    When an organization isn't challenged for nearly a thousand years, it becomes stagnant and closed minded. I believe the Jedi Order would've greatly benefited from oversight and checks & balances on its power. This would allow for the organization to grow and evolve to face the many challenges the galaxy was facing.

    In Legends, this already happened with the Ruusan Reformation, where the Jedi would placed themselves under the supervision of the Supreme Chancellor and the Judicial Department. The Jedi couldn't just go and accept any mission that they wanted, they needed the permission of the Supreme Chancellor. That's why a lot of Jedi liked Chancellor Valorum and to some extent Chancellor Palpatine because they would send the Jedi on more missions than the prior Chancellors.

    With the Dragon Age example we should keep in mind that the Templars also have their own set of problems as an institution. A recurring issue in that setting is the difficulty in balancing authority and autonomy between two different groups. So in Star Wars we have to consider how the Jedi fit into the establishment AND how that establishment affects them in good and bad ways. (i.e. High Republic era vs Empire era)

    In my view, the problems ultimately lied with the Republic itself because there are times that the Republic has become the very thing the Jedi despised, with or without the manipulations of the Sith Lords. Also, I always think the Jedi Order isn't supposed to become part of the Republic at all. So the best solution to me is for the Jedi to leave the Republic and become its own entity with neutrality to the ones who are part of the Republic and those who are not. As for dealing with the Sith, the Jedi can only come when the threats of the Sith emerged and the Republic actually made a plea for help from them for real.

    I like the dragon age comparison but it technically creates another problem. Quite a few Templars abused their power and mages suffered a lot as a result. Eventually getting so bad that the mages rebelled

    • @princeytron
      @princeytron Рік тому +3

      True but they rebelled with a barely over 50% majority vote. And it was mostly sprung from a single event (Kirkwall). The issue was that the mage circles were so diverse in how they were run. Some were havens for mages to learn and be protected, with good relationships between mages and templars. Others were oppressive hells that repressed and harmed mages. The circles were isolated with their own leaders and structures and were spread out on a pre industrial society with primatial communication and no way to centralise. In a modern/future setting with the technology level of Star Wars, I’m sure you could revise the Templar-mage model to fit the Jedi in a way that wouldn’t have the same shortcomings

      Yeah I mean I really love that the problems he points out in the Jedi simply don't exist in the highest canon, the movies, their problems are all the opposite (they're puppets of the Republic) and we watch any independence they have left get eroded and go along with it meekly until they finally give a little push back, Palpatine uses that against them, and suddenly they find themselves backs against the corner and then he lets them find out who he really is so that they have no choice but to do a blind assault which he uses as pretext to wipe them out. The entire narrative of the Jedi Order in the prequels is the exact opposite of the one Alan lays out. He is 180 degrees off.

  • @joshuahartman3132
    @joshuahartman3132 Рік тому +9

    It's an interesting thought. While the Mandalorian are the modern Canon compliant choice, my first thought was actually the Imperial Knights from the old Canon, the ones who served under Roan Fel. They weren't Jedi, but were Force users sworn to serve the Empire while remaining on the light side. And part of their oath was to take down the Emperor himself, should he turn to the Dark Side, an oath which at least one of them carried out, if I remember correctly. They weren't really a safeguard against the Jedi, more of a counterpart to them within the Imperial Remnant. Perhaps a rival Order like that could serve the purpose of keeping the Jedi in line and actually assist the Jedi in hunting down any of their number that should happen to turn, the same way they would take down their own leader should he turn. Of course the Mandalorian idea is probably a much simpler way to go. But then again, even in Dragon Age most of the Templars took their duties TOO far, to the point where they became less guardian and more...well, prison guard. If that sounds the same, consider the difference between a parental figure referred to as a Guardian versus a Prison Guard, and you'll get my meaning. So maybe of the Mandalorian guardians included Jedi or non-Jedi Force users in their numbers, ones who would be more inclined to treat a Dark Jedi threat appropriately without going too far?

