- Here is a 1951 Food Packet Individual Assault - a very rare Ration from the Korean War era. Check out this video and see this never before filmed in color Military Ration. And also witness the oldest chocolate chip cookie, jelly bar eaten, and cigarette ever smoked (2nd oldest actually by only 3 months to my own record).
A very rare and interesting glimpse - hope you enjoy!

I laughed so loud here lol
I was in the Army in 1959 -66. The C-rats we got in '59-61 were dated 1938. We got a full 20 cig pack, and the Lucky Strikes had the green logo which was before the red. The canned chicken was horrible but the Pork & beans were OK. The hard tack couldn't be softened in hot coffee, so putting jam on one was out of the question. The beef stew was pretty good. No utensils, you used yours from your mess kit.

that jelly bar was a wild ride
Had to grab da popcorn for that one bruh
I forgot to mention. In 1973, I went to Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, S.C. Since a few other guys and I arrived a week early, they put us to work cleaning out some old, unused for many years, barracks and some kind of storage room, about 24' x 16', in which we found box upon box of ""MRE"". I'd say there were 12 MRe's to each box. To the best of my recollection, they were at least 20+ yrs. old, so from 1952??... The Sgt. told us to take what we want and trash the rest. I had many of the jelly bars that you showed here, although they seemed brighter in color,.and they tasted similar to the ""Chuckles" jelly candy that used to be popular. Also had hundreds of packs of cigarettes that came 6 or 8 to a pack. I literally had over 100 packs, which I sold during the 1 week "bivouac" training. Guys were willing to pay a premium, as during the bivouac , we had no commissary access. Just a memory that came back after watching the first of your MRE videos...first for me, that is. Your videos are fantastic...thank you!!
Thank you for sharing your story! It was fun to read. :)
+Taylor B neat story and thanks for your service
Great story bro! Bet you were pretty badass back in the day (well all the dudes from back then coulda kicked the crap out of the pussies of today lol)!
Thanks for sharing the memory, and much more thanks for your service, sir!
65 year old cookie and your first thought is "looks good", I like your courage.

+mrKozmoz i'm surprised he didn't try and reconstitute the canned bacon and cheese.
+Anthony Puerta LOL true
Ender Skies I think at this point he's built up a super tolerance for bacteria, he could probably shoot E.coli into his veins and it wouldn't do anything
No bacteria would survive 56 years in a rusty can.
You are so soothing to me. I watch when I am stressed out for relief...
I was thinking the same thing. Soothing voice, reminds me of the guy from Lazy Game Reviews.... voice wise.
For real tho I didn't realize it till after the video but something about your clam vibe and calm voice just really relaxes the mood.
I feel ya'. I go to bed with these videos, haha.
Steve's video's are like a sweet lullaby to me. I love to study all wars and anything relating to war. I guess I am a different girl in that way. WWII and the Civil War are my favorite modern day wars to research. Watching Steve smoke a war era cigarette is so soothing to me. I always want to continue learning and these vids are a great way to do so. Good on ya Steve!
+Christian Trinidad you and me both.
Steve, your smoke sessions with the fine, aged tobacco are the greatest. It's like a Fireside Chat of your own or something, a little interlude. Keep the great videos coming, brother. Thanks for what you do!
Exactly I love those
It gets me my tobacco fix
@@xSmoKinGun lol mine too. Then I go and get a real tobacco fix, though hahaha
I don't know how I stumbled across your channel, but I have a crap load of MREs, so I've been very intrigued with your videos. I've eaten some fairly old stock, but nothing like you have consumed!
When I was a kid, my grandmother told me a story about her grandfather who fought during the Civil War for the South. He told her that his unit ran out of food and would go into smoke houses on abandoned farms, dig up the dirt floor and boil the soil, which was coated in fat and drippings from the smoked meats.
They would then skim off the fat as their meal.
They would literally scoop the fat soaked dirt off of the floor of the smoke houses, and boil it. This was verbal history shared with me by my grandmother. I wrote all of this stuff down to pass on to my son etc.
Love what you're doing brother. Fun stuff and I dig on how you respect and preserve this history. Much respect!
Thank you brother!
Great story!
That is fascinating. True grit the confederates had for survival.
I ate some old NATO rations. It tasted fine.
Menu no. 8, wood chips in dirt.
Love how me maintains eye contact while he smokes the whole cigarette. "Nice"
"this is probably the one that has the cancer causing food coloring" *eats
eh sure there is no way one of those can cause cancer
Nice.. cherry... oh wow
then proceeds to smoke a cigarette
Killer IHG read it right when he said
Steve might actually be immortal, considering some of the stuff he's put in his mouth and lived.
There is something oddly calming and intriguing about your videos. Probably the passion, the curiosity and the enjoyment you get from opening everything. They really are one of the best time capsules in the world. Love the ones of you trying out the aged smokes. You instantly get that nicotine calm look and being a smoker and watching others enjoy a good cig always makes ya want one lol love the vids.
Man, i have got to say, i was expecting the comment sections on your videos to be insane but instead they are full of amazing comments, information, people discussing things civilly, and enjoying what you do and share with us. I live in a high stress situation at the moment due to declining health, and your videos are an amazing stress reliever for me. Thanks man, for all the knowledge and vicarious adventuring, and thanks to all the commenters for being ace folks.

