For those people who have not owned a Miata and questioned the practicality of owning this sports car, I’ll share my 30 years experience.
I purchased my first Miata in 1990. It was my daily driver until 2006 with 155,000 miles. I learned to track on it, too. Other than replacing the top, a wheel (from spinning off track), and routine maintenance, not one single repair in 16 years. I gave it to a 17 year old enthusiast, but still miss it.
I have also owned 2002 NB, 2006 NC1, and 2010 NC2. I’ve rented ND1s, and am purchasing 2020 ND2 in May. I’ve daily driven and tracked over 350,000 miles in Miatas. I’ve owned a number of other sports cars, too, (Porsches, Zs, Alphas, Austins included) but I strongly prefer Miatas as my daily drivers. All are fun, all have been very reliable, and tough little tanks.
My wife and I share a soft spot for the 1990 NA. She told me not to get rid of it; I wished I’d listened. NB2 is a better sports car - the NA perfected. But I’ve considered buying another NA just to restore. I’ve never thought about buying another NB. Something special about NAs that I can’t explain. Closest to driving a go cart on the road, maybe. And every time we see an NA, my wife says, “I told you not to get rid of that one.”
NC2 is IMO one of the most underrated sports cars in the world. (Even Jeremy Clarkson surprisingly gushed over this one). When enthusiasts dismiss NC2s off handedly, I assume they probably have not had much experience with many cars. A sports car bargain right now. Have 110,000 miles on mine, still looks new, replaced ignition wires only repair. Seemingly unbreakable for me.
Drove my NC2 back to back with ND1, and upgrading was not an obvious choice until ND2. NC2 significantly improved for track over NC1. The NCs are a great choice for larger folks; they have significantly more room than all other Miatas. I’m 6’1” 190 lbs and NDs feel snug (in a good way) by comparison. NC is so roomy that bracing my legs during spirited or competitive driving actually takes some practice. The NDs are perfectly fitted to hold me in place without any special effort. But if you’re over 6’1”, I recommend driving an ND a bit before assuming it’s the one. The ND2’s HP increase and telescoping steering wheel convinced me to go for ND. NC2 will become dedicated track car.
Having owned and really driven many cars over the years, there is no other car I’d rather have as my daily driver (Boxster included, but that’s for another time.).
And something for novices to remember, it’s simply not as fun to push powerful and expensive cars to their limits. When you know that a little spin out might cost you 10,000 bucks or more, most of us hesitate to take our $100,000+ sports cars to their limits. And it’s not actually more fun when we do. I can literally replace my Miata for the cost of a fairly simple repair on one of my other cars. Why our expensive sports cars sit in the garage, we rent super cars to experience the track, but we daily drive Miatas.
As for image issues, I have no idea what people go on about. My (very) gay friend who cuts my hair hates Miatas and drives a V8 Camero SS. My wife thinks they’re too small and windy and drives a 2019 Stinger GT2.
Hope this helps those not sure about jumping into Miata world.

    • @kgm5330
      @kgm5330 2 роки тому +2

@@rawhidelamp What LoCig VI said. I think you could fit absolutely fine, but at 6'2", it starts to depend on your proportions and how you like to sit.
I initially thought the ND2 RF GT was a little too snug for my liking. (That thought never crossed my mind with the NA - NC models.) I figured I would not be able to wear a helmet comfortably. But after a few thousand miles, I completely lost that perception that it was too snug. It feels like it was made to fit me even with a helmet and without any adjustments to the seat. I never perceived the NA to be cramped. So, I'm guessing if the NA feels a little snug initially for you, you could probably figure a seating position that works with minimal adjustments, and after a driving it a little, it will become completely comfortable. I know a guy who is 6'3" and he says all the Miata models feel fine to him except the ND2 RF.

My favorite is the NB personally. I used to own a '90 NA, got it as my first car. Now I have a '99 NB and it just feels like a more grown up more put together version of the NA. It's very similar to the NA from the engine to the interior but it has the LSD, ABS, power steering an cruise control which are nice creature comforts to have when it's your daily. Got mine right before Christmas for $3200 with 84k miles, zero rust, zero accidents. Easy to work on, fun to drive and cheap to run.

I've driven all of them except for the NC, I currently own a NB myself and I have to say the best ones for purists are the NA and ND.
NA because it's the purest, OG and a real future classic. But a lot less comfortable on highways and such.
ND because it's the most refined, quickest and newest of the bunch. But space is really limited.
I've owned two NB's, one pre facelift and one facelift version and they are pretty close to the NA but a bit more comfortable as a daily driver.
They have the most space (passenger and luggage) of the bunch and relative to the NA's they are younger and with that a little less cost sensitive cars.
But if you want car review purity the NA Just tops it in smiles per gallon, and the ND feels like driving something from the future for me.

I've had two NBs and currently have an NC. I like the NC more than the NBs. They are as fast and don't weigh much more (without PRHT) than the Mazda Speed Miatas and are safer, more comfortable, more rigid and you don't have to replace timing belts. They also handle as well as the NBs, I am just as confident getting the rear end loose as I was with the NBs. Also, the NCs higher power makes getting the rear end loose easier.

