Viceroy's are still sold in the US but are generally more popular in Europe, particularly in Eastern Europe, and Asia. Viceroy was the first cork tipped smoke, introduced in 1936, and the first cellulose acetate filter, brought out in 1961. The cork tip was supposed ot appeal to women so they didn't get tobacco leaves stuck between their teeth. It apparently worked since Viceroy was the most popular cork tipped cigarette by 1940. The cellulose acetate filter did even better since the filter color was white compared to the cork filter, which was generally brown. It was so poplar with women that Brown & Williamson, the makers of Viceroy, felt they were losing too much market share to women. In 1960, about 75% of all cigarettes were sold to men, so having a cigarette that appealed too much to women was felt to be eating into sales to men. In the 60's Viceroy was a sponsor for several different auto racing teams. They even partnered with Tag-Heuer, a popular brand of watch used in Formula 1 and sports car racing teams. Unfortunately for Tag, Viceroy convinced them to come out with a relatively inexpensive version of one of their racing watches. Tag was a competitor with Rolex when this happened in the early 70's, and Tag took several decades to regain its reputation as a super accurate racing watch,
It was a commonly sold brand from the 30's up until the 90's. It has been described as a Lucky with a filter. I smoked them on and for a couple decades. B&W was involved in long running litigation with the FTC and the other "Big Five" tobacco companies. One result was a an agreement with British American Tobacco (BAT) for B&W to sell off their low priced brands to a small subsidiary company, Commonwealth Tobacco, LLC. Since they weren't part of the "Big Five" tobacco companies, they weren't subject to antitrust rulings against the major brands. Commonwealth became the most profitable tobacco companies in the US. B&W's Vice President of Research & Development, Jeffrey Wigand, eventually became involved in a battle over tobacco additives used to enhance "throat hit" and also to increase the effectiveness of nicotine delivery. The brand used to test the results of the research was Viceroy. The president of B&W wanted to use these additives, even though his own chief scientist warned of the cancer risk of these high delivery additives. Wigand was, in effect, fired, but allowed to retire and keep all his company benefits in exchange for his promise not reveal the results of his research at B&W. After a year long battle with B&W, including death threats on his children and having a full time bodyguard, Wigand's unedited interview with "60 Minutes" finally aired on February 4, 1996. The interview and his documentation of B&W's using additives to increase the effectiveness of nicotine's addictive properties became the literal "smoking gun" for the tobacco industry. Things for the tobacco industry would never be the same again.
As I remember Viceroy and Parliament were relatively mild cigarettes. A lot of people started with them. Cigarettes anyone could smoke. Probably why they were included in the MRE
Let me make a few corrections on your Viceroy and corked or filtered cigarettes. First of all, Viceroy was far from the first Cork tipped cigarette produced. Though they claimed to be they weren't. As far back as 1911 cigarette manufacturer of Egyptienne Luxury and London Life in 1914...following by Craven A in 1926...Corked cigarettes were a marketing strategy for women so Viceroy would have been 25 years after the first corked cigarettes were produced. My family's brand (Reynolds tobacco) in fact produced the very first fiber filter tipped cigarette in 1954 with it production of Winston and Salem cigarettes. So Viceroy's weren't even close to being the first cork filtered cigarette. Reynold's tobacco's claims in 2011 that Viceroy's introduced the first cork filters were incorrect. Though they may have meant the first introduced here in America they didn't do enough research to back their claims. I'm not sure which website you went to for your information but it would be wrong in it's claims. Family or not Reynolds should fix this misinformation to the public.
Steve I worked in a small delicatessen when i was a teenager in the 70s and we sold Viceroy cigarettes. They were more popular with older folks like Pall Malls and Parliament cigs. Young folks smoked Marlboros and Kools. I used to be able to spot what a cigarette a customer wanted just by looking at them. A pack of smokes then was .60 cents. Customers swore if a pack went over a dollar they would quit smoking.
@@SuperTelecom lung cancer treatment isnt cheap, you want medicare to treat your smoking related illnesses? if yes, pay the taxes to fund said treatment if no, move to the USA, then an insurance company can decide if you live or die
Have you ever thought about keeping your own supply of dried milk to use in case (as usual), the stuff supplied in the meal has turned? I know it's not exactly within the spirit of what you do, but it would allow you to eat some things as intended at least.
im very happy im able to support you on patreon at this point, these videos are entertaining and all, but i feel it goes a bit without thought how much work and dedication you actually put into finding these rations and showcasing them to all of us. It's almost inspiring, you're a good dude, wishing you all the best
That 'Military Spread' (05:45) sounds like the stuff my late father told me about. He was called up in 1946, just missing the war. He said they had a butter substitute that was only just palatable, and they called it 'Garry grease'. After he left the army, in the mid 1950's, he never ate substitute butter, or margarine again. This is a fascinating channel. Thanks for showing us this stuff.
