Bob Dylan and Van Morrison - Crazy Love (Athens 1989)

  • On a summer day in 1989, Van Morrison and Bob Dylan met up in Greece and brought their acoustic guitars to the place in Athens where the ancients believed the muses lived. Philopappos Hill, traditionally known as the Hill of the Muses, rises high above the Athens Basin and has a commanding view of the Acropolis. It was June 29. Dylan had just wrapped up a European tour the night before at Panathinaiko Stadium, and Morrison was traveling with a BBC crew for an Arena documentary that would be broadcast in 1991 as One Irish Rover: Van Morrison in Performances. The two legendary singer-songwriters played several of Morrison's songs: "Foreign Window" and "One Irish Rover," above, and "Crazy Love," below. A fourth song, "And It Stoned Me," was apparently cut from the film. www.openculture.com

This is one of the finest pieces of anything on the entire internet. Aren't you glad we're able to share it with each other right now, somehow and someway? That's beautiful. That's the good part of this thing. So - love to you and yours - wherever you are.

Moondance, the album on which this song first appeared, came out in 1970. It was immediately a favorite, and I listened to it a lot, and was still listening in 1973 when I met a woman who gave me crazy love the likes of which I didn't know existed in the world. This song was part of the sound track of our long and crazy love affair, right up until her death 6 months ago. It's one of the things I listen to when I want to cry a little while remembering her. I can still hear her heart beat, and her sweet loving still makes me righteous and whole and mellow down into my soul.

Often the most beautiful jams come out of informal sessions such as these, where egos fade & the little mistakes add to the joy of it all. So what if the lyrics 'hop, skip & jump', so did my heart, with joy.

Bob was far far and far away from being a mediocre guitarists at best. I can hear her heart beat for a thousand miles
And the heaven's open every time she smiles
And when I come to her that's where I belong
Yet I'm running to her like a river's song
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She's got a fine sense of humor when I'm feeling low down
And when I come to her when the sun goes down
Take away my trouble, take away my grief
Take away my heartache, in the night like a thief
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love
She give me love, love, love, love, crazy love
Yes I need her in the daytime
Yes I need her in the night
Yes I want to throw my arms around her
Kiss her hug her kiss her hug her tight
And when I'm returning from so far away
She gives me some sweet lovin' brighten up my day
Yes it makes me righteous, yes it makes me feel whole
Yes it makes me mellow down in to my soul

I doubt any of the muses who stood on top that hill in ancient Greece had as rare a set of lungs as Van Morrison... but what do I know :)
