I know what you're thinking, "But BEAVIS, you forgot about brakes".... Well here's another tip, your stock brakes are almost certainly good enough, just run some proper pads, I suggest Hawk Blue for the track or Hawk HP+ for an aggressively driven street car.
Thanks man, I really was questioning why you forgot about the brakes
I got u covered.
BEAVIS Motorsport no... I'm thinking that these were all mods that don't make your car faster except for the lsd😂 but all in all great vid man.. Might turn your mic audio up some tho
Boston, are you saying sticky tyres and light wheels dont make your car faster? I've owned many miatas, and unless you have big money, these are definitely the best ways to help you drive quicker round the track.
BEAVIS Motorsport in a way yes they do. I won't say you're wrong.. But don't you think they all follow more of a "how to track prep your miata"?

Make your miata faster with coilovers, tires, rims, and seats!!
Boston Tillery and a bumper mounted wang!!!
Yes dont forget to put some jdm stuckers comeee one guys this is BS ...
If we’re talking laptimes or autocross shorter diff ratio, coilovers and a good wheel and tire combo will greatly improve your performance. The bucket seat is just there to so you don’t slide around in the stock seats. If we’re talking drag racing or street light racing, anything aside from the shorter ratio and tires won’t make a difference and even those aren’t significant, that’s why he mentioned FI.

Steve, you are correct. Thanks for watching!
Quicker not faster kid
@@SIRICKO kinda the same thing
@@SIRICKO fast is acceleration not top speed
Six-speed transmission can only do so much. The 6-speed transmission in the NB Miata is actually the same as the first transmission yet they crammed another gear in it. They didn't redesign it. From a reliability standpoint and cost to replace gearboxes, 6 Speed being at $300, 5 speed being at 50 bucks, it doesn't make a difference. Of course if you trying to increase horsepower or speed by any means yeah go for it
I like how straight forward this dude is
Thank you Caza
@@Bbeavis No problem man, keep it up!!
Diff 5 / coil overs / fat rims 8 ,9 rims/ bucket seat , bride bonus / supercharger turbo 👍🏻
:D Thats the one!
Honestly unless you have gone for FI you really don't need more than 7" wheels with 195-215 tyre widths. 195s for fun progressive breakaway, and for cheap practice tyres, 205/215 for setting lap times.
Also a roll cage I would say is essential to any tracked convertible, half cages are cheap, light and adequate for most non competitive usage.
Mx5s also benefit greatly from a tailored geometry setup, especially with coils.
Best bucket seats I've sat in are transplants from an S2 Elise, can be picked up for £400 for both, comfy, well bolstered and importantly very light seat, a good 10kg weight saving per chair, particularly if you have leather tombstones which weigh a ton.
205/50/15 with a slight rolled fender is the way to go.
To the contrary, I found laptimes improved by going to 8 inch on my otherwise very standard NB.
Racing stripes make it faster. ;)
Oh damn i'm putting stripes on all my cars now!!!
Yer I can vouch at least a 7 to 9 hp increase. It's crazy how much the little details make.
Nice video! I'm going to buy a Miata and im looking all videos about the Miata😍
Thanks Aaron, hope you find plenty of useful miata videos here!

Noticed the MCA coilovers 😍. Do you find the x-r (street performance) is too harsh on the road and on long drives? Still tossing up between those or the x-c (street essentials). thanks
It would depend on your spring rates and the like, but in cars that I've driven with these coilovers, I've found them quite compliant considering they are considered a track focused product.
If you keep it NA, do the air intake last or not at all. My Protege 1.5 needs a racing clutch as the stock one only holds half throttle. Exhaust, cams, pulleys, weight reduction, port/polish should be done first. A drop in K&N air filter for the stock airbox is the only option I recommend. No crappy aftermarket cone/tubes as they improve low rpm but kill the VRIS system. Also most NA mazdas VRIS systems are ruined when adding A turbo or supercharger. VRIS is similar in effect to VTEC at 4k rpm you should get a kick when modified correctly.
Thanks for the input 787b, i've certainly found an intake pipe tot he throttle body needs to be about 3 foot long to help maintain good torque curve.
1st- coilovers 2nd -200 tread wear tires 3rd - big front sway bar 4th - strip non essentials 5th - motor mounts and diff bushings
See now I tend to agree :-)
Can you explain on this my dad just bought a used 2007 mx5 miata trying to get a little quicker
just out of interest is there a cheaper option for wheels what are the whbeels that are on the whiter one ? cheers for the advice !!!
In terms of cheaper options, you're probably best to keep an eye on your favorite facebook group or auction site for some second had light weight wheels.
There was a White NB with 15x8 949 6UL's, and at the end of the video, with Varstoen V1 in 15x9.

