This takes me back to 1975 when my wife and I bought 10 cases of C-rations. At $1 a case we couldn't go wrong. My wife was pregnant so she got all the canned fruit. I got all the unfiltered and menthol cigarettes. The Turkey and noodles, Chicken with noodles, and tuna with noodles all tasted and looked the same. The beef and gravy had a layer of fat on top about 1/4-inch thick. There was a beef with noodles that we would mix with the beef and noodles for dinner. I got the beans and weiners, beans with meatballs, and spaghetti with meatballs for lunch. There were some chocolate covered cookies that tasted pretty good. There were some that tasted like soap. There was also pound cake, fruitcake, and orange cake. Whenever we were playing wargames we were issued C-rations. I'd collect the fruitcake from the guys that didn't like them. I'd take them home and go to work. A piece of cheesecloth soaked with about an ounce of liquor, put it in a tin, then in the fridge for 6 weeks. That made them highly edible. Thanks for bringing back some good memories.

well I think the last time I was eating one was in 1972. till this day I still believe the best cup of coffee I ever had was in the army.you see it was the first piece of food in four days. hot black coffee no sugar no cream and in that tin cup. once in awhile I still do have my coffee that way, memories, you don't know what food is until you go hungry for a few days. thks for the trip back. I was in Vietnam in 1966-1967.We were in Long Binh did no see too many C rats but we found another use for the peanut butter, mixed with insect repellant made a good long burning fuel then we could heat up the noodles which were not too bad.Another ration that I liked was the ham and eggs take them out of the can slice, heat up used a little tabsco sauce not too bad.

I had a stroke about seven years ago and lost my memory function from about junior high on. I know that I was in the Corps and served in Nam because it's on my DD214. But there's only a few memories that are still there. Now that I've seen your vids I have a clear picture of sitting on a sandbag and eating. I also remember coming back from ops and getting disarmed at the wire and receiving a bottle of Chevas Regal. Still don't remember any of the four times I got shot. That's good.

There are so many different methods that work to bring back some of what you lost :) I would suggest doing some digging online to see if you could find something that you might want to try. Hope you're doing ok and thank you for keeping us safe!

This brings back memories of 1969 and the 3rd Marine Division. I was a Hospital Corpsman with Mike 3/9. My C-ration was a little different but they still had those delicious chocolate coconut bars in them. Man were they good! Believe it, or not . . . that poster of Okinawa behind you was where I went after Richard Nixon pulled the 3rdMarDiv out of 'Nam about August of that same year. I was stationed at Camp Scwaab and later at Camp Hanson. Great place! I met a real nice Japanese girl there with whom I became good friends, although sometimes I think she hung out with me just to practice her English. I hear the Japanese want the U.S. troops off their island now. Things change, I guess. Anyway thanks for the walk down memory lane!

The "coffee" tasted a lot like pure chicory.
The single most important thing in those boxes was the Toilet Paper.
The entree cans were "cooked" (heated) by making a stove of an old small can.
Holes were punched along the bottom from the side with a "can opener" and then holes punched upward on the open end for tines to hole the can that was being heated.
One -third of a Troxene, or Hexene tablet was used to heat the food.
When not available, a CC of C-4 was used and the food constantly stirred to prevent charing.
(A CC of C-4 could boil a B-3 can of water in less than ten seconds.)
C-4 was not authorized, as Command assumes that GIs were breaking open Claymores for the C-4.
But on two occasions, my seven man squad was sent out with a 111 APC and 500 kilos of C-4 to blow stuff up, and we were told not to bring any of it back. They did not want to load a partially opened case into a Chinook for a return trip to the firebase.

In 1968 Boy Scout 48hr survival training we each got one meal of C rations and than had to fish or trap along with forage to get by for 48 hrs. We had to turn in the little 4 cigarette packs but could use the rest. I remember I got the Lima Beans. Our troop was sponsored by the U.S. Army. We were all Army brats and lived on post and got lots of military training and equipment.

Also a few times on weekend drills in the reserves (we were mechanized, training in the desert). Never ate anything but the crackers, and the pound cake. Smoked the Pall Malls. All we ever got was ham and lima beans in grease with no heaters. You can go 7 days without food, except for crakes, pound cake, and Pall Malls.
