Stock engine in the 1. gen NA in Germany was the B6 ZE with a better balanced flywheel . Mazda stated 115 HP but in fact it was a little bit more because it was going 196 kph. Guess it is the same with the ND, have one, my is going like hell. Had to upgrade the front brakes to 4 pots . And I have kicked out that stupid sound tube ...
Extra thing about the MX-5: It's actually mid engine and not front engine because they put the engine a little bit behind the front axle making it mid engine!
The 1.6 NA engine is derived from the 4wd 323 rally car, meaning it was developed as a forced induction application. I had the pleasure of owning an NA Turbo 1.6, with a fully braced chasis, stand alone ECU and the rebuilt JDM 1.6 box it was a little beast. On the winding A and B roads in rural Somerset my list of scalps included GT4 Celica, good few RX8’s, an S200 owner who then built a clone of mine, the only person I couldn’t keep up with on the twisties was a space framed mk2 Escort with a 1UZ Conversion. At 6’2” I just fit under the roll bar, plus loved the irony of being a big bloke driving a girls car......
Wow a Mk2 Escort with a 1UZ sounds like a pretty awesome car hah! I too am about 6,2. So I certainly know the feeling of being too big for a little girl car.
BEAVIS Motorsport funnily enough, there was another old boy who had a space framed MK1 Escort running a 1UZ on rear mounted turbos, I know this because he tried to buy an LS400 I was selling. I always remember him telling me he’d keep stock internals and they were good for around 400bhp. Far beyond my skills I am afraid! Love your time attack NB, looks and sounds lovely mate! Glad I found your channel. Peace
There was a 323 Turbo with the 1.6l B6 engine and front wheel drive 140 HP ( mandatory oil change every 7500 km `s ) and later a version with 150 HP and 4 WD but in the rally cars they used the later 1840 ccm BP - ZE engine from MX 5 NB / 323 GT . MX 5`s had still the inner piston spray oil cooling from the Turbo`s ...
Interesting fact: With Modern technology Almost all cars have a aftermarket Android navigation system available to install that looks original quality. Not the Mazda MX5, yes the Mazda 3 5 6 CX all have options. Not the mx5
91' MX-5 (A/C car) owner. Car is beautiful for it's age. Well cared for. Best thing I like about the car is: You can drive it hard and enjoy all of the motor w/o getting traffic tickets. And it handles so tight and precise. No you can't buy it. LOL
The NC MX5's chassis uses a modified Rx8 chassis. The Rx8 has one of the best, if not the best chassis in any sports car with how balanced, rigid and stiff it is imo. An oddity with power figures, the NB2 Mx5 had 152 hp in Australia and Japan, the UK and US got only 146 hp. However Mazda mistakenly put the wrong figures on early cars for the US and UK, stating it was 152 when it was actually 146, so they offered to buy back the cars to anyone upset about it, later updating everything to match the actual 146 hp rating iirc. Aussie Mx5s ran with OBD1 until 2006, instead of ODB2 also. One of the more ""rare"" Mx5s is the Titanium SE with this more powerful 152hp engine, only 150 ever were made for Australia. Which I am a proud owner of one. The NA and NB Mx5s are also front mid engine, since the engine is mounted behind the front axle, and not in front or on top of it. This is also something shared with the Rx7 and Rx8 and partly why all of those cars have excellent weight balance.
Having an issue with my 2002's O2 sensors heaters. First the rear one came up so I reset it with the Code reader. Then the rear came up. Wondering how those heaters are powered. Is there a fuse?
I am thinking of buying an old NB and build it up properly, because I want to get into car modifications. And everyone says its a good car, easy to maintain, and lots of tuning options (widebody for me). Still on the fence though
Hey Bull, in Australia we got 2 turbo models: the SE - almost identical to the Mazdaspeed Miata the SP - none of the turbo setup was the same as the mazdaspeed miata, it ran a garrett turbo.
you can thank Ford for those door handles in the aston. the astons from that era also had the ford universal keyfob. so an aston would have same keyfob as an f150
Anyone who calls the MX5 a girl's car or a hairdresser's car A) doesn't know shit about cars, and B) has never driven one, therefore their opinion is 100% invalid.