Do I need an upgraded cooling system for track days with an 07 NC?
With stock-ish power levels, the OEM cooling system will very likely be perfectly capable of maintaining safe temps. Higher power cars will probably want some extra cooling help.
Thanks for the tips. In your experience/knowledge, does adding a turbo kit reduce engine life by any means?
There's definitely an impact on life and longevity by adding more power with a turbo. You can't get more power for 'free'!
Thanks for watching Roberto!
Cheap, reliable, fast; Pick just two
It probably has a lot to do with how you drive it. Every day I drive my stock 1.6 I have someone wanting to line up at the light and it is usually stock cars and trucks. So, if I beat the heck out of it in stock form, it’ll crap out too. Now, I plan to do some tasteful mods with good quality parts, just to get a little more power...more of a sleeper. Then driving it without matting the pedal. The tune and airflow should allow the performance and efficiency to increase without compromising the dependability...if I am mindful in my driving and maintenance. If you do track days...🤪🙃🤣

How different is it driving a 3.6-3.9 Final Drive Ratio and a 4.1-higher Final Drive Ratio? Does the latter have improve acceleration than the former?
There's definitely a noticeable difference in the feel the car offers through the entire gear range. The 'feeling' of snapping through gears with a higher ratio final drive like a 4.1 or 4.4 makes the car 'feel' faster, but it also is actually quicker to accelerate. Definitely a nice upgrade, particularly for people who've come from the tall 3.6 rear drive.
If you equip these mods will the car still be a daily driver?
Buddy except for a few things yes. If you get rain fairly often then you don't want a tire like what he said in the video unless you just change the wheels when you take it to the track. Also if you get snow put snow tires on the stock wheels and change them out for the winter. Depending on how far you drive you may not want to put a bucket seat in but you can do what's called a foamectomy I'll edit this comment and put a link to a few good videos on it. Also don't add forced induction to your daily, it might be fun but more than likely it won't be as reliable. Although Greg from thecarpassionchannel had proved my wrong he had his car boosted while dailying his car for a long time.

I'm running a 4.77 diff ratio hahaha. First gear is heaps short, it's heaps fun, but it's only bad for highway travel.
Good fun though!
I have no idea about cars yet, I’m about to purchase my first car (an NB Miata), do performance mods like this affect it’s reliability?
Don’t worry guys, I’m gonna prioritize learning about the car itself before actually modifying it
In general, all of the suggestions are almost certainly not going to negatively impact reliability.
You forgot to take the rear seats out ;) haha I've got a mk2 and love it but feel it needs a little more oomph to make me happy again
The one thing every MX5 needs is about 50 more horsepower!
Where can you find good differentials to swap in?
Depends on where you live, but online forums are a good start, miata.net, miataturbo.net, mx5cartalk.com. Or, scour online stores such as ebay.
what tires need i for ony street driving ?
There are so many options out there, I cannot suggest any one for you, best ask your local tyre supplier.
Just a small tip: I would address the brakes before going forced induction ;)
OEM brakes are great on the MX-5, until you add more power.
Do you know the best place to BUY a 3.6 gear ratio? I am from the US and I am actually looking for one. I would happily trade my 4.3 for a torsen 3.6 setup if anyone down under wants to do a swap! my miata isn't built for low speed track turns, it's built for straight line speed (think AC cobra) in a small nimble body! None of our miatas in the US ever came with a 3.x ring gear, they're all 4.1 and 4.3!! great for you gymkhana guys, but absolute crap for canyons and high speed cruising with 300+ horsepower miatas!
Probably best to sit on forums like miata turbo or sell pages on facebook and wait for someone in the USA to sell a gearset.
u said 8 inch wheels... but i was told i couldnt run anything bigger than 7 inches wide? ...just fyi, its a 99 nb with what i assume is a stock suspension, although it sits a good bit lower than other nb's ive compared it to... im lookin at a set of enkei92's & would love ur advice on weatheror not i could fit a 15x8" wheel? & if so, what backspacing & offset should i condider? love ur videos man, thanx!
I run 9" on my NB, so whoever told you you cannot run anything wider than 7" is miss-informed. A rim 15x8 +36 is the good balance for fit/performance.
@@Bbeavis thank u sir! & may i ask, if i were to go with a 7.5" wide wheel, what would the "equilivant" offset be to get the same dimensions as a 8" w/ 36mm in a 7.5" wheel? & thank u for ur help & ur response... especially since im a newbie in the miata world, its tuly appreciated sir!
@@heavychevy383 It's negligible, but 0.5inch = 12mm. Divided by 2=6mm. So approx +30 would have the outside face of the rim at the same point as an 8" +36 offset.

