And Palpatine would have encouraged it. It is the way of the Sith that the Strongest survive and the weak perish. He knew well how to manipulate the weak. And even published ways how to manipulate weak people in his Dark Side Compendium. But it was part of this infighting Palpatine encouraged in the Imperial Military that encouraged the Rebellion to establish a very formalized and united military command structure. In a way, the Rebellion's victory was being what the Empire wasn't.
@@roboflex3162 I don't think that infighting is necessarily an integral part of fascism, I don't think that Benito Mussolini's fascist Italy had near the same amount of infighting as Nazi Germany did. But then again, I'm not nearly as well read on the nature of fascist Italy under Mussolini as I am with Nazi Germany under Hitler. But Hitler certainly did foster and nurture the internal rivaly within the Third Reich at the expense of a much more efficient and probably effective Germany. But his purpose for all of that internal rivalry was to keep all of his lieutenants too busy squabbling with each other and trying to build and protect their own little fiefdoms so that they would be too busy doing that and wouldn't have the time or energy to plot to overthrow him. The same was probably the same in Star Wars with the Emperor, keeping his lieutenants busy squabbling with each other, not that he really needed it given that he had Force powers.
I didn't realize that the Stromtroopers were part of the Imperial Army. I always figured they were part of the Imperial Navy. I always saw them as the Star Wars equivalent of Marines. The landing force of the Navy. Also because they are mainly stationed on Star Destroyers.
It’s confusing, they were their own military branch, as a example they weren’t neither luftwaffe nor whermatch, they were ss but in the Disney canon the things are weird so I just ignore it figure out the things still working like they used to
I always saw them as a "marines" force as well, or at least a close analogy in form and function, and not an Imperial Army detachment. (I suppose this could also vary by period, i.e., army in the Republic period and marines in the Empire.) Is there anything in the extended canon/lore/whatever sources which list the Stormtrooper corps as being a division of the Imperial Army?
@@GAJake The Marines are not techincally part of the Navy, we're an independent branch of service within the Department of the Navv. This means that the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Chief of Naval Operations are on the same level as each other and both report to the Secretary of the Navy.

Despite popular belief, the Wehrmacht was not the name for the German Army during WWII, the Army was simply called the Heer and today it's the Bundsheer. What the Wehrmacht was was the name for the combined armed forces, excluding the Waffen SS, of Germany during WWII. This becomes clear when you do in depth reading into the German military operations during WWII, you'll see mentions of Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) and Oberkommando der Heer (OKH) which were the high commands for the military as a whole and the high command for the Army itself. Often times there will be mention about competition between OKW and OKH with the OKH largely supllantinng the roll of the OKW by war's end.

@@acorgiwithacrown467 yeah, but japan took it to the extremes. Imperial Army Officers were known to arrange assassination attempts on Imperial Navy Officers and vise-versa. Hell, one of the main reasons that Admiral Yamamoto was put in charge of the combined fleet was to protect him from the army.

It was tied in some respects to Japan's feudal samurai past. The army officer class was dominated men from the Chōshū Domain and the navy officer class from the Satsuma Domain, and the two were historical enemies.
Interservice rivalry will also make a coup, mutiny or defection a lot harder, both in fiction and real life. That charismatic captain might be able to convince his crew to defect to the rebellion but the stormtrooper stationed aboard his ship probably have other views. And that Imperial Army general may be able to convert that planet into his personal domain, but without navy support, if will become his prison.
Yeah, there's a reason the beginning of the voyage in _The Hunt for Red October_ sees the captain call the political officer into his cabin for a toast and then murder him. And as a matter of fact, a GRU agent hidden in the crew very nearly sunk the submarine with everyone important on it near the end.
The Attempted Assassination of Hitler in Operation Walküre had only 2 Kriegsmarine members for that reason. The Navy saw itself responsible for the surrender of WW1 and vowed to not let that happen again (fight to the last shell). This is why the Wehrmacht Members didn’t trust the navy

it’s like this in most real life countries; maybe not hatred, but a rivalry. In the UK there is a big rivalry between our two elite infantry units, Royal Marines (Navy) and Paras (Army). It’s definitely more of a friendly rivalry, especially since the Marines and Paras tend to be deployed and fight together very often. And it’s not uncommon to find a Para who’s actually completed the Marine commando training course and earned the green beret, or to find a marine who’s completed the Para course and earned the “wings”. Plus even other british military units in all branches can choose to complete the Marines or Para training courses.