*THIS COST $700 DOLLARS* !!?!???!!!?!! holy shit Steve, makes me appreciate you and what you do just that much more, thank you man and the other day I went through your catalog of videos and realized I had already seen them all! lol it was a bummer for sure but oh well this new long one gives us our fix! lol NICE
Even if only 1% of his subscribers pledged $1 a month, that’s nearly five grand to give us watchers the joy of seeing Steve produce videos eating stuff like this.
My dad brought some of the stuff home in the 60s because he was a supply sergeant so had access to it. The beef stew one was really really good. The bread was kind of disgusting unless you sliced it and toasted it and then it was really good. I never thought I would see any of this stuff again this is amazing thank you.
*tastes jelly* "Ew, is that rancid?" *takes another taste* "Yeah, that's like fermented, well maybe one more bite..." Also why is freeze dried spaghetti not in every grocery store? Seems like a perfect idea.
Pat Patrix I'm not sure but it seems like mountain house is cornering the market on freeze dried foods. the only alternative is buying a freeze dryer for around $2k
Steve, if bread smells fruity (and it's not fruit bread), that's a very strong sign that there's mold even if it's not visible. The mold spores are everywhere even if not visible.
oatznsquats I think the last can of bread he ate smelled kinda fruity and was perfectly fine, so unless he posts a video that says he got some terrible disease, I'm going to take your advice with a grain of salt.
Steve, have you ever or would you ever do a Q&A video? I'm sure I'm not the only person who'd be interested to learn a bit about you, like how you got interested in MREs and whatnot, and to hear you talk about some of your best and worst MRE experiences.
Coffee, instant. Now when I hear this, it makes me laugh. After I saw you pull out that kenworth Butler razor I went straight to Ebay to see if I could find one, with no luck. But that's what I love about this channel. We get to see what most would have never witnessed in ones lifetime. I thank you for all the time and effort you put into your videos. Your enthusiasm and energy really make these video so wonderful to watch. Cheers keep it up!
I would love to see Steve at a restraunt lol excuse me waiter do you have any older meats? Waiter I’ll go check for you, we’ve found an old brisket of beef under the ovens that expired in 1964, Steve I’ll take it! Nice
Hey, sir. I assume you are busy and famous these days, but I wanted to thank you and share a story. My first son was born last year around this time and I had just discovered your videos. It was a dramatic delivery (everyone is awesome now), and I was infinitely stressed. For the first few weeks, I relieved my wife for the night shift and kept the little human sleeping on me in another room until the quiet wee hours of the morning. I had to stay awake, but had to do something soothing for both the boy and me. We watched every video you had made up until that point. The only risk was letting the laughter shaking through me wake him up. Your stuff was a big help getting through that time in good humor. I would not be surprised if the little dude's first word is "nice." p.s. I have some 2013 US MREs in my go bag. I will save them for a few decades before I ship them your way.
Steve's amazing!!! I've tried less than 10 yr old dehydrated survival food that had a hint of rancidity and I couldn't eat more than a spoon full. I'm just amazed that this 56 yr old spaghetti is edible.
Love how descriptive you are. I quit smoking 6 months ago but every time you describe the cigs in the rations it makes me want one so bad. Triggered. Would definitely hunt for a ration just to understand the experience you had with the Camels in your 1954 Korean War ration.
The hit you get from cigarettes isn’t just nicotine, they also give you a dose of MAOIs which are the strongest anti-depressant type. Easily googleable if you want to check. MAOI and cigarette will do it. Your videos are incredible and easy to watch, easier than most broadcast TV, thanks for everything you do.
Tobacco smoke contains Harman - which is a b-Carboline closely related chemically to harmine/harmaline. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmine#Effects_on_bone_and_cartilage It's not that great an antidepressant and has some rather nasty negative effects.
Is it weird to feel nostalgic about something you've never experienced? Something about Vietnam era rations feel so familiar. Same with the smell of tarp tents.