Can someone tell me where the engine number of the 1990 Mazda Miata is?
It is on the side of the engine block, toward the back underneath cyl4 of the exhaust manifold.
just discovered mine came with a 4.1 LSD as standard so just some pads, suspension and an exhaust system and it should be perfect
Thanks for watching Bart, hope the car treats you well :)
you lucky bastard XD
how do bucket seats make your car go faster ?
You have better control of the car and are held in place so that your leg/arm/torso muscles aren't working to just keep you steady, they can instead focus on feeling the car and controlling it.
How will these modifications effect on the mileage of the car?
For the most part, they wont have any significant effect.
They might even make it better with lower weight and better suspension
where can i buy a bigger diff?
Ebay,facebook groups,forums,craigslist.
What kind of supercharger was that a picture of? I'm looking for a self contained supercharger but an FFS charger is almost 5 grand! Is this something I won't find much cheaper?
I really don't think you can do any form of proper forced induction without spending around $4-5k. if you do everything yourself, and buy a used kit, you could run a dodgy low end turbo setup for about $2k. But that's a struggle.

standard 3.6:1 or 3.9:1 diff???? they are some of the more rare diffs not the standard ones.....they offer a better ratio for motorways and cruising
3.6:1 and 3.9:1 are pretty common here in Australia. Good for a higher powered car but for the average driver a quicker ratio like a 4.3 is always going to give the car some pep!
I didn't know that...i'll be sure to check australia out when i start looking to upgrade my diff haha! my 4.3:1 is a terrible diff....it's punchy in the low RPM's and provides excellent acceleration but it's ridiculous cruising at around 4,000 to 4,500 on the motorway.
Yeah, Turbo and Superchargers marry you to an expensive tuning process if you want to stay on top of it. Tuning and retuning with a software/dyno process is expensive asf. Go for it if you got the money, but turboing is something people fail to understand for street racers and every day drivers. Doesn't seem worth it at all. Exhaust is another good idea though.
What something is worth to people on their cars is all so very relative, I can never tell someone whether a modification is 'worth it' for them - so while I agree forced induction can be costly, and complex - its value to a person depends on what they want to do and what their budget may be.
Cant argue with you, exhaust is almost always a nice choice for some noise, personality and a little extra power.
no mention of practice?
Certainly a good idea! Whether it be at a track, or even playing Gran Turismo on the playstation, it all helps to improve laptimes :)
Tires will compensate for the factory brakes, no need to upgrade. Better tires will always do more for you than better brakes in the same price range.
Better tyres will definitely drop laptimes. Keep in mind better tyres will work the brakes harder. Good pads and fluid will help to handle the increased grip.
Didn't think about that, good point.
best way put a v6 from a jaguar in it
I've seen the V6 from a honda oddyssey in an MX5, but never a Jag V6. :)
I'm sure this was a direct reference to one of Car Throttle's recent videos. Rather than the usual LS swap, one company is making conversion kits for a V6 Jag engine. Seems pretty boss to get the both worlds of added power, and not too killer fuel efficiency.
I did see the Car Throttle video, it was pretty cool.
I'd love to have an engine that always breaks!
@@Shrocket is that the jaguar engine? lol I hear different reviews about this engine....