As such, they are part of the RN, and it is not uncommon for Royal Navy ships even now to have a detachment of Marines for if they need something captured.
At the end of the day, you're not going to win a war if you can't put boots on the ground. Palpatine put all his eggs on escalating aggression with orbital bombardments and planetary-killing WMDs. But you can't hold ANYTHING if you don't have boots on the ground. Never underestimate the importance of Infantry.
That's probably why China is hesitant to do anything in regards to Taiwan for the time being, especially after seeing Russia effing it up so badly in Ukraine with their botched invasion. The distance of water between China and Taiwan isn't very large but it might as well be given the notorious difficulty of amphibious landings and the sheer logistics involved with moving the required equipment and boots on the ground needed to hold territory (outside of reducing Taiwan to smoking embers thanks to overwhelming missile bombardment but China would be foolish to want to rule over mere ashes). China is trying to build up its naval fleet and investing in amphibious ships and vehicles as a result.

Naval Historian and UA-camr "Drachinifel" has several segments of the rivalry between the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Navy. The IJA even had it's own naval forces because the IJN had other ideas about supporting operations. Sometimes the inter-service rivalry fighting between the IJA and IJA took precedence over fighting the US.
Simple. One is the Navy and the other is the Army. Aged old rivalry. Even in real life we have similar rivalry that even lead to several assassination attempts. I'm talking about the Imperial Japanese Army vs the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Also, not quite to the same level, but what about the WW2 Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine? That was a legendary rivalry, with both of them trying to suck up to Hitler to get resources - a power struggle that the Luftwaffe pretty much won after the Bismarck was sunk, and the bad-tempered painter threw a tantrum and basically all but ignored requests from the Kriegsmarine for the rest of the war. Which was ironic, as the British government viewed the Kriegsmarine's U-boat fleet as the only thing that seriously had the potential to knock Britain out of the war at the time.
I really enjoy this channel. It's helped me through rough times this year. My dad got me into Star Wars on Christmas in 1991, as soon as my mom let him show me... but now this is my 3rd Christmas alone since losing my dad in Fall 2020. Don't worry tho. I love the perspective you put on rivalry, but what about joint operations? Just like in the real world we live on with coordinated Forces elements (ie: AirForce+Army or Navy+Marines) we saw similarity in ESB during the battle of Hoth. It is Vader's fleet invading with newly appointed Admiral Piett but its ground troop lead commander was General Veers in his green army fatigues, not an admiral or a Navy superseding the Snowtroopers. Once the Shields generators were destroyed, Veers passed on command to Vader for the next military target within Echo base itself. Would be cool to see more joint ops from the Empire and how successful or unsuccessful this has been.
In the Imperial Army being recruited from the working class and outer rim is one of the reasons why the empire fell With Palpatine gone and operation cinder, I'm quite sure a lot of the Imperial Army reassessed their loyalty
Even with all the real world inter service rivalry we all have to be nice to the step kid, the Coast Guard. After all, recruiting got bad enough that they had to relax the rule on all applicants being at least 6 foot tall so that they could walk to shore if the boat sank.

On the subject of Imperial Japan, Hideki Tojo, chief of its miltary was an absolute madman. The man would sooner see his country - and his people - driven to annihilation than accept defeat.
In fact, he was a parody of himself. He stayed away from fighting throughout the war. It's not about him using the sword in the first line, but he could personally supervise the combined operations from the ship's bridge. He couldn't do it. Also I think that the Imperial Navy had troopers. THey just were rarely used. I know that when Solo was court martialled he was put into the naval troopers (and somehow the Navy had a substantial ground presence on Mimban).
I think the strife was intentional because I get the feeling that the Sith are sorta Chaos Stupid, with a dash of Edgelordyness so they get off on the suffering and big dick power but have a bad organization that doesn’t mutually support each other.

This was an amazing video and only proves more as to why the republics military was much more effective because all the branches knew they needed each other. It also helped the fact that the clone soldiers which made up the majority of the republics forces had a deep sense of brotherhood to each other no matter the branch given they were literally brothers through cloning. I feel that despite the imperial militaries many advancements it had no hope of defeating the rebellion because the rebel forces as the very least were all untied while the empire’s military branches were bickering amongst each other. And it ultimately would be their petty rivalries and arrogance that would destroy them. So sad that very few imperial commanders knew this and basically had to deal with it.