When I was like 5 years old, (born in 1980) we had this giant 6 man canvas army tent we would set up in the yard in the summer time and sleep outside. The smell of that tent is burned into my mind forever. Whether or not the smell is actually "good" is not not up for debate in my mind, the memories it bring makes it overwhelmingly positive :) Nice comment Koko
all these rations, even current MREs have this very unique smell. Its like a plastic...military surplus smell. I was in the military and this is what those individual first aid kits smell like at maximum level for some reason. The sunscreen in those things smells "nostalgic" too. I would use the sunscreen just to have an excuse to smell it lol.
yup but in the Air Force we had diesel heater no smell but hard to regulate the heat, heat setting 1 was about right dang thing went to 10 when we first light ours up we set at 5 like it said to do and dang if it didn't feel like sauna in the tent when we got back from setting the metal grates temp landing strip all day at 28 degrees out and with the USAF mummy bags holy crap it was hot so the next night we set it at setting 1 which was just right it was like an old potbelly stove and good to cook on, only thing I hated was the shower tents fring cold lol BUT yes the smell of the old tent that canvas circus smell and Movie night with the smell of roasted peanuts and pop-corn aww the memories lol the Army guys use to sneak over just to get cups of coffee, hot chocolate, caned beer and roasted pea-nuts and pop corn watch a movie then snake back out lol
I never played Metroid, BUT I did play a loooot of Super Smash Bros. and then Super Smash Bros. Melee. Damn that brings back some great memories, nice!
Steve is the most happy when he gets a pack of smokes. As a former smoker, I can understand the sense of joy getting a pack of those would have been for the soldiers.
Gah, i remember viceroys. Not the ‘61 viceroys, the ‘88 viceroys, when they were an el cheapo brand. The first one tasted just fine, but from then on it just went from bad to terrible. Y’know, when Roy vets the vice… Viceroy 🤷🏻♂️
A few days ago Lazy Game Reviews opened a sealed bag with computer parts in it and said "Nice Hiss" it was great. It was the video on the Creative DXR2 DVD-ROM drive.
Steve has what I call a Prozac voice. Reminds me of our old Army medic. If I were to get shot and he was talking to me, I would be completely fine with it.
I love this guy’s commentaries, makes me laugh every time. It’s like he doesn’t understand how funny he is, i literally laughed it loud 10+ time throughout this video.
TRIVIA: VICEROY CIGARETTES: yes they still make them but they have fallen into the obscure generic category now, not easily found. Even in their hey-day not many people smoked them. Their TV commercials always boasted of the free "coupon" on the back of the pack. The coupons could be traded in for items offered in a catalog. Also....this was the brand cigarette that D. B. Cooper was smoking during the famous 1971 hijacking.
So practically nothing was edible...but he ate practically everything. Thats our Steve. Btw, if you were wondering about the Viceroys, here is some info from the wiki Viceroy is a low-cost cigarette brand owned by London-based British American Tobacco. Viceroy cigarettes are made by Brown & Williamson (B&W), an American tobacco company which was bought by British American Tobacco (BAT) in 1927. Viceroys were first produced in 1936; the first filter cigarettes with a cork tip.[1]
I really love these videos! The thing I love most is the comments. Most comments nowadays are negative to downright mean, not on Steve's videos! Keep up the good work Steve!
I recognized those cups immediately. My grandfather lived in a VA hospital in the late 70’s, they had those exact cups. I always remembered those cups, filterless Pall Mall’s, and so much smoke in the hospital, the walls and ceilings were amber.
"That's Black Mold!" Oh, you mean chocolate moss? Seriously though, since the fungus would have grown in a low oxygen environment with an ample supply of carbohydrates from the starch I wonder if it had produced much mycotoxin at all. I would never recommend eating that loaf (Even the parts that look fine will more or less be riddled with hyphae.) but just smelling it should be no problem at all, unless you're allergic or suffer from asthma. Black Mold is a lot less super deadly and a lot more insidiously sensitizing than most people think.
700 dollars...eeep! Steve1989, have you ever considered doing shows where you interview ppl that worked in the factories making the meals??? Would be some interesting stories I bet, or even interviews with the companies still around today. If you havent done it already, a show where you build the ultimate MRE from your fav of each part, main course, drink, dessert, etc. would be cool. Thanks for the work on the channel, aside from the historical info, its a very relaxing channel to watch/listen to as well...nice!

We got em in canada and now they are some of the worst and harshest cigarettes i ever smoked
Coconut bar "Oh it smells terrible! Yea its not edible" .... "lets take a little bite" haha classic Steve! Love it
Yeah, he's funny that way!!! LoIIIIIIIII
Then “little bite” always ends up with him eating like half a bar and alternating between “that’s not bad” and “why am I eating this?”
I never sit down and watch videos 30+ minutes but for Steve you best believe I am !
Thanks so much for that MrHex11!
Steve I worked in a small delicatessen when i was a teenager in the 70s and we sold Viceroy
cigarettes.
And how much are they now in 2019?