Hey Shane, that's only true in the case of the 1.6 diff with the 6" ring gear. The NA with the 1.8 engine has the same size diff as all the NB's. I've actually got more detail on diffs including a full video guide here: beavismotorsport.com/guides-tech/differential-guide-for-miata-mx5/
if you have a NA Torsen when you swap to the NB Torsen you can pop the dog ears off the NA diff and they'll slide into the NB diff. It's better if you run NB axles as there's maybe 3lbs of rotating mass in those dog ears.
@ 2:51 la-te-da. Rear wheel drive can kill. I hit a thin patch of rain runoff in my '06 and spun 360 degrees. Happened in a second. If you love this car and your life keep both hands on the wheel.
Lots of rear wheel drive vehicles in the world, I cannot personally say they just suddenly spin while driving down the road. Sounds like you were not driving to conditions.
Another tidbit... back in the day I remember hearing that the MX5 could have been an RX5, but Mazda didn't think there was a big enough market for rotary's.
JFYI: NB and NA steering rack is not interchangeable. Sure you can put it in there, but you will never reach proper alignment since the lenght of the rack differs
There were a number of factory turbo models over the years, in the case of point 3 I was just specifically referring to the highest powered car offered from factory, the SP turbo MX-5 in Australia with the GT2560 garrett turbo.
Yes, it certainly does! They made a limited number in the NB body style, and also some concepts in the NA style. They certainly are a unique and rare model.
i actually never recieved hate about my miata excpet from my dad "shouldnt have bought this rusty bin" and my hairdresser said its an awesome looking car
But are they real 200HP? I think Mazda rates my RX-8 at 238 HP, but I've never heard of people getting over 200 HP stock on a Dyno with them... Either the worlds most inefficient gearbox (also means it would probably melt at that point), or some marketing got involved shouting "Big numbers people, BIG NUMBERS!"
Another fun fact is that there is actually a coupe version of the nb miata. I believe it was for the Japanese market only though, so a true JDM car. I think they built somewhere between 500 and 1000 of them.
I think you are mistaking the Australian spec "SP" that I refer to in the video, with the Mazdaspeed. Yes there were over 5000 Mazdaspeeds (with around 178 bhp). There was only 100 "SP" turbo MX-5's (with around 200HP) in Australia.
BEAVIS Motorsport THE 60s TV show, filled with quirky eccentric masterminds, Carnaby street fashions and karate chopping action! If I remember correctly, Masda brought a couple of the Lotus Elans, and shipped them to Japan as a template in making their own version of the famous two seater.
The NC was using the same platform as the RX-8 at the time, I guess it made sense to Mazda. The ND was a whole new redesign and they knew what was best to get the car back to its roots.
I got my own NBFL a while ago and i must say it's a joy to ride.In the future i am thinking of getting the "Pissed off cat" being ND The biggest upside of this car is that...they are not really common in Europe as let's say a VW passat which means that the average screwhead didn't just use silver tape and wires to mend it. Considering the engine has just and only 110 HP and over the years has lost a few because EGR is a bitch...then the throttle and intake manifold needs a little love,a toilet brush and some WD40
well... as far as #8 goes... ive got a 99 miata, & im not a "hairdresser" ...but i am a "master barber" of 30 years experience... & its more fun to drive than my 98 formula or my 71 monte carlo!

Peace
Thanks for the kind words Dan! :-)
Ironic how it's called a *NA Turbo*
Interesting fact: With Modern technology Almost all cars have a aftermarket Android navigation system available to install that looks original quality. Not the Mazda MX5, yes the Mazda 3 5 6 CX all have options. Not the mx5
Most Interesting and out of the blue comment of the day. Thank you Garrett
Do you think a NA body kit would fit on an NB Miata?
Not really no, not without a lot of modification.