Extra Bass Yes mate, 100% p-plate legal :-)
which miata should I get na or nb
It's basically the same car. Choose the one you like the best.
If you are only after outright speed on a budget, probably best to get a later NB with the 6spd gearbox. They are the best starting base.
BEAVIS Motorsport ive heard that the 6 speed has worse shifting feel than the 5 speed ones.. is that true?
The 6 speed's top gear has a higher gear ratio than the 5 speed's top gear, meaning your top speed is actually lower with a 6 speed. It's marginal though something like .67 in the top gear of the 6 speed to .62 in the top gear of the 5 speed (not exactly but close to that).
Its actually .83 in the 6 speed overdrive versus .81 in the 5 speed overdrive... so a pretty small difference, both are going to drone in the low 4 thousands when cruising at 80. This calculator is pretty nice> www.flyinmiata.com/tech/gearing.php
The first thing i would do. Make it even lighter.
A great solution!
You don't need a limited slip to make it faster. That is very expensive swap on Miata that doesn't have a LSD. full replacement suspension, light wheels and some other weight loss modes will do wonders. The LSD will not do much beyond that.
When you push through a corner and your inside rear wheel is spinning away all your power, an LSD will do wonders.
@@Bbeavis That was the first item on the list - and that is what surprised me. The first thing you do to Miata to make it faster is suspension, and/or sways. Wheels/Tires. Next in order is FI - and perhaps lastly a LS Dif.
@@Bbeavis I've driven a Miata for 20 years and lived where I drove a canyon road to work every day with a simple Koni yellow suspension and it was a dream - never had any issues with left wheel spinning. It you control your speed properly through a corner you can prevent that.
@@ZacharySound In my experience I've found that even a completely standard NA MX-5 suffers without an LSD at the track, and have lap times to improve it. Perhaps your canyon roads don't amplify that need in the same way a race track does. You suggest an LSD is a "very expensive swap" but then you immediately suggest "full replacement suspension" is the first thing you would do on a car.... replacement suspension can often far exceed the cost of an LSD center.
@@ZacharySound no diff no drive - more power still no drive. Simple
That's a bucket bench not a bucket seat lol
:-)
13B swap. Later down the project you can add forced induction(or another rotor) for as many HP as you wish.
There's not as many rotary powered MX-5's out there as you'd think huh... seems a bit of a shame
It really is a shame, as it seems like this car is made for a rotary engine
Fd factory housings but add an extra spark plug per rotor like in the 787b with rx8 high compression rotors for more bang. Semi peripheral port and half bridgeport run a tune and factory twin turbo or a single variable scroll turbocharger. Add nitrous as needed when you're racing and don't forget to use ceramic seals AFTER the tune is complete so you don't damage the housings from knocking/misfiring...
toyo r888 not suggested? hm...
Sure, they are a good tyre, but this is not a list of all the tyre options on the earth. Sorry.
@@Bbeavis fair point, considering mx5 is budget, you would go with budget tire, and in budget range, r888 is in the top5 price/quality
@@RussianSpaceman The Nitto NT01 that I suggested in the video are the same compound as the R888 and made by the same manufacturer, no point in me listing the 'same' tyre twice.

Nice Jonathan, at least it makes for a more fun drive like this!
RIP boss motorsports

so a bucket seat makes it faster? uhhh
Yes absolutely. You'll be able to control the car better, have better feel for the thing, and be able to use your muscles to steer the car rather than try hold yourself in the cockpit. All of which will result in faster lap times.
Find lighter seats.
This video should be renamed "How to make your Mazda MX-5 Miata handle better"
Diff gears make your car handle better?
Faster doesn't always mean in a straight line, and this channel is clearly about going faster around a track that features corners. However, differential gear ratios and limited slip centres will help with acceleration and traction from a standing start, along with some good tyres. You also appear to have missed the bonus tip of going for forced induction.
Cold air intake????
Exhaust???
Neither have much of an influence or impact on actual performance. Mostly just for noise. A set of tyres will do much greater wonders for laptimes than a noisy muffler.
@@Bbeavis what about cold air intake? I'm not sure how much practical horsepower that is. In Theory it sounds like a good idea
@@reptilesgamers00 Realistically it might add around a 5% power increase. Not a huge change... but a little something at least.

Sure, they can be bought for $1500 to $2000 AUD. That's not too far ion price from some of the chinese coilovers.
BEAVIS Motorsport When something costs as much as the car you install it on,it's hard to think of it as "cheap",but I guess you're right.
MX-5s must be much cheaper where you live? Also it's pretty hard to find coilovers here in Australia for under about $1000. So an extra $500 for a proper brand like MCA seems worthwhile.
+BEAVIS Motorsport well, there's to say I live next to Germany, where they're super cheap and super common, almost everyday there's another one for sale. I am considering to buy one in my country that's 2500€. There is to say,Australian dollars might be worth less then euros

Is this a troll cause this video barely had anything to do with making the car "go faster" no standalone ecu was mentioned headers cams intake if your gonna make a video please do it right and not half assed as to not waste alot of our times. You should of titled the video things to do before making your miata faster🧐