Here in Poland about 4/5$
WILLRACE4FOOD depends where your at, In Minnesota in the states a pack is almost 9/10$ for some brands
I'm only 40 and smoke Pall Malls, now I feel old*er*
Now in Australia due to us apparently liking being taxed into oblivion, a decent pack of 25 cigarettes is now at least $30AU (about $22USD).
@@SuperTelecom lung cancer treatment isnt cheap, you want medicare to treat your smoking related illnesses?
if yes, pay the taxes to fund said treatment
if no, move to the USA, then an insurance company can decide if you live or die
"why am i eating this?" that should be the name of your memoirs
Furvivor I read that exactly when he said it.
“Im not eating that. Well maybe just one more bite.” Hahahahaha that made me laugh so hard. About the jam
Nah that should be the name of the tv show he gets on TLC “welcome to why am I eating this with Steve”
The paper cups with the fold out handles remind me of the cups we used to get
when you got coffee from a vending machine.
"Oh, that's like, burning my throat, is that fermented?" *TAKES 4 MORE SPOONFULS*
I'd love to see Steve after a few packets of boozejelly.
better gag reflex control than a pro hooker
*Steve's Logic*
Spaalone Babuguuscooties That part made me LOL! 😂
Am i the only one who feels satisfaction when ever Steve speeds up a can opening
A cold evening outside and I'm relaxing on the couch with a new MRE video that includes smokes? That's pretty...
NICE!
Now that is a perfect combination! Not bad
Alright, cool!
My dad brought some of the stuff home in the 60s because he was a supply sergeant so had access to it. The beef stew one was really really good. The bread was kind of disgusting unless you sliced it and toasted it and then it was really good. I never thought I would see any of this stuff again this is amazing thank you.
“Can’t say no to some 56 year old spaghetti” 😂😂😂
😅😅😅😅😅😅😆
That toilet paper, I'm not going to test it on camera.
Thanks bud 👍🏻
*tastes jelly*
"Ew, is that rancid?"
*takes another taste*
"Yeah, that's like fermented, well maybe one more bite..."
Also why is freeze dried spaghetti not in every grocery store? Seems like a perfect idea.
Pat Patrix I'm not sure but it seems like mountain house is cornering the market on freeze dried foods. the only alternative is buying a freeze dryer for around $2k
We have that stuff in german supermarkets. Be glad you don't... 😉
Steve, if bread smells fruity (and it's not fruit bread), that's a very strong sign that there's mold even if it's not visible. The mold spores are everywhere even if not visible.
Oh wow I never knew this
oatznsquats
I think the last can of bread he ate smelled kinda fruity and was perfectly fine, so unless he posts a video that says he got some terrible disease, I'm going to take your advice with a grain of salt.
oatznsquats
Nevermind, the bread does have black mold on it.
oatznsquats yummy
Sgt. Eclair just because one guy doesnt get sick doesnt mean you wont either. some food for thought. add as much salt as you want.
Steve, have you ever or would you ever do a Q&A video? I'm sure I'm not the only person who'd be interested to learn a bit about you, like how you got interested in MREs and whatnot, and to hear you talk about some of your best and worst MRE experiences.
selanfene I believesteve said one time he had his first mre as a kid
selanfene would love him to do a live QnA so many questions that need answered lol
Reddit AMA would be awesome as well
GO to his patron. 5 bucks gets you alot.
slanfinne yes a live stream !!!

I would not be surprised if the little dude's first word is "nice."
p.s. I have some 2013 US MREs in my go bag. I will save them for a few decades before I ship them your way.
50+ year old freeze dried spaghetti - “that looks just fine...”.
Me : Left my leftovers on counter for 30 mins - throws away leftovers.
Dude! All your vids are amazing but this one straight up belongs in the Hall of Fame. So many exceptional moments.
lol Steve is chowin down on some 56-year-old Spaghetti, and most of us complain about food that's been in the fridge for three days lol.
Gus Davis *Well if you think about it, food that's been in the fridge for 3 days is no where near as appealing as a freeze dried spaghetti 🍝*
Furby Gender Fair enough, but it's still kinda funny.
Yeah. Sometimes I wonder if putting opened stuff in my fridge doesn't somehow make it worse.
you said it Gus!!! He must have a digestive tract made of stainless steel!!! Lol
To be fair his spaghetti is freeze-dried lol.
I'm not eating that **takes bite**
Squabble sounds like me lol
klette 95 lol
I was thinking the same thing
"Ugh, that is NOT edible... okay, I'll take a bite."
It's like Bob Ross meets Antiques Roadshow meets Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern.
it's Steve you know!