Hey Beavis, you’re gonna have to review the Abarth equivalent Fiata! It’s probably the best starter.
If you know how I can get my hands on one I'd love to see how it compares to my ND!
91' MX-5 (A/C car) owner. Car is beautiful for it's age. Well cared for. Best thing I like about the car is: You can drive it hard and enjoy all of the motor w/o getting traffic tickets. And it handles so tight and precise. No you can't buy it. LOL
Congrats on a great car.
Thank you for sharing, some nice little secrets that many would not know about, appreciate it XenoKyomi.
The Miata tail light has been on display at the Museum of Modern Art since the mid 1990’s. Fun fact.
Interesting fact, thanks for sharing.
Great job on this video man it was a fun watch!
Thank you GH! Always glad to hear from you :-)
BEAVIS Motorsport You too!
MX-5 + turbo = love
Great video by the way 😊
Thank you Mateusz!
Having an issue with my 2002's O2 sensors heaters. First the rear one came up so I reset it with the Code reader. Then the rear came up. Wondering how those heaters are powered. Is there a fuse?
Not sure Tom, replace the sensor?
I am thinking of buying an old NB and build it up properly, because I want to get into car modifications. And everyone says its a good car, easy to maintain, and lots of tuning options (widebody for me). Still on the fence though
I agree, its a good car, easy to maintain, and lots of tuning options. :P
oh it's light weight? ***mind blown***
#sarcasm
How much does aston martin charge for the door handle?
Probably 5 times what it would cost from Mazda hah!
#5 I've never seen an NA with triangle markers.
The NA/NB/NC models have the round markers. ND has the triangular shape.
On Na miatas 8 spoke daisy wheels are the rarest factory offered wheels. Automatic transmission ones weigh more compared to manual transmission ones.
Oh really, I have a spare set of daisy wheels, better be sure to hold onto them!
Was the turbo SP model in Australia different in any way to the Mazdaspeed version in America?
Hey Bull, in Australia we got 2 turbo models:
the SE - almost identical to the Mazdaspeed Miata
the SP - none of the turbo setup was the same as the mazdaspeed miata, it ran a garrett turbo.
www.mx5cartalk.com/SP_SE_Comparison/
Thanks mate appreciate this. I now own a piece of Aston Martin. 😁
Congrats Dilum! You got a part of an awesome bespoke UK car :-P
🤔 Astons are part Mazda, not the other way around.
you can thank Ford for those door handles in the aston. the astons from that era also had the ford universal keyfob. so an aston would have same keyfob as an f150
I'm just glad Aston Martin are still around producing amazingly interesting and beautiful cars.
At the USA market there wasn't the side indicator turn light on NC Miata.
Ah, nice I didn't realise that.
Have an 06 miata and love it!
Yay!
Anyone who calls the MX5 a girl's car or a hairdresser's car A) doesn't know shit about cars, and B) has never driven one, therefore their opinion is 100% invalid.
Haha, thanks for the support lvbuckeye
I thought I knew all there was to know about the Miata. Now I do.
Glad i could be of service!
@BEAVIS Motorsport, All Mx5s share the same alignment block on the door jams.
Very true!
Love the video! Keep up the good work!
Thank you Hardway!
The doorbushings are the same throughout all the generations!
I agree with you there :-) Thanks YataJoris.
#4 They changed the ND sun visors in 2018 on. No longer just thin plastic.
Oh wow really.... I rather liked the idea that they were thin plastic as an intentional weight save.
if you swap the rear diff from the NB to the NA you need to swap along the axles as well and drive shaft
Hey Shane, that's only true in the case of the 1.6 diff with the 6" ring gear. The NA with the 1.8 engine has the same size diff as all the NB's.
I've actually got more detail on diffs including a full video guide here:
beavismotorsport.com/guides-tech/differential-guide-for-miata-mx5/
if you have a NA Torsen when you swap to the NB Torsen you can pop the dog ears off the NA diff and they'll slide into the NB diff.