@@dylancan69 "let's get that on a tray" ... "NICE"
Yeah my faves are the ones he smokes in for some reason. Probably cuz tobacco has been so thoroughly vilified these days that it's almost taboo to watch a dude smoke a cig on UA-cam.
I love how stoked you get about this stuff, it makes it exciting to see what comes out of the MRE and how they have faired the test of time.
Smoking history, I don't smoke but I would absolutely smoke one of those because it connects you to that era, the war, and the guys who were there.
Same here
sounds romantic
Same
By that logic then if you get shot with a ww2 era gun it would give you same connection 😂😂😂😂

Looks like a mold spot on the cookie.
The problem isn't the big visible spot of mold, but rather the mold throughout the cookie that's not visible to the eye.
The white mold is not so bad, supposedly.
Green mold is worse, and black mold is bad.
..Or so I've heard.
As a mycologist, he should be fine, doesnt seem like mold, way to dry...
More flavor
nothing that'll kill you. Unless it's black mold. fuck that.
Bro I’m here for the cigarette reviews. Can’t get it anywhere else.
Incredible.
My Grandpa traded a combat ration candy bar to a starving kid in Germany for a pristine party leader Walther PPK pistol during WWII. Dad has the pistol, it's in great shape, we shoot it often.
Yea sure, ya tool.

It *was* canned cheese with bacon, I checked out the menu 8 info.
Live the way he says “can’t turn back now” as you can hear him swallow the jelly bar. LOL
Don't you just love how as technology advances, quality goes down?
Too many people, now.
We keep popping out babies, but our logistics lags way behind.
Things like Arabian coffee, Turkish tobacco, genuine Parmesan cheese, etc. command a massive premium that they never used to.
7.1 billion people want luxury. 7.1 billion people ain't gonna get it.
7.44 billion now..
We're a virus lol!
Lot of people that means a big war is bound to happen, lots of casualties..

Steve: .... oh yeah.
That cigarette your smoking is pure tobacco, no paper additives.
3 minutes of him smoking lmao, love it.

He typically does with any ration that comes with smokes.
Feels a bit like a wine tasting thing, almost.

It's so humbling to take a trip back to 1951 and see the products consumed by the soldiers at the time! Amazing upload!
I'm glad this guy satisfies my curiosity by eating these old MREs, but goddamn I wonder what it does to his stomach.
His stomach looks like an old war vet from countless different wars.
I also wondered if he's gotten sick off them. I've seen his newer videos and he seems more cautious, but then he turns around and surprises me every time LMFAO!
These are so interesting! I love how you show everything in good close-up so we can really inspect the items too, and you lay everything out nicely so we can keep looking at everything as you go along. Also, a huge thanks for not swearing so that my kids can watch and learn. Keep up the great work!
p.s.This is my fave of your vids so far.
Why cant i stop watching these videos!?
Shit makes me want to smoke.
same here man
+Gratex Nothing like a smoke sometimes.
Thanks to Steve I was able to find those exact cigarettes in the exact era 1965 on eBay for $18 bucks. Man oh man I smoked one today and it really, REALLY is a big difference from today's tobacco.
"sorry, I'm not eating that fossil"😂 lmao
haha haha
It's nice to see cigarettes with their original packaging, here in Europe we have massive warnings and shock pictures, and soon the packaging will all be identical with puke green color.
I never smoked (well... tried some cigarettes when I was younger) but I really liked the packagings back in the 90s and the smell of fresh tobacco inside.
+Fluff nah its true atleast in america with the flavor ban all there is is non menthol and menthol and to keep marketshare companys add more and more weird shit and make 20 diff types of menthol cigs. They all are just starting to taste awful and low quality. Damn shame.
Well yeah europe is a tyrannical shithole
10:44 "this is the one that probably has the cancer-causing red food coloring... mmm, Cherry!" I'm fucking dying
I don’t know why but I’m more interested in watching your videos of classic MRE’s reviews then videos of newer MRE’s.
I am absolutely not a tobacco user in anyway, but even I would try one of those Camels man...
Yeah man me too.