Squidward: OH MY GOD THEY HAVE IT! CANNED BREAD!

Every time I hear anything about canned bread I think of Squidward lol
These rations are GREAT!!!
This guy has the most calming voice on UA-cam
"Can't say no to some 56 year old spaghetti"
This goes into my quote collection book.
Amalgamar Just the way momma used to make it.
Steve's amazing!!! I've tried less than 10 yr old dehydrated survival food that had a hint of rancidity and I couldn't eat more than a spoon full. I'm just amazed that this 56 yr old spaghetti is edible.
Crazy to think that the cows in the meat sauce have been dead for like 60 years
i bet those were grass fed cows
Love how descriptive you are. I quit smoking 6 months ago but every time you describe the cigs in the rations it makes me want one so bad. Triggered. Would definitely hunt for a ration just to understand the experience you had with the Camels in your 1954 Korean War ration.
You should start up again. Smoking is a really fun hobby.
Steve, two year anniversary on UA-cam coming up! Congrats for your success!
Hey Goose! Yessir - November 27th. It has been an amazing 2 years. Thanks so much for being part of it man. Always great to see ya around.
Wow...TIL
Yep he isn't shittin you either. I guess that's why so many soldiers liked smoking cigarettes.
Michael Bennett don’t forget co2 from combustion. The lightheaded feeling.
Is it weird to feel nostalgic about something you've never experienced? Something about Vietnam era rations feel so familiar. Same with the smell of tarp tents.
Friendly Metroid : Dang I still remember the smell of those tents. We used them during Reforger. Nearly froze my butt off, too!
Steve, you should have mixed the butterscotch powder with some hot milk since the dried milk was no good.
A few days ago Lazy Game Reviews opened a sealed bag with computer parts in it and said "Nice Hiss" it was great. It was the video on the Creative DXR2 DVD-ROM drive.
stonent I saw that and laufhed
Steve has what I call a Prozac voice. Reminds me of our old Army medic. If I were to get shot and he was talking to me, I would be completely fine with it.
The military should be watching every one of your videos.
Did you eat the rest of the spaghetti?
Ate it over the course of the following 2 days
That actually looked really good
Steve1989MREInfo Was that really black mold on the bread, or where the tin decayed at its seam?
Bread is highly susceptible to mold. So, it's likely black mold. No need to take chances with that either.
Nice
“That does not seem edible”
*eats it*
Steve's channel in a nutshell.
Should be a t shirt he should sell
Steve "Is that the oldest meat I have eaten?"
When you have to answer that question you are definitely leading an AWESOME life.
after he said strange life i laughed so hard!
Paper handles on paper coffee cups really takes me back : )

I love this guy’s commentaries, makes me laugh every time. It’s like he doesn’t understand how funny he is, i literally laughed it loud 10+ time throughout this video.
There is something about your videos that I can't explain but they are just awesome.
I thought D.B. Cooper was smoking Raleighs?

Also did you know running was actually invented by Sir Hardvig Hanford III in 1323 when he tried to walk at three times his normal speed

imagine eating a chicken older than you are
Just think, the farmer that raised it has been dead a long time.....
@@ARaven-xf2lg not necessarily, they would be around 85-93 years old.
Mmm... chicken preserves
If the chicken is older than you... it's fish.
So practically nothing was edible...but he ate practically everything.
Thats our Steve.
Btw, if you were wondering about the Viceroys, here is some info from the wiki
Viceroy is a low-cost cigarette brand owned by London-based British American Tobacco.
Idk why but seeing the joy that 50 year old food brings this guy really kinda makes me happy
Yeah same, his happiness and excitement are contagious!
I recognized those cups immediately. My grandfather lived in a VA hospital in the late 70’s, they had those exact cups. I always remembered those cups, filterless Pall Mall’s, and so much smoke in the hospital, the walls and ceilings were amber.
"It's burning my throat...is it fermented?" Proceeds to take *TWO* more spoonfuls!
"need to try that one more time just to be sure"
"That's Black Mold!"
Oh, you mean chocolate moss?
Seriously though, since the fungus would have grown in a low oxygen environment with an ample supply of carbohydrates from the starch I wonder if it had produced much mycotoxin at all. I would never recommend eating that loaf (Even the parts that look fine will more or less be riddled with hyphae.) but just smelling it should be no problem at all, unless you're allergic or suffer from asthma. Black Mold is a lot less super deadly and a lot more insidiously sensitizing than most people think.
Being on bread i doubt its the bad black molds not all dark mold are dangerous only mycotoxins which dont have to be dark they are light also
700 dollars...eeep!