Hiyo! Long time fan. Just wanted to comment on a previous video, can't recall which, where it was mentioned that Imperial Stormtroopers were elite soldiers, not the army, and somewhat like the US Marines. The point being that like the marines, they needed the navy to bring them around. Reckon that's a little off. The original marine function was to protect ships from boarders during the age of sail. Small contingents on each ship; the US Navy still does this for the capital ships, mainly the carriers, these days protection against sabotage. Later, yes, the halls of Montezuma and the shores of Tripoli spoke of their close to shore activities. I reckon George Lucas saw the bucketheads as like the SS of WW2; clearly WW2 was his model in terms of dogfighting starfighters as well. The Waffen SS (the military wing of what started as Hitler's bodyguards) were also called stormtroopers and the term is based on the elite sturmtroppen of WW1, developed by Imperial Germany to break the deadlock on the Western Front. The way the bucketheads stand in formation is also clearly harkening back to the Nuremburg rallies, and not how modern armies, like the marines, stand in formation. One main advantage of having separate branches of Armed Forces is that the can become specialized in whatever service(s) you need, whereas if it were all lumped into one combined armed force, it would actually be more expensive, or suffer from reduced quality overall. Separate branches also allow for easier distribution of resources depending on the urgency or severity of the need. Need general peace keeping forces just to provide a presence as safety for civilians or to keep people from considering rebelling? Send in the fresh recruits out of basic. Does the enemy have a high presence of aircraft on a battlefield and you need air superiority? Call in the Air Force. Need to conduct highly covert, time sensitive and extremely volatile operations? Send in your specialists. Need to get them there quickly with logistical services and planning? Use the navy. Each branch has purpose behind their specialized training, whereas if they were all trained the same set of skills, you would have extreme difficulty being able to adapt to a changing battlefield situation, and it would cost an alarming amount of time and resources to train all of your forces. On the flip side, if you choose to only train the basics of each service ("Jack of all trades"), you would end up with a force of an overall reduced quality than if you allowed specialization.
interestingly enough, there was a member of the Imperial Navy who also didnt think the Death Star was such a bright idea...it was one of the few, one of the VERY few, times that he and Vader actually agreed on something and found common ground...Grand Admiral Thrawn...
Stormtroopers are special forces and the only reason we saw them all the time in the movies is because the story followed high stakes events at the Empire’s most important locations being led by their top leaders like Vader and Veers. We need to see more regular Imperial Army and Navy in the future.

To be fair, I don't think the fighters and transports in Starship Troopers had those either, at least in the Roughnecks CGI cartoon. I seem to recall that the dropship pilots in Roughnecks wore the same kind of hardsuit as the infantry, just in navy blue instead of green.
Reminds me of Commissioned V Non-Commissioned officers where if you were a NCO you got the job through acts of meritocracy, and instead if you were a commissioned officer you got the job by going to a school rather than getting the job because you stood out from your peers by displaying leadership capability. Napoleon was popular & successful because he promoted people like cooks to leadership role if they displayed great capability to lead other people, in comparison Napoleon's peers such as the British officer corp was more about aristocracy.
Also Napoleon: ''I didn't learn anything on the battlefields that I didn't already know from military school''. An expression of arrogance? Yes, but also showing how important specialized education is.

I always thought the Storm Troopers were an independent arm like the US Marines though(but still overall subject to the Navy), rather than being part of the Army. The Navy's elite shock assault troops to be used for boarding actions and contested landings like on Hoth.

Did the Imperial Army have its own space forces beyond starfighters? Much like how the US Army has its own fleet of logistics and landing vessels. Did they have their own transports, supply vessels, fire support ships or were they totally dependent on the Imperial Navy?
I can attest that the rivalry between different military branches do exist even in today's society. For instance, my father (R.I.P.) was Vietnam War U.S. Army Infantry. And I, myself (veteran), was a Cold War U.S. Navy Sailor. Every year we would get together and watch the Army Vs Navy Football game. And every year it gotten real rowdy. Was it personal? No. It is what different branches do when they get together. Nothing personal but shits and giggles. Good times. Rest in peace dad. Love you.