  • @arccollins
    @arccollins Рік тому +7

    Allen, the Jedi did answer to the senate, and the Senate had a tendency to wield them in place of a centralized military instead of letting them be as a monastic order focused on the force. I always think that’s one of the biggest reasons the Jedi were prone to corruption. They had too many tangled strings attached to their relationship to the republic, too many duties to questionable interests.
    UA-cam lost 3/4 of my comment. Let’s try to type this out again. One of the more notable instances that I think illustrates this was the Arkanian Rebellion, in 50 ABY. The senate sent Mace Windu to quell an uprising on the world of Arkania, and it was a disaster. The Arkanian government was infamously corrupt, racist, and generally prone to operating like mad scientists without an ethical review board. When it came to light that they had completely and deliberately subverted the evolution of an entire sentient species in a nearby system in the process of their experiments, a section of the population decided they’d had enough and rose up in armed rebellion, intent on replacing the Arkanian Dominion with more moderate leadership. Mace Windu and the other Jedi sent were merciless and brutal in their crushing of the rebels and they did the senate’s bidding without question or putting weight to both sides in the conflict.
    It’s the same thing that Dooku encountered again and again and led to him turning against the order. The Jedi should never have been enforcers for a government body or bound to other groups’ political interests, and I believe that this is what led them to decline in force sensitivity and become stagnant and corrupt. When you are beholden to outside forces whose interests run against your own, it is easy to lose your own personal direction. By the time of the clone wars, the Jedi had long forgotten who they were, and were tangled up in dogmatic adherence to rules that they no longer remembered the purpose of, and therefore could no longer critically examine when it was most important. This is why it was so easy for Sidious to push them further into becoming unfit military leaders, and stretched them to such a point they were easily broken. The Jedi should have been monks, allowed to follow and study the force. They needed better internal governance and policing, and to treat themselves as an allied body instead of a branch of the senate. I would say your suggested third party should exist, but as ambassadors, certainly not sending jackboots to watch their every move and tell them when to go to war... Though I suspect you were joking about putting the Mandos in charge of them.
    Anyway, I love your videos, you’re probably my favorite Star Wars UA-camr because you have a damn heart about some things that most others don’t. I do think we have some different points of focus when it comes to lore, and therefore a difference of perspective. Keep bringing us the excellent insights!

    The Imperial Knights from the Legacy comics were a great example of how much better a Force-using organization could be when it *was* subject to rules and regulations. I do like the idea of Mandalorian "internal affairs" officers, perhaps with little backpacks inside their armour holding ysalamiri. Also, Ahsoka, as a Republic citizen, should have got a lawyer, a good one, and sued the Jedi for defamation and wrongful dismissal at the very least.

    I think you're right that some sort of regulatory body might have been able to keep the Jedi Order from getting in its own way. They might have been able to prevent the likes of Exar Kun from rising. But who would they answer to? If it's the Chancellor's office, which seems like the most obvious choice, I think things will play out mostly the same. It was the Chancellor that wanted the Jedi to lead the GAR after all. If this organization answers to him, they would likely encourage the Jedi to integrate with the GAR more quickly and completely. Under those circumstances, Order 66 might have happened sooner.
    I'm not sure that the Mandalorians would be the best choice to make up this group. Sure, they have the equipment and training to take on a Jedi, but your typical Mando is way to aggressive to really fill this role. They are always look for the next biggest fight, which tends to be Jedi. Lots of room for abuse.
    And speaking of abuse, modeling this organization after the Templars of Dragon Age is not a great a idea either. The Templars were mostly religious fanatics that were taught to hate and fear magic. They essentially applied the Tarkin Doctrine to the mages. Which had the exact result as in Star Wars. Rebellion.

They even had magical lobotomies as a safeguard. That all ended in a civil war. Imagine if Jedi lobotomized padawans if they were caught pursuing a relationship because it was too much of a risk to fall to the Dark Side. Children like Anakin would have just been executed if they were considered too old for Jedi training. They were definitely underregulated but the comparison was a fairly negative one.