11 it costs 50k us$ in Denmark
Wow that's very expensive compared to a lot of other places. Is that due to Danish taxes?
Another tidbit... back in the day I remember hearing that the MX5 could have been an RX5, but Mazda didn't think there was a big enough market for rotary's.
I certainly believe that the rotary engine would've hurt sales and success of the MX-5.
Cool video, keep it up! I would love an SP, stock turbo would be welcome on any mx5 in my opinion
Sniped.
Hey AVP, thanks for watching! The SP is a great setup, much better than the SE/Mazdaspeed turbo.
U missed that if u spam the popups on the miata it winks
The universal and international term for a miata hello.
Great vid - 1 more, didn't a Jaguar XK use the same electric aeriel mast?
Really? Wow I wasn't aware of any Jaguar using MX-5 parts.
"...in tha wrrrrrld!"
All credit to Jeremy Clarkson
The NA series 1 MX5 the stock steering wheel has a cover that you can pull off to have a racing steering wheel
Ahh yes, the original MOMO!
One of the cutest too
You're 100% correct on that one Jose!
JFYI: NB and NA steering rack is not interchangeable. Sure you can put it in there, but you will never reach proper alignment since the lenght of the rack differs
Swap the entire sub-frame and you should be fine :)
BEAVIS Motorsport correct :) In my case a preowner put a powered NB rack in the NA and I was pretty confused not being able to get that toe right 😅
In point 3 you forgot to mention that Japan got a turbo model too from factory it wasn't just australia
There were a number of factory turbo models over the years, in the case of point 3 I was just specifically referring to the highest powered car offered from factory, the SP turbo MX-5 in Australia with the GT2560 garrett turbo.
4:17 the lights (high beam and low beam) on the front look like the lights on the late 90s-mid 00s Miata.
Thanks for watching Jared.
I really hope I have the chance to put a nice V8 in an MX5 one day. It's what every Miata needs/deserves.
A V8 MX-5.... It's be pretty awesome experience.
@@Bbeavis modern day AC Cobra
One thing you missed is that all gens from NA to ND all use the same door bushings :) #MiataGang
Totally true Kegan! Thanks for watching :)
The AC radiator from the NA does not fit in an NB. I found that out the hard way.
Sorry to hear Mark, did you get it fixed in the end?
@@Bbeavis a couple of weeks later a hit and run driver totalled it. So I bought myself another one, without ac.
I thought it was funny that an nc chassis was used to show how nas and nbs are the same under the skin
Nice spotting, you have a sharp eye David :-)
I don’t have the side on mine. It’s an NB BRG SE I have a special addition badge.
North American cars generally didn't have them, I assume you're in the USA?
Miata side mirrors were used on the Panoz Esperante.
Are you sure about that, do you know what years/models? Because as far as I know, they are not the same mirror.
I'm thinking the NC series would be best for me at 6'4" and 220#
It generally has the most space. At your height you'll struggle with rubbing on the roof.
Yup, the ever limited “Coupe” Miata. It does exist.
Yes, it certainly does! They made a limited number in the NB body style, and also some concepts in the NA style. They certainly are a unique and rare model.
I believe the NB coupe are Japan only but UK or Aussie gray market, maybe it could be obtained. Here is the States? Nope.
i actually never recieved hate about my miata excpet from my dad
"shouldnt have bought this rusty bin"
and my hairdresser said its an awesome looking car
Daddy never driven one then, one would assume.
@@Bbeavis well he has driven mine 2 times seems like he enjoyed it but doesnt want to show it.
Great video mate, keep it up. Well edited and great content.
God I'd love to drive that big Turbo Aussie version...
Cheers Jarrod!
Did you know that the amazing, crazy off-road, kickass, lsx powered rally fighter uses na miata door handles?
Wow, thanks Brad, I didn't know this!
Good video Beaver ! Only 100 made of the SP damn, factory 200hp seems like a hoot.
Thanks for watching NippyMoto!