This admiral is somewhat reprimanding an Ensign for their derogatory comment regarding the usefulness of ground pounders in the age of 1000mm orbital bombardment shells. Both (Generally) equally respect each other's roles. Also as a sidenote, Yamamoto's plan for Pearl Harbor was VERY different than how it actually played out. A. It wasn't meant as a surprise attack in the way it happened. A declaration of war was supposed to be submitted a few hours before the attack, but the usual typist was unavailable, resulting in the letter being delayed significantly. B. There was supposed to be a third wave which targeted fuel and dry docks, crippling the response. And C. The US Carriers were actually the primary targets not the battleships. However, as with the last one, the Navy had it's own inner rivalry which resulted in the admiral in charge of the attack actually prioritizing the battleships and leaving once "Surprise had worn off", leaving the Pacific fleet a very well intact base all things considered, as well as having what would become the most potent weapons of World War Two completely unharmed. Wonder if that sort of thing happened in Star Wars but kind of in reverse. Any Republic era officers who saw the benefit of a carrier, only to be undercut and unheard of by Battleship officers.
Also didn't help that the carriers weren't present when Pearl Harbor was attacked. I actually did a report about whether FDR knew Pearl Harbor was going to be attacked. Final analysis: he knew an attack was coming but not which base would be hit, therefore he couldn't give early warning.

They weren't there, but were still the intended primary targets, with the battleships being secondary. But of course the admiral in charge was a battleship primary officer, and decided that he wouldn't get a chance if he waited for the carriers to return. Which ultimately really hampered the ideal goal of the Japanese in WWII.

Nice insights into the Imperial Military :) Interservice rivalry is another thing why the Empire doesnt function. Slight correction though: Tagge and Vader weren't the only survivors of the conference scene, General Hurst Romodi reappeared in canon comic "Star Wars" 2020 again and became the Executor's Army commander after Empire Strikes back, replacing General Veers.
A good example of the IJN's closeness to the European maritime powers is the Naval Academy in Etajima. It was built from the same bricks as Britain's Naval Academy, thousands of bricks wrapped with care and imported from Britain, and the Academy itself was also designed by a British architect.

I always saw them as a "marines" force as well, or at least a close analogy in form and function, and not an Imperial Army detachment. (I suppose this could also vary by period, i.e., army in the Republic period and marines in the Empire.) Is there anything in the extended canon/lore/whatever sources which list the Stormtrooper corps as being a division of the Imperial Army?
@@GAJake The Marines are not techincally part of the Navy, we're an independent branch of service within the Department of the Navv. This means that the Commandant of the Marine Corps and the Chief of Naval Operations are on the same level as each other and both report to the Secretary of the Navy.

Despite popular belief, the Wehrmacht was not the name for the German Army during WWII, the Army was simply called the Heer and today it's the Bundsheer. What the Wehrmacht was was the name for the combined armed forces, excluding the Waffen SS, of Germany during WWII. This becomes clear when you do in depth reading into the German military operations during WWII, you'll see mentions of Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW) and Oberkommando der Heer (OKH) which were the high commands for the military as a whole and the high command for the Army itself. Often times there will be mention about competition between OKW and OKH with the OKH largely supllantinng the roll of the OKW by war's end.

This kind of reminds me of a story I recently read about how the Imperial Japanese Navy and Army during WW2 hated each other. I wonder if SW EU writers were using that as an inspiration in their writing.

It was tied in some respects to Japan's feudal samurai past. The army officer class was dominated men from the Chōshū Domain and the navy officer class from the Satsuma Domain, and the two were historical enemies.

Interservice rivalry will also make a coup, mutiny or defection a lot harder, both in fiction and real life. That charismatic captain might be able to convince his crew to defect to the rebellion but the stormtrooper stationed aboard his ship probably have other views. And that Imperial Army general may be able to convert that planet into his personal domain, but without navy support, if will become his prison.

The Attempted Assassination of Hitler in Operation Walküre had only 2 Kriegsmarine members for that reason. The Navy saw itself responsible for the surrender of WW1 and vowed to not let that happen again (fight to the last shell). This is why the Wehrmacht Members didn’t trust the navy

it’s like this in most real life countries; maybe not hatred, but a rivalry. In the UK there is a big rivalry between our two elite infantry units, Royal Marines (Navy) and Paras (Army).
It’s definitely more of a friendly rivalry, especially since the Marines and Paras tend to be deployed and fight together very often.
And it’s not uncommon to find a Para who’s actually completed the Marine commando training course and earned the green beret, or to find a marine who’s completed the Para course and earned the “wings”. Plus even other british military units in all branches can choose to complete the Marines or Para training courses.
I was always under the impression that the Royal Marines were part of the British Army.

As such, they are part of the RN, and it is not uncommon for Royal Navy ships even now to have a detachment of Marines for if they need something captured.