While there are good examples of decent Templeres, more often than not, they view mages like a plague and all must be prisoners to them. While partially necessary, I'd say half the general population still viewed them as evil. I doubt this would really work. Imagine you have an organization of anti-Jedi run independently. Palpatine gains political power, takes control of this organization as Chancellor, and slaughters the Jedi with it. Such an organization would be perfect for Sith manipulation. If anything, it actually sounds a lot like the Mutant Registration Act in X-Men or the Sokovia Accords; a way of counteracting the power of one group that only leads to potentially more problems.
    In a universe with Jedi/mutants/superheroes, where some people are just enormously more powerful than others, and are capable of taking over control of planets entirely on their own (either through their combat abilities or mind tricks), I'm not sure US-style democracy with checks and balances really makes sense. The real reason the Jedi were nearly wiped out was because the Republic's style of government was vulnerable to Sith manipulation, and the Jedi were conveniently incapable of realizing it. After all, the Jedi Order system resulted in peace for over 1000 years, which is pretty good for a galaxy-spanning government.
    I once took a course on Roman history, and the professor made a compelling point that, despite all the imperfections of the Roman Imperial system, it was actually fully capable of surviving on its own. He argued, convincingly, that the Roman Empire fell because external threats, not internal ones. The Jedi Order seems similar--flawed, but not doomed to fail. Palpatine was just too good.

    Not gonna lie, not sure that the DA mage circles are the best example. Though it all existed for a reason (those dam Tevinter Magisters) they were a liiiiitle bit extreme (on both sides granted) when it came to things like basic human rights. I mean mages not being able to be in relationships, own property, get married, and in some cases not even leave the circle grounds (and like in DA2 forced into confinement and constant invasive searches for bloodmagic). Not to say that the concept is bad, but a central focus of dragon age was just how corrupt and divisive this system had become. DA2 i think showed it best, all it takes is someone like Meredith and Orsino creating tension, then one extremist like Anders then boom, global scale war.

Regardless, I think a whole check system like the DA Templars might have actually worked provided there was a bit more attentiveness payed to the rights of force sensitives as well as Government oversight for both parties (as compared to the DA templars/chantry system). What do u think?

    • @zacharyhansen9103
      @zacharyhansen9103 Рік тому

      @@canyonduck2022 I don’t think there is a perfect system that will work indefinitely.
      The Templars worked as long as they did because they had more rights and responsibilities than the mages. So long as they took their responsibilities to the mages as seriously as they took their responsibilities to the larger public than things worked fine enough. However once they started disregarding their responsibilities their extra rights became a means of corruption and encouraged the rise of evil not good within their ranks.
      If the Mandalorians were in the same situation as the Templars the same thing would happen. It would probably happen sooner rather than later given how pride tends to be a more common trait in Mandalorians than a sense of duty is.

    Love the mandalorian Templar check and balance idea. I think it’d be helpful and bring more favoritism to the mandalorians in the galaxy of Star Wars instead of this view that they are primarily. like death watch, ruthless and only caring for blood and glory and themselves. The mandalorians would have more honor and respect of the wider range of the galaxy and would also be a great military presence. Point is that if the mandalorians were ever to be apart of the republic militarily as the Jedi’s counterpart. The galaxy would probably be a lot safer if a place.

Do the Jedi still go in unilaterally, or do they get Republic law enforcement involved? Because looking solely at Palps as a Sith, the Jedi have some (flawed) legitimacy in how they handled things. In the alternative scenario I'm not so sure that he would have been able to manipulate his way out of the situation. At least not so easily.

Lest he be seen as the dictator he really was. Also, since it was not illegal for a Chancler to be a Sith lord, once they confronted him with this knowledge, they could have said 'okay, that's fine.' and left the room, if he didn't admit to being the one who started the war in the first place.
