own a mk7 1.8 about to install the full unitronic exhaust system and download the stage 2
You guys should do a video about buildings aba/16v turbo
Would you say it’s worth it to do a “stroker” with the 2.0 crank?
I have an '03 AWM 1.8T B5.5 Passat 5 speed wagon with a K03S I need to fix... Damn deer... Now is the time to build it I suppose... This video was encouraging
Not a 1.8t question but about fsi 2.0t, what are the power limits of the stock internals and would i need a hybrid turbo to get to that limit or would a normal k04 be able to get to a safe power level for the stock internals.
I have a 02 Audi TT awp engine. I was looking at a stroker kit, because I wanted to change the rods, thought might as well change it all once in there. Is a stroker kit for these a good route to take?
What about exhaust runner diameter on a tube manifold have you had much experience with 1.1/4” vs 1.5” what’s your opinion
How about the oil pumps between the two different types of blocks? Aeb (058) or awp (06a). Do either of the oil pumps fail more often than the other?
What exhaust valves are better than stock and not $1000 for a set? Currently building a 1.8T with a goal of 350-400whp but more is definitely welcome. Capable of 8000rpm "safely" so springs are a must but I really want this to be a cheap dirty rebuild. Don't judge me! Nothing is going to a machine shop, it's getting a ball hone and new bearings, rods, springs and apparently exhaust valve. Again don't judge me, I have kids and I'm broke!
Supertech do amazing valves for the 1.8t. Inlet valves are never a problem. Must do exhaust valves as valves fail and the head falls off the stem.
That list is curiously missing the ATC engine code, thats what I had in my TT. Canadian car imported into US 01 TT Quattro 5spd with a k03.
Hey, i have a AUQ engine in my golf gti, im looking for about 280-300 whp. Im looking at a gt2860rs and some 550cc injectors with needed components. Is there anything you would recommend?
I just picked up a 2002 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8t and I don’t know what is a good upgraded fuel pump on a budget. So far I have Front mount intercooler , ko4 turbo , has a eBay diverter valve, and stainless 3 inch down pipe with 3 inch straight pipe exhaust all the way back. Also what would be good for my next mods
I was wondering what your thoughts are on running the vvt tensioner in the head as opposed to non vvt tensioners. Is the extra potential power worth the added complication? lastly, I have a Link standalone ecu, so is tuning vvt on 1.8ts as simple as setting on and off based on rpm or is it variable in any way on these engines?
It's on and off, you can use it to help boost onset. Very easy to install also.
2.0 stroker with g35 900 garret 20v heads with NA camshaft and supertech kit
I’ve got a 2006 mk1 cupra r bam
Wots your opinion on this engine please , I’ve got the jabba sport ihi vf22 turbo to go on and the jabba manifold to go with it ,
Wot internal work do you think I need to make it last lol ,
Hello i have a seat ibiza 1.8t fr 2008 and i cant seem to find any parts like downpipe or exhaust do i need to buy cupra parts or any other makes or models parts that fit?
We have a Audi 1.8tfsi burning oil, but thinking of doing some mods, do we change the pistons and rings or just the rings, I'm hearing all kinds of confusing messages on these engine using oil....
Yes! Specific 1.8 question, what MAP sensor should I be running if I'm targeting 25ish lbs of boost? Aiming for 350chp.
Whatever your software is calibrated for. You can't just chuck a larger map in and expect it to work.
Many thanks guys, juste a question, what about screws.. heads / puley cranksahft ... Etc
What is your question in regards to?
Hey guys, I've got a bad wrist pin in my 02 Jetta and I'm going to go ahead and upgrade my rods to IE drop in, the code on the head is AWM but the car has been worked on before I bought it. Is there any way to know for sure what block I have so I don't buy 19mm wrist pin rods if I actually need 20mm wrist pin rods?
Thanks guys for all the info you share on your videos. Taking the opportunity to see some of my doubts anwsered. I bought a TT 225 (APX) as a project car, aiming to push it as far as possible while keep it in realiable for its purpuse. Would like to see +750hp crank.
VVT or No VVT
Valve guide angles? Which?
Oversized valves? Which ones? Exhaust? Intake? Both?
How big do I need to go on the turbo for the 750hp? G30-900?
How much of a difference does going 2L makes, other than spooling?
TDI or TFSI crank?
Get on a forum my man, you'll get a lot more conversation out of the people who are there. UA-cam really isn't good for that sadly.