I've never enjoyed watching someone smoke a cigarette untill this guy
You lightin up these old cigarettes is so cool to see. I've always wondered about cigarettes from that era. Quality post, Steven.
"this is something money can't buy... and even if you could find it... it would cost some money"
This is honestly one awesome odd-ball channel. I absolutely love it. Thanks for sharing these experiences with us.
One of the best reviews anyone has done yet.
Great stuff Steve.
Man I don't know what it is about you Steve but I always get a homely feeling from your videos. Keep up the great work!
This guy is great. You can tell he genuinely enjoys doing these reviews which leads to great content. Excellent job Steve!!
Man, this guy is just cool as can be. Calm and collective I can watch these videos endlessly.
Damn, I wish I found you before my grandpa passed two months ago, he is Korean War vet, and I really never talked to him about rations. 7th cav 3rd battalion was his unit if you cared to know.
I can see the conversation now.........
"Would you like a smoke?"
"No thanks. I only enjoy smokes 65 years and older."
Man I've been binge watching your videos lol. I don't know why but its super fascinating and satisfying to see you not only open and give extensive history on these rations, but try the food as well. Keep up the cool videos man!
You have the best channel! I had been watching your stuff all week! Great content and very interesting to see the history!
You're freaking insane Steve, but i love the content, you do what i'd never dare!

+Steve1989 MREinfo Now THAT would be quite a video!
+felixthemaster1 Lol that made me laugh too. Thank God he did not try it!
With all the videos you have in convinced you actually live off the rations XD
Lol Thanks for the laugh
Can't believe the condition of those jellies, astounding. :o
I have absolutely no idea why I love watching these, but I do. Just can't stop watching these.
Did you remember to light the end of the camel w/the logo on it? I was told by vets from WWII, Korea & Vietnam that they were told to light them that way so if the enemy discovered the butts lying on the ground they couldnt tell what side had been there
You're a brave man. Thanks for the video
+Steve1989 MREinfo I do enjoy all of them.
I think it's a mixture of Steve's soothing voice, his obvious knowledge, reverence and enthusiasm for
his subject. His "Lets get this out on a tray, NICE," (which, imao, should be a ration--al catchphrase).
Finally, that time-capsule feeling of better days...A potent mix.
Keep 'em coming.
Like opening a time capsule, I think that’s what makes these so addicting
i was getting worried you had food poisoning or something
dude you said it was can cheese with bacon at the beginning and forgot after opening it
Nonsmoker.. watches Steve smoke..
Becomes smoker..
Watching your videos on Christmas haha. Merry Christmas man!
Seeing how well you review cigarettes makes me want to see you review some old cigars. I'm sure it'd be expensive but fun! Plus you seem to have the right palette for it, seeing how well you described the smooth turkish tobacco taste.
+Steve1989 MREinfo Now THAT would be a treat! Great video as always man, keep it up!
"Let's get this out on a tray"
"Nice"
Gets me every time lol
Not really into military rations, but I subbed because this guy is so chill.
That's probably the best cigarette commercial I've ever seen, you're making me itch over here.
Nice review. You can understand why people smoked a lot in those days. The cigarettes were good!
"Umm uhh oh that one was weird. Well can't turn back now."
I can't figure it out what it is about Steve's intros and music....something about the quick jump cuts and the oddly sped up music he makes looks and sounds like a 1980's Nintendo military game. I friggin' love it!
man the typography and design of written elements on every little packet & can is very nice
That Camel looked like mint. I can only imagine how great that cigarette tasted.
The bluish green spot is mold.
I love that I can both watch these and have a great time and use them as ASMR to sleep to. You’re a wizard of the Soluble Coffee and old Cigs
Anyone else like falling asleep to his videos? These are so relaxing.
Camels were smoother than Chesterfields. My grandpa smoked Chesterfields and drank Jack Daniels, he was a John Wayne type.
back then I don't think the tobacco companies put all those shitty chemicals in their products like they do now.
+Wickedashtray right man. they should go back to that.
+Wickedashtray Actually they started to put the chemical additives in the 20s.
interesting. do you have a link that explains that?
oxidizer for smoother burn.
Eats something older than his own parent's and the first thing he says after is "that was really good i wish i had another one of those"...oki doki.
His voice is calming and nice. what a genuine guy.
There are three things I can count on with your videos, and I've seen a lot of them. 1: After you get the items out on to a tray you always say "Nice!" 2: You will talk with your mouth full and always apologize for it. and 3: You give the best descriptions of what you smell and taste, leaving us viewers with a great way to try and understand it. Love the videos man!
My god. This is amazing.
LIke a weird little trophy of sorts for me... *stares at camera for an awkwardly long time*
he was taking a deep breath, probably feeling really good from the smoke.
This ration was manufactured when I was barely a month old. Great job making the best of it Steve!