At the end of the day, you're not going to win a war if you can't put boots on the ground. Palpatine put all his eggs on escalating aggression with orbital bombardments and planetary-killing WMDs. But you can't hold ANYTHING if you don't have boots on the ground. Never underestimate the importance of Infantry.
That's probably why China is hesitant to do anything in regards to Taiwan for the time being, especially after seeing Russia effing it up so badly in Ukraine with their botched invasion.
The distance of water between China and Taiwan isn't very large but it might as well be given the notorious difficulty of amphibious landings and the sheer logistics involved with moving the required equipment and boots on the ground needed to hold territory (outside of reducing Taiwan to smoking embers thanks to overwhelming missile bombardment but China would be foolish to want to rule over mere ashes). China is trying to build up its naval fleet and investing in amphibious ships and vehicles as a result.

Naval Historian and UA-camr "Drachinifel" has several segments of the rivalry between the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Navy. The IJA even had it's own naval forces because the IJN had other ideas about supporting operations. Sometimes the inter-service rivalry fighting between the IJA and IJA took precedence over fighting the US.

Also, not quite to the same level, but what about the WW2 Luftwaffe and Kriegsmarine? That was a legendary rivalry, with both of them trying to suck up to Hitler to get resources - a power struggle that the Luftwaffe pretty much won after the Bismarck was sunk, and the bad-tempered painter threw a tantrum and basically all but ignored requests from the Kriegsmarine for the rest of the war. Which was ironic, as the British government viewed the Kriegsmarine's U-boat fleet as the only thing that seriously had the potential to knock Britain out of the war at the time.
I really enjoy this channel. It's helped me through rough times this year. My dad got me into Star Wars on Christmas in 1991, as soon as my mom let him show me... but now this is my 3rd Christmas alone since losing my dad in Fall 2020. Don't worry tho. I love the perspective you put on rivalry, but what about joint operations? Just like in the real world we live on with coordinated Forces elements (ie: AirForce+Army or Navy+Marines) we saw similarity in ESB during the battle of Hoth. It is Vader's fleet invading with newly appointed Admiral Piett but its ground troop lead commander was General Veers in his green army fatigues, not an admiral or a Navy superseding the Snowtroopers. Once the Shields generators were destroyed, Veers passed on command to Vader for the next military target within Echo base itself. Would be cool to see more joint ops from the Empire and how successful or unsuccessful this has been.

It's not about him using the sword in the first line, but he could personally supervise the combined operations from the ship's bridge. He couldn't do it. This was an amazing video and only proves more as to why the republics military was much more effective because all the branches knew they needed each other. It also helped the fact that the clone soldiers which made up the majority of the republics forces had a deep sense of brotherhood to each other no matter the branch given they were literally brothers through cloning. I feel that despite the imperial militaries many advancements it had no hope of defeating the rebellion because the rebel forces as the very least were all untied while the empire’s military branches were bickering amongst each other. And it ultimately would be their petty rivalries and arrogance that would destroy them. So sad that very few imperial commanders knew this and basically had to deal with it.

Hiyo! Long time fan. Just wanted to comment on a previous video, can't recall which, where it was mentioned that Imperial Stormtroopers were elite soldiers, not the army, and somewhat like the US Marines. The point being that like the marines, they needed the navy to bring them around. Reckon that's a little off. The original marine function was to protect ships from boarders during the age of sail. Small contingents on each ship; the US Navy still does this for the capital ships, mainly the carriers, these days protection against sabotage. Later, yes, the halls of Montezuma and the shores of Tripoli spoke of their close to shore activities. I reckon George Lucas saw the bucketheads as like the SS of WW2; clearly WW2 was his model in terms of dogfighting starfighters as well. The Waffen SS (the military wing of what started as Hitler's bodyguards) were also called stormtroopers and the term is based on the elite sturmtroppen of WW1, developed by Imperial Germany to break the deadlock on the Western Front. The way the bucketheads stand in formation is also clearly harkening back to the Nuremburg rallies, and not how modern armies, like the marines, stand in formation. One main advantage of having separate branches of Armed Forces is that the can become specialized in whatever service(s) you need, whereas if it were all lumped into one combined armed force, it would actually be more expensive, or suffer from reduced quality overall.
Separate branches also allow for easier distribution of resources depending on the urgency or severity of the need.
Need general peace keeping forces just to provide a presence as safety for civilians or to keep people from considering rebelling? Send in the fresh recruits out of basic. Does the enemy have a high presence of aircraft on a battlefield and you need air superiority? Call in the Air Force. Need to conduct highly covert, time sensitive and extremely volatile operations? Send in your specialists. Need to get them there quickly with logistical services and planning? Use the navy.
Each branch has purpose behind their specialized training, whereas if they were all trained the same set of skills, you would have extreme difficulty being able to adapt to a changing battlefield situation, and it would cost an alarming amount of time and resources to train all of your forces. On the flip side, if you choose to only train the basics of each service ("Jack of all trades"), you would end up with a force of an overall reduced quality than if you allowed specialization.
interestingly enough, there was a member of the Imperial Navy who also didnt think the Death Star was such a bright idea...it was one of the few, one of the VERY few, times that he and Vader actually agreed on something and found common ground...Grand Admiral Thrawn...
Stormtroopers are special forces and the only reason we saw them all the time in the movies is because the story followed high stakes events at the Empire’s most important locations being led by their top leaders like Vader and Veers. We need to see more regular Imperial Army and Navy in the future.
For special forces they sure had a hard time fighting an elderly captain Rex and wolffe and dropped like flies to untrained people