Proud former owner of an NA here! Love love this video! Thank you for posting this!
In my personal honest opinion, I think the ND is the best generation. It has similar size dimensions and weight to the NA and NB respectively with the modern amenities. It's very well built, no squeaks and rattles, highest naturally-aspirated power, and has the single-latch lockable softtop (beats the hell out of unlatching two clips on both front roof corners and risking the top bounce up and down if you go over nasty bumps). Big thanks to SKYACTIV technology! Saving my pennies to get an ND one day.

yup, i got an nb2 sportive (1.8 vvt with the big brakes and chasis reinforcements) for almost 3 years now. Put eibach and bilsteins for lower and stiffer ride (next will be stiffer sway bars, cause still rolls a lot more than desired)
I´m in love with it despite the lack of power on straights and the excesive oil consumption of my engine.
Cheap to run and the best Smiles/Money/Miles ratio ever
(not sure if going to overhaul or keep running until it explodes and then get a second hand engine.... swaps are out of the question cause here on Spain is really expensive and difficult to homologate them)

A nicely equipped NC, is a better daily than an ND. It is more practical with more interior space, I’m 6 1 plus way bigger trunk opening (trust me makes a difference) and better cup holders...way better lol...not to mention you will be able to drag early NDs from lights and beat them. 😁 Nd is still the business tho.. better overall car and waaayyy better looking 😅

Wrecked that one in wet road conditions, Ins = New 99 = 4. Searched, found and bought in 2004 another 99 - still have it(seen better days...parting it out now loved it!). Just picked up a 96 with only 43k on it for $2500!!! Has hail damage but new clutch, new top and in great con!!!! Gonna do small mods....re-lovin the pop-up headlights!!!

It had 150k kms on it, no comestic rust, fairly well taken care of yet somehow this Miata was originally sold in my city and stayed here. My city is notoriously cold and uses salt on the roads every year . I searched everyday for a year to get the car and I'm so glad I did. I learned standard on it and have had fun ever since. what an EXCELLENT VIDEO!

  • @christopherlowery855
    @christopherlowery855 Рік тому

Not sure how I missed this video.
I have an NA and an NB. The NA is a 90 with the stock 1.6l. It needs a new oil pump, piston rings, the bore should probably be honed as well. It sat for a few years with a leaking head gasket and the engine was practically seized. I have a 1.8l I plan to rebuild and drop in the car. The car has a two-tone black/blue fade with a body kit, tiged in hood nostrels and riveted on hood vents. It looks much meaner than it actually is.
My second miata is a 99 NB. It's white with a black hardtop that deperately needs a paintjob. The NB is boosted to about 14psi and puts out 260whp/305 crank. It has 225/15s in the rear at about .5deg negative camber. It has a 6spd from a 2002 SE installed, combined with the rear end from the same car. I just replaced the clutch with an ACT stage3, paired with a lightweight flywheel.
To answer the question of which miata is the best. For an enthusiast, any of them but the NC. The NA-NB share almost all parts. I would certainly buy one of those if it's not your only vehicle. They are pretty cheap to upgrade. The NA/NB are fairly easy to work on, short of fixing oil pan leaks (you have to drop the subframe, or pull the engine). Like a 90s civic, once you've done the work once, it's easy to apply the same knowledge to a car that was made a whole decade later. Also, swapping a 1.8 into an early 90s NA is pretty simple. Building these engines isn't too hard either. You can pick up a built NB engine for about $2k. Also, the NA/NB are non-interference engines, meaning the timing belt can snap while you're on the road (happened to me) and you're a timing belt away from being back on the road again. The engine also has a cast iron block, which is far more durable than the sleeved aluminum varieties (like the D16 civic engine).
If you want something to drive out of the box, without issues, certainly get an ND. Those cars are just sexy to look at. The hardtop doesn't do it for me because the motors are just something else to break. However, being able to go topless on the go, while enjoying the pleasures of a hardtop is a very nice creature comfort. It also has plenty of tuning potential.
The NC is considered to be the black sheep of the family. The looks are agonizing (at least for me). The front end just doesn't look right. The tail lights are too euro, the engine has a polymer valve cover and intake manifold (most cars do these days). And the chassis is just too heavy to get the PWR (power to weight ratio) you would with other years. I look at it as the miata for your grandparents, or your mom. It is the least enthusist-friendly variety of miata out there.
From my perspective, the NB certainly takes the cake, ideally a 2002 SE, or the drivetrain from one. While I love the popup headlights, they are something else to break. (The relay on my NA went out and they would not stop going up and down) I slapped some Spec-D headlights on my NB and that car looks 20yrs newer.
While the ND has more stock HP and you can tune it without an aftermarket ECU, there's still a lot of tech that the older models didn't have, not to mention a lot of plastic that needs to be replaced at some point. The older cars are less of a computer, and more of a fun-machine. New for new, the NB is just the Miata pinnacle. The mazdaspeed was made during the NB era. My NB puts out more power than a stock mazdaspeed, and it's under-tuned. It was built for 30PSI. Most of the work I've done have been upgrades, replacing shoddy parts put on by previous owners, or just plain 20yr old car maintanance (brakes, tierod ends, oil pan gasket, tires, diff fluid, trans fluid, oil change, etc). That 1.8 cast iron block is just a solid powerplant.
I'm not a new car fan by any strech of the imagination. However, if I did buy a new car, it would have to be an ND.
    Great video, certainly ideal.

    1991 NA6
    2006 NC
    and 2004 Mazdaspeed miata
all with atleast suspension mods and LW rims and UHP tires.
My favorite is honestly the NC miata bc they are way cheaper now, and its very very easy to swap a 2.5 fomoco motor, bolts pretty much right in and 220 hp with better torque curve. Add stiffer suspension with sway bars mounts and 200tw tires they are a ton of fun for autox or track. They also make for much more comfortable daily drivers. Pro tip, if the NC miata comes with the yellow sport struts then it has a factory LSD, i dont think all the grand touring had the LSD but if the car has yellow factory struts it has LSD.
But, stock for stock the mazdaspeed is a ton of fun and the boost is really addictive. Daily drivability is 'eh bc the 6 speeds gear ratios are pretty short and the MSM has several little quirks to iron out before they are really solid fun.