Unless you live in a very remote area you'll be able to go to car meets and stuff with the people you talk to, added bonus
the limit is 300ft/lb of torque on pump gas "99" on any 1.8t from Volkswagen/Audi/Skoda/seat.
the limit of the block is 900hp. will split after a few runs. block can't really handle 700hp for to long.
I would definitely like to know your thoughts on the amb motors what kind of power can you make on a stock motor with bolt ons differences between amb motors and the others etc
As mentioned in the video, and sort of the point of it... They're all basically the same.
Hi guys loving your 1.8t videos, I have a question about my seat leon mk1 cupra sport 180bhp App engine and it is whats the easiest way to make some cheap power ,also I've had to change my maf sensor twice because when the sensor is plugged in the car runs really bad now I've had to just unplug the maf/map sensor to make the engine happy question is this OK to do ? I have an APU 1.8t which is from the Audi a4 b5 fwd which is the non vvt cast internal engine with 20 mm wrist pins if im using a 35-82 sized turbo what's the max hp I can make one that engine reliably
Are you sure that problem with exhaust valves is in the valves or maybe in the loose chain?
I have almost 175k miles 17mm wrist pin pistons, if I am already there is it worth upgrading anyways?
What type of material are you using for your cylinder sleeves in your drag car or a high horsepower build engine 1.8T? Also what piston rings are you pairing them with? Ty
Just stay stock. No need to be coating cylinder walls
I’m building a big turbo Gen 3 1.8t. I’m stroking it to a 2.0 with ie Tucson rods and pistons with other supporting goodies and making an entire Frankenstein shooting for 500whp/wtq either or. Am I wasting my time?
my exhaust cam has a tick it's coming from one of bearing caps it's not smooth. Is something to worry about?...thanks.!
Can you comment on the APH engine? Specifically a sense of safe and reliable power ceiling, and thoughts on the fixed vs variable cam? I have upgraded a ton on the car, including a K04 and full intake/exhaust path, but never cracked open the internals.
As the video implies. They're all mostly the same.
On the subject of pistons. I'm assuming new OEM pistons with aftermarket rods would be more advisable than using the old pistons out of my 205k mile engine. And on that same note, would you advise just trying to find the 20mm wrist pin pistons since the aftermarket rods are easier to find in that size? My old MK4 is tired and i want to show it some love after 6 and a half years of service.
You can reuse the pistons out of your motor as long as they are not damaged. (I.e. valves never made contact). If you have the smaller wrist pins and want upgrade to 20mil wrist pins, then yes, get new pistons
Aeb or agu pistons. Check piston to wall clearance if your worried
I have 2016 jetta sport 1.8t. Want to swap turbo to is38. Cannot find any videos on this
Also 058 - AEB, AJL has M11 head bolts. 06A - AWP, AWM etc has M10.
Yes correct. The video is way longer than we expected. Point mainly...is if you're building it...it doesn't matter.
Build a aeb 1.8t😉 I’m also commenting before watching the video all the way through lol
Awp 1.8 for sure
Don't pre-facelift A4's like the AEB 1.8t have smaller (flow less) injectors?
I am new and want to swap CIS to carb. Any suggestion’s? 1985 vw golf. Built in Pa! Thank you for these vids. Super helpful!!
My suggestion is don't do either. Lol
@@COMotorsports I purchased a 1985 golf for the intent of fixing it up for just an around town drive. Nothing crazy but what if not carburetor and I can’t get the cis working?

Hello COMotorsports, iam planning to buy audi TT 1.8T 132kw quattro manual. What upgrades i will need to reach 400-500 HP?
Question: On an AWP, if head's in good shape any special work needed to install supertech exhaust valves?
Any machining required from the machine shop?
Could new exhaust valve simplycbe installed?
Thanks....
As long as they're stock size, lapping and ensure they're sealed up is all that's needed.
I have a BT Audi TTQ with a 3076, if you’d be down to chat about a few things that’d be great!
Another thing the TT225 engine is a webbed block with oil squirters in different location then the other 1.8t’s. The AEB block has a external water pump and shaft driven oil pump.
No the 225 engine really doesn't lol
@@matk22 really doesn’t what
Could you guys do a 2.0 8v video? Like this video. Different ways to get more power, difference between parts you can swap out from 1.8t’s, 1.9’s and mix Match parts?
Unlikely, in my nearly 2 decades of doing this I haven't turbo'd one single 2L 8v. So needless to say they're not common, nor do I have any parts around that I could chuck at one. If someone wants to donate a decent manifold sometime I could likely make it happen.