And just 1 in crystal blue (the unicorn) !
That makes resale for SPs here Very Good Value indeed. It’s a future insanely priced collectable.
Seen around 150HP at the wheels on a dyno dynamics in shoot out mode
Another fun fact is that there is actually a coupe version of the nb miata. I believe it was for the Japanese market only though, so a true JDM car. I think they built somewhere between 500 and 1000 of them.
Indeed Jelle, this has been a popular comment, seems like the world wanted more of these ultra rare coupes!
the mazda speed miata made more than you think about 1500 made it to the us and allot of them to europe
I think you are mistaking the Australian spec "SP" that I refer to in the video, with the Mazdaspeed. Yes there were over 5000 Mazdaspeeds (with around 178 bhp). There was only 100 "SP" turbo MX-5's (with around 200HP) in Australia.
You left out the fact that some people think theyre cars are better all the way up until your spooling 20psi at 400+ hp on e85.
Haha perhaps that is true :)
mazda miata door bushings are the same on all the model years
Hey Dennis, that's actually true... I think it's the only thing that appears to be the same for all 4 models.
You are so smart beavis!
Hahahah yesss, somebody was observant! You win a cookie.
How about a mention of the Miata's inspiration? The Lotus Elan. Better known as Mrs Peel's car from the sixties Spy-Fi show "The Avengers"
Good point, I didn't know about the Avengers - good old bit of British history I'm sure!
If you have a Miata this video told you nothing
Not everyone is as smart as you Chase.
im looking into getting one of these babies as my first car!
Awesome, good luck with your search :-)
Its weird how the NA and NB have 4 nuts on wheels. But the NC have 5 and then in the ND they go back to 4 *o*
The NC was using the same platform as the RX-8 at the time, I guess it made sense to Mazda. The ND was a whole new redesign and they knew what was best to get the car back to its roots.
I got my own NBFL a while ago and i must say it's a joy to ride.In the future i am thinking of getting the "Pissed off cat" being ND
The biggest upside of this car is that...they are not really common in Europe as let's say a VW passat which means that the average screwhead didn't just use silver tape and wires to mend it.
Considering the engine has just and only 110 HP and over the years has lost a few because EGR is a bitch...then the throttle and intake manifold needs a little love,a toilet brush and some WD40
Glad to hear you are enjoying the car, and keeping it well kept :-)
@Bbeavis it's the least a good car owner can do, and even more if it's a passion
My NB doesn't have that side indicator
I presume you're located in North America? For some reason that market didn't have the side indicators.
Yep! We got friggin ripped off on that indicator!
weight reduction bro
well... as far as #8 goes... ive got a 99 miata, & im not a "hairdresser" ...but i am a "master barber" of 30 years experience... & its more fun to drive than my 98 formula or my 71 monte carlo!
Master Barber! That's some skill, well done!
@@Bbeavis well thank u sir ...& i just wanted to say, im really enjoying all ur videos, uve got some great content... thanx!
Great Cinematography, great editing and cut away shots. Great product knowledge. Great script writing.. funny you used Trump lol and are you a Star Wars fan? I am but Haven't seen The Rise of Skywalker yet. I'm not excited to see it, I don't know why.
All the best Shaun of NYC
Thanks Shaun! We have seen Rise of Skywalker at the cinemas twice already, I enjoyed it :-P
The jota edition Miata isn't actually the rarest Miata however, that title goes to the missoni miata with only 1 ever produced
Do you have any more detail on said missoni miata ?
The only designs to use side markers were the euro and japanese eunos roadsters. Labeled Mazda MX-5's didnt have side indicators.
All the MX-5's in Australia have side markers. I presumed it was mostly just the American cars that didn't get them.
Here in South Africa as well. My NC has exactly those.
I always saw the z3 as the hairdressers soft top of choice. Mx 5 doesn’t have enough bling
Exactly, not glitzy enough!
Hammerdak mustang died the day you could buy it as a 4 cylinder. I don’t care how turboed it is, that’s just not right.