To be fair, I don't think the fighters and transports in Starship Troopers had those either, at least in the Roughnecks CGI cartoon. I seem to recall that the dropship pilots in Roughnecks wore the same kind of hardsuit as the infantry, just in navy blue instead of green.

Reminds me of Commissioned V Non-Commissioned officers where if you were a NCO you got the job through acts of meritocracy, and instead if you were a commissioned officer you got the job by going to a school rather than getting the job because you stood out from your peers by displaying leadership capability.
Napoleon was popular & successful because he promoted people like cooks to leadership role if they displayed great capability to lead other people, in comparison Napoleon's peers such as the British officer corp was more about aristocracy.

Very good! I can see that Lucasfilm got its inspiration from the Imperial Japanese Navy v Army interservice rivalry. I always thought the Storm Troopers were an independent arm like the US Marines though(but still overall subject to the Navy), rather than being part of the Army. The Navy's elite shock assault troops to be used for boarding actions and contested landings like on Hoth.

I can attest that the rivalry between different military branches do exist even in today's society. For instance, my father (R.I.P.) was Vietnam War U.S. Army Infantry. And I, myself (veteran), was a Cold War U.S. Navy Sailor. Every year we would get together and watch the Army Vs Navy Football game. And every year it gotten real rowdy. Was it personal? No. It is what different branches do when they get together. Nothing personal but shits and giggles. Good times. Rest in peace dad. Love you.

We are all cogs in a machine, grinding our foes beneath our equal boots." I wrote about a "Healthy" rivalry between a Star fleet and the Marines who actually take the land. This admiral is somewhat reprimanding an Ensign for their derogatory comment regarding the usefulness of ground pounders in the age of 1000mm orbital bombardment shells. Both (Generally) equally respect each other's roles. Also as a sidenote, Yamamoto's plan for Pearl Harbor was VERY different than how it actually played out. A. It wasn't meant as a surprise attack in the way it happened. A declaration of war was supposed to be submitted a few hours before the attack, but the usual typist was unavailable, resulting in the letter being delayed significantly. B. There was supposed to be a third wave which targeted fuel and dry docks, crippling the response. And C. The US Carriers were actually the primary targets not the battleships. However, as with the last one, the Navy had it's own inner rivalry which resulted in the admiral in charge of the attack actually prioritizing the battleships and leaving once "Surprise had worn off", leaving the Pacific fleet a very well intact base all things considered, as well as having what would become the most potent weapons of World War Two completely unharmed. Wonder if that sort of thing happened in Star Wars but kind of in reverse. Any Republic era officers who saw the benefit of a carrier, only to be undercut and unheard of by Battleship officers.
Also didn't help that the carriers weren't present when Pearl Harbor was attacked. I actually did a report about whether FDR knew Pearl Harbor was going to be attacked. Final analysis: he knew an attack was coming but not which base would be hit, therefore he couldn't give early warning.

They weren't there, but were still the intended primary targets, with the battleships being secondary. Slight correction though: Tagge and Vader weren't the only survivors of the conference scene, General Hurst Romodi reappeared in canon comic "Star Wars" 2020 again and became the Executor's Army commander after Empire Strikes back, replacing General Veers.
A good example of the IJN's closeness to the European maritime powers is the Naval Academy in Etajima. It was built from the same bricks as Britain's Naval Academy, thousands of bricks wrapped with care and imported from Britain, and the Academy itself was also designed by a British architect.