Aba block with aeb head aka 20/20 swap
Aba came with thicker beefer pistons, forge crank, and oil squiters.
Unfortunately I cant provide you a video but I used to have a MK3 Gti 2.0 8v turbo`ed here in Argentina and made around 260 chp on stock internals using a electromotive stand alone in those times (2008) was very exciting back in the day!
Small port head Stock Vs ported on same tune .. curious to see what gains could be made
To many variables.
Small port is good up to 450bhp but even then people have used a small port over 600bhp
The real difference will be small port flows better down low in the revs due to port velocity
The large port flows better up high revs due to port size and volume over the small port
i’m new to the euro scene and the volkswagen/audi stuff. But I just got a 2002 Audi A4 Avant with 1.8T is this a good 1.8T to build up? need advice
They're all basically the same. Slight differences but if you're building one all mods apply across the board.
Ey up I have a A3 large Port AJQ and a TT small port Bam which would be the best to build bud 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
you have external waterpump 058 type block in a mk4 golf in canada (the 2.0l 8v where you talk about)?
in europe its also a 06a engine with internal water pump.
in europe the 1.8t 06a have also a forged crank, alot of 1.8t's are a AUQ code, 180hp, 19mm pin, forged crank, smallport head, 06a block
No internal waterpump 06a in mk4 2.0l and 1.8t.
Is the BEA engine any good ? I have it in a mk1 TT with the 6spd and it needs a little work but timings all been redone just wondering what to look for and what to build for making more power
All the 1.8ts are basically the same, which I think we covered in the video. Only major difference was between internal and external blocks. Yes there are subtle differences, but nothing that makes one much better than another.
Please tell me one of those motors you picked up is a vr6
great info
Excited for Hoopte teardown, maybe it really had rods in it? can never tell with these used cars.
Time will tell. :)
I wish yoy guys were located closer because I'd let you guys build up my 1.8t in my a4 quattro
I have a question, I did some reading on tuning 1.8t vvt with window switches and I’d like to know if utilizing that system is a viable option or worth the time
All depends on power goals and what the vehicle is used for. Typically big power not used.
Bought a 1.8t Jetta….Went completely oem my motor has been totally resurrected/resurfaced. Everything has been gone through besides fuel pump. Got some gauges. My air/fuel ratio is 22.1. Should be around 14.1. Also I was told I need a tune…. New to the vw scene. Starting from scratch with all stock internals. It has a front mount intercooler and full exhaust. Not trying to make a ton of power I just want it to be healthy. 2004 1.8t awp manual 5-Speed. I need tips ab a tune and my afr
So the "tune" aka ecu flash should help solve your afr ratio unless theres a nasty sensor feeding it the wrong air or fuel intake data
got my 2000 vw passat 1.8t atw hanging out of the car, any budget mods i can do besides the gaskets?
Tune it
Hey, i an new to your channel. I love the content i got a vw mk4 jetta with a AWD 1.8t engine i want to mod it in the future to puch close to 350 to 400 wheel hp what upgrades do you recommend no matter the price to make the car hit that power and still be a reliable car. At the moment is fully oem nothing was ever swaped out buly the privious owner other than all the maintenance. The car also has 128k miles but iwas well taken car of all it life form what i know fron tge perso i got it for i even got the maintenance history that says that all oil changes were done every so 5000 miles. What do you guys think i should do.
Just look up tunes for that power value and see what requirements are needed on hardware to support the software. Easiest way really. Main things are upgraded rods turbo injectors fuel pressure regulator intercooler intake and exhaust.
I want 100-200 8,5-9sec just methanol with pump gas.. how should i setup for A3 1.8t 150hp
Got any advice for an AWW engine for about 250 whp
I have an aeb from my 99 Audi a4 I want to get 4-500 and what is the best way to do this so I don’t blow it up
For the Mk7 1.8t what would I need to future proof my engine for more power? Specifically around 600 crank horsepower.
The gen3 1.8t is a different animal, you're biggest issue will be tuning at that level. You'll want to figure that out first.
I want to see you build a AWD. Considering that’s what I have and i want to learn how to pull a rabbit out of a hat so to speak…I love your guy’s channel
There's a couple on the channel already.
Not all wheel drive lol I seen those and makes me want to swap it but I was talking about the AWD head on 06a block has forged crank but none VVT the year before the AWP came out. I love y’all’s all wheel drive content you guys make it seem so simple but it’s very expensive to do! I can’t wait to learn about all the 1.8t no matter what you guys build!
