Great video. Thanks for making it. Maybe I can add some info to this. I'm 73 years young. My dad worked at Mt. Rainer Ordinance Depot in Tacoma, WA during the 50s. The pilot survival kits came from the Charm factory in 5 gallon tins, just a larger version of this tin. At MROD and other instillations they were repacked. The round cylinder that you mentioned was a repack, as well as square and rectangular shaped steel containers. Some were over 40 gallons in size. I hope that this helps. Please keep up the good work.
Cos it's been sitting in plastic wrapper for decades. Plastic is made from oils. Shouldn't be putting that anywhere near your mouth after so many years.the oils from the wrapper is pretty much infused with the candy.
I always notice that expired canola oil smells like house paint. I figure its something to do with old oils turn into more of a paint-like or industrial-like oil scent.
and i also sould have said that them things are so old that you dont really know whats in it. could be stuff that later tbey found was harmful. kinda like back then everything was espestice
I don't think he does it for views, I believe he enjoys it for whatever reason. I agree though, this cat could make doing laundry seem interesting even.
+Jason Blasl +CarnalKid yeah, I believe he does it to get the full experience of what the soldiers went through. He mentioned that in a Canadian ration vid
Thank you for including the Korean War it's often forgotten. As a historian specifically going into the Korean War era this was an exquisite look into the time period and what they might eat! I love this! 😍
As you're eating the Malted Milk ration... My Wife: Wait, is he eating a third candy?!? Why would he do that?!? My daughter: Cause that's what Steve does, silly! I haven't laughed that hard in weeks!
You would appreciate that I had my ww2 reenactment group trying this same ration last year. We came to the same conclusion. I personally loved the real fruit flavor of the charms.
When I was a kid Charms was a huge candy company, these remind me of packets of hard candy and their famous sour balls. My brothers and loved those, thsnks fir the fond memories.
+cryptomnesiac yeah, i hope he doesnt feel pushed to eat this stuff. im pretty sure if he ever thinks it actually is dangerous he doesnt do it, and im glad he has limits.
love your reviews brother coming from an amateur historian it shows you a time capsule to what it was like back in the old days and it's kind of weird but cool at the same time the stuff still exist and was not discarded.
Your videos are hypnotically interesting, I've been binge-watching them for the past hour. Have you ever had any food poison or bad stomach problems after eating an old food product like this?
In 2081 when someone reviews a 65 year old MRE from 2016, either the chemicals and preservatives will keep it in very good condition....or maybe the chemicals will degrade and cause some weird exo thermic reaction where wheat snack bread will burst into flames upon opening and will create an unchecked nuclear chain reaction when combined with meat in bbq sauce? Just a thought LOL. It's late-don't judge. And you've got such cojones trying to eat some of these antique foods. Not just trying them, but enthusiastically wanting to try them. You really are unique my friend. Stay well.
The way u speak, and even the little (uhh, well ya know) thing u say remind me so much of my grand father!!! We just recently found out my grand father has cancer and this sounds horrible, but if anything happened to him, ur videos would give me a since if hearing g his voice again!!!! U are AWESOME! 💓
Hey Brittany, sending good vibes your way to you and your grandfather. I wish him the best and hope he will win the battle with cancer. Thank you for the kind words, but I am hoping he will be around much longer so you don't have to rely on these videos and my voice to remind you of his. Take care & see ya around!
Steve1989MREInfo thanks so much. But I also enjoy the videos besides that as well. These videos are so relaxing lol. But thanks for the kind words and good vibes! Can't wait to see what new videos are coming up 😀...
This reminds me of being in the Navy. Our Deck Division would PM all of the life rafts and water survival gear. When anything was past its expiration date they would just throw it away and order new supplies. Back then I did not think about collecting those items, I still kick myself for that. Another great video, thank you Sir.
6:27 - 6:47 is why I watch this channel. Those reactions are the BEST. Curiosity, disgust, surprise, intrigue, more disgust, then finally self loathing and with no words in 20 seconds. Classic Steve.
Hey Steve, my dad fought in Alaska in WWII and he said that his ration kit contained a packet of coffee about the size of a regular instant coffee packet. However, it was super concentrated and was meant to last a week. He said, that you would dip a toothpick into it and then put it into hot water and that would make one cup of coffee. He thought it was meant for one up and he poured the whole packet into the cup and got the shock of his life. Are you familiar with this?
+Steve1989 MREinfo did you see the link I posted, looks to me this is the canister you were looking for. www.liveauctioneers.com/item/33348658_military-waterproof-ration-canister-and-rations
This Steve guy is pretty handsome and has a pleasant voice and a nice build. I enjoy learning about MREs also but he makes it better than watching other channels review rations.
Pappy had a box in the trunk of his black hawk. We got stuck on old 15 east of findlay.ohio. snow plows called in for the night. Sea rats. And wool blankets were the the thing. Always nice to have those small kits. 64 year old memory's.
I'm genuinely surprised at what good condition the can was in after all that time. As always, great review mate... I've got some interesting things coming up too in the next few weeks.. :) Stay tuned.
I just bought one of these off of eBay because I watched this video. It's also in almost perfect shape. I can't wait to open 'er up and taste those Charms and the malted milk tablets. I can't promise that I'll eat as many as the lipid tablets as you did, but wish me luck! Love your videos.
This is amazing. I can't get over there is a video of eating old army field rations. But I enjoy watching it. You make me want to go out and find some of these at an army surplus store and go to town. BTW you do a great job at describing the smell and flavors.
I am really enjoying these videos. I just started watching and I can tell you now that I will be following this channel for a long time. Great content. No immaturity. Good language. Good describing of tastes. I will now watch your other videos. Thanks for uploading!