@@joshuapellegrino7915 Ahh.. but if you watch this video... you will see it really doesn't matter. The different codes are irrelevant. It's basically big port or small port, that's it. So building an AWD head, or AWP or any of the others it makes no difference it's all the same.
I've held onto an AWW out of an '01 that had 286k when it was pulled, ran fine, didn't burn oil, that I want to build eventually. The block has some rust on the outside. At what point is the external condition of the block a compromising factor?
The external is never a factor. But cylinder walls can and will rot. I had an engine sitting for a year and didn't realise. The bore is pitted on 2 cylinders. And with out a heavy hone or rebore I've scrapped it
What block does Clayton have under his AEB head? Just planning for my second 18T build and have a second AEB head.
AWP
This is very difficult topic, essentially all 20vt are the same but very different when you start comparing engine codes. You should consider engine code when you are going to run stock ECU because thats were the biggest difference is. Some come with narrowband, some with wideband, cable throttle, drive by wire etc etc. Proven combination for low budget sub 500hp is 225hp(if you have later model 150 or 180 with me7.5 just buy a second hand 20mm wristpins pistons) to start with because it has the 20mm wristpin, me7.5 ECU. Buy a set of rods and exhaust valves and thats about it. Turbo choises are endless, very good solution for turbo is a k04-064 from next gen S3 with adapter plate that will give you about 400hp with spool from 2500rpm.
The engine doesn't care what ECUs controlling it.
@@COMotorsports correct but if you are to start with a car with narrowband ecu, cable throttle body it is a pain converting to later model me7.5 wideband ECU and drive by wire. Again thats if you are planning on using stock ECU and not standalone, if you are going straight for standalone ecu doesn't really matter whichever engine you pick.
@@aleksandaraleksandrov8213 I understand your point however this video wasn't about the vehicles they came in, which is why we didn't discuss that. It was strictly about building a 1.8t engine.
Hi, I just seen your comment.
I have a cupra r 1.8t 2005 bam 225bhp.
I’m looking to achieve around 350-400bhp, what do you reckon I need to achieve this power?
Will a hybrid turbo be sufficient?
Or like u mentioned a later s3 turbo from 2.0tsfi be better ?
Will exhaust valves and rods be enough?
I would appreciate any information.
Thanks.
@MrOki419 Hi, depending on what you would like to do with the car. If you want nice easy to drive quick street car, definitely the k04-064 is the way to go. Rods are a must as well as exhaust valves. Also, you will need a minimum of 630cc injectors, bosch 044, or equivalent fuel pump and decent size bar and plate intercooler with at least 2.5" pipework to go with it, 3" downpipe with ideally 3" catback system and a very good tuner who could make work of the hardware on the stock me7.5 ecu.
I’m hoping to rebuild my MK1 Audi TT 1.8T lol I die inside everyday I look at it. Hopefully one day it makes 300hp+
Hey guys I've got a 2014 1.8t ea888 gen 3 that I got in a good deal, trying to do some modest mods I've got about 2k to spend what would you recommend?

What are good companies or websites to get aftermarket parts for the 1.8t’s
comotorsports.ca
Hey man I built mine but I have a few questions, I want to delete my evap and and pcv but I am lost where to hook up the Lines or block what you know
Google, the answers are readily available.
What about the 20V heads?
1.8T question: How do you do 1.8t breathers on higher hp cars? Is it normal to have more oil coming up from the head compared with the block breather?
Also, could a very restrictive (valved muffler, when closed) to cause a bit more breather blow by? Keep up the good work!
Change the elbow on the block to a metal one. Then use 19mm oil/fuel grade rubber hose link the crank and cam breathers and either run to atmosphere or to a high flow lol can. And the atmosphere back to the inlet.
Personally I run mine to atmosphere to avoid any oil blow by or condensation going back through the system.
@@matk22 This is ruffly what I have at the moment, but with plastic connectors. The thing is, I see quite some oil being dumped, as it's venting to atmosphere. And I suspect it's coming from the head, not the block.
@@HidRomail you could run seperate hoses and check. If it's from the head might just be poor oil or old oil
If it's from the crank then it'll be due blow by and that's down to work rings.
Can do a compression test to see what the engines doing
@@HidRomail Get a Cloude9Customs billet breather elbow. They're amazing
I have an awm code looking for the 400 hp range would I be good to make that with rods bearings and exhaust valves for the internals?
If you mean rods and bearings then yes... if you're just saying rod bearings and stock rods well... you're living on the edge. lol
